A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Respect. Focus. Winning. Giants.

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 5, 2014

If you want to know what a *knowing dude head nod” looks like, just lock eyes with a San Francisco Giants fan right now. Now in our third post season in the last 5 years, even the national idiots seem to be picking up what the Giants are throwing down. Focus. Unyielding focus. Distractions don’t exist. While the Nats are busy slamming their bats on the ground and screaming like 3rd graders at the umpire, the Giants take the same calls and just get back calmly in the box. Maybe a slight look back. That’s it.

And is there a better manager in baseball than Bruce Bochy? Matt Williams tried to justify his idiotic pitching change in the 9th last night by saying, “Why did we decide to take Zimmerman out? Because that’s the way we did it all year.” And that’s the exact thing I would expect a clueless rookie manager to say who has never managed before in the post season. And while chaos rained down on the infield during the ejections, Bruce Bochy, calm and in charge, made a beeline to the umpire to discuss the eligibility of Kevin freaking Frandsen and whether he had been announced and burned (or not). I am so thankful that I have a manager that can keep that type of attention to the detail of the game while all hell is breaking loose….

I said it before the playoffs started and I stand by it: I really don’t care what happens in 2014. Of course, I would love another world championship. But I don’t NEED one the same way KC and the Dodgers do. What I’m getting from my team so far this post season has strengthened and solidified the baddest assed *knowing dude head nod* that I have in me.

Excellent post Flavor. Paul discovered an “Asian Fox” network affiliate and apparently, they are showing ALL the playoff games. Can’t do anything about the 18 inning epic that I “watched” via ESPN Gamecast, but Monday’s game, I will be glued to the TV. I understand Bum is pitching???? I think that’s what Chi said. Anywho, I am looking forward to watching it.

However, I digress . . . Your post conveys what I’ve thought about the Giants and all the other “wannabe” teams that would like to hoist a World Series trophy. I really don’t know if the Giants have the horsepower to win another Championship. Coupled with the astronomical odds of even capturing one (as Loo pointed out – it took us 56 years). Me? I am grateful for the 2 we have. Or, in your words, “I don’t NEED one the way KC and the Dodgers do.” Again, great post!

I was at a school fundraiser at one of the parent’s houses last night (it started at 6), and I’m happy to report that of the 50-60 people there, 20-25 were crowded into the living room watching the game. Funny, we had plenty of time to eat dinner around the 14th inning, and still catch all of the craziness.

Yeah, I was wondering what Boch was asking about when Cabrera threw his tantrum (and Harper could have very well been tossed for his actions), and it was just awesome that he’s got such a cool head. I’m sure the players just think, shit, Bochhy’s playing chess while Williams is playing checkers. Pence, and 3-4 other giants had legit beefs, but level heads prevaill. The onus falls on Matty for pulling Zim. He was not even close to being tired or gassed, or whatever. The ump tightened up the zone on Panik’s AB, and one walk should not have been the deciding factor when Zim had gotten 20 Giants out in a row. This is how you learn to be a big-time manager.

I was scratching my head at Boch not pinch running for Buster, but as he wasn’t the tying run, I get that he didn’t want to lose his bat. I still think he was safe though. Flan could be questioned for sending him, but it was a bang-bang play.

When you look at Mattingly leaving Kershaw out there while the Cards rolled on him, and Zim’s situation yesterday, you understand the tightrope that Bochy regularly walks, and the fact that he is rarely wrong when it comes to knowing when a guy is good to go or not.

When Bochy pulled Peavy the other day, and he stormed off the mound cussing the whole way, and him giving Bummie the green light to go the distance, you see a guy completely in tune with his players and their strengths and limitations. He’s head-and-shoulders above just about every other manager in the league..

They started out with a leisurely but not terribly rewarding trip up the Hudson. Then they ran into a whole gang of Bullies. Next thing the flow of the Jordan caught some of the sediment and a Panik attack set in, sniffing a single Posey and then Pandamonium . Matters calmed down for seemingly ages during the trial before the Petit jury until the suspenders broke to get greeted by the fat lady belting out the Brandenburg Concerto prior to the Strychnine finale.

Act Three follows Monday when the nerve-wracked, nittery Nats come face to face with The Undertaker. Will that be the Grand Finale for the men from Urination’s Capitol? Tune in 30 hours or so from now to the next segment of the ongoing saga of the Nats with bats aflutter.

Incredible win, and no doubt we are starting to get in people’s heads about being a force to be reckoned with in this post season. I love Matt Williams and I feel for the guy having these 50/50 decisions bite him in the ass 2 nights in a row, but that’s the way it goes. After that devastating loss, we really should close this thing out tomorrow and I think it is kind of important we do so and not mess with a Vogy start or a possible cross country trip for a Game 5. I thought Wilco made a great point about Strickland mixing up his pitches better. I was nervous as hell when he came out there, but he looked very composed and obviously did a helluva job. This was my first time watching the guy pitch, and you can go ahead and add me to the list of people wondering why he has not had much success in the bigs with his stuff and command.
I had no problem with Flan waving Buster home and I don’t think enough credit was given to Ramos for the awesome scoop and tag he made on that play.
Much like Puig, I find Harper fascinating and love watching him play–the raw talent, the poutiness, the hair, the bouncing the ball on the bat 40 times using his weak hand–all very entertaining in my book. I like the Nats. I really wish we were doing this to the Dodgers or Cards, but that’s nitpicking isn’t it?
(Spinal Tap voice on that last phrase)

Yesterday’s game was a matter of desperation running into determination and of excellence trumped by savoir faire.

Respect is hard won and readily lost. No matter what happens the rest of the way the Giants have once again established the full respect of all who love baseball. There is no finer tribute than the respect of one’s peers.

No doubt now that everyone in baseball has a full measure of respect for Bochy and his intrepid band of professionals. Starting with a performance by Tim Hudson that was a virtual match for Washington’s best and a far cry from his struggles over the last couple of months, the Giants have become a study in discipline, focus and team cohesion. Students of the game will regard those two Rings and now this amazing drive with the level of admiration and amazement which only the Classics of the game will ever enjoy.

Also no doubt that the men in the colors of October have had one helluva happy flight home to The City by the Bay, ready to add yet another chapter to their saga of success.

Down by 1 in the 9th Duffy PH instead of Susac? Does Duffy have a better chance to hit one out? I think not..
.If Posey was the tying run, would he have been pinch run for? Then why not as the go ahead run….

Matt taking a lot of heat for the pitching change….Maybe he saw Kershaw the night before get raped out of the stretch…Zimmerman hadn’t been in the stretch for 20 consecutive batters. He also didn’t want him to face Posey for the 4th time…

Things played out the way they did. We won. I’m happy, But the 30 guys in the world who do what they do, are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Watched on the couch with Zeke. When Belt homered my Yessssssssss! was so loud that he boogied to the bedroom seeking solace from my wife. Petit’s outing was amazing.6 innings with every pitch the potential winner. I’d say that he was Game MVP but we’re used to this: the team was the MVP. These guys just know winning and Bochy remains the best postseason manager in the game.
That bat drop was as close as BB comes to showboating. Belt is so classy that he’s probably contrite about it.
Let’s get this over with tomorrow. 9 innings of torture last night have me tortured out…oops, final thought- our batting heroes were 2 for 14. That’s the playoffs for ya. 2 for 14 and they were HUGE..

That long fixed vacant look on the eyes of the Nats as they sit in silence on that flight to SF must have been priceless… There must also be some acid reflex flowing though the other post dwellers wondering if it’s deja vu all over again…
I’m sure thoughts like.. ‘they can beat us if they score first’…. ‘ they can beat us if they lost 2/3 of their OF’
…. ‘they can beat us if their down to their last out’….. ‘they can beat us if their backs are against the wall in elimination games’……
IMO, those teams might be focusing on the wrong C word…. It’s not the crowds or the cash…. it’s the chemistry…. When will they ever learn…..

Nice post Dennis. Giants are in everybody’s heads now. LaBumbos have everything they can do to finally get past their bad-luck Cards ~ in St. Louis, btw. Meanwhile the Cards have some rather unpleasant postseason memories about the Halloween Machine and did not do particularly well against us in the regular season. When it comes to the combination of psychology and chemistry the Giants stand at the head of the class.

Just watched over and over video replay of Belt’s drive. That pitch was tailing in ~ looked like a slider~ and about crotch-high about middle-in. With one quick, smooth swing he simply swatted it. S M O O T H. The last days of the season and now in the post, BB9 is demonstrating why is fast becoming the major keystone of the team’s recent resurgence. If the injury bug does not hit him next year #9 may be looking at the NL HR title. With good bats around him he should see enough decent pitches to belt a bunch ~ just like he was doing in April.

I know there has been much discussion on the subject, with two different camps of thought, but it is hard to imagine that the Giants won’t pay Pablo (regardless of the side of the discussion you support). This, IMO, is especially true if the Giants run deep in the playoffs, and he is a key to that run.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 5, 2014 at 3:01 pm

I hope they get him re-signed, but they haven’t seemed very urgent about it this season. They allowed the window of opportunity for Sandoval to test the free agent market. So, if Pablo signs a big deal with someone else, they can kind of position Pablo as sort of the “bad guy,” as in “he left us for the money,” that kind of thing. Which sort of side-steps the fact that the Giants didn’t offer a real serious offer during this whole season.
I see both sides of the discussion regarding Sandoval. There’s pros and cons to both sides.

Kap manages to get enough points on last few drives to hold off Chiefs, who weren’t able to do same.
Running game was awesome. Terrible penalty on KC for 12 men on field vs. FG—someone lands on practice squad for that one.
Chiefs had much tougher sched going in, taking on NFC West. Right now 2-3 with SD and Den ahead of them.
Ain’t gonna be easy road for them to get back into playoffs under Reid.

Niners won because of the fake punt and the unreal 12 man penalty on KC. Plus, Frank Gore. Outside of the pick to end the game, I thought Smith was much better than Kaep today……

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 5, 2014 at 5:06 pm

Yes, maybe. But the last few times they had ball he couldn’t move them, Kap did despite a lot of pressure up front. Running game saved him, sure.

Chiefs put a lot of heat on Kap but didn’t do great job vs. run or covering receivers. Charles looked good.
At one point Simms or the other guy said none of their wide outs had scored a TD yet. Obviously Smith doesn’t have near the talent around him Kap does.
The Thomas kid from Oregon looked great, nice weapon to have.

Chiefs are certainly good enough to make playoffs, but the division and that schedule gonna make it hard.

So this morning I caught up on the comments here from Saturday Night Sunday Morning (short story by Alan Sillitoe; also a movie, I think). It’s hugely entertaining to do that. Great stuff all around. It paints the game with a different brush. I watched the game at a loud so-called sports bar. I may’ve been the only person watching our game. (In the 13th some old guys next to me noticed it was on, finally.) Early in the game, to my right, were some good ol’ boys from Oneonta who hate government and opposed the Nationals merely because they saw an Obama link. Regarding Nascar, Tony Stewart isn’t even nasty enough for them; he’s no Dale. But they were jocular. I tweaked them by saying they should go for the Giants because, after all, SF is Nancy Pelosi’s district. Yankee Stadium Mystery Woman joined me at the bar for roughly the 10th, 11th, 12th. Who can remember? And I was drinking coffee. She as well. I fielded texts from local Giants fans. MLB TV? Try and find it on your basic cable. Nope. Or my laptop or tablet? Naw. Big MLB come-on hoax. At the top of the 15th I decided to head home. The game was now on the radio. It had not been at 5:30pm. My heart was in my mouth when Blanco had to flag one down; was it perhaps the 15th? Then at home I couldn’t even get audio feed! Thanks again, MLB. Follow the dancing dots online. When Belt hit his homer, I was afraid it would not be enough. And said that on Twitter. We won. Texted Magnus. He texted back. I wanted to blog. Too tired. Hudson. Sandoval. Panik, grande Petit, the bullpen, Belt, Posey. Everyone. Did this happen? People can second-guess Matt Williams, but as it was remarked, Bochy plays 3-D chess; others, checkers. What a night / morning. Whew.

I don’t think I have ever been able to get a postseason game on my MLB.tv package. I think because it’s a network televised game. I haven’t really had to try much, so I don’t know for sure.

      • pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on October 5, 2014 at 5:39 pm

but that was their promise when they offered it: “for the first time, including the world Series.” I get blackouts or need to confirm cable access (I have time Warner but only for Internet); it’s all impossible. MLB acknowledges as much when its website tells you how to finfd the channel!!

I would think with the Orioles clinching and if the Royals could do the same, the Giants game would be pushed back to around 4 maybe 5pm pt?

I try to think of what annoys me the most about Chris Collinsworth. I used to think it was just the way he likes to say the players’ first and last names all the time. But I’ve decided it’s more than that. It’s his….sort of worshipful tone about the players, or something like that. A player makes a good play, and Collinsworth talks about it like the guy rushed into a burning building and saved somebody. It gets to be a bit much.

  37. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 5, 2014 at 6:56 pm

While I’m quasi-ranting, leave it to Selig’s MLB to leave Giants and Nats fans hanging this long on what the start time is for TOMORROW’S game. Seriously?!! Is this any way to run a business? It’s bad enough the games are on somewhat obscure channels. MLB should talk to fans sometimes. MLB could learn something from their customer base, and improve their customer service.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 5, 2014 at 7:26 pm

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 5, 2014 at 7:08 pm

It’s not good for the sport. They worry about the next generation of young fans watching the sport, but then they sell their playoff broadcasts to networks that a lot of people don’t have. Were NBC, ABC, and CBS that uninterested in carrying baseball playoff games? That’s sad. I love the sport, but it’s never been the greatest at marketing itself, compared to the NFL and the NBA.

  39. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 5, 2014 at 7:11 pm

I’m watching the MLB network right now, and they just ran a commercial for tomorrow’s Giants game. It’s on the MLB network tomorrow, but the ad said “Check your local listings for time of game.” Are you kidding me??!! As of 10:00 Eastern Time, Nats fans still have no idea what time the game is tomorrow. That’s nuts.

The pisser is I just found out i can watch comcast cable tV over my iPhone, but they don’t offer MLB network as one of the stations! Fuck!

Good news is there’s a round table near my work that’ll be showing the game so It’s another pizza lunch So much for not gaining weight.

Alex Smith? Hit the short shit, missed most of the longer passes. Same as it ever was. Fast start, mediocre finish. When we got good pressure, he missed badly. My plan to beat him pretty much came true. Stop Charles, pressure Alex. If our red zone offense was a little better, the Niners would have d won by 17.

Good news was Kaepernick had more time to throw and they took advantage of it. Gore, still going, was great. Run game is back to being solid. They are running out of 3 WR formations. Something I’ve been calling for for a while. The defenseis looking better des[pite not having A Smith, Bowman or Dorsey.

Once those guys are back, and they figure out how to score TDs instead of FGs, this team will be better.

As far as Hardly Strictly goes, I haven’t been in years, but both my daughters have not missed it the past 5.

Shoemaker replaced Richards fine. He was nails in the 2nd half. Shit, guys go down. Richards was good but they had plenty of firepower to win the division going away. And then this happened. Oops.

      • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on October 5, 2014 at 7:59 pm

They will never know Flavor. Remember – were talking about a 5 game series. Similarly, if we had no Bum at the 3/4 season mark, but Joe Blow fills in and does outstanding, but flops in the Nats series – we wouldn’t be talking about how we missed Bum? Regardless, KC blew them out and one player wouldn’t have made a difference in this instance.

Just went back and listened to the calls of Pablo’s game tying hit in the ninth. Miller’s was about as good as I have ever heard. The Fox sports call by Matt Vasgergian (sic?) was pretty awesome as well. You rarely hear network guys get that excited on a call. Good stuff.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 5, 2014 at 7:54 pm

before Pablo came to bat I went back and forth with my buddy on why Gary Brown wasn’t pinch running for Panik. Arias could have played second (Duffy was burned). I hadn’t stopped to think about the go ahead run behind him. Of course Brown would have scored that run but I don’t think anyone ever could have reasonably considered that Bochy would have PR for Posey at 1B.
By the way, I intentionally didn’t mention anyone from the game last night in today’s thread because I didn’t want to tarnish the epicness of that game and leave someone out.
But how man-child were those 2 catchers? Both of them catching 18 innings? WOWza…..

I don’t get very many *knowing dude head nods* here in Jersey. But I’ll pass this along . . .

I went to a viewing this evening for a good friend whose father died last week (same friend who was at the epic Mac-a-Loo-za Mets game, so DJ’s met him). A bunch of his buddies — big baseball fans all — trickled in throughout the evening. Talk eventually shifted to baseball, and when it got around that I was a San Francisco Giants fan, just about everyone wished me luck and offered nothing but praise and respect for the Giants, and Bochy in particular, as they remarked how it looks like the Giants are headed for yet another incredible playoff run. So, yeah, it was kinda cool to hear such hard-core baseball fans speak so highly of the Giants.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 5, 2014 at 7:56 pm

I was thinking this same thing about division versus records or whatever the hell you would call it. The NL West is a tough division that gets no respect. On the other hand, the Nationals pretty much dominated in the west in the regular season. All of that is turned on its head now I suppose.
