A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Perspective

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 21, 2016

In a couple of months, I want Lisle to break out that shorthand/journal thing that he’s furiously scribbling in and remind us of the darkest time of the year. Because this is it. And we shouldn’t overreact to it, just as we shouldn’t have expected the Giants to average scoring 8 runs a game as they did earlier this year.

Bad stretch. Bad week. I think Buster is hurt, there’s a direct line you can draw from his foot getting hit to the slump he’s in right now.

The important thing to remember>>>>>>

this too shall pass…….

Appreciate your taking the long-term view, Flav. Couple good things to take from the debacle. One: Another well pitched game from Bumgarner. One bad pitch with a runner on was the difference in the game: Two: Duffy’s bat seems to be coming around. Our new stopper pitches today. C’mon Cueto. Let’s go Giants.

  2. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 21, 2016 at 8:01 am

Perspective is very important. Giants ran into 2 very good pitching exploits and bats didn’t respond, other than couple hits from Duffy, rbi from Pagan and Blanco triple. Flav might be onto something about Posey who hasn’t hit the ball with much authority in a while…only couple XBH all season.
Bum threw a great game himself, and again 1 bad pitch dooms them.
Away from Dbax park I think Greinke is still gonna be pretty dang good, lot like last night.

Belt anonymous, good one Blade. He had rough night at clean up for Pence too, undeserved K, then couple others and a ground out hit well but right into the shift. Still like to see him hit the ball harder to LF/LCF.

Totally honest, I stick up for him but I’m really surprised Giants are paying him $16 mil after next year. F/G (who love the WAR stat) writer said he actually might have sold himself short on the deal (!)…try and say that one without blinking an eye at your next meeting.

RE: Belt and getting 16 mil after next year, I actually thought maybe the Giants overpaid a bit. But the “average per year” works out to 13.1 mil, and when we were kicking the tires on this subject before he inked the deal, I was saying I would go 12-13 per. As long as he does not fall into an abyss of suckage, I think it will be a good deal for the Giants, and Belt will be set for life.

Was flipping back and forth to Sharks game last night, very intense and nice home W over LA.

Randy Hahn is a fine announcer, and the way he gets fired up over a goal is just great. The other guys with him including down at ice level are OK but the guy they used to have as his partner, Drew Remenda, was really fun to listen to.
He took the full snarkk approach, calling out the players and the team (and officials) for subpar play and poor decisions right on the air as stuff happened and not backing down from it. K and K he ain’t.
Which of course, likely cost him his job.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 21, 2016 at 9:09 am

Yep. I miss Remenda calling the Sharks games. He still drops-in on Tolbert’s show occasionally. I still like listening to him talk hockey.

As James noted last night, Giants had been on unreal pace for offense—they are still 4th in league for runs scored and 3rd in HRs. Most of the regulars are around 1 XBH per 9-10 ABs, with couple notable exceptions.
    Those are:
Span at 4 in 60 (to go with .299 OB, ugh)
    Posey 3 in 51
    Pence 2 in 58

Hopefully day game gets everyone fired up day after 4/20.

Curious with all the Sharks failures come playoff time if Randy Hahn decided not to go with the beard hoping it will help?
Are his wife Roberta Gonzalez (weather gal ) said lose the beard or lose the sex..

Drew Remenda and his partner Dick Fromunda.

The long view is all wel and good, but there ARE times I wish Bochy was a little more fluid with his lineups. He did sit Pence, who is on a negative tear, but i really wish he’d do something with Span. He’s swings at a pitch that bounced 5′ in front of home plate for strike 3. OBP under .300.

Sit him a day or drop him in the lineup. Pagan is the only guy hitting thorough most of this yet he’s wasted in the 9 hole.

And let’s lose the pitcher-in-the-8-hole deal already.

Good post, Flav. Spot on. This too shall pass.

I went back and caught up on the late comments last night.

To Blade’s comment of me doubting DuffMan. Nope. I said a week or so ago when someone mentioned his sucktitude, that he has historically been a slow starter. He sucked last April, but rest of the year hit .300, or near it. Also on Duffy, I had said that if he did not pan out as we had hoped, that I could see moving him to Tomlinson’s “super-sub” role, and let Arroyo slide into the 3rd base position (Giants seem to be grooming Arroyo to play 3rd). Flip-side of that is there is no guarantee that Arroyo will be a stud at the ML level, either. I have total confidence in Duffy…kid is a ballplayer.

Regarding Bum losing some zip on his pitches. I am not going to trip on that until it has happened over a significant portion of the season. There have been multiple instances over the past few years where he went through spells of losing a bit of velocity, and it ended up being a mechanics issue. So, no, I will not rush to pass judgment on Big Country.

And I do get what you are saying Craig, and agree, but fuck it sucks to lose three close games to the fucking Skanky Snakes. It is WAY TOO EARLY to be looking for ledges.

Hoping the Dreadlock Dandy can help right the ship today!

  8. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 21, 2016 at 8:53 am

Yep Willie, those stats are putrid for the winsome threesome . . . Seriously, I am most surprised by Span – he of the lifetime .351 OPS. He had a modest 5 game hitting streak (April 10-16), so I am not too worried about him. Same with Posey (as Flav said, he is probably playing hurt – so he gets a pass).

Pence? Dunno what his excuse is? Old age? Don’t laugh . . . He just turned 33. With that unorthodox swing; gangly 6’4″ frame; and not playing last year – this could be the start of him going downhill.

Couple that with his new bride wanting him to join her in being YouTube stars . . . umm, Pence might be the position player to be most worried about.

    * Chi, no worries . . . I went through quite a few threads and was amazed at how many were questioning Duff’s skills. Along with Panik and Pagan, he is my favorite Giants player. I also agree with WilcoJoe that Panik has a good chance to exceed Posey’s numbers. Just my opinion.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 21, 2016 at 9:15 am

NP re: Duffster. You have an awesome eye for talent, Blade. The three you mention are my favorites, too (you know I have always backed Caballo Loco when everyone was ragging on his ass). Panik has become my favorite. I really like that kid. If he stays healthy (and I know I say this a lot) the kid will win at least one batting title. I just love his composure both at 2nd and especially at the plate.

Lastly, we need to talk some specifics for our “Trip to Mecca.” I want to start dialing in some of the details (specific games and getting tickets, reserving places to stay – I found one that looks really good in Boston, and getting my airfare booked). I will give ya a shout tonight or over the weekend.

I get the Giants weren’t going to keep up the insane scoring pace. The only problem is there have been three games during this miserable stretch where they scored a combined 19 runs — and lost all three games. I know it’s way too early, but right now this team stinks in every which way.

And Flav’s probably right about Posey, although that can’t be a good thing either.

Tell me about it. I have had two close calls with potential big cash days this week on DraftKings. Sunday I was in the top 20 on a 9500 entry tourney until the Giants-Doghairs dropped me to a $40 finish. Yesterday, Rizzo gets robbed of a home run in the first inning, that would have won me $2000 when it was all said and done. Ended up winning another $40. It’s amazing how one base hit can drop you a few hundred bucks in some of those tournaments.

She is an amazing guitarist in her own right, but Prince was something else, Another friend got to play at one his Paisley Park events and meet him. Everyone gushed about the generosity of his spirit.

His fusion of the most salient aspects of Motown, Rock, Gospel, Jazz and just about every other musical genre know to mankind was of unprecedented genius. I look back on the old 80’s clips and the hair styles and clothes look a bit silly and dated but the music, oh man, the MUSIC. … no words.

In true rock star fashion Prince responds with “Can you make it rain harder?”. Then he went out and killed it. He was an amazing talent. RIP…

Holy shit. Prince gone. Like others, I was not a big fan of his stuff (certainly liked some of it), but respected him as a huge influence in the music industry. This has to be the worst year ever in regards to losing so many talented music folks. RIP.

On a somber note, here is today’s Gigante line-up:

    1. Denard Span (L) CF
    2. Joe Panik (L) 2B
    3. Hunter Pence (R) RF
    4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
    5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
    6. Angel Pagan (S) LF
    7. Matt Duffy (R) 3B
    8. Trevor Brown (R) C
    9. Johnny Cueto (R) P

Not sure if Posey is getting a day off, or if the toe is bothering him. No pitcher in the 8 hole, but Span still leading off. Pagan moving up in the order, too.

It’s a real pain in he ass and can, at times, take me up to five minutes per post. Then Im relegated to rushing to write so I can keep current with the discussion. Any suggestions? Anyone?

For example .. I rushed my 4:09 but it let me do the 4:10. The I tried to post the 4:19 at about 4:13 but it kicked me off .. It took 6 mins to get it up at 4:19 … Then it gave me the 4:20 right after but not sure if it will give this one.

I had not heard of that problem before, bb. Hang in there. Maybe it’s a temporary thing.

Almost like a high performance car misfiring. Some good things going on (Cueto, most of the relievers not named Gearrin, Duffy), but can’t put it all together.

Lisle– I wonder if there’s a box you need to click or unclick. There shouldn’t be any issues with the site, it was down for an hour this morning but everything is straightened out now.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on April 21, 2016 at 5:31 pm

Whe you say box to click, do you mean at my WP account page or, the settings on my iPad .. Or may be you are referring to a box some where else? … Batters box? Uh ;(

I had that happen a while back. You had to enter your email addy, then your pw, then you’d get sent to another screen to confirm your pw. It still happens once in a while.

Can you clear your browser cache.

that’s a good idea. Also, I almost always use a chromebook or a desktop usually, never an iPad. Not sure if that has anything to do with your login problems. I hate iPads they are so glitchy and you can’t type for shit on them. Just for surfing the net, I think Chromebook is significantly superior.

      • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on April 21, 2016 at 7:02 pm

That is a good idea. thanks Chuck I will try it. New devices are not in my budget at present, so that won’t be happening. I’m fine with the iPad for most everything I use it for, no complaints in general. I never had these issues when I was signing in on FB. And this has only been going pretty much since I set up the WP account. Unbelievable the amount flaming hoops they are making me jump through.

      • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on April 21, 2016 at 7:13 pm

And there ya go a good example of the inconsistency of how it is messing with me. 5:31 was the time of my last post, an hour and a half ago. In 90 mins it didn’t kick me off but I also didn’t leave the Flap site. Sometimes it’s like that, other times I can barely get one post up before I’m tossed out on my ass.

This rigmarole is most frustrating when I’m switching back the between the AtBat App and the
Flap feed. That is how I ‘watch’ most games. I don’t have TV possibility for the most part.

NY Times interview excerpt with Donald Trump talking about “winning.”

“On how the past year has turned out for him: A couple of people who know me actually said, “Be careful what you wish for.” It was very interesting. It was a compliment. Well, they understand that I win. My life is winning. I win. I know how to win. Most people don’t know how to win. In golf, in sports, in life — I win, always. Better knock on wood. [Knocks on his desk.]”

Maybe the Giants brass should contact him or Charlie Sheen – another expert on “winning.”

    I kid . . . I kid.

Oh yeah. They should be down 25. They just look disoriented out there. Getting killed on the glass. They should be taking it to Howard. Houston isn’t that good defensively and we’re making them look good by missing easy shots.

Draymond Green makes some of the worst fucking passes I’ve every seen, absolute playground, clown shit. For as good an assist maker as he is, he’ll make 2-3 plays in a row where he just throws the ball away. He can be incredibly frustrating at times.
