Perspective
In a couple of months, I want Lisle to break out that shorthand/journal thing that he’s furiously scribbling in and remind us of the darkest time of the year. Because this is it. And we shouldn’t overreact to it, just as we shouldn’t have expected the Giants to average scoring 8 runs a game as they did earlier this year.
Bad stretch. Bad week. I think Buster is hurt, there’s a direct line you can draw from his foot getting hit to the slump he’s in right now.
The important thing to remember>>>>>>
this too shall pass…….
Appreciate your taking the long-term view, Flav. Couple good things to take from the debacle. One: Another well pitched game from Bumgarner. One bad pitch with a runner on was the difference in the game: Two: Duffy’s bat seems to be coming around. Our new stopper pitches today. C’mon Cueto. Let’s go Giants.
Perspective is very important. Giants ran into 2 very good pitching exploits and bats didn’t respond, other than couple hits from Duffy, rbi from Pagan and Blanco triple. Flav might be onto something about Posey who hasn’t hit the ball with much authority in a while…only couple XBH all season.
Bum threw a great game himself, and again 1 bad pitch dooms them.
Away from Dbax park I think Greinke is still gonna be pretty dang good, lot like last night.
Belt anonymous, good one Blade. He had rough night at clean up for Pence too, undeserved K, then couple others and a ground out hit well but right into the shift. Still like to see him hit the ball harder to LF/LCF.
Totally honest, I stick up for him but I’m really surprised Giants are paying him $16 mil after next year. F/G (who love the WAR stat) writer said he actually might have sold himself short on the deal (!)…try and say that one without blinking an eye at your next meeting.
RE: Belt and getting 16 mil after next year, I actually thought maybe the Giants overpaid a bit. But the “average per year” works out to 13.1 mil, and when we were kicking the tires on this subject before he inked the deal, I was saying I would go 12-13 per. As long as he does not fall into an abyss of suckage, I think it will be a good deal for the Giants, and Belt will be set for life.
Was flipping back and forth to Sharks game last night, very intense and nice home W over LA.
Randy Hahn is a fine announcer, and the way he gets fired up over a goal is just great. The other guys with him including down at ice level are OK but the guy they used to have as his partner, Drew Remenda, was really fun to listen to.
He took the full snarkk approach, calling out the players and the team (and officials) for subpar play and poor decisions right on the air as stuff happened and not backing down from it. K and K he ain’t.
Which of course, likely cost him his job.
Yep. I miss Remenda calling the Sharks games. He still drops-in on Tolbert’s show occasionally. I still like listening to him talk hockey.
As James noted last night, Giants had been on unreal pace for offense—they are still 4th in league for runs scored and 3rd in HRs. Most of the regulars are around 1 XBH per 9-10 ABs, with couple notable exceptions.
Those are:
Span at 4 in 60 (to go with .299 OB, ugh)
Posey 3 in 51
Pence 2 in 58
Hopefully day game gets everyone fired up day after 4/20.
Curious with all the Sharks failures come playoff time if Randy Hahn decided not to go with the beard hoping it will help?
Are his wife Roberta Gonzalez (weather gal ) said lose the beard or lose the sex..
Drew Remenda and his partner Dick Fromunda.
The long view is all wel and good, but there ARE times I wish Bochy was a little more fluid with his lineups. He did sit Pence, who is on a negative tear, but i really wish he’d do something with Span. He’s swings at a pitch that bounced 5′ in front of home plate for strike 3. OBP under .300.
Sit him a day or drop him in the lineup. Pagan is the only guy hitting thorough most of this yet he’s wasted in the 9 hole.
And let’s lose the pitcher-in-the-8-hole deal already.
You want to call Bochy, Charlie, of you want me to give him a ring?
I was hoping to get his number when my wife put George Kontos and Gregor Blanco into housing. We put one of our extra phones in Gregor’s place and I tried to get the incoming calls from it, but they were erased!
lulz!
Good post, Flav. Spot on. This too shall pass.
I went back and caught up on the late comments last night.
To Blade’s comment of me doubting DuffMan. Nope. I said a week or so ago when someone mentioned his sucktitude, that he has historically been a slow starter. He sucked last April, but rest of the year hit .300, or near it. Also on Duffy, I had said that if he did not pan out as we had hoped, that I could see moving him to Tomlinson’s “super-sub” role, and let Arroyo slide into the 3rd base position (Giants seem to be grooming Arroyo to play 3rd). Flip-side of that is there is no guarantee that Arroyo will be a stud at the ML level, either. I have total confidence in Duffy…kid is a ballplayer.
Regarding Bum losing some zip on his pitches. I am not going to trip on that until it has happened over a significant portion of the season. There have been multiple instances over the past few years where he went through spells of losing a bit of velocity, and it ended up being a mechanics issue. So, no, I will not rush to pass judgment on Big Country.
And I do get what you are saying Craig, and agree, but fuck it sucks to lose three close games to the fucking Skanky Snakes. It is WAY TOO EARLY to be looking for ledges.
Hoping the Dreadlock Dandy can help right the ship today!
Yep Willie, those stats are putrid for the winsome threesome . . . Seriously, I am most surprised by Span – he of the lifetime .351 OPS. He had a modest 5 game hitting streak (April 10-16), so I am not too worried about him. Same with Posey (as Flav said, he is probably playing hurt – so he gets a pass).
Pence? Dunno what his excuse is? Old age? Don’t laugh . . . He just turned 33. With that unorthodox swing; gangly 6’4″ frame; and not playing last year – this could be the start of him going downhill.
Couple that with his new bride wanting him to join her in being YouTube stars . . . umm, Pence might be the position player to be most worried about.
* Chi, no worries . . . I went through quite a few threads and was amazed at how many were questioning Duff’s skills. Along with Panik and Pagan, he is my favorite Giants player. I also agree with WilcoJoe that Panik has a good chance to exceed Posey’s numbers. Just my opinion.
NP re: Duffster. You have an awesome eye for talent, Blade. The three you mention are my favorites, too (you know I have always backed Caballo Loco when everyone was ragging on his ass). Panik has become my favorite. I really like that kid. If he stays healthy (and I know I say this a lot) the kid will win at least one batting title. I just love his composure both at 2nd and especially at the plate.
Lastly, we need to talk some specifics for our “Trip to Mecca.” I want to start dialing in some of the details (specific games and getting tickets, reserving places to stay – I found one that looks really good in Boston, and getting my airfare booked). I will give ya a shout tonight or over the weekend.
Give you a call this evening?
Yep. You have my number, correct?
I get the Giants weren’t going to keep up the insane scoring pace. The only problem is there have been three games during this miserable stretch where they scored a combined 19 runs — and lost all three games. I know it’s way too early, but right now this team stinks in every which way.
And Flav’s probably right about Posey, although that can’t be a good thing either.
Another one goes too soon. Prince dead at age 57.
Prince may be dead..wow
kind of takes the air out of the news that I finally cashed in last night on Fan Duel….$5…
Tell me about it. I have had two close calls with potential big cash days this week on DraftKings. Sunday I was in the top 20 on a 9500 entry tourney until the Giants-Doghairs dropped me to a $40 finish. Yesterday, Rizzo gets robbed of a home run in the first inning, that would have won me $2000 when it was all said and done. Ended up winning another $40. It’s amazing how one base hit can drop you a few hundred bucks in some of those tournaments.
Wow. 57 years old. Not a huge fan but he was very influential and a major force in music.
He kinda picked up where Jimi Hendrix left off in the style aspect of rock stardom. But he controlled his image much better, and controlled the outside bs better as well. Hell of a guitar player too.
Bad year to be a rock star I guess. They are dropping everywhere.
not a huge fan either but growing up in SJ in a minority-majority high school in the early 80s…Prince was frickin HUUUGEEEE!
Oh man, another one gone way too soon. You couldn’t turn on the radio in ’84 without hearing “When Doves Cry.”
Prince also had one of the greatest if not the greatest Super Bowl halftime performances. Playing Purple Rain in an epic downpour, as he shredded on that guitar. That was unforgettable.
That was the best Super Bowl halftime show ever, IMO.
This is shocking news about Prince. Very sad. And so many other great musicians lost this year already.
Prince gone … Damn! I’m devastated. A friend of mine played in his ‘New Power Generation’ band. She is an amazing guitarist in her own right, but Prince was something else, Another friend got to play at one his Paisley Park events and meet him. Everyone gushed about the generosity of his spirit.
His fusion of the most salient aspects of Motown, Rock, Gospel, Jazz and just about every other musical genre know to mankind was of unprecedented genius. I look back on the old 80’s clips and the hair styles and clothes look a bit silly and dated but the music, oh man, the MUSIC. … no words.
Anyone know what channel the game is on? Regular channel is saying it is blacked out???
The schedule on the Giants website says CSN-BA.
I think that is the regular affiliate Mac, which I already tried (channel 686). Thanks anyway 🙂
The story goes that the day of SBXLI NFL productions was worried about the downpour. They contacted Prince to make sure he was good to go since it was coming down so hard. In true rock star fashion Prince responds with “Can you make it rain harder?”. Then he went out and killed it. He was an amazing talent. RIP…
Yeah whenever I read about someone who dies so young it makes me want to call my doctor to get a physical. So sad. His Purple Rain had some of the best guitar playing.
The season is far from over, better to have slumps now than in October. This team is too good to continue losing, they will right this ship.
I agree, Kevin. But when you lose three close games like this to the fucking DBacks, it fucking hurts! Johnny C gets us back in the W column today. Book it!
Yeah it sucks!!
Holy shit. Prince gone. Like others, I was not a big fan of his stuff (certainly liked some of it), but respected him as a huge influence in the music industry. This has to be the worst year ever in regards to losing so many talented music folks. RIP.
On a somber note, here is today’s Gigante line-up:
1. Denard Span (L) CF
2. Joe Panik (L) 2B
3. Hunter Pence (R) RF
4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
6. Angel Pagan (S) LF
7. Matt Duffy (R) 3B
8. Trevor Brown (R) C
9. Johnny Cueto (R) P
Not sure if Posey is getting a day off, or if the toe is bothering him. No pitcher in the 8 hole, but Span still leading off. Pagan moving up in the order, too.
GO GIANTS! We cannot get swept by these fuckers!
I’m thinking Duff should be moved back up in the order, maybe swap Span & Pagan’s spots.
Frustrating Braves loss to the Dodgers, 11 hits — including 10 off Kershaw — but only 1 run.
Similar in way to what we are experiencing.
Fuck the Dodgers!
Craig – how about an updated BBOTD to change the team’s mojo? Not that I am superstitious, or anything…
done.
Jeez…come on…already down 1 zip. And Miller has a 7-something ERA. Our boys need to wake the fuck up and tattoo him!
Damn! The way this game is starting…I’m not sure I can stomach listening to it. Thank goodness I have a meeting coming up…maybe I will come back and the Giants will surprise the hell outta me with a conga line shuffle and a barrage of runs!
Jesus. Bases full, no outs. Only good thing was going to Rogue and drinking lunch.
At least get a hit this inning.
Come on, Flem. Yer killing me.
Blade, if you were asking about DirecTV, the channel is 696.
Yeah, I eventually figured it out. Thanks Zum 🙂
Fuck. We can’t keep a lead or a tie.
1-8??? LOB LOB LOB
5 fucking walks?
Four gamed at home by the fucking Diamondbacks…?
Vida Blue is feeling like a genius right now; he picked the D-Backs to win the division. I still think they’ll finish 3rd, though.
Later on, when y’all have time, this is a nice little video about Prince’s Super Bowl half-time performance:
Wagner stole strike one on both Pagan and Duffy by throwing a curveball on the first pitch. Both of them took the pitch. Theoretically, it shouldn’t be that easy for a pitcher to get strike one.
Yeah, this is good to get out of the way early, but holy fuck, I’m getting pissed. I don’t care how many runs they scored early this month. They are sucking long and hard now at the plate. 1-8 and lob lob lob.
If AZ pitches this well against the rest of the world as they did against us, they will go far.
Uh oh. Here comes Strychnine…
I hope the D-Backs retaliate, we need a baserunner.
Now it’s just getting ugly.
Seriously?
Choo Choo! Train wreck a coming . . .
Remember him?
Vaguely Loo. I was 7 years old.
The D-backs victory is segura…
I wish Peralta would’ve charged Oshits. He had every right to, and it mighta woke us up….
At this point I’d be happy if Belt charges Oshit.
Vida wasn’t the only one picking these guys to take the west.
You know what they say. You can’t win the pennant in April, but you can sure lose it.
Sure, it isn’t over by a long shot, but there are no signs of life on this team. Losing to division foes is doubly painful and damaging.
I guess that first week was all smoke & mirrors?
I don’t know anything at this point. This is God awful. 1-8 with a bullet.
Is Pence feeling his age? Is Posey hurt more than he’s letting on? Is Span washed up? Will Belt ever gain some consistency?
Panik is doing fine, as are Duffy now, and Pagan is still doing fine. The rest is varying stages of dogshit. 2, 1, and 0 in the last 3. We scored 7 but lost.
Got the Dubs tonight to look forward to.
Sign o’ the Times.
Gotta say, I’m getting a little fed with all this business of resting certain guys … Eg. Where the fuck is Posey today? We are on the brink, of getting swept, at home, by a division rival. We need to field are absolute best players at time like this!
Pfffttt!
So well done!
To the power of Aleph!
Pole-smoking at it’s finest…
Posey might be hurt. Span is a black hole at this point. He’s doing no good leading off. Sit him or drop him. Go Pagan, Craw Panik, Posey . . . I’m tired of Pagan being wasted at 9.
Those white hairs in Span’s beard might mean something…
Quick snack after Giants and before Rangers-Penguins:
One pint Guinness
1 Valium (10 mg.)
2 chewable baby aspirin
Pagan coming back to Earth..
Belt with another Ofer.
Gearrin was like Exxon 91 Premium Octane.
If walks were homeruns, we would be in 1st.
Shit, that’s my breakfast.
Best take away for me was the turn around Duff has made … Man, he may not be 100% on, but he sure the fuck did a good 340 degree flip the past couple /few games … Quite impressive for such a young player.
Oops , maybe I meant 140 degree flip … Hmm.
Keep trying…
Well, I didn’t want to go to 180 ’cause I don’t think he quite there yet … But he’s close, don’t ya think?
Good point, bb…
Love that!
Hey Flav .. If your are monitoring this .. You asked about issues with the site the other day … FYI, I’m having hella issues signing in with WordPress (my new moniker is with a WP account). In order to post, I sign in, compose, copy my text, hit ‘post comment’, get a message I need to sign in – which I already did, then hit back button, and see the grayed our ‘post comment button’, then hit refresh, paste my text, hit ‘post again’ .. Then it will work … Then it usually keeps me signed in unless I open another web page but often it will kick me off immediately after I post one comment. It’s a real pain in he ass and can, at times, take me up to five minutes per post. Then Im relegated to rushing to write so I can keep current with the discussion. Any suggestions? Anyone?
For example .. I rushed my 4:09 but it let me do the 4:10. The I tried to post the 4:19 at about 4:13 but it kicked me off .. It took 6 mins to get it up at 4:19 … Then it gave me the 4:20 right after but not sure if it will give this one.
Any one else having similar issues? I’m on an iPad 3
I had not heard of that problem before, bb. Hang in there. Maybe it’s a temporary thing.
Almost like a high performance car misfiring. Some good things going on (Cueto, most of the relievers not named Gearrin, Duffy), but can’t put it all together.
Perfect analogy Blade! That is it exactly!
We got dirty plugs .. Or were flooding it!
Yep . . . Need PepBoys.
Lisle– I wonder if there’s a box you need to click or unclick. There shouldn’t be any issues with the site, it was down for an hour this morning but everything is straightened out now.
Whe you say box to click, do you mean at my WP account page or, the settings on my iPad .. Or may be you are referring to a box some where else? … Batters box? Uh ;(
Is this rock bottom yet, or we still stuck in the muck?
I had that happen a while back. You had to enter your email addy, then your pw, then you’d get sent to another screen to confirm your pw. It still happens once in a while.
Can you clear your browser cache.
that’s a good idea. Also, I almost always use a chromebook or a desktop usually, never an iPad. Not sure if that has anything to do with your login problems. I hate iPads they are so glitchy and you can’t type for shit on them. Just for surfing the net, I think Chromebook is significantly superior.
That is a good idea. thanks Chuck I will try it. New devices are not in my budget at present, so that won’t be happening. I’m fine with the iPad for most everything I use it for, no complaints in general. I never had these issues when I was signing in on FB. And this has only been going pretty much since I set up the WP account. Unbelievable the amount flaming hoops they are making me jump through.
And there ya go a good example of the inconsistency of how it is messing with me. 5:31 was the time of my last post, an hour and a half ago. In 90 mins it didn’t kick me off but I also didn’t leave the Flap site. Sometimes it’s like that, other times I can barely get one post up before I’m tossed out on my ass.
This rigmarole is most frustrating when I’m switching back the between the AtBat App and the
Flap feed. That is how I ‘watch’ most games. I don’t have TV possibility for the most part.
I could got this response up quicker but the wife had a sudden ‘honey do’ inspiration.
Arrieta with a no-no thru 8.
stupid ass espn is showing some dumbass football preview program
MLBN is showing it.
I didn’t anticipate this even year thing would come to mean, we can’t even beat the Diamondbacks.
Yeah, losing 4 at home to anyone, anytime is hard to swallow. Especially when 2 games were Bum & Cueto!
The Cubs are pretty good.
The Reds are also horrible.
I’m at a Wingstop in EPA watching Warrior game. Snarkk is probably watching it somewhere drinking an IPA with a big titted waitress serving him.
NY Times interview excerpt with Donald Trump talking about “winning.”
“On how the past year has turned out for him: A couple of people who know me actually said, “Be careful what you wish for.” It was very interesting. It was a compliment. Well, they understand that I win. My life is winning. I win. I know how to win. Most people don’t know how to win. In golf, in sports, in life — I win, always. Better knock on wood. [Knocks on his desk.]”
Maybe the Giants brass should contact him or Charlie Sheen – another expert on “winning.”
I kid . . . I kid.
Well, the World Series bound Astros are 5-11…
Harden falls down and the whistles blow. Jesus. Why does he get every single call?
The Dubs are mailing this one in.
They could easily still win this
Only down 6 after 3Q.
Oh yeah. They should be down 25. They just look disoriented out there. Getting killed on the glass. They should be taking it to Howard. Houston isn’t that good defensively and we’re making them look good by missing easy shots.
Fuck these refs. If that was Harden, that’s a flagrant 1.
Well, they gave one back.
That quote from Trump that Blade posted is the quote of someone who must never be put in charge of the military. It’s the quote of a sociopath.
Draymond Green makes some of the worst fucking passes I’ve every seen, absolute playground, clown shit. For as good an assist maker as he is, he’ll make 2-3 plays in a row where he just throws the ball away. He can be incredibly frustrating at times.
Was that one of them?
Yup, as if on cue.
Huge shot by Iggy.
The Rockets don’t even try to play defense. They epetemize everything that I hate about the NBA.
