A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Taking a Moment to Honor the Warriors Season

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 4, 2014

I know we just swept the Braves in Atlanta for the first time since 1988 and that is fantastic but I’m in full b-ball reflective mode right now. Still processing the Warriors epic game 7 loss. I read a horrible blog post written by Lowell Cohn early this morning about his take on the Warriors season. I won’t re-blog it here, it doesn’t deserve to go viral. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ Lowell Cohn has become a poor man’s Glenn Dickey and the expensive version wasn’t worth the newspaper it was written on. Google Cohn’s post if you feel like reading drivel and nonsense.

I am not a big Mark Jackson fan but I hope the Warriors bring him back and give him an extension. Simply put, Warrior players play for him. That’s all that matters in the NBA. They hear his voice. They love him. Now, you could argue that his voice leaves a little to be desired in terms of outcome, x’s and o’s, etc. But you don’t let a coach leave who just dropped 51 wins in your lap and whose players would proudly follow off a steep cliff like brain dead lemmings. They just lost Game 7 without their first 2 string big men. What team in NBA history could withstand those 2 blows?

Did they cough up a chance to win last night? Sure, that could be argued. But who was supposed to guard Jordan and Griffin for 4 full quarters? Hilton Armstrong? Shit, they did the best they could with what they had. I read some nonsense about Festivus for the Restofus stepping up and playing in that game. Was that a joke? ย First of all, if this was 30 years ago, that dude woulda been playing a month ago. Secondly, I’m not really interested in Ezili gingerly coming out of some fake-o 1:1 drills in practice to take on the beastliness of Jordan or Griffin in game time speed……

Give me a loss with the heroic efforts of Curry and Iggy and Draymond and Speights. I’ll take that and proudly ask for another. That was my team. And you support your team. Especially when they leave everything they have on the court besides their vital organs, as they did last night.

And Lowell Cohn can go fuck himself……

Amazing basketball game last night. I’m more of a Kings fan than Warriors, but I watched the whole game last night and was pulling hard for the Warriors. When Curry made the half-court shot, I was sure they would win, all the mojo was going their way; but he didn’t beat the clock, unfortunately.

I agree with Pawlie that it’s not a surprise that Cain went on the DL. We’ve all cut a finger, and know what that’s like; and it seemed wildly optimistic that Cain would be ready 5 days later to throw a cow-hide ball 90 MPH off that finger.
What? The Giants mislead the public about an injury?! Who’s ever heard of such a thing?

All I know is that it better not mean that anyone other than Bumgarner is starting on Friday night in LA when I’m at the game.

Cool! For all the ragging I do on the Dodgers, Dodger Stadium is a pretty cool place to see a game. I saw one game there, about 10 years ago. I saw them play the Cubs.

The last time I was there was the day after the Brian Stow incident. Belt hit his first HR, which was to dead center off of Billingsley. Dirty was the starter, betrayed by a Sandoval error and then his own. The fans around us were very kumbaya.

Awesome. I have never seen a game there…need to knock that one out. Have a great time, and we’ll look forward to your report from the Latrine.

Typical Giants. No inkling a guy is ready to hit the DL, quite the contrary. Then, oops, yeah you guys know his finger isn’t healing — so he’s hitting the DL. Next, we’ll hear that for the lunch room, Murph ordered in two additional restaurant sets of chef-grade Wusthof knives and a commercial grade meat slicer…

I say again, who’s bright idea is it for pitchers to be playing with knives in the spread room? At $600K per start, Cain’s sandwich cost is now up to $1.2 million. Next time, have the clubbie get a 12″ Subway for $5, or have him spread the tuna on rye, and have HIM cut the damn thing in half, OK?…

    • James's avatar James said, on May 4, 2014 at 9:54 pm

That’s what’s truly horrific and tragic here, of course — these guys never have to eat like plebs, yet the sandwich Cain put together probably wasn’t as good as a $5 Subway offering.

I did watch the W’s game last night, my first of the season. It was exciting and I got pulled in quickly. I also love great shooting, if only because the only thing close to a hoops skill I have is the ability to very occasionally develop some zen with the basket from 20 feet out. I admired the precision of the points off turnover stat, although I immediately wondered if there was, in general, any more predictive value to it than there is to simple cumulative turnover stats.

I’ve got a finger of Laphroaig 10 year old going with half an ice cube. Bottled in 2012, it’s the cask strength blend coming in at a monster 58.6% alc/vol, or about 117 proof. Now that’s a nice celebration of a sweep. Without the cube, the peat of Islay is a bit too palpable, too harsh for my taste. With just the touch of water, booting out the cube after about 3 or 4 minutes, it simmers down to a soothing warm smokiness with more than a hint of the North Atlantic. SanDawg, this is where a little water enhances the experience…

PK, they didn’t do much to improve the team in off season, and hitters not named McCutchen not very imposing. Any drop off in pitching was gonna hurt them. I think Grilli has already blown a couple games and he was lights out last year. Always dug the Pirates, hope they can give STL a run like last year.

First round L is disappointing but West Conference in the NBA is full of dang good teams. I think 11th seed in West would have made #8 playoff spot in the East. All 4 series in West were barn burners.
Jack’s guys do play their ass off for him. I think ownership will *encourage* him to bring in older sidekick (that has played the game at high level like Jack) that can handle x/o stuff and help development of couple young guys like Ezeli. But it’s gotta be his guy (maybe an old teammate) and someone he knows his players will be comfortable with
Biggest issue all year start to finish (the drama being a side issue really) was health. I don’t think Igs was really as healthy as made out and obviously Bogut and O’Neal had major problems off and on all year. Big men are at a premium anyway and no team has the kind of depth to survive that.
Bottom line they are highly entertaining with excellent young core and supportive fan base and have proven to be a legit force to be reckoned with in NBA for last 2 years, and much improved in defense and rebounding. Been a long time since any one regarded Warriors in those terms.

I have never like Cohn…even from his days with the Chron prior to moving to the Press Demigod. Fucking dude is a blow-hard.

Great thread, Flavor. I agree with you. I too am not a huge Jackson fan. I think there are other coaches out there who could certainly do better from an x’s and o’s point, but would the players play for that person (Stever Kerr) as they do for Jackson.

I think it will be a mistake if Lacob can Jackson. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Loving the way the boys in the Orange and Black are playing. They are putting together all the pieces better than at any point in this young season. We’re finally seeing some decent starting pitching, coupled with great D (MudBug’s play to end Saturday night’s game was fucking awesome), and timely hitting. And, the bombs just keep on coming. I saw Morse look suspect on one play (may have been Saturday night…maybe Friday, but then he made a nice read on a ball at the fence yesterday). I’ll take his somewhat questionable D if he keeps raking the way he has in April. LOVING that signing right along with the Tim Hudson one. And I think the bullpen is stronger this year than the past couple.

Nice way to start the roadie…now let’s win a series in Pittsburgh. Damned Bucs always seem to play the Giants tough, there. And I don’t see Cainer going onto the DL as a real issue. Supposedly one more start, and the way that Petit has filled-in when required, that has not been an issue.

Kerr coaching Knicks is a curious move though I couldn’t care less about them. As one blogger said, you’d have a guy who has never coached before with a GM who has never done that before (Phil) and an owner (Dolan) with no clue either. And should Kerr struggle, what then?

Phil did a lot of *kumbaya* stuff in Bulls days, giving out books to players and going through Lakota Sioux rituals and of course was big Shunryu Suzuki (whose collected writings I truly admire) Zen guy. Even in Jordan days this was odd; I don’t see that stuff working for Steve Kerr or being accepted by team full of millionaires like today.

Even the triangle O, where phil was always helped out on bench by Tex Winter who wrote the book himself, features a lot of movement of ball and players and way less iso and screen and roll. MJ admitted it took him years to grasp options and concepts; Melo buys into this?

? for beer drinkers out there in Flap land, where I hope everyone hoists one today in honor of victory by Mexico over the French at Queretaro, and hopefully later by Giants handling Pirates and continuing nice run of Ws:

I read last week about increase of bars with *nitro* beers on tap. These use nitrogen which gives the beer a creamier texture ala Guinness, a beer I’ve always enjoyed. Anyone had one of these? Any idea where you could go to try one out? Supposedly these types of beer are best currently enjoyed on tap tho there are a few available in stores from local brewers. Salud!

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 8:47 am

I’ve always enjoyed a Boddingtons nitro tap. The canned variety is OK, but not as good as the tap. Not a great beer, but smooth, a little bitter, good cool, often served too cold, and should be in any kind of a decent British pub. I used to have a few every Friday in a place called the Ale House in Houston, an institution of brew in that town. Place was torn down for development…

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on May 5, 2014 at 10:32 am

Guiness makes their stout in a can with this nitrogen contraption. It is called a widget and is nitrogen filled. In bars, I think all Guiness (and some of the other Brit beers) use a combo of nitrogen and CO2 to dispense the beer. Here is info on the widget used in Guiness….

The Warriors are actually very close to being a top-tier team. However, they can throw it all away by letting Jackson go.

They missed J Jacks terribly this year as all the pressure was on Curry to score AND deal. And he did for the most part. Ezieli will be fine, I guess, but they need a true center and they need to move away from Bogut. He can’t stay on the floor long enough. Iggy was kinda disappointing. I thought they’d be getting more offense out of him. He was banged up most of the year, but he needs to contribute more on O. They have a strong corps of good young players in Thompson, Green, and Barnes. But the thing I get so annoyed with is the stupid foiuls they regularly commit. Thompson, Lee, and Green especially. Committing a foul in the backcourt, or in transition is fine, as long as you have a foul to give, and you don’t have 4 fouls. Green, Lee, and Thompson all did that in the playoffs. Fouling on 3 point shots is also bad bad bad. Plus, I never see any team get as many moving screen calls as I do the Warriors. This shit should be easy to fix but apparently it ain’t.

Lee is likely too pricey to move, but he is all over the place. He and Green were playing great on the give-and-go in games 6 and 7 until Lee turned the ball over 3 times down the stretch. His only defensive move appears to be fouling. And he was toasted when they tried to use him on Griffin. But he’s a good cutter and passer and he moves well without the ball. He’s good enough on offense, but a defensive liability. Speights was good in his role. Occasionally greaet.

As well as Blake ran the 2nd team, he’s likely gone. Same with Jordan Crawford. O’Neal is probably going to retire on a sad note. Total cheap shot by big baby. Love O’Neal’s comments after game 6, though. He ripped Baby pretty good, along with the refs. Thompson surprised me a little by developing an inside game. He was sucking in the middle of the season, and finally starting attacking the hoop. I think it ended up helping his deep shota as he got untracked and finished the season strong. However, he disappeared in game 7.

All in all, you have to call this season a success for the Dubs. Especially when you see how banged up they were going into the playoffs. Get a ball handler and a big man. Shit, get Jacks back and draft a center.

And, BTW, if the Clippers are supposed to be so tough, why do they whine so fucking much? I mean, shit. Paul slams into Curry from behind without even trying to get the ball, and he acts like Curry popped him in the mouth. Hs should have been T’ed up for his reaction. Lee was getting mugged all series and didn’t get shit for calls. Griffin dribbles out of control into the lane and falls down without any contact and flings the ball in the air and acts like he was shot by Speights. The ref’s look was priceless on that play. For once they didn’t call the flop. Those 2 guys are all-world players, but I can’t stand either of them for the stupid classless shit and the constant flopping they pull all the time. At some point there has to be a penalty (techincal foul) for flopping.

I’ve watched a fair number of Clipper games this year (I got into fantasy basketball for the first time ever this year) and I was amazed at how bitchy Jordan would get every time someone did so much as touch him. Shit, breath on the guy and he cries like a big pussy……

Still trying to figure out what actually happened to Cain. What would he need to be cutting or slicing? A clubhouse spread has everything already sliced and diced and ready for the making. And who tries to catch a dropped knife? I drop a knife, I get out of the way, pick it up, wash it, move on. no harm no foul.

Maybe he was practicing for a Vegas lounge act as a post-baseball career move. I want to know if concert pianists or classical guitarists or the Black Widow pool player lady or anybody that makes a very good living with their hands and fingers being required to be in one piece get near knives on a regular basis, which apparently the Giants pitching staff does. If Horowitz worked in a deli cutting corned beef on off days from Carnegie Hall, then I’ll quit my incredulity at this Giants knife thing. Maybe Murph has never heard of plastic knives…

I didn’t mind Lowell Cohn much when he was on the Chron. He as a bit of an S disturber then, but not as much as now. Maybe since the newspaper biz went to hell, and he’s downgraded to a third rate paper in a small metro, he figures he has to be a real big S disturber to get some pub. He and Bill Walsh were pretty tight, which I find head-scratchingly interesting…

I really give the Warriors a lot of credit for not starting a few fights in this series. There were ample opportunities. Matt Barnes was his usual hard-fouling chippy self. And the shit they were regularly pulling on Curry (Griffin falling on top of him at every opportunity, hard screens, etc) was asinine. Throw in the Bib Baby play and I’m hard-pressed not to elbow Paul in the face coming down the lane. You want to cry about something? Here ya go, skippy. Speights did get a good shot on him after the O’Neal play.

An excellent “feel good” column by ESPN’s David Schoenfield about the Giants. Most noteworthy, he feels it is a misconception that this is still a team built around its rotation (something I agree with); and equally important, the offense hasnโ€™t even “kicked it into high gear” yet . . . Again, something I agree with, e.g., see Pablo Sandoval for Exhibit A.

Lot’s of good stuff in this column for the BEST TEAM in the West Division . . .

Snarkk, I remember James Taylor cut his hand trying to cut a coconut or something, back in the late ’70s or early ’80s. He couldn’t play his guitar for a few months. But once again, why? Why was a millionaire musician trying to cut a coconut? The only thing I can think of is that musicians, and athletes, at times, just want to do stuff that regular folks do. They just want to be regular people sometimes, and once in a great while one of them gets a freak injury.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 1:19 pm

You may be right. But, these people are not regular guys, that’s why they make the big coin. A while back on this blog, I said that I think the umps are wrong on the close calls about 50% of the time. I’m almost proven right. ๐Ÿ™‚
As Nate Silver and our James would probably say: “You could just literally flip a coin on the close calls, and be about as accurate as the umps.”

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 1:10 pm

An MLB ump job is one of the cushiest in this country. Has to be. MLB used to tout that the umps got the calls 97% correct or some such. Sure, since they were counting guys at first out by two steps, or calling a guy out who pops out to the second baseman. But, the close calls, that’s where they blow it regularly. Any of the Flappers, hell any of us at the mini-Flapalooza after the first couple of pops in the evening could have gone out into the field and been first base ump and done just as well as the “trained” ump. Seriously. And, if we blew a call, replay bails us out. After the game, we hit the hotel bar and pound the per diem at some fancy restaurant. No wonder tools like Joe West won’t retire…

  23. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 5, 2014 at 1:06 pm

I will say this, though; the umps seem to be taking it well, overall. I’m not sensing wounded pride or extra attitude on the umps about all of this, at least from their body language.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 1:15 pm

Their pride has been proven to be based on quicksand, as most of us predicted. So if they do feel wounded, TS. They’re fallible, big time fallible, and replay helps show that and shut down their raging egos that I don’t need to see or hear. If there were no umps on the field, I wouldn’t care one bit. I don’t wanna know their names, I don’t wanna hear that one has a low zone and the other an outside zone, etc. If a robot called balls and strikes, it’d be fine with me. I like baseball tradition, but not a tradition that rewards incompetence and fat waistlines and guys guessing at calls because they’re out of position on the play. In the old days, umps added flavor to the game. Now, they’ve gotten too big for their britches, for no reason…

    • James's avatar James said, on May 5, 2014 at 2:56 pm

It’s totally vindictive, whipping boy treatment. Bochy is a fucking ignorant, dumbass child in this regard. Belt is slumping, yet the team is winning. It stands to reason, you keep playing him — like Pablo — until he emerges from the slump.

It also shows that the professional advisors don’t pay attention to the evidence in front of them. If you want to sit Belt, do it against the 95 mph fastball from the right side.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 2:59 pm

Could not have said it better. Insert Belt’s good history against LHPs, with a LHP going tonight. Belt is getting $3M to either be the starting 1bman, or he isn’t. Pablo has done shit since the season started, hitting 80 points below Belt, still hacking constantly at balls over his neck and in the dirt, yet is in there every day so he can “come out of it”. Belt has 8 dingers and led the team in hitting the first few weeks, and has played great D. I am fed up with how Bochy mismanages Belt. They will probably trade Belt and sign Panda to a multi-year extension over the offseason…

      • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on May 5, 2014 at 3:10 pm

Overall, I do like Bochy as a manager, and I think he is one of the best. But the way he has dealt with Belt is totall bullshit. I heard a recap of an interview between Belt and Marty Lurie. Belt hit the nail on the head…talking about how guys go through slumps, and how you just keep plugging. He said he felt like he is just in one of those times and feels confident he will come through it. Could not agree with Belt more in that regards.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 3:17 pm

I remember when Ishi was the starting first baseman and had a horrendous 2 month+ “slump” where he couldn’t hit the ocean if he fell out of the boat. He played essentially every day until enough was enough and they figured he wasn’t coming out of it. Here, Belt goes into a two week slump and it’s time to F with him. I swear, it’s like Belt boinked Bochy’s wife or some such and Bochy found out about it, and has been publicly and privately kicking him in the nuts for it ever since…

I still can’t get over trying to catch the knife. Who the f does that? Eww, sharp knife dropping. Grab it!

I tend to agree with you on Belt getting yanked around but per Schulman’s article sitting Belt is more about pairing Petit with Sanchez. Bochy loves him some Sanchez. Why not put him at 3b?

I admit I’m slavishly relying on the park factors ranking at baseball-reference. It seems to indicate that PNC is right after ATT and Petco in terms of favoring the pitchers.

  46. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 7:43 pm

Why is Adrianza challenging a first to third close play and losing when there’s just one out with Belt coming up?…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 5, 2014 at 7:54 pm

Flannery waved him on. Kruk and Kuip totally put it all on Adrianza and let Flannery off the hook.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 5, 2014 at 8:13 pm

Yeah, on TV, they showed the angle from the thirdbase area, and Flannery can be seen clearly waving Adrianza on. But of course, Kruk and Kuip let Flannery off the hook. I’m not saying Adrianza doesn’t bear some responsibility, maybe he should have made it, for all I know; but still….Flannery bears some responsibility, too.

  47. sportdude's avatar sportdude said, on May 5, 2014 at 7:44 pm

FUCK! Pinch runner with such a short lead he can get back the bag standing……Listening on the computer…Miller ” if you are that close to the bag as a pinch runner you are probably to close”. Next pitch a hit and he is thrown out at 3rd. Morse could have done that…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 5, 2014 at 7:53 pm

But couldn’t the firstbase coach tell him to take a bigger lead? I don’t get what a firstbase coach does anyway. That’s another cushy job. Stand there and collect batting gloves and shinguards all game.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 7:52 pm

I don’t think these bench guys play enough to employ game smarts and baserunning skills. They rarely play, so they have no feel for the game…

  49. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 7:49 pm

I have real issues with Bochy and his choice and timing of putting in pinch runners for the big boppers. IMO you don’t do that at Coors late in a close game, or in a game like this where it is a slugfest. Especially removing Posey and Morse at the same time? Now, if we go extras, we got bupkus in for two sluggers that are relative hot. He could have taken out Posey with Belt coming up, but Morse, too, and Belt was not on deck, he was in the hole. Bochy does THIS, but rarely will send speed guys to steal second in the middle or early part of a tight game…

  50. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 5, 2014 at 8:09 pm

SF bench guys Adrianza and Arias distinguishing themselves for their ineptitude? Giants just cannot play small ball, moving runners along, etc. very well…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 5, 2014 at 8:16 pm

It’s such a terrible bench. Adrianza and Blanco can’t even hit major league pitching. Blanco used to be able to. And Arias seems to be flailing, too.
