Opening Day
So today, the Dodgers have to actually play a team that’s conscious. That will be a new thing for them after what they’ve been doing the last 3 days. I don’t even know who’s managing the Padres these days but whoever it is did not have his team prepared to play baseball this year.
Alex Wood is just a guy, and if anyone is gonna be focused up and geeked out of his mind for an opening day start it’s Peavy. I’m a little worried about this flu bug+flight+no rest but whatever, it’s baseball it’s not like they’re running a marathon.
Another game I have to follow on gamecast. Anyone going?
Opening Day. Nothing like it.
At 30 degrees, grey as goosedown and about an inch of fresh white shit on the ground, i should be envious about any Flapper attending the Opening tonight. Oh well, the heartland of the continent has been having the most yo-yo couple of seasons i have ever experienced, with a steady stream of ups and downs. Sposta be 60 a week from today. I’ll take it. Meanwhile, enjoy the game and may the good guys win.
Same boat here in Virginia…need to hit the links instead of a day of rain but at least we will see the sunshine out there…Go Giants. Would have been nice to have swept the brew crew, buy I will take it ..
So the Pads open the year scoringZERO runs in their first series?
Wow.
at home, no less. I had to google who their manager is since I know they canned Bud Black. Someone named Andy Green. I have never heard of him.
I did the same thing last night. Never heard of him.
I’ll be close by but not going. Might take a late lunch and try to get in.
Chi will be at the yard, but I can’t remember what other Flappers.
I think Chi and Sarge are both going. Their meeting up beforehand for a cold one. Lucky bastards.
Maeda is the size of Lincecum, so I was curious what pitch he hit for an HR. Cashner threw him a hanging slider, right down the middle. A slow-spinning cement-mixer, on a batting practice tee.
What an overall horrible effort from the Padres in those three games.
Worst part is that while being pussovers for the LaBumbos they always seem to play the Giants hard. We may be looking at yet another season where LA dominates the other 3 in the division while SF merely generally beats them. So it may be up to the other teams in the NL to even the score.
Yeah, for whatever reason, maybe the big names and contracts the Dodgers tend to have, those other 3 NL teams seem to be intimidated by the Dodgers. It’s like they lose before the games even start. The Giants, on the other hand, on a year by year basis, tend to play the Dodgers very even. The Giants just are not intimidated like that, by the Dodgers. The Giants might lose 10-0 one day, but win 4-3 the next day, just like the last two games of the ’14 World Series. The Giants are so even-keel under Bochy’s leadership.
The Beat L.A. lineup:
Span CF
Panik 2B
Posey C
Pence RF
Belt 1B
Duffy 3B
Crawford SS
Peavy RHP
Pagan LF
Opening frickin day! On BART heading over to the city, and there are a ton of people rocking gear. Would have lived the weather we had yesterday out at the yard today. But a high of 65 is still a nice day out. For all the Flappers who are stuck in cooler locales, I feel your pain.
As far as the actual game, I’m not sure how I feel about Peavy he has me nervous. Although, I don’t know how he did in spring. But he’s a veteran and I expect him to be ready.
I’ll be in a bar in the financial district about 3:00. Irish Times . . .
Yeah, Peavy will probably be a question mark as the season goes on, re: can he actually perform well for more than 5 innings, and can he last thru the dog days of summer, but gotta love his stats as a Dodger killer (14-3 with a 2.38 ERA lifetime). I’ll take those odds. Media will be jib-jabbering about LA having not yet allowed a run. Would love to see the G’s put up a crooked number in the first inning to shut up that crap…
Crooked number sounds like the perfect remedy for Padretitis.
Wood has been the epitome of the .500 pitcher in his career, 26-26, and 4-5 last season for the Dodgers. He’s kind of a gimmick pitcher. He has a strange violent wind-up that can make it difficult for the batters to see the ball coming from his hand. But he does get lit up his fair share of times.
I was surprised the Braves dealt him to the Dodgers. I thought he was one of the guys they were going to build around, but the Braves seemed to give up on him as a top of the rotation guy. He’s too inconsistent. And maybe they felt that his delivery is going to blow up his arm in the near future.
Peavey’s usually a pretty quick starter. 23-16 in April, anyway.
His last ST start he gave up 0 runs and 2 hits in 5 innings.
It was the A’s, though.
Ernie Els 7 putted from 3 feet on the FIRST hole at the Masters. #RealHardToWatch
Holy shit! I just saw that! Looked like an April fools joke where someone cellophanes the hole. Nice way to take the pressure off oneself for the rest of the weekend…
Gotta love that it’s the stinkin Dodgers. Here we go.
…and Chuck—your call on Cody Gearrin looking like Clockwork Orange guy was pure gold!
Hah! Didn’t see him pitch in spring. Dude looks certifiable . . .
Jesus. I’ve gurked a few holes in my day, but never this bad.
https://t.co/fCYvPKumy9
I had to watch it twice, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I remember John Daly once did something similar but not from this close.
4 pitch inning?
How does Krug and Kuip argue about running out of the box on the way to first???
Hey All .. Lisle here, weighing in with my new moniker “bassbaldy” … I suppose I could have been “oldbaldbaseballlovingbassplayer” but that seemed a bit much, even for me. Anyway, just wanted to say – and I know, I know, it’s way too early for such a concern – I feel like yesterday’s game was completely winable for us. Loses are cumulative. At the end of the season, if we loose the division or miss the playoffs by 5 or six games, its these types of loses that we will look back on. Samsoso, our new pitcher, not only failing to get the bunt down but bunting into a DP … Come on! I heard Span was fluish but Bloch prob held him back because he needed some semblance off power off the bench .. Fittingly, 000 was the final out.
I’m gonna let Loo handle the feedback on this one.
Shit, tthe Dodgers aren’t taking any pitches.
ruh roh
Fuck. They are jumping on every first pitch.
Got a fricking meeting. This better get better!
Fer chrissakes, now another run after the replay.
Special Thanks! to Flav & Chi for the warm welcome messages … feelin’ warm & fuzzy …GO GIANTS!
.. I can’t watch … Really, I can’t watch, or listen .. busy, busy day .. seems like that may be a good thing. We getting clobbered?
Fuck. Gamecast is annoying. Missed the overturn and now another run?
Where’s the Goddamn offense?
What’s happen in in the game … can I get a brief update?
Peavy sucks.
Giants down 4-0, and it seems worse. Peavy getting tattooed.
I appreciate Peavy’s contribution in 2014, but I don’t think we’re going to get much out of him this year.
He’ll be a strong candidate for the phantom DL.
Tell me something I don’t know 😉 .. Thanks tho! … Chuck seems to intimate we don’t have any offense either .. We scoring any runs? No pitching + No offense is a bad combo, as we all know only too well.
We’ve had a few runners. Belt had a 2 out double. 3 hits total, though.
Crawfish leads off with a walk.. Specs pinch hitting.
Base hit
And the Dodgers staff is human.
Fuck oh dear! Sounds like we are doing a pretty good Impersonation of the SD Child Molesters!
It’s now 4-3!
Panik Triple! 2 runs score . . .
Posey doubles! 4-3 Dogs
. . .
Pitching around Pence. Wild pitch on last one!
What inning?
Bottom 6th.
Nice shut-down inning by Heston.
Going to the bottom of the 6th, down 4-3.
Duffster with a basehit. one on no outs
Need to rake this guy while he’s still in.
Crawfish with a base hit. 000 batting for Moses.
Can’t remember who came up with it, but I always liked Bright Eyes.
Salute! Pagan 2-run single to RF, Giants lead 5-4!
5-4 Giants!! Crazy Horse with a 2 run single!
Love seeing all the exclamation points here, always a good sign… !!!!! 🙂
Panik hits one in front of CFer, Pagan scores, 6-4!
Panik!!! Base hit!!! 6-4 Giants!!!!!!
Posey RBI single to LF, 7-4!
Yowza!!! Buster with a base hit! 7-4 Giants!!
Hey Bums, this ain’t the fuckin’ Pads!
Yeah you right, Mac.
Conga line!
Oh Wholly Bejeezus’ Mullet !!!!!!! Oh Happy Day!
Javy Lopez gets out Utley. Some things never change.
Nice bounce-back for Lopez today. He’ll be feeling much better.
Good one. Shades of 2010, huh… 🙂
Giants up 7-6 going to bottom 8th.
Wha happened to 7-4? Who gave Bums 2 more?
Romo served up 2-run HR to Pederson.
Of course he did … Fucker! Thx Mac!
Panik RBI single to RF, Giants 8-6!
I tell ya, that kid’s gonna be a superstar .. Soooo clutch!
Even some of his outs have been hard-hit line-drives.
Hunter!!!
Ya want exclamation points?
PENCE GRAND SLAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GIANTS 12-6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Great balls o’ fire!!!
Pence over the Fence (!)
What a huge momentum shift this will be. The Dodgers with a historic opening series only to come north and get the wind knocked out of ’em!
With a 4-0 lead no less
Very nice 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍👍👍
Man, what a day at the yard for Chi & Sarge.
Pence just established that he can be a real four-spot hitter. Slow start to the season, but just in time now. Romo gave up his HR to a left hand batter. Surprise. Anyway, let’s shut down the bums and celebrate opening day.
Back in high school in NJ, my Bridgewater gang would play baseball games against the neighboring Raritan gang, good fun. One time I remember we were just sucking balls and getting our asses kicked .. and finally around the 5th inning, we just exploded for about 30 runs. My gf at the time quietly quipped, “Finally, the drugs kicked in”…… haha. So true. Not that I would think the G’s are doing anything like that…. (!)
Was Bridgewater-Raritan HS around back then?
The other Hunter K’s Puig to end it — GIANTS WIN!!!
That is how you do opening day at home !!!
Mac, I went to Bridgewater-Raritan HS West. They added a BRHS East at some point. Now there’s just the one HS (what was West, now East is a middle school or something)….
Ah, right, I do seem to remember the East-West thing.
Yeah, they changed the zoning at some point, so my sister and I went to West but my younger brother went to East. Didn’t really matter, school pride wasn’t all that big in the mid-70s…………… ) (!)
And there’s a Raritan HS about 30 miles to the south.
Puig feasted on the pods; came into today’s game over .500 with a 1.700 OPS or something like that. Nice to see Strickland humiliate him at the end. We’ve got a helluva team this year.
Like Mac said: “Hey Bums, this ain’t the fuckin’ Pads!”
Great Opener and comeback.
Wow! What a freakin perfect day/home opener/ending … Hollywood couldn’t of scripted it much better! Huge congrats & thanks to Chi & Sarge’s juju combo for being there & making it happen!
MacDog…Bright Eyes for Heston was from yours truly…
Excellent — and he got the win!
TOTO !!! I don’t thing we’re in San Diego any more.
Dodgers finally solved Peavy. They must have still been riding their Dago high, figuring they were the certified, guaranteed cock of the walk. And here comes Wood n tit be wonderful shutting down the Gigantes for 4 innings on a mere 3 hits. Zumiee noted before the game awhile that with his crazy delivery, Wood can sometimes throw an opponent for a bit of a loop. Sure nuff. My thought was that maybe by the second time through the lineup, he might need to watch out. I mean we are not talking vintage Timmy here.
Conga line brings the Giants to within a run in the fifth and then adds 4 in the 6th and suddenly the game changes flavors. Yup, this bunch will soon become known as the most dangerous lineup in the league. and whadda ya know, we even got us a nice, choice Salami in the 8th, with Pence going over the fence with the pond full of ducks. SF is not likely to compete in dingers with the bandbox teams, but oh, that conga line chorus.
Perhaps the biggest disparity between the two teams got aired out a bit today as well. That LaBumbo bullpen looks porous. Giants bullies overmatches them. So does our defense.
Now let’s see Cain get back on his game tomorrow and then we’ll see which team belongs in 1st place in the NL West.
