Old Gear
I’m sitting here typing this in a worn out, black, long sleeve Giants shirt. No frills, just “Giants” emblazoned across the front. There are multiple holes in it. The “black” has faded to almost gray. At this point, it’s probably only good for sleeping in. I think I bought it in 1998.
It got me to wondering about the gear we all own. Outside of a hat, what’s the oldest Giants gear you own and still wear? This is probably the oldest for me. I wear shit hard so it’s no surprise that I don’t have anything older than this.
Good win last night. When Barry got his curtain call didn’t it seem like the entire Marlins dugout was ignoring it? I wonder how they feel about Barry and his fame. Do they listen to him? Or do they think he’s a diva?
I’ve got Giants gear going back to the late nineties . . . I would have more, but when I moved from my mountain home to my new condo, I got rid of more than 2/3s of all my shit (tools, clothes, furniture, etc.). It was quite liberating.
That being said, I do have a pristine 1981 49er jacket my late brother gave to me. I actually would wear it today, but it doesn’t fit anymore (I was 160 lbs. back then). Now, it’s sort of like a memorial to my bro and sits in my closet. Miss him. π¦
excellent way to kick off this thread, Blade.
Gotta remember, Bonds isn’t going to get this kind of love and tribute anywhere else, ever. Probably seems odd to young Marlins, since he got 2 or 3 different ovations.
I think they have ton of respect for him, but I wonder how dedicated he is over 162 and how much he can really help younger guys. Big part of that is how much they listen and take to heart what he says.
Only gear I ever wear is a Jackson St hat, dark blue with tiger on lid, in honor of Purvis Short (and a few others).
I know, but that kinda supports my point. Since this never happens anywhere else you’d think they’d stop to watch it at least. I didn’t see one player even looking in his direction when he went for that curtain call early in the game (it might have been a replay of him coming back to the dugout after dropping off the LU card at home plate).
Gonna pull rank on ya, Flav. Still got my black cap with the orange SF embroidered up front. Bought it in the City in August of ’89 a couple days before doing an antique show at the Cow Palace and the afternoon prior to my single experience of the Stick where i watched traded pitcher Terry Mulholland and the Philthies defeat the Giants. Cap sits up on a wooden peg at the upper corner of the door between the livingroom and the kitchen. Heating stove is immediately below it. Grey with fly-ash and sundry dust-bunnies and its only dusted off two or three times during the season when SF needs an extra pick-up.
Also have maybe three t-shirts featuring the Giants. Bought them at garage sales over the years ~ surprisingly, all here in Minnesota.
Sweatshirts, jerseys, hats. It seems like I’ve got tons of gear. With a Bochy sized dome it is difficult to find hats so I tend to hold on to them. The oldest item is a vanilla home jersey with no number that I wear to most games. It’s from the mid 90s or thereabouts and full of beer and brautwerst stains. I’ve been thinking of getting a new one at the game today and am strongly considering #5. Duffy, Uribe are two players I have been a fan of. I think Bochy wore it briefly as well. Then there is Mel Ott, Burrell,, Ishikawa, Durham….Shinjo may sway me off of it. I’ll think about it over an anchor steam.
As far as Bonds goes, Stanton flew out to right late and I thought I saw him sort of blow off Bonds in the dugout afterwards but maybe it was just me. I’m not the biggest fan of Bonds but I still thought it was bullshit seeing him in another uni.
I move a lot and have not kept many mementos. I had a hard drive crash in 2013 and lost many photos of early AT&T games with my young boys. I see people at the games with there hats covered in pins and, a little bit, I want to be like that. It is ever so groovy.
Every thing I have heard about bonds the batting coach has been positive. I believe he has the ability to grow and change. He will never be rose-like if never elected. Having two trips as his leader is probably harder.
When asked about being on the AT&T wall of fame he said he had spoken to Larry about it.
“I felt it really wasn’t the right time,” Bonds said. “It would be kind of weird. My boss is Jeffrey [Loria] now, and I want to respect him. I want to respect the Marlins, and we’re here to play the Giants and put on a good performance. I think it’s just more respectful to the Miami fans, and if the Giants want to do something at a later date with me in the right uniform, then I think that’s more appropriate.
“I’m very serious about being a good hitting coach for the Miami Marlins. I respect the Giants, and I’ll root for them when I leave, but I’m not going to root for them right now. I don’t want them to beat us while I’m here, no. I take my job very serious.”
My Facebook page, Barry in the Hall, has suffered from neglect. Y’all should go there and post something to encourage its return to life now that Barry is back in baseball.
Oldest surviving Giants gear I have, I think, is a Giants cap with Ellis Burks’ autograph on the bill.
I have lots of favorite Giants stuff, mostly championship shirts and hoodies.
The hat I most wear is my Birmingham Black Barons hat, Mays’ Negro Leagues team. It’s a great-looking cap, but also, like Bochy, I’ve got a really big dome, and this cap fits me very comfortably.
I can relate, Dirt. π
Keep an Eye on: Two in the middle minors. Sure, it’s early, early yet, but today i happened to take the time to do a quick check on pipeline stats. Two hitting prospects ~ one an OUTFIELDER ~ caught my eye with early takeoffs.
In San Jose 2015 6th rounder RFer Steven Duggar, a 22 Y.O. outta Clemson has April readings of .364, .462, and .750 for an OPS of 1.212. In roughly half a season after his signing last summer he turned in a .304, .401, .429 line. Big jump in the power readings. Being jumped from college ball to High A in less than one full season in the pipeline indicates the development people have high regard for this kid.
Augusta’s answer to Duggar is shortstop Dillon Dobson who in early returns appears to be a middle infielder with considerable pop. One of an incredible 4 listed SS’s for the Greenjackets ~ including high bonus kid Lucius Fox ~ Dobson in 56 ABs has racked up 19 hits for a BA of .339. Interesting thing about those base knocks is that they include 4 doubles, a triple and 5 April dingers, meaning that over half his raps this early on have been XBH’s. Rest of the line includes an OBP of .400, an SP of .714, for another very nice OPS of 1.114.
I don’t have old Giants crap. I have two caps, one a few years old I bought at ATT, one I bought this spring at the Peoria AZ park of the whichever team I was watching. Snarkettes have some Gyros shirts. I’m not into memorabilia much, of any kind, so it’s not a Giants thing. I’ve got the We Score We Win custom T we rocked at the FlapaLooza a coupla years ago, I dig that shirt big time…
I think the oldest thing I have is my first Giants jersey I ever bought, it’s a road gamer from mid 90’s. I also have an awesome poster my wife found for me at a garage sale. I dig it a lot because it’s from 89 and it was the first season I became a fan. It has Kevin Mitchell, The Thrill, Big Daddy, Robby Thompson, and Matt Williams.
Carstie, thanks for the info about he kids on the farm. It’s always interesting to hear about guys on the rise.
The very oldest piece of Giants gear have that I haven’t completely worn out is my 1989 Starter satin jacket. I bought it the day the Giants clinched the NL flag against the Cubs, while I was going to school in Bellingham, WA.
If any of you guys might remember, those old Starters were built like tanks. I wore that jacket for years, so much that I caught a lot of shit from friends, and it’s still serviceable. It’s in semi-retirement now, hanging in my closet. It’s black with the orange “SF” on the left breast, like the road unis the G’s wore at the time. Remember that NLCS, Will Clark ramming a single up the middle off of Mitch “The Wild Thing” Williams for the winning runs? The Thrill was off the hook in that series. I bet Greg fucking Maddux remember it.
After that, it’s a couple of T’s and hats from about 1987. I’ve gotten in the habit in recent years of buying two of everything. When the inevitable time came when a tee wore out, I’d have a new one.
How’s that for some verbosity? Good win last night.
That;s 2007 on those tee shirts.
Nice, I have a slightly newer starter jacket, circa 2002. It was one of the last starter jackets the made, before the newer style dugout jackets came out. I bought it in 2006 after an exhaustive 3 month search on ebay. Still looks awesome.
How about that Candlestick crowd? Packed to the gills, baby!
My favorite live sporting event moment of all time. My mom took me to that game (I think it was a Monday, so I cut school). We bought tickets from a scalper in Section 51 (I Think), it was dead center, upper deck about ten rows from the top. I have never to this day sat so far away from home plate. I didn’t give a shit. I wouldn’t trade that day for a seat next to Larry Baer, with him buying all my drinks for an entire game.
I remember listening to that game in the middle of nowhere in NorCal along the Klamath River, on a fall fishing trip. The radio reception was scratchy in the truck, but I heard it, and went crazy. I knew we had it won right there, there was no way we were going to blow it to the Cubs in the 9th, and we were headed for the WSeries for the first time in my life as a Giants fan. Great moment – has to be in top 5 all time SF Giant moments for me. I hadn’t remembered how high that pitch was, Clark really had to get his top hand on the bat up there to smoke that ball — great bat control. Somehow, in game 6 2002 when SF was up 5, I did not have the same feeling of “we got this”, it was just wait and see before celebrating, which unfortunately was the right approach. Maybe another decade and half of disappointment since ’89 did that to me…
such a great moment.
Now that they signed Belt, I really hope Will Clark works with him more, gets him more aggressive at the plate, and more mindful of situational hitting. I don’t know what Meulens does, I want Clark to get into Belt’s head and make him more aggressive. He can still work the count with his good eye, but has to pull the trigger on the pitch to hit, and on close pitches on pitcher’s counts…
Too bad Bonds isn’t around to get in his ear. I remember reports of him helping Crawford a couple years ago. L
Joe, Snarkk, good stuff. Joe, I’m jealous! That must’ve been incredible, with the crowd going berserk and the Giants going back to the WS for the first time in 27 years. Snarkk, I was going nuts too. I was alive in ’62, 1 year old, but in reality that was the Giants going to the Series for the first time in my life. It didn’t end well, but that moment above was one of the great ones in SF Giants history. With the 3 rings now in the bank, I can look back on ’89 with fond memories.
I think it is total bullshit that all the Giants want to do for Barry is give him one of those bullshit plaques like they gave to scrubs like LeMaster and Randy Moffitt. The freaking stadium should be called Barry Bonds Ballpark. I don’t blame Barry for telling them to stick a plaque up their ass. He needs a statue, minimum.
fuck YES.
I think he’ll get a statue someday. But, it will be a while. Apparently they are putting in a statue this summer somewhere of Gaylord. Eh, I’m not sure I even consider him really a Giant. He was a Giant for 8 or 9 years, then the second half of a long career he bopped around lots of teams. 2 Cys, neither of which was with the Giants. I guess he’s more of a Giant than anything else, but I was a kid then, I don’t remember much other than people said he cheated with the spitter, etc. Bonds will probably get a statue in about 10 years…
The house that Bonds built. Sort of surprised we don’t hear it glossed that way. I think the plaque is just the first of many landmarks the club will roll out for him. Totally agree about the statue. Where’s a good spot? Certainly not amounts the palms. That is exclusive to Mays. Maybe inside near the coke bottle or at the foot of the 3rd street bridge as you come in from the parking lots? Across the water from Marichal. I don’t know…
I usually get rid of my gear once it is worn. The oldest thing I have is my infamous game-worn Yamid Haad jersey, that goes back 10-15 years or so? I have had an official warm up jacket for a few years and now that i live at about 4000 feet, i actually wear it from time to time as that thing is too damn warm to ever wear in San Diego. I prefer to wear the traditional black Giants gamer hat and am not a huge fan of the orange bill or specialty hats that stray from the traditional logo. I bought my current one about 3 years ago at ATT on my way to have a nightcap with Snarrk and James after a Flapalooza. Probably due for a new one this year.
Dirt: i noticed that exchange between Bonds and Stanton and wondered the same thing. I actually think Barry is gonna be fine as a batting coach.
I was wondering when you got the Haad jersey. “Infamous”. lol. You were wearing that for the *infamous* hot dog game if I recall right.
I have a hat and jacket from mid 80’s. Hat has been down a lot of rivers with me including the Colorado. Jacket to small now. I had one of the gold niners jackets from 81. Wore it to the parade in 81. Some roommate absconded with it.
I bought a Giants cap at my first ever game at Pac Bell in late summer of 2000. I basically wore it throughout my twenties and into my early thirties. Most weekend mornings that hat smelled of beer, booze and weed. It was wretched at times. Some of the best days of my life occured wearing that hat. Most of my friends in Austin today probably wouldn’t recognize me if I wasn’t wearing it.
I snuck out of work that day and went to Marvin Gardens in Belmont to watch that game. It was a madhouse that day. I think it was a Thurrsday? Brett Bulter, Zimmer managing the Cubbies, the Hawk in the dugout. Wild thing. The Thrill. Epic day.
Oldest thing I have shirt-wise is a Forty Fucking Niners shirt I bought in the stick parking lot, 2 for $5.00 in 77 or 78. It’s a XXL that wouldn’t fit a 10 year old now. My opening day 1993 Jerry Garcia opening day grateful dead giants shirt finally bit the dust after much care and love, but it faded out of existence. The other one I got that year, and old school Giants script shirt on an orange baseball I still have. Eee-uuu-henio Velez signed it at the 2009 fan fest along with Dave Roberts, and Sergio.
I have a bat that I found in a bag (Dale Murphy model) in the stands after a game in 1978. It had a pro-style hat, non-adjustable grey under-bill, that was a size 7-3/4. Bigger than my fat head. The bag deteriorated in 5 years, and I had the hat till about 3 years ago. The bat still rests under my bed.
After ray wershing got an unnecassry roughness penalty, we had some shirts made up with his number and “mad dog” on the back. It may still be around somewhere.
That’s awesome. Loved Fat Ray.
My son has been on me for a couple years to buy him one of those gold jackets. When I find the proper one, I’ll do it. There is only one right one, and a lot of imitations.
If Goff goes to the Rams, I think that will be a good thing for him. Cal kid stays in California, doesn’t go back to the craziness of Philly, or dogmeatdom of Cleveland. He may not blossom until Fisher gets replaced, though, seems he’s not a particularly great choice for a HC that can mentor and grow a young QB…
I have a hat that’s been around, regular black, etc., have no idea where I got it or how old it is.
Plenty of 80’s shit. But I can’t find my custom made Candy Maldonado jersey that I literally spent my last cent on in 1987. Where the fuck could it have gone??? It wasn’t easy to get SF Giant stuff in NY back then.
I have no good Giants hats. It’s hard for me to find one I like and then when I do I usually leave it on the train or whatever. I’m very bad at keeping track of hats and sunglasses. Very good with keys and social security card that I’ve had since I was 16. Jumped into Felt Lake once with it in my pocket so it’s a little hard to read and it’s torn all the way around the edges but I still have that be-atch….
Still have my ss card but haven’t carried it around since high school.
Also have my first driver license.
Sunglasses are the absolute worst. The average time of possession for a pair is about three days.
Steph Curry cleared to play in game 4.
I have my first mug shots.
Oh yeah?
One more for today, Flav, I know you’re a big Thrill fan. From the same series. Note the look on Zimmer’s face as Clark’s grand salami bounces off of Sheffield Ave. Classic shit:
He really should’ve had a better career. I don’t think he took such good care of himself after the Mackie Shilstone days…
that fucking country bumpkin fuck who finally tossed Thrill’s bomb back on to the field….unreal. I sat here and watched that ball rest on the grass for a second before the camera panned away. I sat there stunned.
I can’t believe he gave into the pressure. Keep the fucking ball you dope. I wonder what happened to that ball. I’d give anything to have that ball sitting somewhere in my house, even in a box somewhere. It would never spend a second in a box.
A lot of outfield regulars bring a “dummy” ball that they throw back on the field (for show) and keep the one they caught…
where do they keep the dummy ball?
Regarding gear, I forgot to mention the totally rockin’ “We score, we win” shirt and the sombrero!
I tell ya, I was diggin’ the ‘2 flaps down’ hats last night. Would have liked to have gotten one of those.
For oldest Giants stuff in general that I have, I’ve got a lot of programs and scorecards from over the years, starting in the ’70s. I often kept score (and still do) and it’s interesting to look back and see what the lineups were that day. Such blasts from the past.
I just found that 1991 program from old timers day. I have the SIs and cry Ickes from the 1981 and 84 Super Bowls.
Chronicles?
probably SF Chronicles. I have all of those from our first WS (2010). I’m guessing a lot of you guys do
Chronicles. Fucking autocorrect. There are boxes of shit I haven’t opened in25 years so there may. be some good shit in there.
I have the front page of the green with Archie Reese celebrating the goal line stand mounted on poster board. Not very green anymore but great pic.
I actually used to have my ticket from game 2 at the Stick of the ’71 NLCS with the Pirates. The game SF got smoked 9-3, with Bob Robertson crashing 3 dingers. I think the first to ever do that in a playoff game. No clue where that ticket is now…
I went to game 1. Perry’s win.
Yeah, I’m not seeing a Perry statue. That’s a misfire by Baer. I barely accept the Cepeda statue, and at least he’s around once in a while. Perry has rarely been around the Giants the last 40 years. They might as well put up a Frankie Frisch statue.
lol, totally agree.
Maeda is annoying me. He’s pitching too well.
Dirt’s at the Giants game tonight. Cool!
I’ll be at Wednesday’s game vs. the Padres.
Imagine all of those countless moments that Bonds has had at AT&T and in a Giants uniform. Now he’s standing on the visiting dugout steps next to Justin Fucking Bour looking out at the epic landscape he used to dominate. It’s just a joke that he’s been relegated to hitting coach of the Marlins. He should be at our yard every night, just like Thrill and McCovey…..
Well said!
couple nice ABs there from panic and duff. Fernandez hardly ever even looks at 2b.
Yeah another line drive—starting those runners pays off.
I’d do anything to see Amy G do an in-game interview with Barry right now and start with…”Barry, you were such a legend here. And I don’t know if you know this (big smile) but the Giants have done something to honor your time here…..”
Barry: “Really?”
AmyG: “Oh yes! Since you’ve been gone not a single Giants player has ever worn your number. Congratulations!!!!!”
Barry: big smile blank stare.
AmyG: “Back to you Kruk!”
Mattingly is such an idiot…….
Donnie 2x off to a good start with miami. Nice review.
How fucking retarded is Donny 2 Steps?
Well the 2 step was classic retarded, but freaking a challenge at 2nd base even after his runner never gets near the fucking bag on the force? Is fucking ludicrous and a waste of baseball slow moving game. He’s the worse offender of holding up the game since “The Human Rain Delay Mike Hargrove”
Flav I agree with you about Bonds, but I think the real culprit is more Bud that Baer. I’m dead certain Bud told everyone NO ONE signs Bonds after his last year with the Giants and made sure he was done as a player.
He was pissed I’m sure that Aaron got eclipsed and has no use for Bonds whatsoever and made sure he got screwed.
I used to work and play softball on company team with a blonde gal who was rather top heavy and had same name as the clueless Giants in the stands gal reporter. She was gf of our best player so I didn’t say it around him, but to me she was Aimless Pointless and Useless.
Maeda no-hitter for 5 innings so far, in Colorado. Surely that can’t last.
Jose Fernandez does not have the body of a superstar. Dude needs to start working out.
I still think Brenly made a good call saying Samardzija looks like Captain Morgan.
lol. With an eyepatch, yeah I see it.
Yeah, that challenge by Donnie was absurd. One of the worst in the history of replay challenges so far.
and I get it, they have some guy responsible for cluing him in or not. But that was so obvious, was two-trips even watching the game?
Barry’s got some work to do with that little dance Dietrich is doing with himself as the pitch is coming.
First inning was nice but, it’s likely going to take more than 2 runs to win with Peavy in there…for however much longer he goes.
you know Boch is gonna leave him in one batter too long
Just noticed that Posey has not only the fingernails painted but nearly the entire finger so Lind Jake can see the sign!
Blind
If only there was some kind of technology to help him see better. Some kind of eyeglass-type device.
lol
Its only four innings, and the fifth is his/our Waterloo but Jake is DEALING!
I just saw Jake in the gym! Jake’s my boy!
Peavy? really?
Maeda 3 hits, no runs so far. An ERA of 0.36 so far. The league needs to figure him out.
When Blanco caught that ball near the seats, did Krukow, quoting the fan, say “that’s bitchin'”? or something like that? you can say that?
“You’re bitchin’!” Was the exact line. I was a little surprised myself.
so I didn’t hear wrong; thanks. Isn’t that a Cali surfin’ term originally?
Nick Swisher was laughably bad at first base today. Scranton-Wilkes-Barre RailRiders @ Chiefs. No Manny Burriss, sadly.
There’s no way that should have worked. Bochy is a charmed man. π
Body by Jake workout baby!!
Pays off with a smoking 2 run single!!
maybe Magnus grunted hitting tips
pretty nice fielding play earlier with the slide pop up and throw to 1b with runner on 3rd.
that shouldn’t have worked either.
My SF hat is faded and old, and I cannot tell you when I got it; can’t even recall which decade. Dennis Z’s is so faded it looks Padres brown, and I have told him that. He can’t see it.
Where exactly is Blade? Thighland? I keep getting pop-up ads for Asian chicks. They’re onto me.
lol, he’s around.
SF bay area . . . So sad – gone from 25-35 year old Asians to 50 year old plus white broads trying to hit on me via Plenty Of Fish. Ugh.
I would like some gamer babe in real life, not as rotund as those near Blanco, say to me, “you’re bitchin’.”
when Kokonuts likes something I liked of his on Twitter it makes me feel like he and I are cheating on the Flap. And those are the 23 gayest words I’ve ever typed in succession on the internet…….
and I am literally chuckling aloud
I did not realize Kuiper started broadcasting in 1986. He literally went straight from the field into the booth. Those must have been Giantsvision games. Anyone remember those pay per view games? I remember my watching those games for like the first couple of innings and then the screen would go scrambled. It always happened during a crucial point in the game, like runners on base and The Thrill coming to bat. You just knew there was some sick bastard in the studio, waiting for that perfect moment to push the kill button.
ha, no I don’t recall that. But I’ve often wondered when K and K started broadcasting. Obviously Kuip went into the biz before Kruk
the Kruk *you’re bitchin” line was even lost on Kuip, It was awful and not funny. He yelled it out too so maybe that made it worse as bad jokes are usually told by the loudest people……
that’s what my daughter says, in restaurants….also when I drop F bombs in public, even as recently as last week, to illustrate it can make you sound dumb. “But Dad, you’re doing it now…”
Last hitter for JP.
You have to bring him out for the 7th but the leash has to be damn short.
like in some sort of S&M role play
I just don’t care for Mattingly.
Amy G looked like she was wearing a fly fisherman’s vest. Less than a week before I meet DJLoo, Deo volente.
Peavy’s success tonight proves he can pitch when he is smart about pitch selection and executes. (Wait. What a dumbshit remark. That’s true for any pitcher.) Has anyone noted how the Shark looks like a young Randy Johnson?
My oldest and most precious piece of Giants gear β although it is only a reissue and not an original β is my vintage New York era cap … It is so worn and dirty it looks like it could be original.
sweet
Those are so cool. Reissues are still available. I have a New York Giants wool pennant. I love that old NY stuff.
I have a NY Giants felt pennant and a drinking glass with an old logo, from Cooperstown, but I haven’t had them all that long; since 2011 or so…
Peavy reminds me of the junkyard dog pitcher in Major League (Eddie Harris) throwing everything he’s got including greaseballs and horse liniment to get his outs!
But tonight Peavy had it working and Boch rode an extra inning out of him..
You put snot. . . on the ball?
I don’t have your arm kid.
Yeah, the ol’ snotball.
Duffy is coming on.
I could go for one of those onesies.
Peavy thru 7?
Whew, Stanton looks bad. I fear tomorrow.
You guys are in fine form tonight.
Strick looked good there. Just got back from dinner so, Peavy pitched 7??
whatever happened to Nipper?
He’s at my blog. Not sure why he isn’t posting here. Then again, Ferrethead has gone awol as well.
give him my best…and DelmarDenny too
Ahh, he was banned from my site as well. He seemed to lose touch with sanity. In a bad way.
and TedSpe and Mrmrmrmr and others I can’t recall…#impermanence
yeah
