Retro- ’70s weekend!!
Break out your bell-bottoms, platform shoes, and polyester shirts. The ’70s are back in force this weekend, as the Dodgers and Reds are having a big series. Just like old times in the old NL West. And the Giants are fading out of contention. Just like old times in the old NL West. It’s a blast from the past. The Big Red Machine and the Big Blue Blob of Evil, back in the spotlight. The Reds haven’t won the World Series since Bush, Sr. was president; and the Dodgers haven’t won it all since Reagan.
Where have you gone, Joe Morgan? George Foster? Steve Garvey? Ron Cey? We know where Dusty Baker is. He’ll be right there in the ballpark, trying to get back to the World Series and win the big one as a manager. The opposing manager in that game is called Donnie Baseball. Seriously? His nickname is Donnie Baseball? We Giants fans know his true nickname. He is, and forever shall be, Donnie Two-Trips.
So….Go Reds, tonight! They better not lay an egg against the Dodgers, after having hammered the Giants. That would be not awesome. Joe would agree.
Willie waited patiently, sipping his coffee, but no thread. Nipper was really distressed about this. Anywho, no Giants baseball this evening and as you pointed out Flav, we can root for the Reds instead. By the by, the Rangers are interested in Pence. Tick tock, tick tock, as the 31st deadline approaches.
Actually, it was little ol’ me that posted it. The Reds/Dodgers series gave me a flashback. 🙂
Ahhh haaa! OK, Zum . . . I see that now. Good post. 🙂
Also, if you are going retro, don’t forget the “White Man Overbite” dance move made famous by Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally. Classic.
Good post, Zumie.
Must be the slowest day ever recorded at the OFD.
I’m afraid the Reds will suffer a letdown now after getting some payback against the G’s.
Here’s some ’70s retro from Baggs. Not good news:
“The Reds’ 55 hits (vs. the Giants this week) were the most by a team in San Francisco in a series since mutton chops were all the rage — July 1-4, 1977, when the Dodgers had 60 hits in four games at Candlestick Park.”
yeah but who out hit who last night, tell me that! Um, nevermind…..
Thanks for the thread Zumiee, I was busy this morning and honestly couldn’t think of anything interesting to post. This season of sucking kinda snuck up on me…..
In the Braves game today, there was a wild pitch during an intentional walk, but the runner was not able to advance. And the broadcaster made a big point about how that’s why the pitcher has to pitch the 4 balls, instead of the ump just giving the batter the base automatically, as if that was such a THRILLING moment today.
Yeah, I’ve been watching intentional walks for 40+ years, and that was a thrill worth waiting for.
Also in the Braves game, the ump totally blew a call, where a ball hit the railing over the wall in the Mets ballpark and bounced back in play. It should have been a ground-rule double, but the runner got a triple. It wasn’t reviewable because it wasn’t on a homerun controversy; it was on a ground-rule double controversy, which isn’t reviewable. So, the Braves manager argued for 5 minutes and got thrown out of the game.
But we can’t have more replay, because that would slow down the game. 🙂
And the ump refused to get help from any of the other umps, which really sent the Braves manager over the edge.
I think that was Wright’s triple.

Glad to hear the good news Twin!
everyone is pulling for you, as you know.
Great news Mike! As someone said the other day, this place is kinda boring without you…No offense to the rest of you guys 😉
you’re the straw that stirs the drink…….

Wow, that is a good thread. Gotta admit I dug the big red machine. They used to call Sparky Anderson *Captain Hook* for changing relief pitchers. Seem like otherwise it was Yanks vs. Dodgers after A’s got broken up. Hope the Reds (don’t care much for this version) stay hot. Baker of course played many years there.
Cubs and Nate beat AZ in 12 last night after blowing all of a 6-0 lead they built off Ian Kennedy, with neither pen being very good. AZ had to be bummed cubs dealt off Garza to someone else and then beat them. AZ has to do something to improve pen–Hernandez took the L and bell nearly did. Ziegler and Putz are nothing.
One of the reasons that I am not hopeful that Sabean will try to take the trade route to improve the Giants chances of a playoff berth is because there are now more buyers than sellers. A number of columnists have pointed this out since the additional wild card has been added, i.e., there is a lower bar for entry into the postseason, which means you will have more buyers.
Some, like Schulman – he wrote an excellent column in The Splash today – think the Giants would be wise to sign Pence to a long term deal due to the paucity of outfielders available. He also feels that it would not be a good idea for the Giants to trade Sandoval as well, mainly because the Panda will have plenty of incentive to lose weight/get in shape in his final year before free agency. Regarding Lincecum, he says make him a one year qualifying offer of $14 million and if Timmy doesn’t accept it, at least they get another draft pick. Actually, I think there is a good chance he would accept it. Of all the pieces available, he indicates Lopez should be the likely candidate for the trade block.
Me? I like his arguments, but I also think it would be wise for the Giants to take advantage of what appears to be a clear seller’s market. Who knows? if the price is right, Sabes might be able to make out like a bandit as the Cubs did with Garza and the Rangers. If you haven’t read Schulman’s column, here it is:

Interesting points by Hank…The one I most agree with is the Lincecum thought. The only way I could see them moving Pence is if they receive a greater haul then what a compensatory pick would give them if they made him an offer that he rejected. Same holds true for Timmy.
I’m not that worried about Sabes trading anyone, he’s never done it and won’t do it this year with the qualifying offer/compensatory pic being far more valuable than anything we would get for Timmy, Pence or Panda. It’s fun to kick around though……
I’m watching the A’s game. I try to do this now and then. I don’t hate the A’s anymore, I actually totally respect what they’ve done the last couple of years. Plus, winning 2 WS’s makes it a lot easier to appreciate what other teams are doing. 🙂
As some of you know, watching A’s games is no picnic. I’ve been trying to figure out why it’s so bad and there are a lot of reasons. But I’ve settled on one main one: too much organ music. It’s too much fake generated noise.
If they’re going with fake noise, personally, I’m for more cow bell. Way more cow bell. 🙂
Yeah more cow bell!
Well Sabes would be a complete idiot if he traded Pence. The only Outfielder that puts up numbers and plays the game the right way,”All-out hustle” .{Shit he’s even Stealing bases better tben anyone else)
The Giants have only Pence in the OF and then a bunch of 4-5 losers led by Blorres,Blanko, and French Fry.
Fucking pathetic thinkin they trade Pence and needing probably all 3 Of slots filled not knowing if Pagan even shows healthy and movitated next year.
Replied to you Kat on my blog.
New post on my blog . . . http://aroundtheworldwithblade.wordpress.com/2013/07/25/grand-teton-mountains-and-yellowstone-national-park/
Fucking Dusty Baker . . . He always goes to the well too much with regard to his starting pitching. Latos is obviously tiring . . . GET HIM THE FUCK OUT OF THERE YA DUMB SHIT.
Dipshit finally puts in Parra. Baker is a dinosaur – one of the last managers that has no use for Sabermetrics.
Dogs lose! Criminy. Is this what I’ve come to?
BLEEP!
Giants will take any help they can get Chuck.
Big Red Machine 2013 version, kicking some major ass of late.
Glad to see them kick tbe cesspool of Doggy town LA tonight
Barely on life support for the Giants, but any team including the Astros (ha ha) beating the dog-shit of LA , or they really just an extension of Mexico like San Diego? Let teams like the Reds roll right now,but if some miracle we get in,in the back of their minds ,we have the playoff experience and Boch will out manage Dusty again.
Thx blade for link to the Henry column, he makes a lot of good points. I would doubt there would be good enough offers for anyone to warrant a deal….outside of Romo. Baggs mentioned him a week or so ago as most desirable target by other teams, and I’m sure he would generate quite a lot of interest. Hope he stays, tho.
Reading the comments that followed (on the Gate, not here) I noticed unanimity of Sando-hate, with almost all ready to dump him off for whatever. While 3b might be ultimate destination for Posey (wow there is a thread waiting to happen), I think that position is going to be tough to fill, esp with middle order bat. The way SF has pitched this year, I don’t think playing Arias there would have helped run differential. I didn’t see anything out of any of the kids, tho maybe Abreu could play there. And that would be my biggest concern—finding an adequate replacement for anyone Sabes would dump, including Lopez.
I would take 3B Matt Dominguez,Willie. He is a better 3B then Pablo with better numbers except avg.He is only gonna get better.
