Somehow I missed this: Prince died in an elevator. That’s…..crazy.
I was never a huge Prince fan. In fact, since his epic Super Bowl halftime show I hadn’t even thought about him until he showed up at Oracle last month with a freaking scepter or cane or whatever that was. My buddies saw him perform the next night and said their minds were collectively blown.
But even not being a big fan I did walk the earth yesterday with a certain kind of melancholy malaise hovering above me. It was like when Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston died. Not big fans of them, but they were such a huge part of my youth, they were just always around somehow on MTV or on the radio or whatever, it was jarring to know that he was suddenly gone.
Now, back to baseball.
Giants update: We suck.

Yes, the Purple Reign is over. The Prince of persuasion through rock, funk, R & B, pop, jazz in an incredible fusion is gone. Ten thousand Minnesotans partied and danced, singing, laughing and weeping profusely last night in front of the iconic First Avenue club in Minneapolis last night in a celebration of life and love. Prince combined many strains of music and the feelings and realizations that all are one. Bands and fans flew in from many parts of America to be part of the swan song of the Prince of Purple Performance.
First Chyna now Prince? Its been a tough week.
I’ll be there at the game tomorrow if anyone is going. Luck of the draw, we’ll be treated to Peavy. Ugh.

This is unreal all of the monumental folks we have lost this year from the music community. Guys like Lonnie Mack (and the Memphis music scene, in general) gets lost in the shuffle often. Memphis is still on my bucket list (Beale Street, etc.).

Like him or not I never saw anyone with such bat speed and discipline at the plate, and who made Greg Maddux look positively ordinary on regular basis. Splash record untouchable.
One of the only Warriors I really can’t stand is Barbosa, always dribbling with his head down into traffic, terrible passer and defender. Maybe Clark takes some more of his minutes and they dump B next year. The way Kerr rests Curry and Thompson is part of his plan but getting a reliable shooter and another handle off bench to play with Livingston would be a priority imo. And Green working more on his post up game/drive and pull up (he never jump stops and gets caught in the air all the time) than being a point guard.
Cal says bye bye to one and done J Brown. He’ll be drafted early but really not an NBA player at this point. If Rabb goes too, Cuonzo might be gonzo too for greener pastures. League will be good again next year; without 3 starters that did most of the scoring, Cal will be in tough.
Choo-Choo was an original Met – obtained in the expansion draft from the Phillies (looked it up, as Casey would’ve advised).
Milt Pappas also died the other day. Mostly remembered for being on the wrong side of the Frank Robinson theft, but had a solid career. His W-L record was almost identical to Drysdale. Pappas was a “baby bird” too…
Drysdale, who I consider a very borderline HOFer averaged 272 IP from 1957-1968.

Bob Mould was in a great alternative rock band in Minneapolis in the 1980s called Husker Du. He then went on to have a terrific solo career. I saw him in concert at the Fillmore in SF in the late 1990s. Awesome show.
He posted this today on Facebook about Prince. It’s fairly long, but interesting, IMO, regarding the music scene in Minneapolis. He recorded at Prince’s studio, Paisley Park, as many others did, too. REM recorded their huge-selling album “Out of Time,” there, the one that had “Losing My Religion” as its hit single.
“I never spoke with Prince. He always struck me as a private guy. Maybe he was shy around strangers. We never had much actual interaction – a couple nods in passing, but no real words were exchanged.
The Twin Cities of the 1980s was a very special time for all of us local musicians. There were the North Minneapolis R&B artists, the South Minneapolis guitar rock bands, and in the center of it all was First Avenue/7th Street Entry.
I’ve seen Prince perform sold out shows with The Revolution at First Ave, he and a rhythm section jamming as a guitar/bass/drums three piece in the Entry for 30 people, and was selfishly frustrated when he took over “the main room” for 25 days of filming Purple Rain.
I had the pleasure of spending seven days recording the basic tracks for my first solo album at Paisley Park in December 1988. It was the most professional studio I had ever seen at that point in my life. On the seventh day, I moved from the B room to Studio A, which was Prince’s primary room. I remember seeing Sheila E’s percussion in one of the isolation booths. The large control room was decorated with several of Prince’s scarves. It certainly felt like Prince’s home.
Prince was an artist through and through – always pushing himself to new levels, often creating controversy through his actions and words, and ultimately creating a lifetime of wonderful memories for the world with his incredible volumes of published (and unheard) works.
I heard the news while driving from Tomah WI to Minneapolis. I immediately flipped on The Current 89.3 FM to make sure what I was hearing was true. Sure enough, there was a live report from outside Paisley Park confirming the sad news of Prince’s passing.
I’m two blocks from First Avenue as I write these words. Friday and Saturday nights, I will walk that same stage we all know from the movie. The exterior walls of First Avenue are covered with stars to honor the musicians who made an impact on music fans in Minnesota.
Make no mistake: Prince was the brightest star in these Northern skies. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow musicians. Prince’s music will give consolation and comfort to the collective grief. Godspeed.”

Mould may have his Minneapolocentric point of view, in his otherwise wonderful encomium for Prince, but i disagree as to the identity of the musical Star of the North. You need to go a couple degrees north of the 45th parallel up to Duluth and ultimately, Hibbing for that. Though not fractionally as great a performer as the Reigning Prince of Purple, that Zimmerman kid who took on the alter-ego I.D. will go down as the single greatest poetic genius writing in the English language during the 20th Century. “Desolation Row”, which few music fans have even heard, much less understood, is singularly more powerful than anything written by Yeats, Eliot or Pound.
“Electric Word Life” is a terrific title, BF. Very cool.

One of his nephews, Carl, was my fraternity brother at Washington University back in the 60’s. Unfortunately, it does not work particularly well on many of today’s cheapshit, thin-hulled cans. Works just fine on my slowly dwindling stock of pre-Fuckyoushima radiation Alaskan salmon cans. Good steel in those containers.
Hey, Zumie? Have you heard of Têtes Noires? They were an all-girl punk/folk band in Minneapolis in the early 80s. I work with the keyboardist/producer. She was sharing stories about all the times they crossed paths with Prince, and Morris Day and the Time.
And yeah, loved Husker Du. The only band named after a Danish board game.

July 22nd we are definitely going to the Giant-YankMee game. Maybe hit Finnerty’s on this day. I want to check-out the site where the Polo Grounds used to stand. I heard there is some type of small memorial/plague there? Does anyone know details on this?
July 23rd we fly out late…may try to squeeze in the game, but if not, will be kicking it in the City.

I’m pretty sure I can make it to one. Not sure both is do-able, but I’ll absolutely look into it. If it’s only one, man, what a tough choice. I saw the Giants play the Yanks three years ago, and seeing them at Fenway definitely is a bucket list kind of deal (only been there once, 25 years ago). But then the Yanks game looks like the possibility of a full-on East Coast FlapaLOOza, so there’s that. If I do Fenway, then meeting up in NYC that Thursday wouldn’t be hard since it’s on my home back, too.

Stix, I’m sure Mould has super high reverance for Dylan, but probably looked at it more like Dylan left and wasn’t identified with that geographical area as much. Dylan went to NY City and became part of that folk scene in the early ’60s, and made his name. The folk scene depicted so well in the Coen Bros. movie “Inside Llewyn Davis.”
It’s one of the interesting and counter-intuitive things in American music that the whole folk music revival, starting in the 1950s or so, continuing until now, was more of an urban niche type of thing. It would be folk groups singing songs about the hard-scrabble life of a coal miner in Kentucky, performed in a club in NY City or Boston.
Nowadays, if you want to see people singing songs about the coal miners of West Virginia, you’re far more likely to see it in Berkeley than in West Virginia.
In fact, folk songs about coal miners starting unions is not appreciated much in right-wingy West Virginia.
Yeah, quite true for the TC music scene, per se. As a resident of the P.C. term “Greater Minnesota” ~ actually less than half the state’s population as something like 56% is constipated in the metro area i’ve been pretty outta touch with the scene in the Sitties since the days when Leo Kottke and Spider John Kohrner played gigs at the core of Minnesota’s late 60’s hippy scene, the Coffehouse Extempore. It was really first general exposure for both of them and later fed into the Westbank bar scene and then expanded further into South Minneapolis ~ rapidly gentrifying like so many liveable core cities and now more recently, into an area north of downtown Mpls called Nordeast.
Twin Cities are getting pretty culturally vibrant anymore in the cores, but the traffic is getting totally insane ~ reminding me of Denver and Dallas but not yet up to SoCal madness. Most of the burbs ~ particularly exurbia are totally nowheresville.
One of the best times I ever had “a la Stripes” was hijacking an Air Force Reserve bus for an evening of carousing in St. Paul and Minneapolis back in 1980. My buddies and I went bar hopping and finally scored 4-5 stewardesses at this night club. They didn’t believe we had a full size bus from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Air Reserve Station parked near the club . . . fast forward an hour later, we had quite a party on that bus. 🙂

Chi, we were on our 2 week summer camp gig . . . I had never been to Minnesota before and between their State bird the mosquito and the humidity – I dunno which was worse. No AC in the barracks, so the only relief was night and constant cold showers. Pure torture. When we took the bus, we were fucking fed up with all things Minnesota, albeit, the Twins game we caught at the old Metropolitan (?) Stadium was cool. Back then, not too much was off limits . . . drugs, alcohol, women, and song . . . hehehe. Unfuckingbelievable how boring I have become today. Coffee and women are my only vices. 🙂
I also thought these glass tunnel bridges were quite cool. Saw them all over Minneapolis. I hadn’t really experienced snow before meeting my future wife (who was an amateur champion skier), so I didn’t know what the fuck these were for. Looked pretty futuristic to me.
Those are all over downtown Houston as well, in addition to underground tunnels with restaurants and shopping. Well worth it in the middle of summer when your wearing a suit.

Hey, Willie, yeah Green had a bad night turnover wise last night. The last one was a total breakdown on his part. He’s a very good passer, which is likely what Kerr was thinking, that he could feed a shooter for a desperation heave. The win was right there. Green’s gaffe combined with fucking Harden’s blatant push off on Iggy on the last basket just pissed me off. Worst of all, they wasted a great effort by Ian Clark, who teed up the win with some great plays. Harden gets away with murder almost every time he drives the lane.
Draymond still struggles with getting too wound up (IMO) but that’s also part of what makes him good, his energy. Chuck and others accurately mentioned last night that the W’s style of play can lead to a lot of turnovers, but that explanation only goes so far. They made a lot of sloppy, lazy passes last night, which they don’t do when they’re on.
Dray just needs to be smarter in certain situations. He and the team will bounce back with a good effort tomorrow. As it stands, the Rockets barely beat them at home and without Curry and it sounds like Steph may play tomorrow. Bye, bye Rockets.

Went to a bar in my old hometown. Met up with previously unmet family members of my best buddy back in the latter 50’s ~ Shorty. He was into Mantle and the Yanks and Willie was my man. The amount of history and interrelationships (often literally) in small burgs can be totally amazing. One of my late buddy’s nieces and her hubby figure their 10 y.o. is another Shorty. He seems to have all the athletic chops.
On a nice spring evening i was not gonna hang at home and frustrate over another loss by the Gigantes. Didn’t even check the score when i got home kinda lateish. Pleasant surprise when i hit SFGate on the puter this morning. Alphabetsouperman ~ SamWhatAm ~ may be setting out on quite a career as a Giant. Obviously he made a hit with the homecrowd and likely with the recently overtaxed Bullies as well. Also nice to see something like 4 Giants in double figures for hits as well as dress rehearsals for their possibly resurrected congalines.
Let’s hope the recent slumbering slump was but a blip on a balmy season. We’ll know more tonight.
