San Diego
You like pitching match ups? Today is the day for you. There are like 5 extremely interesting games today and if you’re playing DK, where you have to pick 2 pitchers, it’s going to be a very tough choice.
Bumgarner in SD is intriguing. Rea is no pushover, I expect this to be a low scoring game…….
The main question I have: Will my main man on the San Diego scene (San Dawg) be at any of the games…..
Regarding “our beloved Dubs….”….. not much else to say………
Pads are hitting .232 as a team, 14th in NL. They are dead last in OB, 13th in slugging. They are missing couple guys that might help, Solarte and Spangenberg. Derek Norris is hitting .188, Kemp only.250.
And the good Upton is gone of course.
They did beat Cubs couple times tho and had a good road trip but are only 8-11 at home.
Giants get any offense at all these games look like a set up for the Big 3. Maybe one of them makes hist in front of SanDawg and doesn’t allow any hits at all.
Dewey Redman, sax player I saw in Ornette Coleman’s band over at Keystone SF early 70s go a powerful show, would have been 85 today. His son Joshua (Berkeley HS?) is a very inventive player himself and going strong.
Even with the blown obvious non-call on traveling, those refs should be yanked for missing an obvious call and how are things like that not reviewable at this stage of the sports replays, the Warriors were down 4 with 15 seconds and the play Kerr set up was a shit sandwich. Draymond should have immediately taken the shot…I thought this series would go 7 games for a Dubs win. Think we can win one on the road and hold service at home…
As Zum mentioned last night, Angels beat Maeda and Dodgers 7-6.
Maeda is now 0-3 with ERA over 5.00 in last 3 stars and gave up 4 runs in 4 innings last night. Baez out of the pen gave up 3 more.
Given Wood Stripling Kazmir, Big 3 of Giants seem very formidable right now compared to Opie and what’s behind him.
Paucity of hotels in the Bronx for the game that Chi and I are going to. Total of 11 . . . Went with Super 8 (lulz). I’ve never been a big hotel guy, as I am always out doing things. Usually go with the mid-range and occasional 4 star. That being said, NY is just about the most expensive place on the planet, so 2 thoughts or considerations came to my mind while booking this hotel: 1. Risk of getting mugged . . . if not murdered; and, 2. Cost.
I went with cost, albeit, even Super 8 is $282 for the double room we booked for 2 nights. Hoping Loo’s friend (forgot his name – Lug Nut?) can provide protection if needed.
LOL…how long does it take to get a concealed carry permit for NYC? 😉 I am with you, Blade. Shit, we are going to be out and about most of the time. All I need is a place to hang my hat and get a few cycles of sleep (and not get mugged or killed)! SO looking forward to this trip.
Oh, and you think prices are high in NYC…take a look at Boston. I am still beating the bushes on possibilities there. Flapalooza – Coast to Coast Style!
OK, Flav indicated BuzzSaw . . . If you’re tuning in BuzzSaw, I apologize for calling you Lug Nut.
This from my source of sources, my brother from another mother, Rainman. Kontos activated, Blackburn optioned.
Did Blackburn get in a game? Or is his the unkindest cut?
A cup of coffee, only, I think.
“Major League Baseball handed down discipline on Tuesday for a total of 14 players and staff members in the wake of Sunday’s incident between the Blue Jays and Rangers.
The most severe penalty was given to Texas second baseman Rougned Odor, who landed a punch on Jose Bautista’s jaw after the Toronto outfielder slid into second base in the top of the eighth inning of Sunday’s game at Globe Life Park.
In terms of the longest fighting-related suspensions since 2000, Odor’s eight games is two fewer than the penalty levied upon Cubs catcher Michael Barrett for punching then-White Sox backstop A.J. Pierzynski in ’06 and then-D-backs pitcher Ian Kennedy for starting a melee with the Dodgers in ’13 with high inside pitches.
Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Chavez was suspended three games for intentionally throwing at Prince Fielder in the bottom of the eighth after warnings had been issued to both benches.
Bautista and Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus were each suspended for one game, Bautista for his actions on the field and his postgame comments and Andrus for his “aggressive actions” after the benches emptied.
Odor and Bautista have notified MLB of their intention to appeal, and both were available to play Tuesday night.
The suspension of Chavez was scheduled to begin Tuesday night. If he elects to appeal, it will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.
Andrus did not appeal, and he will be eligible to return to the lineup Wednesday.
In addition, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was suspended three games because he returned to the field after being ejected earlier in the game and incited further fighting, while first-base coach Tim Leiper will miss one game for returning to the dugout after being ejected. Both also received undisclosed fines.
Further fines were given to Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson and outfielder Kevin Pillar, both for aggressive actions, and bench coach DeMarlo Hale who, as acting manager, received the standard discipline that occurs when a pitcher (Chavez) is judged to have intentionally thrown at a hitter with warnings in effect.
The altercation started when Rangers pitcher Matt Bush hit Bautista with a pitch. Bautista responded with a hard slide into Odor at second base that touched off the fracas. The umpires ruled that Bautista had violated the new rules governing the proper way to break up double plays.
Bush was fined for throwing at Bautista. Other Rangers who were fined were pitcher Sam Dyson and bench coach Steve Buechele (aggressive actions) plus A.J. Griffin and Robinson Chirinos (going on the field while being on the disabled list).
There has been bad blood between the teams since Bautista flipped his bat after his three-run homer helped Toronto come back to beat the Rangers in Game 5 of the American League Division Series last October.”
How anyone could be penalized for punching Pierznski is beyond me.
I find it beyond hilarious that Blade called Loo’s buddy “Lug Nut.” That’s the greatest nickname that never was in the history of nicknames.
I think that nick is awesome, but nevertheless, I hope BuzzSaw isn’t angry. 🙂
Yes, the last thing we need is to piss BuzzSaw off some more.
“Lug Nut” is a great nickname. There’s a minor league team – the Lansing Lugnuts.
What game(s) are you guys going to? The Sunday game is a prime candidate for ESPN, I would think…
Loo, the Yankee game is on the 22nd of July, a Friday. I think the Boston game is on the 20th, a Wednesday.
Yep. Those are the days/games we will see. We talked about maybe trying to squeeze in the game on the 19th in Boston, depending on what time we get in. We need to get together when Blade and I are back there, Loo.
Been away from DFS for quite awhile . . . So, I asked Flav for advice/tips. Need to acknowledge Tommy Joseph suggestion (who is in 2 of 3 LUs) tonight. Gold baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Addendum . . . He just texted me with “your welcome.” lulz
it was his first career HR. Pence trade will now commence haunting us. 🙂
Continuing to produce (another hit).
I’ve said it before- I really like the Mets broadcasting crew.
Cohen, Darling, and Hernandez.
Did you catch the trivia question, zum? The answer was incorrect. There was a 4th guy who played with and was managed by Gil Hodges ……….Frank Howard. Who can we call?
Good catch, Loo!
Thanks, Zum. I missed on Aspromonte, but they omitted Howard – I double checked it.
They need to apologize publicly…
I like Mets radio crew.
I rarely do this with former Giants, but it’s going to be very easy for me to root for Timmy in LA.
I am rooting for him BIG TIME. I hope he does well, and we sign him to take Peavy’s slot in the rotation next year.
we need a brand new regular blogger here to start signing in as Lug Nut. That would make my day.
I will see if I can convince my friend RainMan (Mike) to blog as Lug Nut.
I’m warming up to Span…
Still don’t like Duffy in the 3 hole, though…
Is Bumgarner’s decreased velocity a concern?
Span nice steal!
Better catch! I’m warming up to him too Loo.Great to have the starting season LU in their all healthy!
I’m on a roll so I’m going all in on on another series sweep!
Update… Sharks kicking Blues rear heinies 3-O late in the 3rd period..
Any chance Snarkk orders an Old Milwaukee Light at the brewpub tonight?
I’m not in the Bpub tonight.
But, since there are only a declining, finite number of beers left that my liver can process, I’m not going to waste any liver time on that swampswill…
Did Crawford wake anybody up?
Is there a new thread for this game that I don’t know about?
lol.
Why didn’t Pagan go to third on that chopper?
I don’t think it was worth the risk, IMO.
Great jump by Pagan. When healthy, he’s actually pretty fast still.
On the steal.
Good to see Tommy Joseph hit his first career homer in the Phillies’ win tonight.
Ooops, didn’t see you guys mentioned him earlier in the DFS stuff.
If he goes onto the HOF as a 1bman, the Pence trade was still worth it…
I’m impressed with this Phils team. Watch their mgr get MOY.
Yeah, fun story so far, but it likely won’t last given all the one-run games they’ve won.
I will be in Phoenix tomorrow, might take in a Dbacks-Yanks game if I have time. Is Jeter still playing?… 😉
With one exception, I just can’t bring myself to root for the Yanks vs. the NL West teams. The one exception being the Bums.
The SD TV announcer (Enberg?) just said: “That’s a plump pussy right there”
They can’t fire him, he’s retiring after this season…
what the heck was the context? a cat walking on the dugout?
They were showing a picture of Duffy’s fat cat “Skeeter”…
ah
Mmmmm…plump pussy…
I’m happy for Timmy.
And LugNut.
Geeez. Aren’t there cheaper hotels in lower Manhattan or Mamaroneck? Take a train. Sleep on the fecking subway. Everyone else does.
I liked Mac’s idea for them…
which was what, hourly rates? the Super8 sounds like it’s straight outta Richard Price
I got the perfect place not too far from me:
http://photos.nj.com/photogallery/2010/02/moon_motel_on_route_9_in_howel.html
Sweet looking place there, Mac…can you check their rates for us?
I think Woody Allen is at a film festival in Europe dodging personal questions. Maybe he and Soon Yi will sublet for a few days…
Loo, if you’re feeling a little lonely on the Flap tonight, here’s some food for thought about our infamous pal, Ken Hunt, as you and I are probably the only 2 people in the world (or maybe just the NY/NJ area) who ever had a Ken Hunt glove as our first gloves ever: 6 years in the majors (’59 to ’64), played for Yanks, LA Angels, and Washington Senators. Appeared in 310 games, and for his career had 177 hits, 33 HRs, and 111 RBIs, with a lifetime BA of .226. Hit for power early in his career but after an aneurism in his right shoulder in ’62, he never regained his power stroke. But here’s his real claim to fame, according to Wiki: “He was the stepfather of child actor Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster on “The Munsters”) and appeared in one episode in 1965 titled “Herman the Rookie”.” Hunt is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fargo, North Dakota several feet away from Roger Maris, briefly his teammate on the 1960 Yankees. So there you have it.
Paul…that is phenomenal stuff! Thank you!
We should have a catch some day in his honor…
that is great stuff
I remember that episode. Herman was all power no speed. He shared nicknames with the LF wall in Boston…
I tweaked my back today, so I’ve self medicated. A few beers, martinis, a bunch of rum punches and here I am drunk as a skink. I’ll be lucky to put in four inning tonight. Damn floor, stay…
“drunk as a skink” is one of the greatest Flap lines of all time. It might be the greatest if you think about it……
and to think it started life as a typo
No ‘a’ in there, I think…
some of the best connected words of all time probably start out that way.
there’s no a? Is that possible? Because that would make it 20 times better….
stop slurring
Is that a skanky skink, or a Mexican skink? Hmmmm…No Fooling.
Great Zappa reference….. 🙂
they should have done an airBnB. Makes a million miles more sense. But so does Lyft and I keep taking cabs so what the fuck do I know?
or VRBO, which I used in Reykjavik
I told blade about airBnB and VRBO, etc weeks ago. He probably couldn’t find anything that worked…
I checked snarkk . . . You’re right. Coupled with a past bad experience with airBnB, I decided to go with a chain that per the reviews – were excellent, especially when considering the alternative 10 other places near by. Ugh.
I suggested Airbnb, but Blade said he had a bad experience. Maybe some plump pussy was involved…I dunno.
No, the place wasn’t as advertised and they indicated that I had damaged something, when it was an existing issue. Crazy bitch owned the place.
easy trivia question: Who is the only player to have played for the Mets, Yankees, Giants, Dodgers — and those were his only teams?
Hmmmm…..I’m drawing a blank.
Daryl Strawberry
Ah……
Damn, y’all have lightning fingers tonight. My 8:02 to Loo is already buried…. Oh, and as an addendum: the scary thing is, I actually remember that Munsters’ episode with Herman playing baseball….
Loo, to your 7:14, I offer this: If a Duffy were a Belt, a Gillaspie would be a Pill.
Reds reliever Steve Delabar issued four straight bases-loaded walks vs. the Indians tonight.
That’s insane.
If Delabar was wondering about what the Reds thought about him. Well, he should stop wondering…..
Were they intentional?
gold gold gold…this is the fckin hit parade here tonight
Who’s worse? Delabar for issuing the walks, or his manager for letting him do it 4X?
At least both will probably be in the record books…
I am sure that goose gossage came in for the giants and walked in a run (never forgot; he sucked for us) but can’t recall if he first loaded the bases, the jerk
It might be cheaper for blade and Chi to stay in Bangkok and commute by jet to NY every day for the games…
solid gold.
and cheaper sex
in a New Yorker magazine (May 9) profile on Paul Simon (I’m not a huge fan and can’t say why), they say he got the ‘Mother and Child Reunion’ title (recorded in Jamaica, we knew that), from a chicken and egg entree on a menu in Chinatown, ferfecksake!
Loo’s correct; it was “drunk as skink.”
Yeah I said it, and I have no recollection of that night!!
I was blowing a 2.0 easily so I staggered over to my boy Rex who drives a cab that says “Pit Bull Cab Co “and he got “drunk as skink” home safely!!
Yeah That minor league team the Lansing Lugnuts once had a lugnut giveaway night!
Bad idea, when they were losing the fans started tossing lugnuts on the field. What was worse the org collected all the lug nuts from the parked cars in the ball park parking lot so some fans were tossing their own lug nuts!!!
Ok part 1 & 2 are true ! The Lugnut parking lot caper not as much…
imagine what the Macon (Georgia) Whoopies might’ve done for their promos!
It went from comatose to you can’t get a fuckin’ word in here. WTF???
If anybody’s been to the ballpark in Phoenix, if one side of the yard is better viewing, let me know. That’s for the women. As for watching the game, I’m assuming it makes no difference…
Paul, awesome Ken Hunt story.
I know someone with last name of Hunt (different spelling) whose mother named him Michael, or, um, Mike…need I say more?
funnier than that clip was me in real life as a teacher falling for “who’s Dick Hertz??” boy, did they laugh; and I tried not to….
It’s kind of funny what sets Bum off. He is the oldest of old school.
Pawlie, during my 4 years living in various places in China, it was always quite humorous to see the attempts at English translation on some menus. That “mother and child reunion” actually makes some sense…. 🙂
I have a Chinese take out menu that actually says:
Open Every Day – Expect Holiday
You shoulda saved them. There are websites devoted to this. I saw ‘diced children’ crossed out and amended to ‘chicken’ at a restaurant in Morristown, NJ in the ’80s; should’ve taken the menu.
There’s was a day care center here called “The Magic Kingdoom” according to the sign.
They recently corrected it….
Pawlie, I’m with you on Paul Simon. I like a little of his stuff, but it’s nothing that ever excited me. And the marriage to Edie Brickel always seemed kind of odd. They had a domestic incident about a year ago.
Can’t knock his work with Garfunkel.
And I do love 50 Ways…
Yeah, the Simon and Garfunkel stuff was very cool. His solo stuff kind of lost me.
I mean, I can’t dispute his talent and impact but he ain’t no Leonard cohen. I better check the actual game. this is how terrible i am at a game.
Graceland is one of my favorites albums. I know somebody said he stole some lyrics or something for a song on it, or some such, but that’s neither here nor there for me. Everybody steals something in the music biz…
yeah, they talk about his alleged cultural appropriation in South Africa (whatever that might mean). I like his answer: no one complained when I paid three times the union scale.
So, are the unis the Friars are wearing tonight a throw-back of some sort, or is the yellow piping part of a new uni this year? I don’t like them…but WTF, it is the Padres…have never liked anything about that team.
Regarding the cost of a place to hang your hat in NYC, prices in Boston make the City look like the prices in Bangkok.
talk to one of Whitey Bulger’s boys; they can set you up nicely in Southie
I’ll do that! You got a number, brother?
1-888-IRE-4EVR
in July, pls do not eat your pizza slice with a knife and fork, as Bill Di Blasio foolishly did
Isn’t the only way to eat a slice of pie is to fold it?
only if enough grease on it to drool onto the paper plate
Posey’s BA is plunging; take him out of the 4 spot.
Maybe he misses those “off days” playing first base?
I’m fine with marketing stunts, but this one for Odor is tacky: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/15582739/double-frisco-roughriders-introduce-punch-commemorate-rougned-odor-fisticuffs
Just for the helluvit:
Ed Whitson.
And who was he traded for that is currently with the Giants?…
Wow…did not know that. Can’t believe I never heard him say it…
Duane Kuiper; Whitson was also involved in a Dave Roberts trade; didn’t they hate him in NY?
I dunno. I think I pretty much hated Whitson in San Francisco…
Yes. And he broke Billy Martin’s arm. Billy had it coming.
Crawford’s trip with the fam to the zoo (all over Twitter) musta paid off
Loo how would you set LU if Duffy isn’t #3? Posey bats 3rd, followed by Belt and Pence?
Who hits 8th?
I think Duffy should hit behind Crawford against righties.
I’ll let Bochy decide the rest.
With it being so damned close, I need to get down and take in a game in San Diego. Maybe next year we organize a Flapalooza there.
aren’t the mule shows in Tijuana nearby?
I thought mules come into the US from Tijuana…
Hey – Flapalooza in Dago, with a side trip to TJ…
It’s a nice park. Hard to beat the Gaslamp district before and/or after a game. Plenty of beer joints to do live, pre and post-game reviews on the beers…
Yeah you can’t beat the Gaslamp District for cool pubs& grubs. The Italian section has some old-fashion godfather feel to it in some of their joints,as well as great pastas, spaghetti,Veal Parmesan, good wines!
Great tacos, too, with the tortillas being made right in front of you.
Not in the Italian part. 🙂
Nice catch Belt! WTF, Belt was a QB???
BB9 channels JT…
Ah yes…number 6 was fun to watch…
Best I ever saw on that type of play…
I agree. He was also one of my daughter’s early heart-throbs. This before 55.
Nice grab from Belt to end inning. Panik should have had that gb from Wallace that started it.
In the Billy Martin book (great read thx Zum) he was expert sign stealer, something he learned in PCL I think.
There is a story about how he helped Yanks win a Series game by indicating location by raising his right leg while on 2b.
Wonder whether it was Craw or Posey who alerted Bum Myers might be trying to help his buddies.
For all you beer hounds out there. Anyone tried this? Sounds interesting…
http://tinyurl.com/jt4ha7d
No help from the Angels tonight. There was never any way that Weaver was going to beat Kershaw.
To Loo’s point of moving DuffMan in the order, he has better numbers (BA and OPS) in the six, seven and eight holes. Someone get Bochy on the horn…we need to talk.
OK I’ll say it right now.
Let Bum finish. Complete game shutout and set the bar for Cueto and Samrdz.
You take him out you are doing the Pads a favor.
YakLovers over the Cards tonight, in St Louie…Blade may be onto something…with, you know, the Sherpas being…legit.
They’re ahead of the Dodgers by a percentage point at the moment.
Any time the Dodgers are in third place I lqtm.
I am digging this NL-esque game. Fuck those 3.5 hour marathons, and extra frame games…on that note, I agree with WillieD…let Bum finish it.
Craw!
How was Craw thrown out with our ace thirdbase coach on top of things?
I think that ace 3B coach was busy scratching his nuts. Where is Flan when ya need him. Speaking of, he and Lunatic Fringe are playing in Rockin (Sacramento area) mid-June. I will definitely go check him out…have wanted to see him live for some time.
BB9 channeled himself to victimize poor Craw!
96 pitches for Bum. Definitely let him close this sucker out.
Right on…Bum will be out to pitch the 9th!
He’s hitting, He’s pitching “The Undertaker”will nail down a few more K’s on the coffin for the CG Shutout!!
Dominating tonight!
Kemp has gotten a reputation as a diminished fielder, but he always looks like a gold-glover against the Giants.
Kemp. Such a pole-smoker!
Ballgame! Nice work, Bum!
Bum just bit off to much of the plate!.
Like all of it on Kemp’s bomb..
No big deal except the shutout!
Rosario goes Sombero to finish it Giants Win..Theee Giants Win!!!!
MadBum finishes ’em off!
Although it wasn’t a blowout, this was a pretty stress-free game. I can’t remember the last time the Giants had one of those.
Stress-free wins are very cool. Nice to have one last night.
Hi all,
@ Dloo re Mad Bum Velocity. Yes….
Giants did hit some balls that were well struck that turned into outs last night, but the O still has some guys struggling. Kemp saved a few, so did the CF.
Pagan and Panik each 1 for last 12. Duffy an 0-5 he and Panik each hitting .240. Duffy OPS of .650
Posey had been in big slide before the big double to win the game vs. AZ.
Still, Giants only scored 14 runs in the 4 game series there, in a hitter friendly yard.
All players go through spells. As long as the wins continue to stack-up, and these “slumps” do not stretch into a month or more, not going to sweat it. I think these guys will be fine.
RE: Loo and SportsDude (good to see you…you should drop in more often) and Bumgarner’s velocity. I am not too worried about it. Sure did not seem to be an issue with the CG last night, but then again, the Padres suck (are last in almost every major offensive stat category).
His pitch velocity is definitely down:
http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=5524&position=P&pitch=FA
But the flip-side is that his ERA is as good as it has ever been with the exception of 2009, and his WHIP is currently 1.176. Ks to Walks is almost 4. Also, velocity, as we know, is not the “end all be all” when it comes to pitching (see Greg Maddux). As long as his results are there, I am not going to sweat it.
