A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Sun Rising High at 2:07pm Today

For me, this is another #noexpectations game. It’s much easier for me to admire what the Giants have done so far this post season than to expect them to continue doing it. After all, it’s almost unarguable that this is the worst of our playoff teams (comparing 2014 to 2010/2012). Our hitters stink and we have 1.5 reliable starting pitchers.

And yet here we are on the cusp of advancing to the NLCS. And we have the best starting pitcher in the playoffs going for us today.

It’s a day game, the wind will be blowing out a bit and it’s warm enough that the ball should be lubed up enough to leave the yard now and again.

Who will be today’s hero?

Today’s result is why I was thinking maybe Voggy/Tim combo today, so that if there’s a F up, Bum is tomorrow. Now with the loss, the pitching choices are problematic for the next two games. I guess Peavy and/or Petit could go if there is a game 5 back there…

Online reports are saying Posey ordered the Code Red on the bunt by Ramos.
Anyone in the mood for a Buster Bash?

Neg. don’t care. It was just one play, the giants didn’t get enough karma breaks on balls hit to Harper and didn’t do much with the bats otherwise either.
I’m at peace with this loss and how rad is it gonna be if we beat the Nats w/o a win from MadBum?

Whoever called it, whatever. The Giants pitching staff continues to show that it suxx as a staff in terms of fielding the position. I don’t know how it compares to other staffs in general fielding prowess, but I’m sure not impressed with it this year. Every time a Giants pitcher fields a ball it’s hold your breath time…

On that screwed up throw to third, Panda looked like about one inch away from another hammy injury and down for a month. Hopefully, he doesn’t have a leg problem blow up on him overnight. It was a poor throw, but he couldn’t adjust for some reason and just catch the damn ball to prevent the run from scoring. As far as Ishi is concerned, WTF was he doing out there in LF letting the ball get by him?…

There is a youtube video of the Bennett God Bless America mess. The look on Harper’s and Pence’s faces as he blows the words is pretty funny. On top of that, the video is posted by a guy named Jim Howarth.
Could that possibly be THE Jim Howarth who was the 7th outfielder for the 1972 SF Giants?

Are you trying to tell me the oceans aren’t “right with cone”?

      • SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on October 6, 2014 at 6:13 pm

        I don’t think so.
Loo–give me some Jim Howarth love for God’s sake!!
I’m guessing you’re one of the few Flappers who would know from Jim Howarth. Maybe you never did Jaeger shots with the son of a bitch, but at least you remember him?

Fun Fact I heard on Jeopardy a few weeks back: Jaegermeister is German for “Hunt Master”

      • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on October 6, 2014 at 7:12 pm

Dawg, I absolutely remember Howarth. He was another one of those guys who made it so clear to me that the slugging teams of the 60’s were history…

I see. I heard it in a loud bar and it sounded like he blew it but I wasn’t sure. He’s 1000 years old, if they’re going to send him out there live give him a tele-prompter…

Well, yeah, tough to keep winning consecutive games in the post-season; that was a great run. They still have their streak of elimination games won. Let’s hope they’re not starting a little streak of put-away games lost. Still got the knowing-dude head-nodding going on. Craig, something is terribly wrong when many of you in the US couldn’t see the game, and yet your friend in China was watching, and so was I (and apparently Steve too) here in Vietnam. Steve, that’s relatively new, since Fox Sports took over the Asia market from ESPN out of Singapore about a year and a half ago. ESPN Asia never showed these games. Sweet to be able to catch ’em now…. Breakfast time in Saigon; enjoy your evenings, Flappers….

As a team, the Giants turned 76 percent of bunts into outs, just below the major league average of 77 percent.

      Start with .071 Blanco?

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 6, 2014 at 6:30 pm

it wouldn’t surprise me to see Blanco moved down in the LU and Pence hitting lead off. Other than that, I don’t see a change.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 6, 2014 at 6:29 pm

I mean, what is Bochy really gonna do? These are his guys. This is the team. You keep rolling the non-triple A guys out there an hope for the best. As lame as Blanco and Ishikawa have been in the post season, I really have no interest in seeing Gary Freaking Brown or Juan Perez getting 3-4 at bats tomorrow……

      • pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on October 6, 2014 at 7:07 pm

I’m with you. And c’mon, as Bochy said in the postgame, the throw to third was a mistake, he tried to do too much, we move on. We move on.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 6, 2014 at 7:20 pm

I’d put Panik leadoff. Pence needs to be lower.

I was just thinking the same thing, Chuck,
I didn’t write it because I just figured it would never happen.

  9. pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on October 6, 2014 at 7:00 pm

I don’t know why Blanco does not simply attempt to bunt, every time . . . and as Krukow said, down the third-base line today.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 6, 2014 at 7:46 pm

because he’s an idiot? I’m not kidding. Why a guy with that much speed and no pop continues to use an upper cut swing every fucking time he’s in the box is just beyond idiotic…….

TV woes continued, so my friend Tommy (who has DirecTV but no game!) and I went over to Pat Hogan’s house to watch, on Tipperary Hill. Pat, a Nats fan, was back from 2 games down there in D.C.; Saturday’s game in a luxury box. Friday’s he bought Friday at 9 am by walking up and buying an SRO ticket. Anyway, he admires and respects our team. He saw me as a real doomer; fully expected us to tie in the 9th by the way he was pacing. I’m pretty much okay with all of this, as artfully described by Magnus in the main thread today and yesterday. “Pretty much okay” meaning not on any ledge and “where are your Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, A’s, Tigers, Reds, Pirates, Angels, Rangers now?”

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 6, 2014 at 8:16 pm

Seriously. Blanco should be chopping everything into the dirt like Vince Coleman and Ozzie fucking smith did for years in stl.

Watching the Dreadful skins give sea chickens a game (and then give it away).
The annoying T Mobile commercial with the guy trading in the old I Phone and dissing Siri…does have Bill withers Just the Two of Us. Which feature two great solos by my main man Grover Washington Jr.
The one he takes that ends the song, where he riffs off Withers low voiced words of the title, is one of my fav solos of all time.

Day games are killing me..can’t catch tomorrow either, will be in mgt meeting in Seattle for next 3 days.

Miracle DP keeps LA in game. Still down 3-1 going into the 9th.

BTW Dawg, Howarth hit his only career homer in 254 PAs off a pretty damn good pitcher, Claude Osteen…

Totally spaced on the Bums game until I saw Loo’s post. Probably would have missed most of it anyway, since I spent the morning at the U.S. Embassy (needed additional Visa blank pages added to my Passport . . . sucker is almost full after only 4 years). Well, as Mac said, “Not all bad today in the baseball world.”

  19. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 6, 2014 at 10:08 pm

Yeah, the Dodgers loss lessened the bummer of the Giants loss. The Dodger bullpen hasn’t been good in the playoffs so far. I wonder how Kershaw will do on 3-days rest. The Cards are holding off on Wainwright for Game 5, if needed.

  20. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 6, 2014 at 10:20 pm

Just catching up. Agree with many, not sweating today’s loss. Erase. Rewind. Delete. Go get ’em tomorrow.

And I vote no line-up change, outside of getting Blanco out of the lead-off spot. Panic and Crawford 1-2, and Blanco to the 7th or 8th spot.

Fucking bums lost. How Sweet it Is!

Bring it on tomorrow, and thank goodness it is a later game.

  21. sportdude's avatar sportdude said, on October 6, 2014 at 11:15 pm

Voggy is gritty. I say we win 4-2…He goes 52/3’s and bullpen does the rest…Dodger game is the reverse. LA pen blows lead in 7th again and we play the Cards. man it is weird rooting for them. Don’t like them, never have ( except when my boy Jack Clark is at the plate:)

I want the Giants to win this series, as well as the next one and next one and ultimately, win the WS . . . I just think at some point it may be a bridge too far. Not doomin’ here, just don’t think this team has sufficient horsepower to get it done. Regardless of what happens, I think this team was successful this season and I will be happy with our boys . . . However, I will be down and out – call it depressed, pissed, angry, sad, or whatever negative adjective you want to insert – if the Dodgers win the World Series. In short, I don’t want any &$%#@) troll coming to our site and puffing their chest should that happen.

I’ll be frank, if they frequent our site and Flavor allows it to happen – which I don’t think he will – I’ll be very disappointed.
