A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Death By GreinkShaw…

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 1, 2015

Not really sure what to say about that game except to honor those of you who stayed up to watch it.

Krukow said something interesting yesterday on KNBR. When asked about Agent 000 he said “Look, he’s not a major leaguer.” That’s a pretty blunt statement in public about a guy who has been a major leaguer for so much of the season. And look, he’s right. I’m going to try to remember that the next time 000 screws something up. It’s not his fault he’s on the team.

Somehow they have to win the next to games. Maybe *have to* is overstating it. But the calendar is dusty and worn. There are only so many games left in 2015……..

Agent 000 hasn’t done anything to change my opinion of players that wear number 1. So annoying.

I don’t think it’s overstating it at all. At what point in a season do you start worrying about these things? 4.5 back with Grienke and Kershaw looming, that’s bad enough. 6.5 back? All but done. Piss poor loss last night. Adrianza isn’t a Major Leaguer, he’s a joke. Why not call it like it is. Time to cut their losses with this fucker once and for all.

Well, with rosters expanding today, unfortunately, he is not going anywhere. But hopefully his playing time will be minimum. Panik is supposed to do a rehab start on Thursday…hope that goes well. We need him back healthy for this stretch run!

I thought last night was the must-win to get two down in Hel-LA…but probably need just to split these next two to keep moving on. Losing tonight is close to a death blow…I made it into the 9th last night and then stirred awake about 3:30 to rewind the DVR and suffer like the rest of you…

I bet Bruce was torn before the game. Craw is back, WOOT! Gotta rest specs, a rookie not used to the whole show and all that demands on top of playing. Got nobody until tomorrow, damn.
Someone said ‘a lot of chances’ and with Peavy looking good IN THE SIXTH with a 2 run lead? Byrd, Duffy and some almost homers? This was a battle that we have to recover from and _damn_ back at it this evening.

Who on the 40 will pick it up tonight?
    Go Gigantes!

  6. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 1, 2015 at 7:47 am

Tough loss, plenty of chances to score they couldn’t take advantage of.
I was sure when Johnson came in they could do it.
Lot of good innings from pen, except the last one.
Not sure how much DeAza will add, but likely more than a Lollis or Parker, or of course OOO.

Like SF, Dodgers getting a blessing in disguise with injuries that allowed a chance for Ethier to play. Miller said he had been hottest hitter for them in August and even though Peavy had owned him he got a big HR.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2015 at 10:58 am

De Aza was added mainly as a LH bat on the bench and occasional starter.

I mean, the fact that Kruk called him “not a major leaguer” on the air is as damning as it gets for him. How is he supposed to go out and do his job if the freaking radio guy is calling him out on the radio like that? I think everyone knows he shouldn’t be up here, but my point is, that’s not his fault. It’s Sabean’s for building such a shit bench. Sabean ALWAYS has a shit bench.
And it doesn’t have to be this way. The Cubs went out and got Austin Jackson FOR THEIR BENCH. Now THAT is some solid GMing…….

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 1, 2015 at 8:08 am

True. I was bummed when I saw Cubs got him–he could start over Fowler. Giants could have blocked Cubs too. DeAza hasn’t done much for ChiSox in his whole career then put up nice numbers in Fenway, which is what everyone does. Park factor.
Giants now have 4 guys who can play CF, including Pagan. See how this plays out for Sept. and of course next year. I’m still betting it turns out Pagan needs off season surgery/rehab and what’s really been wrong all season finally comes to light.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 1, 2015 at 8:14 am

And maybe Giants Pagan love is the real reason they passed on Jackson. If they picked up AJ and he started and played well you’ve got a logjam in the OF, with a couple guys that are FAs not interested in sticking around and the guy you are paying $10 mil to next year out of sorts and wondering about his role.
Still, that’s an issue for off season, not now, and I don’t see any reason to play OOO over a Frandsen who has at least hit ml pitching at times in his career.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2015 at 11:01 am

Overall, I have been happy with the job Sabevans has done. But you are right…the Giants bench almost ALWAYS sucks, and that is on the GM! They had their chance to do something before the deadline. And I get it, they popped the salary cap when they got Leake. Fuck it…you are already over the limit, it would not have been that big a hit to add a good quality bench IFer…fucking pisses me off.

  10. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2015 at 8:41 am

Well, what a brutal way to end a night. Tip of my cap to the east coast Flappers who hung-tough to the end last night. Must have been almost 4 a.m. back there. It was tough rolling out of bed this morning…needless to say, I did not get my ass outta bed when the alarm originally went off at 5.

You are right Craig, it isn’t Adrianza’s fault he is on the team. I hang that shit on Sabevans for not strenghening the bench when they had a chance.

But Agent Zero is hard on the eyes, dammit! I swear if Tomlinson was in for any of those Adrianza ABs in the extra frames, I think we are singing a different tune. And if my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.

But, as Paul points out…we are running out of time for those “if” possibilities. Coulda shoulda woulda is not going to flush rest of the way down the stretch. They need to win tonight…badly. No, it isn’t a must win, but as close to a must win as you can get without being mathmatically eliminated.

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on September 1, 2015 at 8:52 am

No win tonight and the team may be psychologically eliminated.

At least Tomlinson should have had a modicum of rest. Buster, i worry about. De Aza came plenty cheap as Ysla was maybe the system’s #40 pitcher. Sox are probably in a housecleaning mode regarding salaries and such.

Bochy got burned AGAIN by leaving Peavy in to long. League is hitting .381 off him 3rd time through the line up (that’s the number I think I heard on the radio). That’s an impossible thing to *gamer* your way through. He’s old, he’s only got so many bullets in him.
And what’s this nonsense about *saving* Huddy for Denver. That’s a horrible idea. He’d just be an older version of Heston. That start HAS to go to Petit………

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on September 1, 2015 at 8:54 am

Totally agree on Peavy. No way should he have been kept in to give up that go-ahead dinger. Could be he shouldn’t even have started the inning. Burned out bullpens will do that to a manager.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2015 at 12:36 pm

Burned-out bullpen, or a starter who cannot finish the 6th. Pick your poison, but Peavy’s inability to finish the 6th, and to get lit-up, is pretty well documented.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2015 at 11:07 am

Yep…a friend messaged me and told me that 3rd time through the order Peavy was allowing on OPS of 1.055. As soon as the bums had a baserunner in the 6th (Rollins, I believe), Bochy should have went to the pen. I get it they have history from SD and shit, but that was then, and this is now. Peavy CONSISTENTLY has problems in the 6th. Wake the fuck up Boch…

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 1, 2015 at 8:58 am

I missed the double switch that got E-ofer in there in the 1st place. Was it to switch out Peavy? Musta been as he was coming up in the bottom of the 6th. So, Peavy doubly fucked us.

Which is why I’m sure Bochy left Peavy in there. Gaaaah!

Fuckity fuck. Even treading water at this point I think would be a small victory. Both would make me a lot happier. The Dogs don’t go anywhere farther than Colo either, but they do have 3 with Pittsburgh while we have 3 with Cincy.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 1, 2015 at 9:24 am

I just don’t get it. Here’s a question: If it had been Crawford who made the last out in the 6th instead of Tomlinson, does Bochy make the double-switch? I think not.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 1, 2015 at 9:28 am

And there’s no big advantage having Adrianza batting instead of a pitcher, anyway.
It was a bad move by Bochy, in a game where he actually got out-managed by Two-Trips. That’s got to gall Bochy; getting out-managed by Two-Trips.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2015 at 11:09 am

I agree. Bochy should have told the kid (Specs) that he needs to suck it up and play another couple of innings.

As I mentioned earlier…had Tomlinson been in there for Agent Zero in any of those ABs in extras, I think Tomlinson would have delivered and driven in a run. And Adrianza fucked us the other night with his glove when he bobbled the ball while trying to turn 2, which would have ended the inning (and isn’t his glove why he has supposedly stuck). Next batter ropes a fucking double, two runs score, and goodbye win. I am so sick of seeing that fucker play…and yeah, I get it…not his fault, but he flat fucking sucks!

  13. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 1, 2015 at 9:26 am

All of us knew there was no way Peavy was getting through the top of the Dodger lineup unscathed in the 6th inning. Well, apparently Bochy didn’t know. When Rollins led off with a hit, that should have been it for Peavy. But that would have meant that a reliever needed to be warming up to start the inning, and Peavy would be all butt-hurt about that. I’m just so tired of the Peavy, Vogey, Cain, Lincecum, Hudson, Heston house of crapshoot. The Giants have to upgrade the rotation next year in a major way, or we’re heading into a bleak season next year.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2015 at 11:13 am

They need to sign Leake, and then add another quality starter. They do have about 50-60 mil coming off the books. Giddy up…time to reload in the off-season!

  14. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 1, 2015 at 9:30 am

Broadway instead of Petit. Bochy is kicking himself over that one this morning. I didn’t get it at the time. Petit has had his struggles, but still, to throw a rookie into that fire last night just seemed destined to fail. After Broadway’s first two pitches sailed all over the place, I knew we were hosed.

    • salty's avatar giants54 said, on September 1, 2015 at 9:50 am

        Good point. I’d forgotten that.
Really, we can blame Affeldt as much as anyone. His ridiculous injury is the reason Broadway is on the roster. Affeldt let his team down.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 1, 2015 at 10:00 am

Affeldt let the team down with his pitching. If he was pulling his weight, he’d likely not have hit the DL.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 1, 2015 at 9:36 am

Petit has been a real quandary this season. I thought he was fully ensconced as the long guy but he is used randomly and has been all season. His role has been sit on the bench for 10 days, pitch a couple innings and sit again for long stretches. I think he hasn’t been able to gain any consistency because he has no clue what his role is. He should be well-equipped to help with these short outings by the starters, but he hasn’t been used that way at all. Far be it from me to question Bochy, but I don’t get it.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 1, 2015 at 10:08 am

exactly. And in every interview I’ve heard from Bochy this year, even up to as recent as last week, he talks about how invaluable Petit is. Petit is like Nigel’s guitar in Spinal Tap. And I think this is a brilliant analogy.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 1, 2015 at 9:57 pm

Like I’ve said a lot before, Bochy has total mishandled Petit all season. The guy doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going. Disappears for a week or more. Then, he comes in when a game is out of hand, like he’s the Pen janitor. Can’t be good for the psyche, nor consistency in preparation and execution…

  16. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on September 1, 2015 at 10:18 am

Too much leash for Peavy, going to Lopez early, extending Romo and Casilla. All of Bochy’s moves last night were desperate rolls of the dice. I was amazed that it even got to extra innings to be honest. Going into this series September couldn’t get here fast enough. I don’t even know what to think of the De Aza move. Are we sure he’s not related to Adrianza?

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2015 at 11:19 am

Outside of leaving Peavy in too long, and going to Broadway instead of Petit (and perhaps 54 was right in mentioning the 50 some pitches thrown by Petit on Saturday). But overall, I thought Bochy did a good job at using the pen, sans Peavy.

Bochy has said that De Aza was added as a LH hitter on the bench, and to get the occasional start. As others have mentioned, he is probably better than any of the other options (HoloLollis, Parker, or Williamson, etc.).

      • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on September 1, 2015 at 11:25 am

Susac in tonight since Posey caught all 13 +? Maybe with Bum going tonite and vs. Kershaw Wed (Susac hits LHP pretty well) Posey goes in anyway.
Susac has had a tough time of it, but not much PT since coming back. And he got hurt sliding into 3b on a triple in first place. He does bring more things to the table than most of bench.
He’s learning a lot I think being with Posey vet SPs, Rags, et al. Back up Cs aren’t really supposed to hit much and he’s probably better than he’s shown this year. Maybe he plays winter ball and comes back stronger player.

You guys are a little harsh on the bench guys. I can’t remember the last Giants team that had so many injuries to the Starters. When was it, last week not one starter in the outfield! Blanco with the most experience. Now you toss in Susac, Panik, and Crawford. I won’t even get into the pitching staff. So now you have bench guys playing everyday, not playing once every 20+ games to rest a starter or to actually come off the bench to pinch hit. Most if not all are just that bench players not starters. Whole different mind set being a starter at the plate vs coming off the bench trying to get a hit.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on September 1, 2015 at 1:56 pm

I agree Kevin. Hell, Panik was a bench guy last year. Duffy was a bench guy at the start of this year, Byrd would be (what a great fucking pick-up he has been, 17 RBIs in 10 games). In the past, Uribe, Ross, Ishi, Blanco, etc…I don’t know why Sabes likes Mr. Outta Options, but Sabean’s track record has been better than mine, so I say, ya gotta roll with it.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2015 at 2:10 pm

Kevin, you said “So now you have bench guys playing everyday, not playing once every 20+ games to rest a starter or to actually come off the bench to pinch hit.” And we know that injuries are a part of every major sport, and THAT is why you must have a stronger bench. If you must call on guys (due to injury, etc.), they MUST be able to perform. Adrianza DOES NOT fit that mold. We all have our opinions…I think the bench is SHIT, and needs a serious upgrade next year.

“I don’t know what else to say that already hasn’t been said. Krukow is spot on about Adrianza, and yes it is definitely Sabes fault for not upgrading the bench. I think Evans is at fault too; especially since this is his first year at the helm. He was an asst. GM before. I mean, fuck man, open up the fucking checkbook this winter and sign some reliable major league fucking players that can come off the bench and hit. I’m fucking tired of watching 5 foot 11, 160 pound wet rat Dominicans swinging at shit with a fucking wet newspaper.

Peavy. I’m with you on Bochy’s man crush with him. Celeste is too. I told you in a text this morning that the third time thru the batting order anytime Peavy pitches, the OPS skyrockets to over 1.000. Fuck, get him the fuck out of there after the second go ’round. While you’re at it Sabes and Bobby, go out and get some high caliber pitching this off-season. Fuck, the team is worth $2 billion with an operating revenue of $400 million. Go after a Zimmerman, or a Price, or a Greinke and re-sign Leake. Stop lining your pockets with the excess revenue, then go out and sign someone like an Ian Kennedy. Fuck. That. Shit.”

However, when something that was perceived to be valuable was given up in the case of the Beltran trade, it totally backfired. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again … 4 in 6 would have been a dream beyond imaginable. Yet, I only wanted the Giants to defend their championship in the most honorable and dignified way possible. For me personally, all that would have taken was to make the playoffs this year. Sure, losing in the first round – whether that was a defeat in the single wild card game or a being vanquished in a series playoff – would have been frustrating and disappointing but nothing compares to the disappointment of being eliminated before the dance even begins.

    Odd Year Legacy:

In 2011 we were eliminated by the Snakes in late Sept, finishing 8 games back. What was to blame? Busters broken leg? Sandovals broken hand? Major suckage from Rowand, Huff, Tejada? Bum’s 0-6 start? Carlos Beltran? Who knows for sure?

In 2013 we weren’t even anywhere near being in it by the end – mathematically eliminated before the second week of Sept (only a formality). Finishing, I think,16 games or so out, fighting the Pads for 3rd place. What happened that year? Losing Pagan as he seemed to be entering his prime? Lincecum’s emergence as a incomprehensible consistently inconsistent force – throwing a no hitter one minute and looking like shit the next. Was it his fault? … who the fuck knows for sure?

What are the excuses this year? Insurmountable injuries? Over-the-hill starters unable to get through a lineup a third time which consequently manifests an exhausted pen? Shitty no-punch bench? A weird occurrence of overall very good offensive stats but somehow a seeming lack of situational hitting? Who knows? … I sure the fuck don’t!

Whatever … maybe we end up a little closer than ever before in recent Giant history to finishing a season truly being “THE Defending World Champs” … I think that is a possibility, a slim one, but a possibility nonetheless … and that, at the very least, is an acceptable improvement even if it would still be a major disappointment.

All the other clubs got better while Sabevans went with the tried and true odd year approach of getting the band back together. Really though it is the suck hole that the starting pitching has become. Look at the 2015 NL pitching stats. Overall the Giants place 6th. On the outside looking in.

Reasonable analysis, as well as synopsis of what has happened in previous “unequal” seasons (good post LE).

During the off-season and spring training, did any of you think the Giants would contend this far into the season? Thought so, i.e., maybe 3 total were true believers. Last nights loss was brutal, but the Giants are still in it. Love September baseball.

      • Lisle Ellis's avatar Lisle Ellis said, on September 1, 2015 at 5:04 pm

To be honest … Yes … I think our hope of making the playoffs is very slim at this point … I am holding out that we can at least take it down to the wire and challenge either LA for the division or someone for the WC and in that manner at least better our 2011 effort as defending Champs.mi think it was third week of September in 2011 that we were finally eliminated … If we can improve that by getting it down to the last week of the season … well, I would not be happy about missing the playoffs but would be satisfied we gave it everything we had.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on September 1, 2015 at 6:11 pm

Funny thing is, I see us in the NLCS. Either way, I agree I want to see them compete all the way. And, even though we lost last night, and lost some games with the Cards and Pirates, most of those games we were very competitive in. Hell, we’ve been hanging with NL’s best while playing our bench as starters.
Yup, NLCS easy, in the WS? Why not?

  27. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 1, 2015 at 4:32 pm

I don;t really buy that, LE. I though we had a shot this year. Of course that was based on Cain being a force this year and McGeehee holding his own and the starters being fairly decent. Given that not too many teams have a ton of success playing their 3rd stringers (except the Cards, apparently) we have done a shitload better than I thought they would if you told me Pence, Pagan, and Panik would miss huge amounts of the season, and the starters Timmy, Matty, Vogie, and Huddy would basically be dogshit.

No one knew who Tomlinson, Heston, and Duffy were at the start of the year. Even Osich and the DFAed Maxwell played their part in getting this team to at least a level of play that has kept them close. Byrd and Leake are contributing wildly at this point. No, Sabes doesnt throw the big bux around, but what has that done for teams like LA and Boston?

    • Lisle Ellis's avatar Lisle Ellis said, on September 1, 2015 at 4:57 pm

Well … I ain’t really trying to sell anything here … I’m just saying that at the outset of this season I had very little inclination toward what our fate was to be … I couldn’t get a good feel for what we were putting out there … The entire starting rotation was a huge question mark, including Bum, what with all the innings he tossed last year and deep into the finals. We had Pagan coming back which seemed like a good thing. I always liked Duffy from the little I saw of him last year but wasn’t sure what McGee could bring to the picture. In a nut, the team looked pretty much like the one we had last year and that didn’t turn out too bad, did it? So, I thought: “hey, of course, we got a legit shot.”

All I’m saying, is what I really wanted more than anything beyond a dream was to see us rise to the occasion and be truly competitive and to be the Regal Defenders of our hard won World Championship … Period … Bottom line!

And, I think, so far, we have done that better than we did in 2013 and closing in on bettering our 2011 effort. So, maybe a small victory awaits but a little progress is better than any kind of step backward … but I do feel the Giants, players and management could have done better this year … And that is a bit disappointing, for me. Only speaking for myself, and I certainly would not be so presumptuous to expect you or anyone else to share my view.

really disappointed with this Maxwell release for ONE MAIN reason: it shows the team brass just had no plan. Supposedly he was the reason they DIDN’T go out and get another outfield bat at the deadline. Now that we can bring up a bunch of AAA fodder it’s cool to designate him? Lame. And I’m not a big Maxwell fan I just think his case stands for how fucked up the management of this roster has been this year. We’ve been *hoping* way too much in terms of when guys would come back. They should have fucking picked up the “Austin Jacksons” when they had the chance and if Pence came back sooner AJ (or Parra etc) would have just been a nice insurance policy. Now we’re pretending reinforcements are here but it’s just a bunch of Noonan bullshit. Really disappointed right now, it feels like Sabean and his puppet mishandled this season, roster wise.

Awesome take by BF at 5:01.
This difficulty now is all on Sabean. It’s OK. He can be criticized, and yeah, he produced 3 in 5. They both can happen. I would say most Flappers here were concerned with the starting pitching being thin coming into the season. And, the bench. Both have proved true. The worst signing of the offseason for the Giants was the non-signing of Voggy by Houston, which meant that gave Sabean an EZ opportunity to sign him again, and not work harder to get somebody better. This is a transition year. The starting rotation will be very very different next season. As it should be. Chi is right, too. Upgrade this team on the staff, and on the bench. Grabbing some dude from the RSox at the last minute instead of relying on call ups to help shows total lack of confidence in anything in the minors in the OF, as BF says, shows that using Maxwell all season was pretty much a sham. And, relying on 000 to shore up the infield is a total indictment of what’s available now in the minors after Duffy and Specs have been beamed up…

  30. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 1, 2015 at 5:11 pm

kinda cool that Bum is batting 8th but he better hit a bomb with 000 batting behind him….Seriously, I get the whole “2 leadoff hitters in a row” thing but when you bat one of your best hitters 8th and one of the worst hitters I have ever seen at this level 9th, you’re almost taking the bat out of his hands. And Adrianza is nobody’s leadoff man so the premise for the move makes zero sense tonight……

Bochy on Bumgarner hitting in front of Adrianza: “I think it speaks for itself.”

More irritation today. I have a problem with this for multiple reasons: 1) it shows Bochy doesn’t understand why you bat a pitcher 8th, at least tactically. Either that or he doesn’t care about that and he’s just batting Bum one spot in front of a shitty hitter. 2) It’s another blatant slap in the face, publicly, of a guy YOU ARE STILL PLAYING. How is he supposed to go out and not have shattered confidence with Kruk and Bochy saying this shit to the press? And 3, if he’s so bad you are taking public pot shots at him, why not consider not playing him. Fucking release him. Put ANYONE ELSE in there…..
I haven’t gotten any of the old Flavor venom going this year because frankly, as I’ve said, I just can’t really muster it up due to the 3 in 5. But this shit is starting to piss me off. We are still fans of the team, everyone in the org is still getting paid handsomely, you have to do your best or at least try your best. And I feel like all the shit I’m complaining about during the last hour is a classic example of not trying your best……

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 1, 2015 at 5:56 pm

that’s a move that makes sense. He’s putting a guy with a high OBP in the 9 spot with the goal of trying to get more dudes on base in front of LA’s best hitters. Pederson has his problems but getting on base isn’t one of them. Adrianza can’t get on base and has no place in any ML line up

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on September 1, 2015 at 6:32 pm

Sorry but while I see he’s better than ehire it’s still an insult to hit an all star behind the pitcher.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 1, 2015 at 6:36 pm

it’s not just that “he’s better than 000”. There is a reason for it. You can disagree with the tactical part of it, but there are a lot of people who think batting a high OBP guy 9th in from of another high OBP guy with your best hitters coming up is a sound move. What Bochy is doing tonight has NOTHING to do with what Two Trips is doing, at least tactically….

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on September 1, 2015 at 6:51 pm

I’m not talking about 000, I’m saying that if I was an all star who has been plummeting since the break I wouldn’t care what 2x purpose was I’d be pissed. Now maybe that’s good managing but maybe not. Hence “interesting”.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 1, 2015 at 7:00 pm

well, you did reference 000 which is why I noted it. His OBP is very good, I doubt he’s got a problem with it. Baseball players understand the move although, as I said, the 000 move behind Bum makes no sense.

  32. Lisle Ellis's avatar Lisle Ellis said, on September 1, 2015 at 5:51 pm

Playing the devil’s advocat here Flav … Is it that they really did mishandle the situation or were they frightened to give up top prospects for duds like they did with Beltran? In their defense it seems, according to the media reports we swallow like cum drunk whores, they go after some premier players … And what would be saying if they got a Lester, a Shields, or a Smardidjza (?) type player and they had the seasons they’ve had with those teams that signed them … we’d be screamin blue murder about the wasted money!

However, I must agreed most whole heartedly with your assessment of this Airhead situation … Is there a precedent in Giants history of a player being so humiliated by “team media” or a manager? I don’t know? I’m asking … does anybody know of this ever happening before with the Giants?

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 1, 2015 at 5:58 pm

I see your point but I wasn’t suggesting they give up top prospects and risk getting burned again like with Beltran. Also, I don’t think they got burned, they took a shot and it didn’t work out. A guy like Austin Jackson or Parra did not cost top prospects.

      • Lisle Ellis's avatar Lisle Ellis said, on September 1, 2015 at 6:15 pm

And I see yours … You are right … we certainly didn’t have to give up much to get Byrd, Leake or this latest dude … Yet, I seem to remember hearing that the price for Cole Hamels wasn’t cheap and the Giants weren’t willing to give what was being asked, or else we didn’t have anything they wanted. Maybe we got the better end of the deal in Byrd over Parra but, yet again, was it stinginess or cavalier behavior that resulted in us not going after a utility middle infielder and being relegated to having to endure the ineptitude of Agent 000? I tend to feel as you do … The shit was mishandled at the top.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 1, 2015 at 6:01 pm

regarding your second point, lots of guys here will tell you Belt got dragged through the mud in the press. Sorry, but no one ever called him “not a major leaguer” or said “the move speaks for itself” when asked why the pitcher is batting in front of him. Again, this is only an issue BECAUSE HE’S STILL PLAYING DAILY

Cannot be helping morale much, I’d think?

Btw, gotta run to a gig … Will attempt to check in during the game … I set my iPad up on a music stand so it looks like I’m reading music from it but I’m actually watching my AtBat app … 😉

A win tonight over Greinke would be sweet. He’s probably the front-runner for the CY at the moment, and Bum could continue to make his own case for the CY. Greinke has that outrageously low ERA. It’d be nice to stick about 5 runs on him, as hard as that would be to do.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 1, 2015 at 6:24 pm

totally agree. And I think it’s a mistake that everyone is handing Greinke the CY so early. Bum has been insane for 6 straight starts. Greinke good but not as good over the same period. Money time is NOW (although Bum sees peanuts not gold bars). Money time is not in a non Sept month, so if Bum drops another W and 12K’s on LA tonight AND he keeps doing that and the Giants win the division I think he’s got to be strongly considered over Greinke.
