Hesto Presto and on to San Diego
I’ve got a lot going on today so this thread will be short. Great game last night. Super quick turn around for a 3:40 game against a pitcher that usually shuts them down is probably not what the dr. ordered. But these guys seem to be taking the same mentality as all other recent Bochy-led teams so maybe they come out strong.
We’ll see.
After the kid got over his initial nerves, he pitched pretty damned well. Mixed his pitches nicely and worked through a couple of jams. I hope like hell he gets another start. If so, it will be Opening Day, on Monday.
Fourteen hits…the team seems to keep that conga line moving, but of course, it was in the crooked number house of horrors referred to as Chase Field.
Time to see those new look Friars. I still am not convinced that their moves will translate to anything significant, but looking forward to seeing them.
GO GIANTS!
I was only able to watch game highlights, but it looks to me that Heston has some pretty filthy stuff. Not in terms of velocity, necessarily, but movement, which is arguably more important that just straight hard stuff anyway. That hard sinking fastball is great, as is that jackhammer yakker he throws, Sharp break on that one. I christen thee ‘Mr. Snappy.’ It looked like he has a change, too, but the highlights didn’t ‘highlight’ any of those.
91-92 is plenty hard with the movement he gets on his pitches. Me thinks he’s not going anywhere any time soon. A perfect tonic for the Giant’s woes.
Agree LJ. Good post.
Yep, I mentioned the other day when he got the call that he has four pitches he can throw (FB, Slider, Curve, and Change), and also that his fastball hits low 90s regularly. According to Fangraphs, his mix last year was:
FB – 59.2%, SL – 17.5%, Curve – 17.5% and Change – 5.8%. I think I remember hearing some ST chatter this year that said he worked quite a bit on his change, so will be interesting to see if he mixes that pitch in more regularly.
Here is his Fangraphs page:
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=10302&position=P
It’s awfully early, but already enjoying the Aoki McG additions. Consummate team players who give nothing but all out effort and fit right in. This team looks plenty strong mentally who won’t be fazed by adversity. Give the brass credit for putting together a team of character and moxie.
That double Aoki hit in the 2nd was a rope.
Agree 54. And it is amazing how many people raked the Giants (and Sabean) over the coals for their off-season moves. Sure, only three games, but like you, I dig what I am seeing so far. Keep the line moving!
Vis a vis Snarkk’s POTD, I’m going to take a more positive view of things. I still think Cain is going to come back fine. The first MRI showed no structural damage. Dr. Andrews will have the final say, but I think the Cainer is coming all the way back this season, based partly on his successful spring and partly on the fact that’s he’s a horse who loves to compete and is champing at the bit to get back out there and prove he can still do it. He’s 30 flippin’ years old, fer chrissakes, prime time for a big league pitcher. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. Don’t think I will be.
So, for the sake of argument, you’d then have 4 solid starters with Bum, Charlton (yes, I’m ass-uming that Heston continues to have success), Huddy and Cain. Vogelson was lousy the other night, but he thinks he pitched better than the final score indicated. I’ll lean towards him being honest about things, so he gets another shot and maybe gets it together. We haven’t even seen Timmy yet, so let’s not write him off yet.
So, that’s 4 pretty solid pitchers and I’m not sure most teams can boast 3 let alone 4.
That’s it. Go Giants, beat the Friars.
I din’t even mention Peavy, but I’m less confident in him anyway. Hope he proves me wrong.
Good post, LJ. Color me polly, too.
only if i don’t have to touch it
A different kind of story about the Pads: http://tinyurl.com/pgxpg4o
That’s a great story.
Awesome story Mac. Thanks for sharing, and a tip of the cap to the Padre org.
Wow. Tragic stuff but a huge gesture by the Pads.
Nice story, Mac.
My godson will be at all 4 games this weekend including today. He’s a die hard Pads fan and convinced they are going to playoffs according to his Mom. I told her, um, not happening.
Dodgers get DBax this weekend. LaRussa sure has built hella pitching staff–if Collmenter is your opening day SP that should tell you a lot about where they will finish this year. Giants lit those guys up.
Today is 37 yrs ago that end of season in NBA featured the scoring title duel btw David Thompson of Denver who got 73 in a game (3rd highest total ever) and George the Iceman, who later in the day got 63 of his own to win it.
Rick Barry and Downtown Freddy Brown of Seattle had a battle like this too one year on last couple days, when they traded off scoring 60 plus vs. each other’s teams.
One cool thing to me about watching live in person NBA was to watch premier scorers go off and get 40 plus.
George Gervin, one of the great swing men in history. The other guys weren’t bad either. I agree willie, watching the NBA live is the only way to go, even more so if you can get good seats. Just blows TV out of the water.
The latest dumb promotional contest MLB is doing is fans voting on a Franchise Four for their favorite team. Which four players have been the “most significant” in the history of each franchise? A kind of Mount Rushmore for each team. Then they’re going to honor all the winners somehow at the All-Star Game.
For the Giants, I would pick: Mays, Marichal, Mathewson, and Posey. I’m leaving Barry Bonds off because of steroidal issues, and it’s tough to leave McCovey off, but picking only four is really hard to do. “Most significant” could also have included Lincecum, because of his impact helping to start the current golden era. Snarkk wrote an excellent post about that a few weeks ago.
Saw that and thought it was idiotic too. I didn’t do the “vote” thing, but if I had, I would have included Bonds, because in my mind – his presence revitalized baseball in the bay area and he was instrumental in getting the Phone Park built. All the guys you picked, as well as McCovey and Lincecum. Limiting it to 4 is stupid . . . unless, your team is the Sherpas or other team that hasn’t had much success.
Great points about Bonds.
Yup, the Giants were about 5 seconds from going bye bye. Bonds and McGowan saved the day.
Mel Ott would be a good choice as well. If I was going to vote (I’m not) I’d only pick Barry, just to piss off the folks at MLB.
Yes, Ott would be an excellent choice as well.
McCovey’s an easy pick over somebody whose career might not last a lot longer.
Great win for the Giants last night, and every win they can bank until this guy gets back on the field is huge.

Francouer hit an HR yesterday to beat Panda’s Red Sox. Is baseball a wacky game or what? 🙂
The Giants game today, in addition to being shown on their Comcast network, is being shown on the MLB Network in many parts of the nation.
They haven’t listed what game is on back here yet, but I’ll check on it later today. Thanks for the heads up.
Yep, should be on the MLB network nationally in all markets (except San Diego and SF per the blackout rules).
The Dodgers now head to ‘zona, to the crooked number house-of-horrors. The Dodgers beat the D-Backs up pretty badly last season. Maybe Goldy, Perralta, and Lamb can go yard a few times and make a seres of it hopefully. Lamb beat out Tomas for the 3B spot. Tomas is now cooling his heels in AAA for a while. I was pushing for the Giants to sign that guy.
What the heck do I know? 🙂
I never saw him as a 3B, though. He needs to be an outfielder.
Giants hit .330 off AZ pitching staff, tops in the league after 3 games.
Pads home opener should fire them up after disappointing series vs. LA–their team ERA is 5.04 after Cashner got lit up last night, and they dropped 2 of 3.
Kennedy always seems to be thorn in SF side.
Pads had Myers leading off and playing CF (made an error), so see how that works out. Neither he nor Middlebrooks did much vs. LA. I think Hudson can shut these guys down even with the odd start time, at least for a while.
Big advantage for SF over Pads imo –pen depth, esp if Machi comes around. Kimbrel is only useful when Pads are ahead in the 9th, Benoit as set up. Giants have more and better guys to use situationally to get through tough situation before closer is needed.
Padres overall defense is suspect, too. The Padres’ firstbaseman Alonso is a butcher on the field. He’s got to be the worst fielding 1B in MLB.
The Padres’ rotation and ‘pen are head and shoulders better than SF’s, and their offense now light years so. Their OF defense falls a little short, though.
Orange Fridays, now Gold Saturdays? New colors for the ring ceremony, April 18th. I might have to get me one of these lids.
http://tinyurl.com/kqog5wj
Nice! And it’ll be cool to finally see what the new rings look like.
I got one after the 2012 Series, and it is pretty cool. At $42 shipped, though, I think I’ll pass this time. I’m such a swag whore anyway. You guys ever see ‘Fever Pitch?’ I’m getting to be like the Jimmy Fallon character more all the time.
If you don’t have one, definitely worth picking one up.
Lurker, in 2012 I got this Nike one, mostly because the year was on the back. I figured I could wear it as we continued to win Championships and the air holes were a plus for me as well..
http://tinyurl.com/k2fream
Yeah, people either love or hate the New Era’s, not too many fall in the middle.
I like the look, but do not like the way the New Era caps fit my dome (I prefer the low profile style hats). Will be interesting to see if they wear a special jersey
I know what you mean Chi. The 2014 official World Series lid is the first official fitted cap that I have worn in public since I was a kid. I don’t know if my head size changed or what but I could never find one that felt or looked right.
Luckily I get Baggs column regularly as link on Yahoo. My pc doesn’t like SJ Merc news–takes forever to load and scroll down, yada yada.
Baggs has his new book out and mentions there will be signings in San Jose, Marin and elsewhere on Peninsula. This isn’t about last year specifically but about famous games in particular years.
I’m not real high on Baggs everyday stuff but Band of Misfits was great, so I’m interested to check this one out.
Btw, few bloggers over there mentioned Pads going after Tulo. Wonder how serious that could be–Rox have plenty of hitters and good young guys, so Pads would have to give up an SP ++ I imagine. Also wonder how much $$$ they’d have to cough up on what is still owed pride of Fremont High of Sunnyvale (my alma mater, ’69)?
Bochy is moving up Crawdaddy to the 5th spot today,Like the move, he’s red hot and Buster needs the protection with Belt out.
Interesting move. McGehee wasn’t exactly chopped liver (hit .333 in Zona vs. .385 for Mudbug).
N. Aoki, LF
J. Panik, 2B
A. Pagan, CF
B. Posey, C
B. Crawford, SS
C. McGehee, 3B
G. Blanco, RF
J. Arias, 1B
T. Hudson, P
In relation to WillieD’s 12:09 post on the Pads…they’re payroll jumped almost 20 mil this year to 107 mil. Sounds like a nice chunk of change until you see the Giants are laying out 173 mil this year.
Astros about to get no hit.
Whaddya know, Lowrie homers to break the no-no.
I steadfastly refused to follow the whole game last night. Followed most of it. My iPad lit up at 2am, telling me of victory while asleep. Love me some Charlton! Some funny stuff here last night.

Tyler Beede and Christian Arroyo will start the season in Single A San Jose.
Btw, Loo’s comment to GH and his split personality last night was off the charts funny. That one liner easily could have been the highlight of any sitcom or comedy.
WilliesD the mind boggles if the NBA had a 3 pt line back in the day. Guys like Barry, Hondo, and all the shooters would have had a field day. 73 points with no 3s is tremendous.
Well, that didn’t work out very well.
I guess the key to the hit and run is, hit the fucking ball.
Not sure how many are listening to the KNBR feed, but I just heard where they are spinning Duffy up to play 1B on Saturday. I sure as hell would rather have him there than Arias.
Yes I heard that as well Chi.
Wotus was giving him a crash course today before the game per the skippers orders. Definitely like the idea as well over Arias any day.The kid impresses and needs more AB’s.
The Duffster is gonna be the new Zobrist with his versatility, and I can see him playing some OF too in a pinch.
They had Myers played perfectly. He hits a rocket up the middle, but right at the shifted infielder. Score one for the scouting report.
Nice fedoras they gave out at the Padres game today.
What’s that big bridge in the background? Coronado Bridge? My San Diego geographic knowledge is kind of weak.
Yeah that’s it Zumie.
Takes you over to the famous Corando Hotel,( where I believe theirs still a ghost that haunts the grounds)real nice area to check out for lunch are dinner with some cool shops by the water.
I sure like our infield D right now.
McGiggles fielding everything turning 2 consiently, Panik& Crawdaddy really jelling together like established vets, turning sweet DP’s as well, just solid so far..
Yes indeed!
Well, it sure started that way for McGehee. But even with the two late errors, I like him and think he is going to work out just fine.
Looks like the bus back from LA and the short turn-around have tired out the Pads.
What happened to Kennedy?
Too obvious
Pulled Hamstring Chuck.
Thks
Most teams give out calendars on opening day. The Padres gave out fedoras?
Reminds me of Affeldt’s first year in SF when he seemed to get a big DP every time they needed it…
That Cubano proved to be a nasty piece of work. He beat SF a couple times last year, though had a fairly decent ERA and a losing record overall. Wish they had started him vs the LaBumbos.
Angel!
Kimberly looks like a homo. Glad Pagan ass fucked him
So what does that make Pagan?
Hold my breath everytime Angel runs all out
Take that Kimbrel& Norris!!!
Pagan smoked that triple with bad ass attitude Mother Fuckers!!!
It seems you peaked too soon.
Fuck!
Like a fuckin’ roller coaster.
Probably the best they’ll ever do against Kimbrel.
Why the hell is Craw batting 5th?
Because he’s better than anyone else available?
Fucking Mcgheeeeeeee
Kuntos: no godd
I think when to use Petit and when to conserve him is going to be an ongoing dilemma for Bochy…
Goddamitt Kontos
McGhee looks like Brenly tonight
_
great job by Kontos
Time for someone to run into one for our team.
.
I’m no prude by any calculation, but do we truly need the graphic salaciousness here in a blog about baseball? Really?
The Year of Living Dangerously all wrapped up tidy into one evening.
=
You might look in the mirror when you say that.
Giants need to follow Padres example …
Wow… the trolls are even trolling the other trolls….. 🙂
Nasty pitching by Kontos.
Let’s breakup this goose egg game already!!
Anybody got fingernails left yet?
Cmon fat ass
This place is a graveyard for hitters!
They even moved the fences in again this season and still no one can launch one.
Is the old “jury box” gone?
Yeah!!!
Are you channeling GH?
Could be the start of a trend here, WJ…
Maxwell!!!
Bang bang Maxwell!
Maxwell: yes!!!
“Maxwell Silver Hammer made sure she was dead”.
Nice Fab Four reference, Stix.
I see Duffy has added the snot rocket to his repertoire…
Close this thing out.
Nice shot by Maxwell, good for him.
I think Pagan and Aoki need to come up with a code word for who has the ball. Banzai?
This ump is human.
Bit of an overreaction, don’t you think?
You named your right hand ump?
Ballgame!
WHOOHOO! WE’LL TAKE IT!!
Fucking “A”, now that’s a win.
Casilla is the most under publicized, under appreciated Giant of this great 5 year run…
He is. A veteran who does not get rattled out there and still has filthy stuff. He’s been a huge part of 3 titles and he already has 3 saves this year.
No doubt!
arguably so
I agree.
Yes. I kept thinking the Giants were going to let it play out until 1:30 AM ET.
