A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Great Escape

Posted in Uncategorized by pawliekokonuts on July 9, 2013

I’ve decided that as a New York/San Francisco Giants fan my primary duty — and pleasure — is to bask in the Golden Gate glow of the Giants as 2012 World Series Champions. That’s all. There are — I don’t know — 90-plus days left of basking guaranteed. I hereby resolve to enjoy those days. My charge, my self-imposed mandate, is to treasure each of those days as reigning champions, to act like “Roman kings,” as Bob Dylan puts it.

Teams rarely repeat, in any sport, especially baseball. My job now is to enjoy the ride and not worry about anything else. Not wins, not losses, not injuries, not trades, not other teams, not good weather or storms.

Yup. A grand escape. I don’t want so-called reality to rob me of this delicious, daily pleasure.
That’s my strategy. What’s yours?

Escape? Outside of watching the Giants bring home some new hardware in October/November, I guess I’ll go with Cintia Dicker to get through the dog days.

I like the way you think, John. What’s not to like about a woman as banging hot as her, and who has the name “Dicker.”

  2. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 9, 2013 at 8:53 pm

No NL team has ever won 3 of 4 world series. We have been gifted a bounty that we’ll always cherish. It’s just too hard to get worked up about this team sucking when we have so much fuel from 2010/2012 to fire the supernova past our basking asses over and over every day since the day this all started. 🙂

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 9, 2013 at 8:54 pm

And I would fucking ruin Cintia Dicker if ever given the consensual chance. I’d start with a Rockstar kareoke…no wait, I’d END with it! I need to consult San Dawg on the best most promising ways to lure Cintia Dicker into my favor. 🙂

You can’t go wrong with the Rockstar karaoke at any point in the courtship!

Flav, I think Cintia would be a fine choice of a woman for a young fellow like you, just don’t let our pal Eddecker come around, or you won’t have a chance (actually, no one has a chance when Edd is in the house).

Musings. I haven’t heard/seen any of this game tonite so far:
    1. So, musical LU hole #3 continues — Scutaro is it tonight. Maybe Belt will end up 9th soon.
    2. This steroid/HGH thing out of Florida looks pretty big. Maybe 1/3 of each All Star team will be suspended.
    3. If Bartolo Colon gets suspended again, I wonder if Susan Slusser will mention it in her fawning reports of his amazing feats at the age of 40.
    4. Cintia Dicker? Not my type. But, her cousin from Rio, Pleaza Dickme, now she I’d like to see…

  5. SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on July 9, 2013 at 9:14 pm

I was wondering why there were no posts alluding to whether or not Flannery should have sent Scutaro in the first and whether or not Recker made a bit of dirty play lowering the shoulder on Scuts as he came in, but then I clicked on the Cintia Dicker link and understood why those topics were not addressed.
FYI l liked sending him and didn’t think it was a dirty play by by Recker and Cintia Dicker is hot as hell.

WillieD-I saw your post about possibly being down this way in the future. Keep me posted. It would be great to go to a game or do something. Maybe we can even make it on a hoop court and I can see if I still have my Alex English scoring moves.

Loved to hear Callaghan at the Arena after a basket, “#2 is Alex English.” Even his pre game intros of the starters were cool–now it’s all screaming at warp level.

Tanaka is legit. He normally plays 2nd, but Torres has been so putrid, that they put him in left. Torres is going to see less and less playing time (after Francouer is promoted).

I agree with Bochy’s decision to bring Posey into the game, but why shitcan Belt to the bench???? Quiroz hasn’t done jack in this game, except for the sacrifice; and Belt was 1 for 2, with 2 runs scored and 2 BBs. Sheesh, it wouldn’t have hurt Posey to catch a couple of innings.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 9, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Quiroz did a great job catching all night long, especially with Mijares. And you probably didn’t see the pre-game show, with video of Posey walking to work. He looked like an 80 year old arthritic.

Our beloved team sucks balls this season. By objective measure, we are the worst team in the majors for lo, the last 50 games. From first to worst, how is that possible?
Injuries, shminjuries. That can’t explain it all.
I’m suspicious this clubhouse is not healthy. Something dark and dank is going on in there, and we’re not privy to it. Tim’s not happy with the defense. Romo has reportedly turned into something not expected, and his private life is a mess. Bochy is making mistakes and the guys are batting out of order.

Kensuke Tanaka realized his dream last night. Little did he know how pedestrian it would be. But he brought some fun energy to the yard last night. I’m glad they called him up, he hit well in Frezno but this dude has some massive problems on defense. Not only did he have Steve Sax disease in Spring Training he made 15 errors at 2nd base at AAA. Keep him in LF and he might be ok but he’s a headcase once he gets to the infield……

  37. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 10, 2013 at 9:49 am

All due respect Mac, Nate is the same guy he always was, he’s just in a much friendlier yard. Last time I noticed his OPS is over 1.000 at home and .700 on the road. Playing here it would take him forever to hit 13 bombs.
And I’m starting to think ATT isn’t good for Pence either. Last two triples that he has hit 400 feet would have out easily if he had pulled a ball, but that doesn’t seem to be his game. He routinely takes pitches on inner half and extends zone to swing at stuff on outer half of the plate. For a guy with so much power he sure hits a lot of dribblers. Guy hustles, but I don’t think he and ATT are a good fit.
If you wanted to bring up Surkamp I wouldn’t mind seeing him take Z place. On the road he’s horrible but had good numbers so far this year at home–last night he was awful. Vs. the kid hitting .159, the type he should eat up as seasoned vet, he grooves one and kid blasts it out the yard. He had the single worst BA in the entire Mets LU except for the pitcher, and he f’s Z up. after he had walked yet another guy…all this after SF had just battled back to tie the game up for him. Waiver wire, pls, and just pay whatever you have to if someone wants him.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 10, 2013 at 10:51 am

I have no stats on this, but its my observation, and I’ve said it before several times, Zito has been horrible his entire stint with SF at immediately giving back leads just obtained, or just regained by big team effort after being down. A real confidence killer…

But overall, I am with Pawlie…I am just going to bask my ass off. Someone asks me “hey, what’s up with your Giants?” I am just going to tell them I am busy basking in the glow of two World Series titles in three years, and I will have to get back to them on that question.

The team gets into San Diego tonight so maybe they can get out and cut loose a little. Maybe the whole team will just follow Flan over to Humphrey’s to see Railroad Earth. Partying with a bunch of So Cal hippie chicks might not be a bad idea.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 10, 2013 at 10:57 am

I stayed at that Humphrey’s once. Pretty cool place right on the water. A bit away from downtown, but OK if DT is not important for you. The lobby had a pretty big saltwater fish tank, and I remember looking at a mooray eel they had in there – while I was watching him he suddenly grabbed a nearby fish for breakfast. Not cool for tank relations…

Excellent idea . . . I don’t get out there much anymore, but before I retired early – conferences, training, and business took me there frequently. I would suggest night clubs in the gas lamp district (The Tipsy Crow, Bar Dynamite, Voyeur, The Onyx Room, FLUXX, Spin, Analog, Stingaree, etc.). Shit, make it something along the lines of how the Europeans do it, e.g., Spain, Italy, and Greece. A Giants Tapas-tasting and bar-hopping night out – synonymous with a Madrid night out – will probably cure whatever the fuck is ailing them. 🙂

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 10, 2013 at 11:47 am

I’m down with the basking. I just hope the Giants play competitive ball. This past two months is ridiculous. It gives credence to the schmos that claim the Giants lucked out winning 2 of the past 3 WS. Which is lame. They won fair and square with great, dominant pitching, and there’s nothing wrong or lucky about that. They aren’t getting that now; plus the hitting has just fallen down the dumper. I hate to say it, but LA looks like the favorite. They’re not done shopping, either…

He has appeared in five games (two starts). His line so far: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks, and 5 BB.

I was listening to the radio feed, and they were discussing that perhaps something (physically or mechanically) is not right with Cain, and that that was possibly the reason for the early exit. Regardless…as Xoot said, this sucks like nothing has ever sucked before.

Just when you think it can’t get worse…my friend Demp28 provided the heads-up on this. Chad Gaudin charged with a gross and lewd act (dating back to January in Vegas):

Why now is this suddenly showing up in the media? Piling on?
In any event, if you’re wasted, is your first hazy thought to go to the nearest ER and grope somebody on a gurney? That’s beyond my comprehension…

Good thing I missed the first inning. Cain out already? WTF– Kickham needs work? This Cain $120M long term deal is not looking promising. On the radio, I haven’t heard that Cain is hurt or anything. If he weren’t hurt, Bochy must be fed up with everything and has no patience with more losing, that’s my only explanation.
If Wheeler continues to deal on the Gyros, you know the karma this year sucks…

Bingo. The only way this gets worse is a complete game shutout by young Zach. Well, not the only way.

I’m not putting everything on Cain, but he’s been the cornerstone and a leader for the team for the success they’ve had. The absolute most basic core of the team’s success has been Cain and Lincecum. There just isn’t much without those two doing well. It’s hard to build on anything for this season without a foundation. It’s a daunting task facing Sabean if Cain continues to struggle. It raises troubling questions about the Giants going forward into the next few years.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 10, 2013 at 1:57 pm

I don’t mean to downplay the contribution of the other players. But a team has to have a foundation and identity. And there is none these days. And it happened pretty quickly. I was feeling good about the roster going into this season, other than a little concerned about leftfield. Literally no one could have predicted what’s happened so far.

Sorry, long post. But desperate times call for desperate measures. I understand what some of you are saying about 2 out of the last 3 championships tempering this stretch of “worst team in baseball” (non)performance. A lot of us might have picked the G’s to win another one, but everyone knows how difficult that really is. Still, the way I see it, baseball, as a sport, or as a microcosm of life itself, has several functions, different for everyone: 1) Entertainment for the masses. 2) Baseball as therapy. 3) Civic pride in the hometown team. And, for the players themselves, baseball serves the function of a dream-come-true livelihood and career, both for fun and for loads of money.

This team is failing, as in a big *F*, in all of those things, except for loads of money for the players and team. Entertaining? Not to me. Therapy? Judging by the number of Flappers eyeing the ledge, this team is actually creating the need for therapy, not providing any. Civic pride? The play on the field is almost embarrassing. As for the players, they’re still making their money, and it is largely completely unearned. Fun for them? I highly doubt it. The manager has admitted he might be losing his mind. The players look like they’d rather be anywhere else than on the field. And this is not just a bad stretch; it’s pushing 2 months now. To me, even knowing that repeating would be difficult, it’s rather shocking, and extremely disappointing, the big fat *F* this team has *earned* and is earning, until further notice. If they can even just start being more entertaining, or somehow find a little pride in their play so we all can feel proud too, I have no problem with that. In the absence of erasing any of the *F*’s … there’s a hole in my summer where the Giants used to live. … Time for someone.. anyone.. to step up. Get mad. Slap some guys upside the head. I think it’ll be Buster. It’s his team, and his time, now. Ok, thanks, Flap.. .the Flap as therapy is ok too.. 

Yep, the losses are disconcerting. But, the WAY they’re playing and losing is disappointing. Maybe 2 rings in 3 years has had an impact on desire and focus. Hate to say that, but it’s out there…

  58. WilcoJoe's avatar WilcoJoe said, on July 10, 2013 at 2:00 pm

Well at least I shouldn’t have a problem scoring a cheap club level seat, if I make it to Flapapalozza 3.

  59. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 10, 2013 at 2:01 pm

    So….how about that 2014?
I got Posey at catcher, Scoots at 2b, and Craw at short, and Pagan in centerfield, and probably Sandoval at 3b. Left and rightfield will be wide open. The entire pitching staff other than Bumgarner and Romo is now a question mark. Cain will be there, but what Cain will we get?

    • WilcoJoe's avatar WilcoJoe said, on July 10, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Unless Sabean goes on an FA spending spree, 2014 is not looking any better. As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, it may be time to see what Lincecum, Romo, Pence and Panda could fetch in terms of prospects…Unfortunately I don’t think it would be much.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 10, 2013 at 2:09 pm

I’m just about there, WJ. It’s a tough thing breaking up a gang that did so well last year, but they’ve shot their wad, it looks like. And it’s time to go in rebuild mode.

In general reply to zumiee at 1:53, I’ve said on here often before, and beginning maybe a coupla seasons ago, I thought then and now that the poor offense going on over the last half decade was hugely pressurizing the pitching as a staff, and that even though they handled it miraculously, the impact on the pitchers could be tough long term. I think it’s coming home to roost. The guys that have been here since before the 2010 season are doing poorly…

  75. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 10, 2013 at 4:08 pm

The Giants b-cast team on these wraps is starting to bug me. This team sucks balls, they focus on Crawford getting a few hits. That’s cool, but they just got swept by the METS. I agree with Chuck that this team now is reminiscent of the mid-80s disaster team. Something has gone horribly wrong, off track. Sabean cannot be a buyer with this going on. He may be a seller — Pence? Panda? We need young bodies that can actually play and pitch. Wheeler vs. Kickham — there’s your divergent future right there…
