A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

So how important is this 3 games series? To us? To them? They re-arranged their rotation for this series and frankly, I think that was a great move. I’m glad we have Timmy going tonight, he’s been so good at home. But Voggy and Petit following him? Not much we could have done about Petit but I really wish Bum or Huddy were going this weekend….

So how many games do you think we HAVE to win, considering the opponent, the current NL West standings and the fact that this is at home? I’m assuming we all agree zero would be a disaster and no one in their right mind should think we have to sweep the Dodgers this weekend…..

Go Timmeh!!! One game at a time. Huge need to rise to the occasion with all the injuries and such.

  2. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on July 25, 2014 at 9:55 am

They don’t HAVE to win any. But it’s a chance to make a statement and really demoralize LA – especially if they could somehow knock off Ker-fax…

  3. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on July 25, 2014 at 10:05 am

Sure wish we were facing Haren and Beckett, then a sweep could have be possible!
But with only Timmy, the bullets aren’t loaded.Petit sucks, and Voggy blown up last start (11hits in 3?) doesn’t bode well in this series!
    Having said that Fuck LA!!!

Petit sucks? I beg to differ. He has contributed as much, if not more, than Cainer this year. He is a valued commodity in my book (can do long relief or spot starts). His line this year is he has been in 27 games with 6 starts. His ERA is 4.24 and WHIP comes in at 1.206 (respectable). Given where our boys are in the grand scheme of things, I do beg to differ on him “sucking.” If the offense can support him, he has a chance on hanging a loss on the bumbinos.

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 25, 2014 at 10:32 am

Also, in his home/away splits, Vogey has a 3.04 ERA and 1.074 WHIP. He has gone 68 innings in 11 starts (6.1 IP/start). Sure, you want better from your staff, but for the 4 and 5 guys in your rotation, this isn’t too shabby. Same comment I made about Petit above. If the team gives him some decent run support, then they can hang a loss on the bums.

Seeing how LA’s struggled out of the break, I think it was a stupid move on LAs part as their shitty pitchers end up with more starts than their good ones.

Donnie 2x is putting all the pressure on his players by playing along with the notion that we are in their heads.

    Perfect.

In the grand scheme anything but a sweep by them would be fine. I’d love to see us do it, but their pitching is crazy good. I think we take 2.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 25, 2014 at 10:14 am

Vogie didn’t pitch spectacularly last time out, but he’s been rewarded with 0 runs in his previous 3 starts. I think he gets some runs and does fine. With help from the pen.

Plus Crawfish did him Vogie no favors by blowing an easy DP that turned into a big inning his last game.

Agree Charlie. See my comments above (in reply to Kat). No offense Kat, but I don’t totally agree with your synopsis of either Petit or Vogelsong.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 25, 2014 at 10:37 am

Yeah, DJ. If the Giants take 2, then Donnie’s strategy backfired badly. Setting up your rotation for the rest of the season based on one series could really bite them in the ass.

    Let’s hope so.

    • stickman's avatar stickman said, on July 25, 2014 at 12:00 pm

Even if SF only cops one with Donnie putting his top three threat in position, Giants still lead by half a game and for the LaBumbos its Kiss your sisterville ~ considering their pitching setup for the rest of the season. Mattingly is gambling heavily that the Bums can sweep three in SF. His only hope is that the Giants lineup is so hobbled by injuries that they might not drive in that key run in the closest contest. Any other scenario and he loses the bet.

  8. Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 25, 2014 at 10:37 am

And you didn’t put a 0 on the poll, either. I don’t think they HAVE TO win any of the games. We’ll have six more with these bums in September (three home and three in la la land). So, I don’t think any of the games are a “must win” as there is too much ball left to play, and the trade deadline has yet to come and pass. Still a chance for the G-men to shore up the line-up and again…lots of ball to play.

From a morale standpoint…yes, it would be great to win the series. To get swept could be a real morale hit, but it would not be the end of the world.

I am predicting our boys take 2 of 3, but none are must wins, IMO.

I don’t think arranging or rearranging the sequence of your starting pitchers in July mean that much…They can be rearranged time and time again with off days and such…

Was reading the comments yesterday regarding trade talk. It should just go to show anything reporters report should be taken lightly…like Theo not responding to Sabes when he inquired about Samardjia for prospects. He isn’t in the same league as Price but the GM of the the Rays is listening or engaged with Sabes…Come on.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 25, 2014 at 12:03 pm

I beg to differ. A little. Haren already has 2 losses coming out of the AS break and the shift pretty much guarantees less starts for Kershaw and Ryu. 2 games may not matter, but then again . . .

      • wswins's avatar wswins said, on July 25, 2014 at 12:44 pm

  12. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 25, 2014 at 11:50 am

I agree with Loo that it wouldn’t be a disaster to lose all 3. No doubt, it would be nice to make a statement. However, any of you long time Giants fans have to remember that there were some Dodgers and a lot of Dodger fans that discounted the so-called “rivalry” between us and them. This was the period when they won their last World Series and seemed to always be in the playoffs. Meanwhile we were floundering. In short, they humiliated us by pretending we weren’t even there.

Consequently, I don’t give the Dodgers much thought. Hey, I know they are there, but they are fuckwads until they win a World Series in this century. 🙂

      • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 25, 2014 at 2:51 pm

Exactly, Charlie. You cannot tell me that a guy like Zobrist isn’t worth adding. Way things are going (Rays making a run) Price and Zobrist may not be available. But the point is there IS talent that could help this club. The asking price for most is probably prohibitive as the Giants have few trading pieces of any magnitude, and cannot add a ton of salary (unless Big Daddy Charles Johnson convinces the ownership group to loosen the purse strings).

  14. Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 25, 2014 at 2:31 pm

We were all having some fun with Ryan Howard’s ineptitude at the plate (and the subsequent booing by Phillie fans) during our series in Philly.

I had to laugh when I read this in an article re: trades:

“The Phillies have offered Ryan Howard to any American League club they think could theoretically use him and received no takers. GM Ruben Amaro has even offered to pay the vast majority of Howard’s deal while asking for little in return, but to no avail.” Even offering to pay a big chunk of that “dead” salary and stilll no takers. Howard is so done.

Well, if they don’t get any takers this year, they may just do that. Perhaps they try to buy him out to lessen their financial obligation. Talking about a team that is fucked (aging players with bloated salaries).

  15. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on July 25, 2014 at 2:51 pm

Sabean generally does at least 2 things very well: 1) manages significant, make-a-difference trades/pick-ups at the end of July and even in August very very well (unless he’s already written off the season as a bad-penny year, which he hasn’t this year); and 2) shovels meaningless crap to the media for them to report *something* about nothing. Maybe it’s just his way of lowering everyone’s expectations. There is no way Sabean believes there’s nobody worth getting, because clearly there are players worth getting, and there also can be no way he believes the team does not need to be improved in light of the injuries to Pagan, Cain, Belt, and the flavor of the day at 2B. Without those troubling injuries, right, he could likely stand pat, he put together a very good team. No way he stands pat the rest of the way this year. I’m looking forward to seeing what he does. (If he does nothing, I will be extremely surprised and disappointed.)

If Uggla has a great game, it complicates matters, like finding that some uggly chick is a great kisser but you really don’t want to go to 2nd base or third or home with her. Sure, I wouldn’t mind if Ugggly bradpennyizes the Dodgers tonight but UGGLA IS NOT THE ANSWER. He’s not even the question. (Come to think of it, Brad Penny was pitching great for us until the Dogs destroyed him.) Off to see the SyrChiefs tonight.

Pawlie: Same line of thinking occurred to me. Just suppose the dude somehow runs into one tonight with a teammate or two aboard. Maybe Greinke would be ordered to groove one just to stick us with his presence for weeks on end ~ beyond the Deadline, of course. Then if the LaBumbos STILL happen to be behind SF in the standings they could Cody any waiver deals.

Not wishing the dude bad. Heck, i even have a dollop of Swede in me and always love comeback stories. Nevertheless this is a desperation move with all the injuries at that position. Abreu may have been a better move. We’ll see.

Winning Uggla? Good luck with that one.

Just got an email from our SFGiants offering to sell me seats from Candlestick, (a pair for $749), even autographed (more, I’m sure). Tacky. Oh, it’d be cool, I guess. But it strikes me as tacky, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s just me. Everything has a price. Even my virtue.

    • SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on July 25, 2014 at 4:21 pm

Several teams have done that deal. The Dodgers sold seats they tore out for their remodel and we did it down here in San Dawg when they encircled Jack Murphy/Qualcomm Stadium. I don’t mind the Giants following suit, but I do have a problem with the price. $749 a pair? And that is the base model? $149 a pair and I’m whipping out my credit card.

As for tonight, in the grand scheme this series is 3 of 162, but for us fans these are special games. As for Uggla, I’m glad we’re taking a flyer on him and I’m glad he’s in the line-up. If his problem is a mental/confidence thing, a change of scenery and magic tough of Bochy could be just what he needs. And is ceiling is a helluva lot higher than anyone else we are trotting out there. Then again, I said the same thing about Francoeur…..

  29. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on July 25, 2014 at 4:16 pm

I’m kinda feeling that with the somewhat urgent need for a good starting pitcher and OFer now surpassing the previous perceived urgent need for a 2Bman, I’d love to see Uggly “complicate” things. Why not? At this point, I’m ready to see Uggla and Abreu over Adrianza and Scoots. Scoots is done and Adrianza has never really materialized (anyone here really want to see more of Adrianza starting at 2B and hitting 2nd?)….. Oh, and, did I really read something very recently that Penny is in the bigs again? San Diego, was it? Oh, and, Steve… good call on LA next year, love it…. The only thing that could prevent that from happening is their starting rotation still being somewhat stellar.

WillieD…Agree that Timmy is hard to ketch and all, but I’m not thrilled how the trainers and Bochy just rolled with it as of course Sanchez was selling them he was Ok. I could see on TV he was wobbly and seeing stars ,yet they let him finish the inning and gave an AB as well? Just fucking dumb, like what happened to Belt

The one thing that is totally fucked-up with this team is that Blanco has to start. He is fine as a 4/5 guy with an “OCCASIONAL” start, but NO WAY IN HELL he belongs in the starting line-up.

Don’t worry, a new OFer will arrive shortly. 🙂

  49. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:26 pm

And sorry…personal receiver for Timmy or not, Sanchez just doesn’t cut it as a backup C. My prediction is Susac is the backup backstop next year (unless he is part of a trade package).

  50. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:30 pm

Fuck. I’d rather see Susac now.

Not sure who else made a comment on Uggly rocking the 22, but NO WAY IN HELL he should be wearing that number. Is Murph losing it My understanding is he is the man that controls the # assignment. Retire 22, already

I hope Uggly is the second coming of Burrell, Ross, etc., but no way in hell should he be sporting the 22.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:41 pm

Yeah I mentioned it earlier Chi, it’s just a disservice to the Thrill, and he has to watch his own number look like a pile of dogshit that will never get clean in the laundry..

  53. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:32 pm

Yeah, that’s pretty fucked up. Too many guys have worn that 22 after Will. Come on Crawfish.

Remarkable effort my ass for HanRam. Fuck him and the rest of the bums. Make it hurt, Gs!

  63. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:37 pm

Agree AK regarding your 8:29pm post . . . I felt bad for Sanchez. He really got his bell rung and it was unconscionable that he remained in the game.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:38 pm

      He sucks this year….

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:41 pm

That’s not the point. Similar to Belt, Sanchez didn’t receive competent medical (concussion) evaluation in my opinion. Shit, the only thing that kept him up was the umpire grabbing him.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:46 pm

Agree, Steve. Giants medicos just suck ass…

  64. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:39 pm

Multiple chances to make Greinke pay, and the Giants can’t get the key knock.

  65. stickman's avatar stickman said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:45 pm

Uggla not up to his first good shot. Wishing him well there. Knew such a situation would come up. I mean it is baseball. Pitch count even at 67 through four with Timmy throwing five fewer balls and Greinke one BB. Anybody got a line on how deep their guy can go. We know Timmy, if on, can be good for 120 or so if not in hot, muggy conditions.

  66. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 25, 2014 at 8:45 pm

Well, that looks like it may be more than enough for Grienke. Shit, we may get swept.
