A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Tired

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 16, 2014

Question: Last night’s loss was as galling as it was frustrating. But was it worse for you because of the galling and frustrating last 2+ months? For me, I think it was. I am tired of Bruce Bochy saying the same thing over and over, just using different words, in his post game conferences. I am tired of the Giants losing at home. I am tired of the offense doing next to nothing every night. I am tired of stupid base running mistakes from Gregor Blanco. And I am tired of Tim Flannery never getting any criticism for making bad decisions.

So yes, last night sucked. Maybe a little bit more than a random August loss normally does….

I kind of like the way Bochy handles the post game pressers but yeah the losing sucks balls. I’m most bummed for Belt. It’s looking more and more like he’s done.

Lot of blame to go around, and it’s easy to be negative. The pen combined to give up 3 hits 3 walks one HBP and a wild pitch that wound up costing 4 runs in 3 innings after Bum left. Marlon Byrd hurt SF with a HR and his defense, and the kid Asche hit 2 bombs, one off Affeldt one off Casilla. Not a guy that should be the difference.
Pagan made a dumb baserunning move too, just like Rollins did. No one beside the embattled Morse drove in a run, and Giants never scored after his 3 run bomb.
This is the White Sox and Phils that SF has lost 2 of 3 to, at home. Not good.

Kuip was on KNBR with Tolbert and Ratto before the game, and while a lot of that was just f-ing around and really funny, at one point Tolbert asked him for an explanation about Giants stumbles of late at home. Kuip said he couldn’t believe Giants collectively, as a team, had played as bad as they have. Individually, sure guys go into and out of slumps, but for a team that has been so good at home for last few years, it’s unfathomable.

And I really do believe guys are playing for their jobs in these last 6 weeks…or out of them.

Props to SanD for columns on D’Acquisto/Bonds/Dietz, bright spot yesterday.

Just took a look at the Wild Card standings. Amazing that we are only a half game out. Maybe even more amazing is that the Pads and Mets are both well under .500 but are 6.5 out—which ain’t that far back.

Glad you and others liked those articles Willie. I always appreciate it when I throw you a nice dime and you give me a little point after taking it to the rack. I try to instill that in my JV players. Let the guy know he put you in a nice position to score. Then he’s more likely to look for you again. Then other guys start getting more aware of making good passes.

Sounded like Flan sending Pablo last night was pretty loco, but by and large I’m all for sending guys when in doubt. Kuiper said on the radio he was out by 35 feet. Please tell me he was exaggerating.

Like Carty’s 366, Dietz’s 300 is a BA that’s stuck with me. While a general case of blackballing seems a little far-fetched, using his crappy D as en excuse to dump a good player not in favor with management sounds on the mark.

  6. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on August 16, 2014 at 9:30 am

Yes, Craig, a bit tired of all of those things… but last night, it was something that broke down that has been pretty steady the last few years: Affeldt and Lopez (and any other lefty) have countered Philly’s lefty-heavy lineup very well, ever since 2010. If that had continued, G’s would’ve won. On any given night……

Still, in all, I’m feeling hopeful they’re sensing the urgency and maybe can handle targeting a wildcard spot at this point. And yes, SanDawg, Pablo was out by an awful lot. When that ball was smoked to RF, I immediately muttered, ok, not sending Sandoval, but lo and behold. Big goof by Flannery that may have cost the game as much as all of the other boo boos we can count from last night……

  8. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on August 16, 2014 at 1:47 pm

Yeah, Dirt, that was pretty bad but unfortunately common, so it seems. Hello… do they go up there thinking, “I’m gonna hit a HR”…. instead of thinking about just doing the minimum of what needs to be done? Like, a ground ball to the right side… a sac fly…. Anyone know the status of Bam Bam’s contract? I say, if his contract finishes this year, fine, let him walk, and pay Scutaro what he is owed next year as a hitting coach, since he likely won’t be playing. He just always seemed to be aware of what needed to be done at the plate. These guys don’t seem to be able to just “do their jobs” at any given at-bat….

Always loved Ishi’s defense. Not much offense coming from him anymore. In Belt’s (prolonged) absence, would still rather see a decent hitting OFer (ala Byrd) added to play left and let Morse play 1st, since he seems to hit better when he plays there.. maybe.. a little… grasping at straws here… 🙂

I hear ya. Sabean’s lack of urgency is frustrating. Sabean or Bochy (I can’t remember which) said the Giants can’t rely on the other Wild Card contenders to keep struggling. But that’s EXACTLY what the Giants organization is doing.
In the book of the 2014 Giants, the Dan Uggla chapter should be called “The Fans Get Told To Close Their Eyes And Think Of England.”

Ok, watching this fucking futility, it’s an inopportune post, but I can’t help myself . . . .

SF does indeed suck in those <2 out situational ABs in 2014. How do they compare? They advance the runner 45% of their PAs, with a league avg standing at 50%. They'd have 12 more runs scored on the season if they were at league avg.

However, they have been way above league avg with runners on 3rd with 2 outs.

In other words, there really is no situational hitting issue here. The real problem, as usual, when a team is not scoring enough, is the lack of OBP and/or SP, also known as . . . .

The long anticipated evening out of Hudson's stats. Bummer.

Here’s another thought: Can Bumgarner play LF? Now and then? Like, when he’s due to just do his light throwing between starts? Guy can hit better than most of the OFers on the roster…. I know, too much risk of injury. Desperate times call for desperate measures. This team needs a psychological work-up, top to bottom, on why last year and this year they just…. stopped…. hitting and winning in June and July and now beyond…. Not their year, huh, Craig. The homer last night was Morse’s first since July 29 and third since June 5. He probably has another power surge left in him this season, but next year – I suggest the Giants move on and get a real power hitter that can half-assed field his position.

Quirky move by Donnie 2x; letting Kershaw hit in the 7th, down 3-1. Has 2x lost a little faith in his bullpen lately? The standard move would be to pinch-hit, and save your starter’s arm for the next start.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 16, 2014 at 10:20 pm

What was the pitch count? Seven innings is a walk in the park for Kershaw. And the dude can swing a bat. Hard to tell without knowing the situation. There have been times when Bochy let Bumgarner hit for himself in similar situations.

If there is a posting Hall-of-Fame, I nominate that one.

I was listening to the game when it was a mess. Kuip was killing time by talking about opening day line-ups from over the years. First it was the World Series years, then he was just throwing out line-ups and leadoff hitters from all over the place—Harvey Keunn to Tyoshi Shinjo. (Took a guess on his first name)
I was bound and determined to drag my 16 year old out to the backyard for some yardwork and I got his ass moving just as we got a couple of runners on and things were starting to look up a bit. Totally missed the rally, but what a great feeling to come back later and see they pulled it out.

“Yard work! My favorite thing!” said no 16 year old ever.
      🙂

Yeah, I had bailed for a bit, but came back 5-2 with a couple on base, no outs. It was a sweet rally. We haven’t seen anything like that from this team in a long time. Shinjo…ouch.

Chris Davis with a beautiful catch to rob Gordon. Keep that pesky guy off the bases.

Kershaw out there for the 9th, down 3-1. Yeah, his pitch count is kind of low, but still, I think it’s an odd move.

Are we suspicious of Kemp’s renaissance? Career going down the toilet, and then suddenly boom! Raking the ball.
    It’s a trend: Uribe, Gordon, Kemp….
    Just sayin.’ Just sayin’….

Dodgers lose. As someone mentioned, the Dodgers have let the Giants hang around. Giants down just 3 in the loss column.

And Kershaw takes the loss. Maybe there is hope after all.

1 game playoff: Bumgarner or Hudson, assuming there’s even an option?

Bumgarner vs. Carpenter would be my bet.

Cards lose to the Pads. And A’s are now percentage points behind out of first. A fine day all around.

Watched the game at my sister’s house. She made some weird Czech chicken dish that was freaking delicious and at one point her cat snuck up behind me while I was sitting on the couch and started grooming my semi-bald head. I swear, that cat was licking the back of my head for about 10 minutes. It was hilarious. It was strange. But it was hilarious. Good game. Not sure the Giants won it themselves, though Morse and Panik sure contributed, but the Phillies committed a couple of major fuck ups. But a win’s a win

“…but the Phillies committed a couple of major fuck-ups”…just insert Giants into that stream and you have last night’s game.
