Brett Butler Sucks
Brett Butler turns 58 today.
I don’t like Brett Butler.
But I’d rather post about his birthday than discuss anything that happened this weekend at AT&T….
Am I missing any other notable birthdays today?
That is all……

Zum at 3:20 yesterday:
“The Warriors will save the sports day!”
Yes they did, but watching the Giants get swept by AZ was just bad.
DLR came into the game with an ERA way over 5.00 and had gotten smoked in LA last time out.
I can understand resting Posey since there aren’t any days off this entire week.
Pagan, who is in a righteous funk at the plate, I can see that too.
But obviously there is some dead weight. Pence might not be back by Thursday and Giants have 4 with Seattle before 3 in the Latrine. gotta hope Blanco is OK…which says a lot, huh?
yeah. That’s one thing the last week has taught us: don’t ever take The White Shark for granted…..
WTF…getting swept by the sorry-assed D-Sux….ouch. The Warriors win did soften the blow some. Speaking of blowing…I agree Flav, the Giants need to turn playing at home into a shop of horrors for other teams. Time to get healthy against the Mariners. I know nothing about them this year, as I just do not follow the junior circuit.
Other notable B-days…Let Timmy Smoke Lincecum, and Waylon Jennings (RIP).
Goint to the Rivercats game tonight to see Cain pitch. Irish Kev is going to be there, I am sure we will meet up for a brew.
Yes we will!! Can hardly wait. See you there Chi!
My son is going to the Seattle game on Wednesday.
Your son lives in Seattle, or will be up there to catch a game?
He will be up there on a vacation
I agree with this thread 100%
Dusty Baker turned 66 today. The 2002 World Series, although still more depressing than getting swept by AZ, just doesn’t seem that bad anymore.
Yeah, never cared for Butler and his god squad buddies at all.
Jaki Byard would have been 93 today, pianist with Mingus, Rahsaan, others.
DJ on jazz station I listen to had 2 hours tribute to Ornette last night. Played different era stuff from Atlantic up through Prime time and Harmolodic. They list tunes on the site,www. kcsm.org. which will show up sometime today re: 8-10 PM show last night. good stuff.
Must have been some great stuff played during that two hours. We don’t have much in the way of radio here that I’d like to listen to, and I forget that I can bring up WOZ or other great stations online. We tend to listen to what we have here. Heavy in the household rotation is Rhiannon Giddens new CD, Tomorrow is My Turn. She was with the Carolina Chocolate Drops and I loved that stuff, but her new CD gets stuck in my head so often that we just keep playing it.
Give her a listen if you haven’t checked her out. Zumiee and James you guys might be interested as well.
Was turned-on to the Carolina Chocolate Drops a few years back…really like their stuff, and was not aware that Rhiannon had gone solo. Checked-out a few of her new tunes online…good stuff. If you are listening predominantly to local stuff, you must be aware of the Avett Brothers? One of my favorite bands to see live. I like their music, but they find another gear or two live.
Kind of hard to believe Timmy turns 31 today. The odds seem likely that this is his last year as a Giant. It’s been an incredible era for the Giants, obviously. I’m not sure of his free agent value to other teams. It’s not going to be all that high, unless he finishes the season really strong.
I don’t know, Zum. I think if Timmy continues having a “decent year” (decent in comparison to his last few), then I think there is a chance you see him back in SF. I would not expect it to be at the coin he is getting now, though. Will be interesting to see what transpires in the off-season.
Hard to imagine that Affeldt is back next year. One thing for certain…the team will NOT be paying Scutaro (yep…they are paying him 6.6 mil this year), but with his contributions in 2012…I have no problem with that. WTH…it isn’t my money. Giants have 116 mil committed to salaries for next year.
Regarding Brett Butler; a classic moment:
fantastic find….
Hilarious…
Zumiee, I bow in your general direction.
That was a jewel of a find Zumie, I’m still cracking up…
It was God’s will.
Is it definable as some new kinda virus? GDPitis. Yesterday the reigning master of the GDP all by himself accounted for 40% of those committed by the team. Inspired by his amazing proclivities, three of his teammates contributed to the FIVE innings that the SF offense was overcome by the virus. Evidently this plague is highly contagious and might be at least somewhat assuaged by removal of the primary source of infection.
Mc DIldo makes Ray Ray look like Ted fucking Williams.
Lqtm…
The DP outbreak is highly contagious with Giggles even when he miraciously gets a walk, it spread to Posey…
as xoot noted yesterday, tomorrow is Bloomsday…..
I swear to God if I see McDickweed play ONE MORE GAME I’m going to disavow this team.
The fucking guy is a black hole of despair. He radiates suck age and he’s dragging the team with him. If I was him, my contribution would be to never swing the bat again. Better one out than 2. AAAaaAaaaaaarrtggghhh.
I’m heading to the game tonight so just mark it as W.
Ineluctable hilarity of the risible . . . .
Marcus Semien, Oakland’s error machine, averages 1 gaffe every 12 chances. McG, 1 every 16. Fun-house perspective: Omar Vizquel, 1 every 65.
I can’t believe the Pads fired Bud Black. I’d love to see the Giants bring him on board and groom him as Bochy’s successor down the road. Very similar managing styles in my opinion, and I’m a sucker for the Roger Craig/Candlestick bloodlines.
I guess he’s done some coaching but Dave Roberts as interim replacement is a bit odd.
you don’t think they’d give it to Wotus? it would be brilliant if the pads off another manager who goes to the giants and eventually wins multiple rings. it would be like deja vu all over again.
Nice Yogi quote thrown in there. 🙂
Giants have changed managers a few times while Wotus was on the staff…I just don’t see it ever happening.
Agree SD. Black is unassailable. For whatever reason something John Madden said sticks in my head about firing coaches:
“If you win a Super Bowl before you’re fired, you’re a genius, and everyone listens to you. But a coach is just a guy whose best class in grammar school was recess and whose best class in high school was P.E. I never thought I was anything but a guy whose best class was P.E.”
Not sure if this was kicked-around on any of the weekend threads, but Sabes was recently in Chicago, and was supposedly scouting out the Red’s Cueto and Leake.
Question: Should the Giants look to make a move at the deadline, and if so, what/who should they target?
Cueto of course.
It has been said they have always liked Leake.
Rumors have been flying for weeks Black was a goner. Pitching hasn’t been good and that’s his area of strength. I guess they could have made the pitching coach the fall guy, but Preller made all those snappy headline grabbing moves. He needed a bigger head to roll I guess.
Wasn’t Bud Black are pitching coach before Rags?
wasn’t it Dick Pole?
Yep…Pole was the pitching coach prior to Rags.
Black was with the rally monkeys.
The skinny on Leake is he might fit well at phone park and away from Cinn. Has a career 3.55 era away from Cinn bandbox. This year, he’s flashing a 0.917 whip away from Cinn in 7 starts.
Fwiw, Career 2.55 era at AT&T in just 4 starts.
He’s due another 5m this year, then a FA. Quite frankly, he’d start ahead of Peavy Hudson and VSong ..and with the direction TL is headed…
I would be happy with either Cueto or Leake…
They are both FAs though at the end of the year. No way I do a deal without getting a long-term commitment. No rentals!
I know it is getting closer and closer to the trade deadline, but they are half way through the June swoon, and only 3.5 back of da bums. So let it ride till the end of June see what happens
You can let it ride Kevin,Just don’t put in money down on Black..
Didn’t the Pads let Bochy go so they could get Black? If I was Boch, I don’t think I’d be a happy camper if the Giants hired Black, strike that, I’d be fucking pissed off.
Would think Gardner would be the heir apparent to be PC IF there was an opening.
If the Dubs win this title, is Curry the new Joe Montana for the Bay Area?…
Don’t know because I’m not near the “pulse” of the bay area; however, in my mind – no way in hell.
Actually, for the younger generation, e.g., my younger 2nd and 3rd cousins, they love him and the Warriors.
Gary Brown pitching in a Triple-A blowout is a thing that happened yesterday. He gave up five earned runs on seven hits. What’s next? Playing catcher?
Another B-day: Billy Williams turns 77 today. Heard on the radio, did not know this, for a time Williams held NL record for consecutive games played at 1,117 from 1962–71.
Wow, that trumps about everyone on the planet. What a hitter, my fav Cub of all time.
Another one of the Bama boys, like contemporaries Mays Williie Mac and Aaron.
I’m not saying you add Bud Black to the coaching staff, you simply get him on the payroll and off the open market. Advance scout, roving instructor, assistant to Dick Tidrow—something like that. Then let this season play out and see if he fits with the coaching staff at China Basin next year.
We’ve had great success with these Padre coach castoffs and I think Black could add to that pipeline nicely.
Sure, I’d take him on the staff anywhere in a nano-second. Maybe he’d like the break from managing, too.
…as for Steph Curry being the next Joe Montana, I’ll borrow a line from freshly marrried Shrek when the King asked him if he could be expecting any grandchildren soon:
“It’s a bit early for that, isn’t it?????
Curry would be the next Tim Lincecum, post 2010 WS. But I agree, it’s a little early for him to be compared to Montana…….
Steph will need a lot more bling on his fingers before comparing him to ” The Legend Joe Montana.”
And at least he can’t wind up playing for KC, unless Kings go back in time.
So, is Jon Snow really dead? :-p
Cruz finally shows some defense four years too late.
I don’t know why Black would be something special for the Giants. Nice guy, ex Giant, but hasn’t won anything in Diego; best year was 2010 when they cratered late and the Giants beat them out to get into the playoffs. Bring him in and the coaching staff may see the writing on the wall for them — who knows what that might do to coaches up and down the organization. Wotus would probably figure WTF? and I wouldn’t blame him…
Bozo and Chi, I’m with you on the Carolina Chocolate Drops/Rhiannon Giddens. Great stuff!
I can’t take much more of Hudson.
Well I can’t take anymore of McDP even more then Hudson.
so done. Should have called it quits at the ring celebration.
Defense could have been better.
Recently finished season 2 of The Newsroom. Great show.
No way that ball should have dropped in. Didn’t help to give away a run with a struggling Huddy. The utter lack of solid AAA OFers to help out is really hurting right now, when the team is down two OFers. Parker and McDP and Broadway are the answer to the loss of Blanco and Pence? Sweet…
I’ve seen enough of Parker for a while.
They say the Dog Days of summer occur in July and August. Coulda fooled me.
Gee Flemming,
Did your Stanford degree help make you think Hudson’s gonna get pulled after a hit &walk ,when everybody else already knew, especially Boch on the top step of the dugout..
Your killing me Smalls!
I’m feeling like Bochy and the Giants are wasting Petit. The guy gets called in on a very irregular basis, so he can’t get into a groove, and usually gets the call when the game is a mess. This one’s still salvageable at 3-1, but a bunch of his earlier ones seem to me to have been basically suicide missions. The guy should be tried out as a starter at some point. Voggy and Huddy are looking pretty scary these days…
Ahhh, looked like an actual hit with RISP
It doesn’t matter how we use Petitif \we average 0.75 runs per home game.
This shit is unwatchable.
Maybe he can hit? I think he got one in the WSeries, I seem to remember…
Looks like the Mariners aren’t getting much of a bang for the buck with Cano. Wow.
Giants simply should not lose to this dogmeat Seattle team at home.
Mariners lost 13-0 yesterday. Sounds like Seahawks v. Niners.
Great defensive inning by Crawfish, BTW…
McDP with the swinging 3rd strike at a ball in the dirt. Petit could do that…
McCovey would have hit his own statue off that pitch…
Affeldt with another gopher ball.
The guy needs to pay more attention to his pitching, less to his charity.
I agree with Chuck.
This shit is unwatchable.
And, I’m listening to the radio.
Gnight Flappers….
lqtm
Can the Giants start wearing their away unis at home? Maybe bat first? Move their home games to Sac? It’s incomprehensible how their batters can mash it on the road, but look utterly pathetic at AT&T.
Give that man a Segar!! Ballgame!..
Kruk…I really like the mechanical spin on Affedlt curve ball, great bite,,
Next pitch Fastball down Broadway, dead silence, response as Segar blast a bomb into the night!!
Just cause it’s a slow night, due to the Giants pathetic attempt at playing baseball, I have a Darren Ford report from Sac…
He got called out on strikes 2 nights in a row for clock violations in the batters box!!
I say Bravo Darren, maybe the Big league boys should do this on this home stand, so Flappers suffer less depression on this home stand..
That’s funny, the fastest guy on the team is too slow in the batter’s box.
Ahhhhhhhhh. Funny how easy it is for other teams to score runs.
Yep, even the M’s, 29th in runs coming in, with a DH still behind every NL team except Philly.
I’m also very happy to see we are giving Cano his chance to shine.
Meanwhile in Friarville, the managerial change doesn’t appear to have helped.
At least nothing is leaving the yard off Strick, but end result (3 straight base hits and run scored) is the same.
This guy needs a lot more polish before he is ever closing.
