A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Turning the Page to 4.0

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 9, 2013

Flapalooza is the type of party that just keeps on giving. I wasn’t ready to handle or manage the explosion of pics that came out of this event. I’ve dumped some into the photo bucket and a bunch on to Facebook. ChiPower has created some type of shared album on The Book that we can contribute to though I admit to not knowing how to do that at first glance. If you want to access my FB page just email me and I’ll give you the link to my page.

Final Note on 3.0: There were several noticeably absent faces due to probably a bunch of real life 3-D reasons. But seeing as how we were all wandering around the park with “We Score We WIn” shirts on one of the biggest absentees was FerretHead who designed the “WSWW” sign and proudly donned it at one of the playoff games last year. It unintentionally became a physical mascot for The Flap and now, the Flap jersey’s that will be worn at all future Flap Stormings. Luckily, she managed to see some of the pics on Facebook and here was her response:

“You guys look AWESOME!!! Sorry I missed it…and for being awol this season – you are always in my heart….and the shirts almost made me cry!

Hope you’re good, kid. Don’t be such a stranger and hopefully next year you get your own jersey and storm the park with us…..

At SJ airport and relaxing before my flight. I love Southwest airlines – only airline outfit that has a clue on how to get people on planes efficiently and equally important, they don’t nickle and dime ya to death for a blanket, luggage, pillow, and toilet paper (ok, I’m kidding about that last one).

Flavor, I want to thank you first – you made sure I didn’t gain a gazillion pounds while staying at my mom’s house. I really appreciate you coming through on the gym passes. It was great chatting with you at the gym, game, and on the way home. We shared some heavy shit on the ride and I’m all good with it. What an awesome life you’ve managed to provide for yourself and Katie. Keep rockin’ dude!

Tom, I really appreciate the job you did on coordinating the T-Shirt thingy. Yeah, it’s been said a lot, but it can’t be said enough – without you, it wouldn’t have happened.

Pawlie, I am glad we met in the morning before Flav and company stormed the citadel. It was very gracious of you buying breakfast and treating my aunt like your OWN aunt. She loves you!

The rest of you mugs that were there – James, Zumiee, San Dawg, Chuck, Chi, Ted, and, and, and???? Damn, I hope I didn’t leave anyone out. Anywho, you guys all rock in 3D, as you do in 2D. In short, this was ONE OF MY EPIC DAYS OF ALL TIME!

Next season, I am hoping the rest of the Flappers show up and can make it. I am going to try to do this again. By the by, special mention to San Dawg and Pawlie, who flew out from their respective cities, San Diego and Syracuse. Wow!

What Blade said. No seriously, as in “World Serious” it was good to finally meet a bunch of you Flappers (Blade is the only one who I had met previously). What a great bunch of guys (and I think it was snarkk who said so, even if we were not Giants fans). Gail (my better half) really liked all of you and commented what a great bunch you all are (I think she REALLY gets it now how much this Flap community means to me).

I wish I had spent more time with you guys in 219 once the gracious usher found a row for Flap Nation. I will have to make up for that one at Flapalooza 4 (and will have to remember my copies of Pawlie’s books so that he can sign them – me assuming already that Pawlie will be there).

And yes, I wish Ferret could have been there. Next year, Jean…

And I agree with Steve, it was especially cool that Pawlie and San Diggity flew in for the gathering. (Pawlie – looking for word on the Finnerty’s shirts.)

Make it an awesome day Flap Nation.

Great day yesterday – Gigantes and Niners both with wins!

One thing I forgot to mention is that some of us that arrived early at the Flapalooza got to see Marty Lurie’s 2012 WS Ring. Thing is huge. You don’t need barbells to work out, just put in on your finger and do arm lifts…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 9, 2013 at 4:39 pm

Yeah, agree Tom. Pawlie tried it on for size and I took a photo (using his camera). Where do you wear those things? Answer – Who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      I frickin’ want one!

Back home. Nothing like home sweet, home. The air conditioning is sweet and plus, I get to rock my bed which means that my feet don’t hang over the end. Yes, my mom still has my bed from grade school. 😦

Yeah, it all seemed to fly by very fast. It was awesome to meet everyone. Especially Dawg, as we may be family soon! just kidding!!

To add to the story, I met Dawg’s son Matt 2 weeks ago as Allison and he went to a concert in Monterey, and we were staying in Aptos at the time. This, of course was preceded by my daughter meeting Dawg in San Diego a week earlier. She had nothing but great things to say about Dawg, and wanted me to thank you again for the wonderful salad.

So I have known Dawg through the blog for 3+ years. The week before I meet him in person, I meet his (unknown to me) son. It’s all very mind-blowing. . .

well, I guess it’s over-the-top for kids these days to keep detailed track of what blogs their dad’s are frequenting, right? 🙂
I can’t tell you how many people have emailed me asking me if this story is for real. It’s over 100….

Big Time Timmy Jim Thought of the Day: I really need a win from Timmy tonight. I don’t really care how he gets it done, my ERA and WHIP are solid, but there are 3-4 points up for grabs in the Win category of my main NFBC league and if I can move 2 or 3 points in that category I’m winning that league. And I really want to win this league. For reference, it’s a 12 team league, right now I have 8 points with 84 wins. But 11 points is at 87 wins. Tonight I started Timmy and Ubaldo, sat Cole. We’ll see what happens. You set your LU weekly in this league so 2 start weeks are super valuable, I just didn’t want to sweat Cole in Texas and whatever 6-man rotation his manager might have him in now (he might not get another start this week)
hey, I recognize few of you are even reading this anymore besides Blade and maybe GH. But I’m venting. It’s therapy. The payoff for first place is $1650, 2nd is $375 (and there is no one close to us in 3rd). So every start er I send out there counts big time at this point with only 3 weeks left to go…….

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 9, 2013 at 5:43 pm

I’m rooting for you Flav. Kick ass and take names. By the by, do you still have money for any free agent pitchers? Or, is that out of the question? Kid named Martin Perez, who plays in Texas. Bozo has him in the Flap league and it was a good pick up.

I hate to say it, but I wouldn’t touch Petit in Fantasy . . . Too much history of being mediocre and I doubt if he even comes close to replicating his Friday start. Anywho, he goes against the Sherpas next and even though the Sherpas are not the Sherpas without Cargo and Fowler, they can still hit.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 9, 2013 at 5:56 pm

I’ve got $11 buck left. Perez got picked up 2 weeks ago. I’m good to go on players, and the ww is barren anyway. I’ll use my last 11 for emergency purposes but I have a roster of 30 so I’m probably good to go at least with players who are playing. This “shutdown the young pitcher at his innings limit” thing is pissing me off though. I only get to use Iwakuma for one more start. Not sure about Gray who has been a fantastic $1 pick up for me.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 9, 2013 at 6:06 pm

I’m going to be cautiously optimistic with Petit. For starters, I’d really like to see his wife jump up and down again. Secondly, he might be taking steroids now. Thirdly, if both of the first two things continue on, I’m cool with him as our #5…….

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 9, 2013 at 6:06 pm

How about Wacha? He’s at 15-25 % ownership in most leagues. Actually, I just picked him up in the Flap.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 9, 2013 at 6:08 pm

Wacha goes against Seattle (fairly easy opponent) on the 14th.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 9, 2013 at 6:52 pm

He was picked up a few weeks ago. The % owned thing from ESPn and Yahoo are worthless in pay leagues. Those numbers are calculated from a million leagues that aren’t operating anymore (and tons of them get abandoned as the season goes on) or they are occupied by owners not really playing the game anymore if they’re out of it. Plus, we have 30 player rosters at NFBC so you can hide guys on the bench.
But I like both of the pitchers you listed……

I have received one additional request for a Flap T shirt. If you want one, shoot an email to BF by tomorrow night, he’ll forward it to me. I’ll make just one more order, so you need to get yours in if you want one. Around $30 for a short sleeve, including postage (US delivery) packaging and “handling”. Long sleeve is $5 more. 50-50 cotton/poly combo shirt, not too much shrinkage. If you’re George Costanza, you’ll appreciate that…

I want to encourage anyone who considers themselves a Flap vet for life to buy one of these. They are bad ass. And for as long as I keep this place going, and I have tons of steam for it right now, the army I storm AT&T with at each Flapalooza will be wearing this shirt. And the more worn out it is the better–that’s a badge of honor. I will wear this thing till a decent gust of wind sends the last remaining connected threads off to the heavens……

The salad I made for Chuck’s daughter and delivered to the beach was amazing, and featured home-grown tomatoes from San Dawg Farms. It had a little bit of everything in it except for some beets from Shrute Farms or some “ammonds” (as my dad would say) from Zumie Farms.

I also must chime in regarding Blade’s comment that James comes across differently in person than you might expect. I had totally the same feeling after Flapalooza 1. James is super cool and was a great sport about hearing everyone out who wanted to give him their take regarding how bad our hitting is. Even at the end of the night when Snarkk and I were resetting the “Giants haven’t developed an outfielder since the Vietnam War” take, he patiently let us babble on.
…and for me, Blade was a bit of surprise. Way more of a chill dude than I would have guessed. I expected Type A intensity from him, but, while you can tell he is obviously a disciplined guy, he was awesome to chat with and always had a smile on his face.
Plus, NOBODY in our group rocked an Orange Sombrero more naturally than Blade.

Looks like Cole will get the win against Texas as well. As much as I would like to “execute” Darvish (whom I own), this is all on Texas hitters. Dude pitched lights out for almost 7 innings before the Pirates scored.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 9, 2013 at 7:00 pm

If Timmy pitches well tonight I’m cool with the fuck up of leaving Cole on the bench. That wasn’t a park I wanted to risk him pitching in, even with the possibility of him getting a 2nd home start this week at home v the Cubs. There’s uncertainty with the Pirates pitching schedule. Even still, I didn’t want to risk him getting blasted in Tex with Ubaldo and Timmy going tonight, too (2 guys who know what getting blasted is like). While I’m not worried about my ERA and WHIP I couldn’t have 3 starting pitchers eat it on a Monday.
Now Timmy’s start is my main focus tonight……

  11. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 9, 2013 at 7:23 pm

Having been to all 3 (point zeros) I’ve only got 3 guys to *review* from 3.0:
Zumie: exactly as I thought he would be minus the *him being taller than me* thing. That’s unusual during my days of walking the earth. He had a very zen-like quality that I liked–yet very personable. I need more zen-like people in my life to help balance out my *crazy eyes*. I’ve always been baffled by those with more balance, more homeostasis, in their lives than me. Maybe at 4.0 I’ll ask him how he does it……
UncaChuck: sharp dude. Had a little bit more of an edge to him than I wasn’t expecting. Not afraid to swear in conversation and if you have a high IQ, that’s ok in my book. Liked him A LOT. Didn’t seem like a guy who would ever use the word “Skippy” to start shit-talking someone but what the hell, it is the blog world and *Skippy* might just be his blog-intro for “STFU”. I dunno.
ChiPower: EXACTLY as I thought he would be. Super cool dude. Same with his girlfriend (minus the dude-part).

And then said a moment later the first pitch was low. Got it wrong, twice. I’m sure all the viewers were scratching their heads on that one.

Timmy goes 7 full, 2 runs, scatters 7 hits, only one BB, with 3 Ks. At least I assume he’s not going to bat in the bottom of this inning. And, one run was a sheer giveaway mental mistake, his fault not covering home on the infield grounder he and Posey fought over. Wasn’t hit at all hard tonight, some good defense behind. He’s making money every game he pitches like this…

  18. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 9, 2013 at 9:18 pm

Well, they have Timmy going over 100 pitches, took Bum out the other night under 100, I guess to save that younger arm. Now 8 full innings, just 2 runs he’s allowed. That’s a quality start in anybody’s book. Let’s get some damn runs…

On that botched pop-up, the biggest culprit was Scutaro, IMO. The secondbaseman has the best angle, and Scutaro’s effort seemed kind of half-a##ed.

  30. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 9, 2013 at 9:46 pm

I don’t understand why Pence can’t bunt for a hit, with the result even if he gets out, that we have a guy on second with just one out. Instead, a nothing fly ball that doesn’t do any good. Oh, I guess I understand it. Bochy hates the bunt, even when it can get you a guy on 2nd, the winning run, with only one out…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 9, 2013 at 9:49 pm

One more thing about the botched pop-up…..Tulo, the runner on first, made it safely to secondbase; but on a similar play Saturday night Belt got thrown out at second, and a rally opportunity was lost. Just those little “winning edge” things that the Giants aren’t getting done in 2013.
Obviously, Belt is one of the heroes tonight, so far, so I’m not trying to pick on Belt. There are many Giants this season who haven’t taken advantage of some “winning edge” moments.

I’m still hoping against hope the G’s can get somewhere near .500. Good enough for 3rd .. .

Chuck, I’m hoping for the same thing. Shit, they can be in 3rd by Friday with any sort of similar play like this game. Sherpas and Friars must fall.
