Anyway, I think last night’s game could be classified as “fun to watch.” Any time you come back from an 8-2 deficit and then 9-8 and then 10-9 you can safely say your team is trying it’s best. And who knew that our very own NL wins leader knew how to bunt? How awesome is it that Machi didn’t get his first big league win till he was 31 and now he’s on pace for close to 30 this season? He’s 8-1 lifetime. I wrote a blog thread about his first win last year.

Gee, I was all set for a brilliant essay on one of the most exciting, improbable games in recent history. So many contributions from so many. Instead I’ll just say two names. Two who define why we love this game. A young man who graduated last night and an erstwhile journeyman who has become one of best relievers in the game.
Hector Sanchez and Jean Machi. Last night’s game was their game and that’s how I will remember it..

Just because I’m curious…..can anyone explain why we have played 32 games, Colorado 34 LA 33, and yet Detroit only 27 games? I looked and no one else (Yankees) have less than 31. I assume rainouts, but what an odd stat. Tough road for them not that I care…

Didn’t catch last night until 10th so I missed a lot of excitement, but I’m not bunting with Pence up and giving up an out with a RISP, especially with bench guys in there and regs no longers in LU. At one time I was excited about Perez, but he’s just too impatient at the plate. All he’s done is make the argument for Morse to go full 9.
Day ago fangraphs had column on projected and actual run differential and Pirates were near the bottom in runs scored. So last night they explode and still lose. They are 12-20, tied with Cubs for last in division at 9 and a half games behind, and only 2 teams in NL (DBacks and Cubs) have won fewer games.
I never thought Clint Hurdle was exactly a genius to start with, and the GM who thought bringing in Ike Davis was gonna solve 1b for them doesn’t seem to be helping much. Pirates were great story last year…but natives have to be getting restless at this point with how they’ve played.
If I remember right, Giants lost a game 17-16 early in a season to Padres and mgr. got fired right after that.

And I agree Sportsdude…that was a killer battle/strikeout by Casilla to extend the game. I think there were 9 or 10 pitches fouled-off in that AB.

Henry actually does a fairly good job at recounting how weird and wonderful that game was, in many ways. How they go from winning 3 in Atlanta hitting all those HRs and getting no hits with RISP, to winning a slugfest in Pittstown with no HRs and loads of hits with RISP… good to win in diverse ways, that’s the mark of a team that can get it done, whatever it takes. They are having fun. Hope they can maintain that and/or at least remember it when things slump a bit. This team wins when it has fun, and has fun when it wins.

Having Craw positioned behind second in the 11th to get the DP on Davis was huge. Especially following the ump getting his fat ass in the way of the play before. So I’m giving a shout out to Ron Wotus for that brilliant move.
Yeah I thought for sure that was a hit up the middle. Giants turned what 5 DPs? Hicks isn’t exactly textbook out there but he’s making plays when they need them.
Hope games settle down and PS can regain strength and get out of Pit relatively unscathed before 4 with LA…word today in Chron was Cain expected to make start Saturday.
Btw, caught our most hated rival Hanley in a couple stare downs with Marlin’s pitcher Jose Fernandez in Sunday game. Hanley gets an rbi base hit and then stares at him with smile from 1b. Later Fernandez strikes his ass out and gives it right back following him to bench.
James, saw that new CD Sonny Rollins Roadshows Vol. 3 to be released this week. Fortunate enough to catch both earlier ones (one of which featured Ornette Coleman) at a local lib for free. Dynamic live performances culled from around the world appearances. I’ll listen Live at Village Vanguard today at work (nice to be boss).
Perez has to be going back down soon. He has an option left. The guy can catch and throw the ball, but at the plate he’s pretty useless. Bring up somebody who can at least introduce the bat to the ball. This Tyler Colvin guy is in the rabble about being the next guy up — well, OK, let’s see…
Well, when you get opportunities as infrequetly as Perez, it is tough with that few ABs if you are slumping. Fuck, look at the comparison between Belt and Pablo. At least Belt has 8 bombs, and has overall, been more consistent, yet he sits more than Pablo who has…well, you know the rest.
With Perez being a 5th OFer, and him having above average D and a good arm, I am not tripping on that. I say leave the kid up. Colvin isn’t exactly sitting the world on fire in Fresno.
Chi, nobody’s setting Fresno on fire. But, this bench we have is pathetic. Perez is the guy with the short straw, an option. I don’t understand the Adrianza thing — he’s invisible, but they won’t send him down because he’s out of options. IMO, if a guy isn’t good enough to play, who cares if he gets claimed?…
Obviously, the Giants brain trust feels that Adrianza is worth keeping/protecting…even if he sucks right now. Otherwise, he would have been gone by now. I agree…no one is setting the world on fire in Fresno, and we are talking a 5th OFer here (Perez), so why screw around. I say leave the kid up, work with him, give him as many ABs as possible (in the confines of winning ball games and series) and let it ride. I just don’t like the jerking around of players…I think continuity is the key to getting someone to perform to that next level. I just don’t see where Colvin (insert name from the Griz here) makes that much of a difference…and especially when you are talking bench players. Hell, I would go one more and say why is Arias still around. He is pathetic most of the time, but he is versatile and plays many positions (as does Perez…he can play all 3 OF positions).

The longer Panda hits like Juan Perez, the more attractive the Buster to third narrative is to me as a long term answer. With Hector looking like he may, may be a real catching choice down the road, and Susac below as a real backup choice or a competitor with Hector for the starter as C, a Panda-less Giants looks very doable. After all, the team has essentially been Panda-less for 5 weeks now, and they’re doing well…
Susac is hurt, again. Don’t know the details off the top of my head, but a friend at the pub told me last night that he was on the DL again (seems he has a propensity for injuries)….
Hope like hell that Hudson can go deep today to give the bullpen a spell. Complete game could not be more made to order today.

That is crazy bad. Maybe Panda is hungry. Maybe he’s pressing because of the contract. I don’t really care about why, but you can’t be a top performer in the league and get paid like it when you provide 5 weeks of dreck like this at the plate. The thing is, he’s cratered but isn’t changing anything. Still swinging at first pitches (last night) and otherwise rockin’ that “aggressive” approach, aka totally swinging at everything and leading the team in DPs. 5 weeks into a funk, I’d be tying my arms together for the first two pitches of the AB and make the pitchers throw me a strike. I’d take David Bell in 2002 right now over Panda and be very happy at third for the entire season…

WillieD, Pittsburgh’s record is just another case of things evening out, not Hurdle’s stupidity. They were 6 games better than the run differential last year, like the Giants in 2012.
I will definitely check out the Rollins stuff. Been going through Gary Giddin’s book “Jazz” — he really is the best — which dissects tunes from throughout the music’s history in excellent lay-technical descriptions. I’ve been stuck on Jimmy Smith’s “Organ Grinder’s Swing” — dig that title.
My local independent bookstore also called me yesterday to let me know my special ordered copy of “34-Ton Bat” had arrived.

All right, the data made me write the following, not the guy who was screaming at the TV last night . . . Hector has struck out in 36% of his plate appearances. See also my post yesterday about the inordinate number of runners that have been on base in his 50 PAs. With his “hot streak,” he has brought his OPS up to his career numbers.
It may be time to change his batting grip to take him to the next level. Fortunately, he has a beyond reproach approach at the plate, having walked once this year — nothing for the professional hacking advisors on staff to fix there.
Well, Sanchez is seeing 4.17 pitcher per plate appearances thus far compared to 3.75 last year. Not sure if that is really significant but from the naked eye test, he seems to be taking better ABs.
Hector’s pretty much a hacker. Unlike Panda, he connects once in a while. Bochy loves hackers. Except now that he’s converted Belt into one with the bad OBP to prove it, for some reason even with the 8 HRs Bochy doesn’t like Belt hacking…
I wasn’t impressed with Machi last year. It seemed like every time he came in the inherited runners scored. He’s been awesome this year though as his numbers prove.
Dirt, when Zumie brought this up earlier, I noted that his % of inherited runners scored was a little above average. It’s not really a skill. Over time, you either pitch well or you don’t. Machi was very good last year.

I agree with James…he was good last year. Cannot find details on inherited runners scoring, but the dude pitched in 51 innings and had a 2.38 ERA/1.094 WHIP. His K/BB ratio was 4.24/1. My recollection was he was pretty damned good, and I was happy as hell when he made the club this year.

Good to see. Maybe we’ll see him called up. Personally, I’m not really sold on Hicks.
He’s great when he hits it out, like Uggla, and his SLG is a real plus at .455 for a second sacker. And his OBP is pretty decent at .330. But, the BA at .208 is hard to stomach, he’s a sucker for the curve ball. His D has improved, that’s a plus. They don’t have any better unless/until Panik pushes him. Next Spring, Panik needs to make a move, he’ll have had 3 full years in the 3 levels of the minors. I’m assuming Scuts is done…
I’m fine with Hicks. Of course, after I look at Pablo’s slash line it’s easy to be fine with everyone else.
The BA is concerning but for me it’s the D with Hicks. He had a rough night last night so I don’t think it is fair to judge those balls that Machi clipped but I’m still holding my breath when the ball comes his way.
If Hicks can put up a 784 OPS for the season, bottom line is he’ll have produced more runs than Scutaro did last year.
Won’t happen (Panik coming up) before rosters expand, unless Hicks tanks in all the categories mentioned. I think Hicks is doing just fine…no reason to make any changes there, for now, IMO.
fun Fact Flem mentioned on Sunday-no pitcher on the Mets staff has gotten a hit ALL SEASON. Dont know if that is still the case, but that blew me away. Its been 5 weeks!
I dnt remember that 17-16 loss to Pads, but loved checking out the boxscore. We had Marichal going, they had Clay Kirby–their top starter in those days. dave Campbell, one of my favorite broadcasters, took an 0 for 7 leading off.

Some kinda wonderful, the no quit attitude of this team. Not so long ago down by 8-2 early in the contest and there are recent Giants squads which would simply have played it out, looking forward to the postgame spread.
When you’re hot you’re hot. This streak will not go on and on. Such things rarely do ~ maybe with the LaBumbos run last summer after Puig joined them and then Hanley heated up. One thing is abundantly clear, though. This edition of the Gigantes will not simply roll over and collapse when adversity hits them. I do like the way that one player after another picks up the hero mantle. Last night as T.F. so notably mentioned, it was Hector and Machi Man. Sunday it happened to be Bumgarner and CrawDaddy. This team is not overly reliant on one super-star or two who can go into slumps and the whole outfit goes on the fritz.
Something that would rarely get mentioned in a victory is that Bochy outmanaged himself last night. You may recall the inning where he pinch-ran for both Buster and Morse, burning both of them as well as Adrianza. And as the game went into extra-extras, Bruce was obliged to use his elite pinch-hitter, Mad Bum. I’d still like to see 27-man rosters with the AL congruently dropping their ridiculous Dink Hitter dimension as the quid pro quo from the Players Union.
Oh, it got mentioned last night! Not Pedro Feliz catching bad but it was getting there. I was almost fine with blowing their wad in the 9th but they didn’t even run with the PRs they put in. That was my beef. Why put the fast guys on base and NOT send them? They finally did a hat-and-run with Crawfish, but Arias swung, missed, and he was thrown out easily.
My point was, straight steal with the PRs. Otherwise, why take out Morse and then Posey if you ain’t running?
Yeah, the Bochy management screw up there was mentioned, big time. As well as why have Machi “steal” second with Belt at the plate and a guy on third, so the Bucs just walked him and got to Hicks hitting .208 (he struck out, ending the inning). Plus, why risk Machi pulling a hammy or a quad stealing second?…
There was another funny part to that Pedro Feliz playing catcher bit. I think Randy Winn may have played 3B or something like that.

Giants are playing outstanding baseball right now. From the comments last night, I know I am in the minority here, but I like how Bochy is managing the team. I have zero complaints, especially when my team is playing .650 winning baseball. If he wants to sit Belt, so be it. Go check around the league – ALL managers use this tool once in awhile. In my opinion, It’s ridiculous to think he has something against Belt or any player that he sits. Some of you guys keep pushing this “conspiracy theory” and I say bullshit. I can name a dozen players this season that are struggling and have been given a day off to reflect and get their head together. The remedy? Start hitting.
Also, I was upset about him sitting Posey and Morse last night, after they had 3 and 2 hits, respectively . . . However, my reasons were personal (I had both of them in 2 of my Fan Duel money tournaments and it reduced the money I won in both). Big deal. The Giants always trump my gambling and FL play. My understanding is that Bochy had valid reasons (which I wont cite here) for sitting both of them late in the game.
Unrelated to baseball, Jim Brown discussed TD celebrations at a recent NFL FanFest and was able to articulate something which has always bothered me for many years, but I was unable to put into words coherently as he has. To wit:

In general, I really don’t give a damn about how Bochy or anyone else manages. It’s not particularly relevant to how many W’s a team piles up.
Pulling for a particular player has always been part of being a fan, more so than admiring a fucking manager. Bochy has singled Belt out for treatment other regulars have not been subject to when they struggle. That’s what’s bullshit.

Blade, I’ve heard Bochy rip on Belt on his radio show, in an offhanded but still very clear way — about his swing, his approach, almost as if Belt had personally disappointed Bochy for some unspoken reason. I’ve never heard him do that on anybody else while with the Giants. The Gamer sucked for a season at a time, nary a similar, direct word of criticism by Bochy in public like that…

Timmy, Huff, Freddy Sanchez and Pablo have probably had as much, if not more shite talked about them in the press as Belt. I agree with unca that Pablo has probably had the most. I don’t agree with airing out team issues with the press, but it seems it has been this management style for some time now. It seems to me that Belt’s issues have been mainly about his reluctance to take the coaches advise (which he has admitted). Now other players it has seemed to be about something of a personal nature like Timmy and Pablo’s conditioning, Huffs mental breakdown, or Sanchez because they didn’t think the guy was hurt. Like I said, I don’t agree with this approach and said so years ago, but I don’t think they’ve singled out Belt and Belt only.

Like him or not Jackson certainly seems to rub a lot of people the wrong way and that is on him.
Jackson may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but dammit, the players love playing for him. Someone mentioned getting a good x/o’s guy to help him…I thought that was a good idea.

Good post Blade, The only reason Bochy is not benching Sandoval is there is absolutely no one to replace him. Bochy has multiple options at first base. So I don’t believe that Bochy has anything against Belt either. Some fan on a phone call to KNBR brought up a good point, Winning has kept Sandoval’s slump out of the headlines. If the Giants had an 11-22 record how much blame would be dumped on Pablo. Fair or not he would be taking a lot of flak for not producing. And if the Giants did have a losing record, what would Bochy, Sabe, et al be doing about it??
I think, like you say, that having no other alternative is the most likely reason. Also, Sandoval is an established vet at this point and Bochy is going to give him plenty of rope.
But if the Giants had that losing record what would they be doing? Granted it is only the first week of May, but Bochy has sat Belt.
I think he probably would still get run out there. What’s the alternative, Arias? Maybe bring up Abreu? I heard that same call and agree that the club winning is certainly providing Sandoval some cover. He’s too good to stay down but he’s approaching if not over 100PA now so who knows if he pulls it together?
Based on his baseball card, Panda should figure this out and start hitting. But, he’s busy keeping his body in shape, and has this contract thing over his head. Those are two factors that have to be impacting his performance somehow. The point being, and nobody wants to discuss much, is that maybe Pablo is a bit of head case. Not in a cancer in the clubhouse way. In a losing focus kind of way. He’s what, 28? Maybe its not as easy anymore squaring up 59 foot sliders like he used to do in 2009, and that’s getting to him. Maybe he can’t adjust at all to being even the slightest bit more selective (though he’s got a decent number of walks) when he takes swings. He just needs to come out of this, and soon…
Panda plays because there’s nobody else at third, whether they win or lose. At least, nobody else right now. Who would they put in there — Arias? There’s nobody in the minors, either, unless we consider Minicozzi is a player…
Three coaches won over 50 games last season in the NBA. Vinnie del Negro (Clips), George Karl (Nuggets), and Lionel Hollins (Memphis). All that got them was fired. The Clips and Memphis were back in the playoffs again this season, the Nuggets basically dismantled the team and are rebuilding. I’m not worried much about the Dubs cratering because Mark Jackson isn’t on the bench anymore. They might win more. Somebody else might have been able to figure out how to get Curry free to shoot against the Clips — he was basically locked down the entire series, and the Dubs couldn’t figure out how to get him loose…
The operative word is they “might” win more under a new coach. And they might be better offensively and defensively. I just have a problem with canning a dude that came in and within three years takes the team to 50 wins for the first time in a really long time.
I hope like hell they get someone good, and the results are an improvement. I am not entirely confident that will be the case. Time will tell…but on the surface, I think this move (firing Jackson) sucks.
It was ironic that after Snarkk posted that brilliantly scathing critique of the umpires yesterday, an ump commits a huge gaffe that could have cost the Giants the game. He made a lousy effort at staying out of the way of the play.
After the ump got drilled by the ball, Kruk and Kuip eventually went into a darkly funny riff about umps they wished they would have hit with the ball while they were still playing.
Yeah, I don’t know. The talk is Steve Kerr. Yippee. Another untested head coach. Jackson reminded me a lot of Aluminum Mike Singletary. Except Jackson won. His strategy wasn’t always the best, but they played all-out for him. And the defense improved by about 150% under him. The team HAS talent, but they sure didn’t know how to play defense before Jackson came along.
I don;t know. I have a fear this will bite them squarely in the ass. Curry is going to be pissed. but that’s b-ball.
It’s all on Lacob. You fire a winner, you better hire a winner. He got rid of Monta, got booed for it, but that turned out OK, so we’ll see. Thing is, in the NBA, HCs are close to a dime a dozen. With 5 men on the court at a time, if you have players, you win. If you don’t, you won’t. The Dubs now have some players the past few years. If Phil Jackson had coached the Clips in the 90s and not the Bulls with Jordan and Pippen, or later the Lakers with Kobe and Shaq, would his Zen crap have made any difference to the Clips? Don’t think so. Is Spoelstra a coaching genius, or does Lebron have more than a lot to do with it? Something(s) between Jackson and Lacob/management were obviously uncool, stuff we’ll probably hear about in the coming weeks…
As stated earlier, I agree with you, Charlie (that this could blow up on them). I hope not…hope they excel even moreso than they did under Jackson, but on the surface…I think it was a bad move.

I won’t miss Jackson at all. Thought success was more the work of the FO. Their can be problems when you have players liking a coach too much as opposed to fearing him…ie players can get lax and sloppy. Think of all those turnovers

Jackson is an abrasive guy. I don’t have a problem with that type of personality but apparently Lacob did. Stonewalling the owner’s son and alienating The Logo aren’t going to get you very far with any front office. It’s almost like Jackson wanted out.
I think Lacob really relies on West to give him the bottom line thinking on things. West was supposedly the guy that said pull the trigger on Klay’s draft pick. If Jackson crossed West, that was probably the coup de grace more than dissing Lacob’s kid. You don’t F with the Logo and his 50 years of NBA excellence, that’s a no win move…

If anything, Jackson brought defensive toughness. Something the team was severely lacking before he got here.
I just noticed Bill Henry passed away a few weeks ago. The geysers here might remember his ’60’s stint as a Giant reliever late in his career. In Ball Four, Bouton credits him for retiring during the Pilots ’69 Spring Training when he felt he was washed up, rather than stand in the way of a kid trying to make it.

Morton is just not a very good pitcher. He’s ok. At best. I’m assuming this low scoring game is a result of what happened yesterday. Almost always, it seems, that after 2 teams go off with 30+ hits they lay an egg the next day. Worn out? Who knows. But the Giants should hammer Morton the way most teams do.
A little disappointed with the Jackson firing but not freaking out about it. The only way this turns bad is if they hire someone who comes in and fucks everything to hell. It still comes down to the players, it always does. Will they find the next “Phil Jackson”? Probably not. But I think they shouldn’t have any trouble finding the next “Mark Jackson.” And if that guy isn’t as abrasive as his predecessor and he doesn’t fire all his coaches that’s just one less headache the owner has to deal with.
The next coach will have a lot of pressure on him. But, that’s a lot of the job, anyway, dealing with all the pressure of expectations. I don’t know how the Dallas Cowboy coach can even function with Jerry Jones all up in his grill all the time.

Flem and Miller had some dialogue about that as well. Miller I think suggested Buster could have blocked the plate a bit more, while Flem claimed there was almost no time as he had to concentrate on making the catch. I prefer casting Adrianza as the bad guy, putting him on a bus bound for 99 South and getting Tyler Colvin up here as you suggested earlier.

The Mark Jackson firing really is eating at me. Owners and GMs who think they are more important than the coach and players is doomed to failure. Giants let Bochy alone and he took them to two championships. Eddie D let Bill Walsh have full control and we got glory for a decade. Now we have an ahole owner who sticks his son into management and tries to throw his dick around. F the Lacobs.
This is as if Don Nelson has now become the Warriors owner. I have watched a ton of Warrior games over the last 6-7 years and I was a critic when Mark Jackson got hired because I thought his east coast philosophy and defense first approach would not blend with west coast basketball, the conference and the personnel they had.
But Mark Jackson made me a believer. He is a modern-day sports version of Patton and his troops were ready to jump off cliffs for him. This entire thing is a power play by Bob Myers who was never a GM before and Lacob as a meddling Mark Cubanesque owner. They are going to flush the immediate chances for success for this roster making a championship run in the near-term right down the toilet.
This stinks and reminds me of the brewing discontent growing behind the scenes between the Yorks, the Niners GM and Harbaugh.
I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Until it’s a big deal. If the next guy implodes the team, let’s say Carlissimo for reference, then yes I agree with you. But are you telling me that Steve Kerr is gonna to violently turn the ear of Curry and the gang? I don’t believe it will. Or whoever they hire. Jackson was a great rah rah guy and I know that’s a big piece when it comes to coaching NBA players. But it’s not the only piece and there are lots of guys who rah rah shit to critical acclaim.

Honestly, I’d love to them shitcan the Baby Giraffe nickname and I bet Belt would love if it went away as well. To me, its another example of Belt getting treated like crap a good chunk of the time by the organization. What kind of a weird-ass nickname is that? Probably hung on him by the Kruk/Kuip knucklehead brothers.
It needs to be systematically phased out, kind of like how John Cougar went to John Cougar Mellencamp to John Mellencamp. Nobody even remembers his as John Cougar anymore. BTW, I’m not a huge Mellencamp guy, but I did see him put on a helluva show at some classic joint in Boston one time.

I’d love to weigh in on the Mark Jackson talk, but I pay no attention to the Warriors. I am a Sacramento Kings fan and I have zero affection for the GSW. I will say I loved Jackson when he played at St. John’s and I won some respect from my hoop buddies way back in the day by being the only guy who predicted he’d be a solid pro. I didn’t think he’d take the league by storm and win Rookie of the Year like he did, but I thought he’d be a good get for any team.
