Odds Shmodds
Someone told me the Giants were the favorites to win the World Series next year. That appears to be untrue. They’re 10-1. Cubs and Red Sox are 7-1 and 8-1, respectively.
Future bets are, inherently, pretty dumb. What team looks the same in the post season as it did in Spring Training?
I wonder when the last team favorite to win the WS in ST actually went and won it? Yankees in 2009?
How could you not like our chances?
In other World News Headlines…
Only 36 days until pitchers and catchers report for your San Francisco Giants.
FOUR in SEVEN!
Even Year…
Humm Baby – Let’s Do It Again!
by the way, this was the story about Uribe that the Giants apparently leaked….
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/matier-ross/article/SF-Giants-alum-Juan-Uribe-s-former-landlord-sues-2375951.php
$4,400 a month? Man, those were the days.
MIDNIGHT fish fry? WTF…
And Uribe’s fish fry shenanigans were before Pence used the term “burn it down!” This is the wrong video/speech (could not find the “burn it down” one), but this is still one of my all-time favorites:
yeah baby
Pence’s Tony Robbins act is a little worn but I still dig that speech. I think my favorite part is Sandoval popping the cork like a 6 year old.
Tony Robbins act? That’s laughable, IMO. Pence’s speech was right from the heart and filled with passion. Tony Robbins (other than knowing he is a “life coach” and motivational speaker…and I had to google that) probably used Pence’s speech to bone up his content. 😉
Pence does everything right from the heart, apparently. Remarkable guy.
I don’t feel comfortable with the Giants being favored. Being favored is a foreign country. Speaking of which, MY FIRST REPORT FROM REYKJAVIK:

More to come, God and Vikings willing.
Two great roads to learning ~ reading and roading ~ in this case, flying. One thing i noticed on the $200 Laker Skytrain overnight from LAX to London Gatwick back in ’79 is that traveling abroad can be a great way to meet fellow Yanks one probably would never have encountered otherwise. Looks like Pawlie is rediscovering his own serendipitous meet-ups.
I’m not big on odds and predictions but I’m thinking Giants/Cubs NLCS with Bochy pushing all the right buttons against the “renowned tactician” Maddon and getting some overdue respect.
To the thread – I agree…I pay no attention to the pre-season odds. I am with Pawlie, and sure as hell hope we are not favored…that goes totally against the “Giants Way” of flying under the radar.
Not that it matters with the Giants signing Span, but it looks like Parra is going to the Rockies.
Yeah Mac, supposedly Parra was looking for 3 yr deal. I like the guy, just don’t think he is every day 500 AB player.
Rox already have some LH OFs, so speculation was someone was going to be traded.
Off topic side note: just read an opinion piece (and some comments) on WashPost from a constitutional historian gal who gives the legal opinion Ted Cruz is NOT eligible to be president. Distinction is made between being a citizen and a natural born one, and only the latter can be POTUS according to Constitution.
Thoughts from Flap lawyer contingent?
The natural born citizen clause is an antique, like the 3/5 person clause but not as mortifying. Right after the Revolution it made some sense to ensure that no one born British could be President. (Common at that time. Alexander Hamilton was born in a British Caribbean colony.) Mitt Romney’s father George was born in a Mormon settlement in Mexico and he nearly won the Republican nomination for President in 68. McCain, the Panama Canal Zone. Bruce Bochy, France. His father was a sergeant in the army. If anyone has the right to run for President . . . .
Monte Irvin. RIP.
A huge figure in Giants history.
Willie kept in touch with him.
Just got a text from a friend telling me that Monte Irvin has passed. He was 96.
I remember when the Giants sent a contingent to give him his World Series ring, as he could not travel.
RIP number 20.
Mays said at the trophy gig that Irvin would’ve gone before ’42’ except he was in the army.
Just saw that. RIP Mr Irving.
On a side note, Bruce Bochy for president!
Next installment; g’night
hold off; I will add a pic or two to that post

Mentor to #24 and to other Black American Giants as they came to the team and later for many across MLB as he went to work for the leagues; Monte Irvin was one of the few Giants names i knew at the age of 10 when the NY Giants won their last world service. Haven’t checked them in year, but i do have a baseball card for the 4th Afro-American player to be inducted into the HOF. Year of the card would be ’55 or ’56, years in which i bought just a handful.
Though he plays Willie’s CF position rather than Monte’s LF, Denard Span will be Irvin’s heir on this year’s squad. MLB needs to do more, like a lot of financial assistance to BB programs in the Deep South where many BB stars have come from. Too many talented Black youth are seduced by the religion of football and the razmatazz of basketball. Baseball needs to focus on that talent pool. I believe Monte Irvin would approve of that message.
Interesting Freudian: “World Series”, not “World Service”. Current wordpress arrangement is not amenable to editing one’s full statement.
Belt and Kontos file for arbitration. Wonder how Belt feels about that arb-years buyout deal the Giants made with Crawford. All too easy to imagine him walking around with his head and shoulders down. Maybe the Giants will give him a boost.
If I’m Belt, I’m stickin’ it to the Giants as much as possible, and negotiating hard. They’ve screwed with him so much, there’s no way he should be Mr. Nice Guy when it comes to money — of which they’ve got a lot…

Yasiel Puig is sitting in what looks like Jack Nicholson’s courtside seat, and I’m not sure he has looked up from his phone for 5 minutes.
