Dominant
Last night’s 1 hitter was just a dominant performance by MadBum. Even though it wasn’t a no hitter, it was a better overall pitching performance than either of Timmy’s no hitters. I think the most dominant outing I’ve ever seen was probably Timmy’s 14 strikeout performance in the 2010 NLDS vs the Braves. He gave up 2 hits over 9 innings complete. But it just never felt like they Braves were going to score. Plus, the Braves were a very good team making it feel that much more dominant.
What’s your “most dominant” pitching performance you remember watching? (tv or live).
Just looking at our recent history, you have Dirrrrrty’s no hitter, Cain’s perfecto and Timmy’s 2 no hitters. And then you have last night’s dominant gem.
But there are others that I’m sure I’ll be reminded of in the comment section below…….
Even the good ones can get smacked around. The Yankees got 9, repeat 9 consecutive hits off David Price tonight.
saw that. Crazy. So, that was “not dominant” right? What was the most dominant pitching performance you’ve ever seen, WsWins, in your long life?
Marichal v Spahn was a great one….I was at the Koufax game when he was perfect against the Cubs, and the Cubs P only gave up one hit, a bloop double, to Lou Johnson. Kershaw’s this year was awesome too.
that’s kind of a rad story, you should expand on it.
And amazingly the double didn’t even figure in the scoring of the 1-0 victory…
Lineup tonight.
Why Duffy ahead of Panik?
1. Angel Pagan (S) CF
2. Hunter Pence (R) RF
3. Buster Posey (R) C
4. Pablo Sandoval (S) 3B
5. Michael Morse (R) 1B
6. Matt Duffy (R) SS
7. Joe Panik (L) 2B
8. Gregor Blanco (L) LF
9. RHP — Hudson (9-9, 2.99 ERA)
probably ’cause the Rox starter is a lefty that’s all snarkk…
Well, I suppose.
But, his splits against LHPs are .389/405/.472./877, way better than his splits against RHPs.
Duffy can’t match that, I would think. And if he and Duffy switched, it’d be the supposedly desirable R, L, R thing, including Morse…
Given the gravity of the game and quality of oppo, I’d give Lincecum’s game against the Braves in the 2010 playoffs the nod for most dominating. Even over the no-hitters. I can’t remember much back from 2010, though Lincecum sure had some gems in 2008-2009. Schmidt had some very dominant games back in the early 2000s that were impressive, but I can’t remember a particular one without Googling. Anytime before that, the disc drive memory is broken…
yeah, from memory I don’t remember much about 2010 until that 4 homer game v LA in LA. And I even might have some of those details wrong. Uribe and Burrell hit one, I’m certain of that….
Schmidt was a pretty middling pitcher for half a dozen years or more in the majors before he got to the Giants. Then, he was dominant with them for just a few years, then ended up with career ending arm trouble while bleeding the Dodger’s for huge coin on a totally dumb contract. His career track obviously raises suspicions of chemical assistance during that short-lived dominant period, but that can be said of just about everybody during that time…
He won 3 games for them and got paid 45 mil. That’s some pretty devastating math, no matter how you do it.
Schmidt is 82nd on the all time highest career salary list of MLB. $92 million.
That beats Kent (94th) at $86M.
Here’s the list. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/leaders_salaries.shtml
Lance Berkman is 48th with $124M? Lance friggin Berkman?
Bonds is 4th at $188M.
Schilling earned $114M, and is now supposedly broke and has mouth cancer, probably from years of chew. He was/is a tool, and I don’t feel sorry for anybody who blew $114M, but I certainly don’t wish cancer on anyone, and wish him recovery on that battle…
yeah, wishing cancer on someone is out of bounds. That’s why I don’t do it anymore. 🙂
Not to go off on a tangent, but IMO that wish is not out of bounds for people like the murderous, nutjob islamists in Syria/Iraq…
there’s no doubt that the insanity in Syria and Iraq is beyond disturbing. I guess I don’t wish cancer on them, but a giant bomb dropped on their heads wouldn’t make me sad……..
Gold Glove LFers: Morse or Trumbo? You may only choose one.
great question. Since you ignore the defense for both, I’d have to go with Morse since Trumbo has been hurt and awful since he got to Arizona. That was another dumbfuck trade that AZ has been a part of.
Defense is the whole issue here. You must choose one.
I choose Morse.
I don’t give a damn about Morse. He’s a clod when not hitting.
Sniff…
Despite the dogged determination of the Giants to give the Rockies at least one run in the first frame, the Rocks politely refused to take it…
Well said about Breaking Bad, Snarkk.
I was amazed at how I agreed with so many of the Emmy Awards.
Breaking Bad won a bunch of awards. The PBS Sherlock series won several. If you haven’t seen this version of Sherlock, it’s a terrific show. Each season is only 3 hour-and-a-half episodes. Each season is 3 movies basically.
Jim Parsons won again for Big Bang Theory. Cool.
Allison Janney, so great in West Wing (she won 4 Emmys for that show) won TWO more Emmys this past week. One for her role in a pretty good sit-com called Mom, and she won one for her guest-starring role in Masters Of Sex. 6 Emmys in her career! That’s pretty darned impressive for somebody who’s not a household name.
Veep won some awards again. It’s a very funny political comedy.
The guy that plays Phil on Modern Family won; that’s another terrific show.
And there’s probably a few more award-winners I liked that I’m forgetting.
I’ve been binge-watching West Wing. What a great show. I’d put it in my top 3 of favorite dramas:
1. Breaking Bad
2. The Wire
3. West Wing.
I have to admit I’ve never seen a single episode of the Sopranos. I just couldn’t summon the interest in a mob show. And I have a friend who swears up and down about how good Dexter is, but I’ll never ever watch Dexter.
I think a couple of seasons of Justified were first-rate, excellent, but the other 3 seasons were just pretty good.
I’d like to see Justified get some Emmy notice at some point. Next year is their final season, they’ve announced.
But how the hell is “Orange is the new black” in the comedy category?
I haven’t seen the show yet, so I don’t know. I know it’s getting rave reviews. Yeah, I didn’t know it was a comedy.
Interesting about Breaking Bad, The Wire, and West Wing, my three favorite dramas, ALL have moments of laugh outloud humor. I like when dramas can surprise with humor.
Sopranos and Dexter were both hilarious.
Thought Petit as going tonight. Turned on the game to see a runner on 3rd and 2 errors.
WTFuckity fuck?
Petit tomorrow in the getaway, that was the plan.
First Rocks batter in the first grounded to Morse, he threw high to a covering Huddy — bobble, booble, error on Morse, man on first. Huddy then throws pickoff try into the runner, ball scuttles off, runner to second. Error #2, this one on Huddy. He managed to escape the attempted gifting via the all-too-familiar Yakety Sax defense for the Giants…
with his hat on, during that catch he just made, Duffy looks exactly like Timmy when he got called up for the first time. Go back and look at it and tell me I’m insane.
I get that it’s another sell out but there couldn’t be much more than half full at AT&T tonight……
Wel this guy sure isn’t fooling anyone.
The clodhopper’s 7th or 8th HR taken away by Willie Mays.
you know, pitchers throw to that side of the park don’t you? They WANT you to hit it that way as a RH hitter.
I guess he’s not very bright, either. And the Rockies, incredibly, stupidly, didn’t score after Morse’s error and then their shitty pitcher handed Morse a 400 ft fly ball, even while fully exploiting his stupidity!
He’s must smart enough not to try and pull it like some
Once the ball gets hit in the direction it’s pitched it’s up to the defense. You can’t forecast how many feet a ball is going to go but you can direct it with a pitch. That’s what the pitcher is doing when they blast a ball to right center at At&T. I’m actually kinda shocked you don’t know this……
I aim to be nothing but shocking, BF. Apart from the oft repeated claim that the league consistently tries to bust Morse inside, on evidence tonight, the simple point I made was that in another park, he has a few more HRs. I think Morse has always hit a lot of HRs that way, so it’s not just the park-specific strategy.
Shit. Got to do more than that, Panik. Shoulda fell into the stands . . .
Blanco is hopeless.
dude, we don’t use the “h” word till Sept 1st. Come on now.
Regarding BF’s question about dominant pitching performances, I’m going to pick a game that I was at. It was Timmy pitching, and I happened to be watching from the best seat I’ve ever had at AT&T, about 6 rows behind the visitor’s dugout. It was 2009, I think, and it was against Arizona, I think. Watching the side view of Timmy’s pitches in his prime was a great treat. The batters were just guessing all game, Timmy’s stuff was so dynamic. Rowand, of all people, hit an HR, and the Giants won 2-0, or 2-1, something like that.
Yeah, every other seat looks empty. See, I’m watching again. Chiefs rallied. Magic number is 1 for playoffs. I got there late but it took me several innings to know the home team had softball type unis with Oakland A’s colors. Hunh? Something to do with Latino night. By the way, Burriss leads the IL in fewest strikeouts.
if Burriss ever makes it back to the major leagues, I’m going to tweet him that he should hire you as his agent.
haha I just ordered “World Serious” so I can give him a copy, but maybe he resents the Giants, for all I know.
Sadly, since Flav already mentioned those dominant games by Lincecum and Cain, the only games I can recall watching are ones that happened against the Giants. And the one that stands out is the Bobby Jones game, although calling that a “dominant” start might be a stretch given the junk Jones was dealing all game. But I remember the Giants being utterly helpless to get anything going against the guy.
that is good ref my man but I’m thinking your buddy Loo is going to go “60’s old school” on us.
Great call! I was typing before I saw your post!
Yes, I’m anxiously awaiting to see what DJ comes up with. And the “old school” part of it is interesting. I’m having a hard time recalling anything recent because there’s so few complete-game shutouts anymore. You might have a better chance of seeing a player hit for a cycle.
As for pitching dominance, let me think. I didn’t see the Marichal-Spahn 1-0 game. Did wswins actually see it? I don’t know. Tudor vs. Dravecky in the 1-0 game that Maldonado lost ball in the lights. Um, Petit’s game last year? (I was in OAK.) How about Jack Morris in game 7 of the 1991 Series? I don’t know.
didn’t se it pawlie…in those days I ate static on the radio listening to it. The radio station in those days was up around 1480 to 1500 on the dial.
Our “Good Luck Drunk” Tom Seaver’s near perfecto vs. the Cubs in July ’69. Somebody named Jimmy Qualls dumped one into the OF to break it up in the 9th. They couldn’t touch him.
Gibson’s Game 1 vs. Detroit in the ’68 WS. Completely overpowering.
I remember listening to Seaver’s 1-hitter in ’72, the one broken up in the 9th by Leron Lee. I think that was on Labor Day.
Saw Krukow outduel Fernando in a 2-1 win in one of the foggiest games I’ve ever been to. Saw Burkett beat randy Johnson when he played for the Mariners. One of the few time I ever sat in the lower boxes near 1st at the Stick.
Saw Schmidt strike out 16 . . .
Fernando beat the Mets 2-0. Maybe not dominant but dramatic. Same with a lot of Guidry games.
Pence looked to me like he could have pulled a hamstring. Hope I am wrong.
Yeah he looked a little gimpy but he got to third no prob.
Just seeing Juan Marichal pitch vs the cubs in Wrigley is a thrill I’ll never forget.
That’s the thing: he always seemed dominant. Must’ve seen him beat the Mets six times. Saw Masanori Murakami at Shea too.
He wasn’t too dominant this day, Pawlie but he still won it. Check out how many hits he allowed in the CG:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN196806150.shtml
wow…those days be gone; no manager would leave him out there today
He outdueled Seaver!
WTF. We need to be DOMINATING these guys, not flailing.
Don Larsen perfecto in WS. I’m saying that but I can’t say I remember anything about it. (Larsen was with the Giants twice, as a reliever. Alive, at 85.)
There’s the D . . .
Yeah, just when I was ready to buy into James’s bit on defense, Pablo shows some flash. I don’t know nothing about stats but that stopped any chance of the Rox getting a run in that inning.
Pawlie, in anticipation of this kind of sentiment, I’ve lovingly prepared a deadly dull litany of stats wrapped in an unassailable logic that will crush all opposition to the truth of my proposition.
I got sent home from work today because the epoxy used on the remodel at my job is making me dizzy and giving me headaches. I didn’t want to leave, but other guys got sent home too. So I went.
My daughter keeps putting a fucking ice pack on my head and this is irritating and not helping. But she thinks I’ve been poisoned. Thoughts on how to address this sensitive single parenting issue?
Put the ice pack on the back of your neck instead.
Have a Coke with ice and an Advil.
Don’t watch the Giants.
This is not far from what I did but i subbed the coke for a lemon snapple and a bong hit and I just subbed that last one in to entertain San Diggity Dawg who I know loves himself some of the greenish purple ganja.
Anyway, truth is, I feel like shit. Dog shit. Ice pack is now on back on neck. Kid is taking shower.
take a calm walk
Thank her and use the ice for the whiskey
Toxicity is typically a danger from chronic AND acute exposures. (I’ve done lots of enviro reports.) Tell her a one-time exposure is something the body can handle; it’s repeated and acute exposures to watch for. Blade knows all this OSHA stuff. They have something called Time-Weighted Average (TWA) and PERMISSIBLE Exposure Limits; so think about what those words mean. Your incident reminds me of when I smoked ONE cigar my daughter, maybe under 10, thought I would die of cancer immediately. That’s how afraid they are of smoking. Which is good, to a point.
thanks. My work is now scrambling because people got sick and I’ll wait for Blade’s report after he gets done jack hammering away on his whoever his date is tonight. But I do appreciate the info, thanks, Pawlie
Rest up, Crawford…
Blanco bunt single RBI! Where’s snarkk?
Those are two beautiful bunts; Blanco’s a textbook masterpiece.
Here I am, I needed smelling salts…
so where do I stand on unreported epoxy bullshit at work? I’m really not that worried about it but many co-workers are.
Well, I don’t know the facts here but people do sometimes get caught up in a kind of hysteria; Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) or Building-Related Illness (BRI) is sometimes more psychological than environmental.
It’s the anti placebo effect.

1 run on7 hits in 4 innings. There’s efficiency.
Colo? 1 run on 1 hit.
Pence parlays a 3-0 count into a k by swinging at garbage.
Wow Dickerson smoked that one right into the water, just as I was about to post something about Hudson (4 no hit innings) and Ray Washburn.
I really think the Rox have something with Dickerson, Blackmon, Arenado, maybe Rutledge/LeMaheu plus Morneau. I was them I’d dump oft injured and way overpaid Cargo and Tulo in a heartbeat, even if you have to eat salary. Get some talent, go younger and find as much pitching as possible.
Hey, new thread.
Willie, I almost guarantee some dumb ass GM would bite on Tulo and give up a couple of really good prospects to the Sherpas.
Flavor, if you are well and go to work tomorrow, file a report of “Unsafe/Unhealthful Working Condition” with your workplace safety representative or (hopefully) safety professional. These reports are required by law to be acknowledged within 24 hours (written letter of acknowledgement). Said letter will state they are investigating this incident and will provide your a report within _______ (usually, no later then a week). Last, but not least, insist upon a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) on the chemical material(s) used in your workspace. THIS IS IMPORTANT! it will have info on the OSHA permissible exposure limits (PEL) for an 8 hour and 40 hour time weighted average (TWA)*. Additionally, it will have the specific personal protective equipment necessary to work in the area (organic vapor cartridges/with a fitted mask . . . by the by, only people certified to wear a respirator) and engineering controls (local exhaust and general ventilation, visqueen barriers with negative pressure, etc.).
Shoot me an email if you have questions. Oh yeah, tell your daughter, you’ll be around at least until her HS graduation. 🙂
* Good job Pawlie!
