A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Taking a Strong Hold of First Place in the NL West

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 23, 2016

This is an important 3 game diddy with SD. After these winnable games the Giants go on a tough 10 game road trip and then return home for a couple of high octane series’ v Boston and The Dopes.

So let’s get these 3, ok? With the pitching we have and our 6th in the league scoring offense, I’m feeling pretty confident. Well, with the first 2 anyway.

Truth be told, I’m a little surprised we are ranked 6th in the league in runs scored. We are 3rd weakest in home runs, ahead of only Philly and Atlose-a. I was surprised to see us ranked so highly in SB category (4th with 28). Still, it doesn’t feel like we play the speed game. Either way, runs are runs and we’ve 198 of them. Philly’s only scored 142 and they’re 6 games over .500. Just something to consider…..

As usual, and it will always be this way for us, it comes down to pitching and defense…..

Yes, pitching and defense are key for our team, but the thing I like about our hitting is how we spread it around. Even with the streakiness of some of our hitters, each of our starters has 10+ RBIs. Brown also has 10, hell the Shark has 5. It may not seem like the conga line is up and dancing but 6 of our starters have scored 20+ times so something is moving to the conga beat.

Speaking of Philly, how about Ryan Howard’s line? 8 HRs but only 18 RBIs. He is hitting .161/.233/.381, but my favorite is 42Ks in 118 ABs. Did the Giants ruin him or just expose him back in 2010? I wonder if he sees beards in his nightmares?

Giants currently are exactly where they belong in the NLW and they just took a series from the leading team in the league. Yes, it’s important to not let down the pressure against the Dagos and to use the series as a springboard to face that challenging but not necessarily daunting roadie. Hitters need to get that conga-line in gear. Much of our scoring has followed a schizoid trajectory with blowouts and then squeezers. Not a lot of consistency. Steadily racking up 4.5 runs per game average would translate to a smooth 90 win season.

I still, unlike many of you, am not tripping on the streaky hitting. Just win baby, and keep that top spot in the standings. Hey, if our boys can win a fucking World Serious with the line-up they had in 2010, then ANYTHING can happen…

MLB power rankings have Giants now at 4th, behind Cubs, Nats and Baaahstin. Though even Pence, Belt and Panik are rated no better statistically than upper-mediocre to date; those 3 top Starters, each with 6 wins, are tied for 4th in the NL. Cubbies and Nats each have 4 in the upper brackets, though the likes of Lackey and Roarke are probably elevated up there by the slipstreams generated by their top guys. Continued progress by Cain would match us up with anybody’s rotation. Peavy, sorry to admit, has only the second worst ERA amongst league starters. Giants do need to maintain focus vs the Pads and hopefully rediscover their congalinearity vs. Dago pitching.

Sorry, off the hook all weekend. I posted this on an old thread . . .

I’ll tell you one thing, ‘Dog, when the Warriors were in the middle (and at the end) of their 17 year playoff drought, the fans were still filling the Arena, and the fans were suffering along with them. The Kings? Ehhhhh. Sort of.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on May 23, 2016 at 10:03 am

Absolutely. W’s fans in general have paid their dues and stuck with the team. That’s what concerns me a bit about the move to SF. Oakland is a passionate basketball town, and I wonder if the fans attending games in a fancy new arena will be the same way.

I remember quite a bit of griping about AT&T it’s first few years, with complaints of the nouveau riche fans behind the plate with cell phones and chardonnay there to see and be seen and not really giving a crap about the games. AT&T has clearly developed into a raucous and rowdy bunch. I remember fans at the 2002 WS being subdued. In ’10, ’12, & ’14 they were rowdy as hell and were a big part of the Giants winning the titles.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 23, 2016 at 9:26 am

And this TOTALLY bears repeating . . . (zzzzzzzz)

Bass, the good news is the team is winning DESPITE Posey basically sucking wind so far. He will get rolling at some point, as will the rest of the crew. Sure, I get furious as well when they hibernate at the plate, and I’ve gone back and forth with James over this same thing. What he says is bad pitching I call a systematic failure of the team to drive in runs when ducks are on the pond.

The pendulum SHOULD swing back the other way at some point (I’ll give that to James!) and the team should continue to rack up wins and drive in runs a little more consistently. Yeah, we’d all like to see 6 runs per, but as Flav has so eloquently pointed out, this team does not have a lot of power. And what little speed they do have seems to be of the caught-stealing/thrown-out-at-3rd variety. So we aren’t going to mash teams into the ground with 4 bombs and crooked numbers across the board. We are going to grind shit out as we have.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 23, 2016 at 10:17 am

And in kind, I will repeat my response from the end of the last thread …

Chuck, what you say makes a lot of sense. Also, James & Big Flav too. I understand we are not a power team and that we play half our games in a difficult park; I have mentioned here numerous times how much I covet a big power bat; I accept it ain’t in the cards for us. And yes, Posey et al are giving me fits, especially with the duck hunting opportunities.

I’m actually pleased with the overall results lately, who in their right mind couldn’t be? A win is win, by 1 run or 101.

Worrying that a weak offense will put an inordinate amount of pressure on pitching (which is arguably the best in MLB at present) to the point where they get out of whack is what I do. And I do it well. Stressing too that allowing even one run can result in an insurmountable lead puts the screws to a lot of departments, defense included — I thought for sure Span was gonna kill himself last night.

I admit I’m a worrier. It’s just my life experience: bad shit happens. I accept that it is quite the opposite for many others. I congratulate them.

  6. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on May 23, 2016 at 9:56 am

Then topic of runs scored and the team’s league ranking on that front has come up a few times lately. I’d be curious to know if anyone has checked out the home/road splits for runs scored. Anecdotally, the Giants seem to really wake up offensively when the hit the road, like they did in AZ a week ago. They were hitting the ball all over the yard.

On the surface it does seem like they struggle to score runs, but I think it’s because they do struggle to score runs at home. When the restraints of the chilly, cavernous ballpark are lifted, they seem to do okay. 4.6 runs/game overall is pretty good, but the perception persists that they have trouble scoring.

    Thoughts? Opinions?

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 23, 2016 at 10:25 am

That has been my perception LJ … they have trouble scoring, especially when given opportunities to do so. And yes, they seem to do better away from the chilly confines of home but that sorta makes sense. I was never as cold living in NYC as I was living in SF. I’m wondering if the chill is what fucked Peavy this year? Everybody has their limits. Certainly the aging process doesn’t help. Interesting that his best outing was in AZ while he was supposedly running a fever.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on May 23, 2016 at 10:41 am

Actually the run scored splits are pretty close. In 24 Home games they’ve scored 102 runs, in 22 Away games they’ve scored 96.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on May 23, 2016 at 10:50 am

We lead the NL with the fewest Ks, we are 2nd for the most Walks, 4th for the most hits and 2nd for the most Sac Flies. So even though we’re 6th in Runs scored, we put guys on the bases and we put the ball in play. Which makes me think some of those line drive outs will start to fall in and we will score more runs.

      • Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin said, on May 23, 2016 at 12:21 pm

I think I posted this a couple of threads ago, but the Giants also lead in hitting into double plays. which shows they are hitting the ball, just at someone. It is hard to complain too much when your team is in 1st place with a 4 game cushion. Just my take

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 23, 2016 at 12:41 pm

I am with you, Clown. To each their own…glad I am not a worrier…I have always been that bubbly-assed glass half-full guy. But seriously, thanks for the numbers. Even before you shared them, I have said numerous times that I am not tripping on the hitting. Sure, I get frustrated as hell when they cannot get a run home with a runner on 3rd and zero or one out, but I remind myself to look at the big picture…just win the game, and keep at or close to the top of the standings.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 23, 2016 at 10:10 am

When they do score, it seems they score a lot. I had it all broken down a couple weeks ago how they lose low scoring games and win higher scoring ones. That has changed recently though.

  8. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 23, 2016 at 10:34 am

We have 44 games to go before the AS break. An even split of 22 home, 22 away. Interestingly, in that span, we play only one team that currently has a better record than us. Boston. And we only play two games against them and those 2 games are at home. Things could change but seems like we have a relatively “light” schedule … I’m expecting huge success 😉

  9. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 23, 2016 at 10:46 am

Being 4th in SB sort of surprised me too. Of the 28 here’s the break down.

    Spahn – 6
    Duffy – 5
    Pagan – 5
    Tomlinson – 4
    Panik – 3
    Crawford – 2
    Blanco – 2
    Buster ‘Racecar’ Posey – 1

I guess Pence is under strict orders not to run. His issues staying on the field are a bit of a concern.

This got me thinking about SBs so I had to look. Did you know that the last time anyone stole 80 bases was 1988. V Coleman swiped 81 in the NL. The Rickey with 93 for the junior circuit. Yeah, yeah stolen sabermetrics yadda, yadda. I just remember the early 80’s and the excitement over the stolen base.

Here’s a fun blurb on it from 2013 for those that are inclined.

@Chuck—are you saying that over the past 25 years, Warrior fans have been more loyal and have packed the arena at a better rate than Kings fans???? I don’t know about that claim. I’d love to see the stats on that one. I would guess that Kings fans would blow Warrior fans out of the water on those numbers.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on May 23, 2016 at 12:33 pm

I have my money on the Warriors on that question…they were filling the arena in the late 80s with crap teams till TMC….

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on May 23, 2016 at 12:43 pm

I think Dog is right. I had an uncle who had season tickets at Arco Arena during the late eighties and nineties. This was back during the Wayman Tisdale days when the Kings were so bad they made the Warriors look good. I remember him saying that the Kings nearly sold out every game back then. They actually had a waiting list for season tickets and he eventually sold his rights for a nice profit.

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on May 23, 2016 at 12:49 pm

Likewise we went to a fair amount of Warriors games during those years and those games were far from sell outs. Unless they were playing the Lakers, Knicks, Celtics or Bulls. I think I told the story of us sneaking down and sitting in some sweet court side seats only to be kicked out by none other than Ronnie Lott. Who was very cool about it by the way.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 23, 2016 at 1:34 pm

Yeah, I remember doing that a few times myself Wilco . . . Warrior games were always an easy score back in the late 70s, 80s, and 90s.

I think SanDog is right, albeit, it is difficult to find records going back further than 2001. Here the Kings were 100% filled until 2007, with the Warriors under 100% during the same time period (01 to 07). Warriors did NOT ascend to 100% until the 2014 season.

If we win the first two games in this series, Peavy should be diagnosed with a surprise illness. Pads pretty much suck so giving one of our young guns a surprise start when Pads are not ready for it may keep the young gun calm and give him some confidence…

Regarding attendance figures between the Warriors and Kings. Here is a start. This is a ten year stretch from 2001- 2011. Warriors ranked 15th…Kings 23rd. I am going to keep digging to find more comprehensive numbers, but I doubt seriously that the Kings have better numbers than the Warriors, and if they do (over 25 years) I doubt it is substantial. The Kings get the draw because outside of the RiverKitties, they are the ONLY professional team in town (okay, there have been a few soccer and hockey minor league clubs).

Also, you are looking at total numbers Chi. Only thing that counts really IMO is filling the arena, which the Kings did every year from 2001 through 2007. As I said above, the Warriors didn’t do that until 2014.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 23, 2016 at 1:00 pm

True, Blade. Home numbers are the ones for which we are looking. I really do not care one way or another. The Kings franchise has been a mess for a really long time.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 23, 2016 at 1:02 pm

Your point about being the only game in town has credence also. Couple that with a smaller arena (apparently), it is difficult to say for certain who is “most loyal.” All’s I know is that when a team performs, then the fans come out (unless you’re the fucking Oakland A’s . . . lulz).

Good read on the article you shared, Kev. The only thing that made me cringe (and I am NOT surprised) is this quote by Bochy in regards to Peavy, and Bochy having him on a “short leash:”

“I don’t have a leash on him right now so I don’t know how long a leash I have. That’s my confidence in Jake. The five starters are going to continue to go and, no, we’re not moving anyone around.”

So, is the problem with our rotation purely the back “20 percent” (Peavy, only)? Has Cain found his groove and going to be more consistent rest of the year?

Fuck, I wish they would just give Jake his gold watch already, give him a good pat on the ass, say thanks, and send him on his way to his farm in LA (Lower Alabama). Hey, Peavy could slot right in with Flan and his Lunatic Fringe.

Maybe in a tie with Durham is Brett Butler, who I really dislike as a person, but between 1988 and 1990, Butler averaged 106 runs, 174 hits, and 42 stolen bases. Awesome center field for the Giants 1989 NL Pennant winning squad and was the perfect table setter for Will Clark, Kevin Mitchell, and Matt Williams.

Take of these numbers as you will, but it shows that at least tickets purchased was pretty similar across the board. Sac had the advantage of being new to the area (and the ONLY pro game in town as noted) for its first 6-8 years. Then they got good around the late 90s. The Dubs were horseshit from 92 to 08 and still did well attendance-wise. The Kings dropped off pretty hard once the Peja / Bibby / Divacs days ended and the ownership was trying to get out of town.

“I don’t have a leash on him right now so I don’t know how long a leash I have. That’s my confidence in Jake. The five starters are going to continue to go and, no, we’re not moving anyone around.”

Translation: “We’re paying the guy $15 million this season, so he’s going to keep starting for a while.”

If this ends up costing the Giants a playoff spot, Bochy and the front office are going to get roasted by the fans on this one.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 23, 2016 at 2:37 pm

If Cain continues to put quality starts out most of the time, I cannot see Jake being the key to us either making or not making the playoffs. But if we miss by ONE GAME, then you have to wonder.

  23. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 23, 2016 at 2:12 pm

Here’s some “fun” facts about Jake:
This season so far, 1-5, with an 8.21 ERA, and 1.9 WHIP.
It’s very close to his career playoff record of 1-5 and 7.98 ERA.
In the ’14 World Series he was 0-2, with a 12.79 ERA.

No, you’re wrong GH . . . Durham’s average season as a Giant was .276, 15 HR, and 31 2B. The season we won 100 games, he hit .285 with 30 doubles. He was signed to be a piece of the championship puzzle. It’s not his fault the front office said “fuck it” about adding any other pieces.

    Welcome back, Matt.
I have also been telling anyone who would listen that the wins in AZ and SD were nice, but the real test would be back home at AT&T and we done good. WOW.
Lovely? nope – gorgeous it was. Our #5 beating their #2. sweet.

Defense is always less streaky than offense and it appears our Gmen are settling in for a long summer of lights out play.
Hitting? Ouch! 16 hits with RISP in the last 98 opportunities. “We’re having a tough time offensively,” manager Bruce Bochy confirmed.
SF knows how to win low scoring games.

Kudos to Span and Parker for joining the fray and to Buster P for his awesome pop fly catch yesterday.

Cubbie fans are butt hurt about a bad call that didn’t get them a man on first in the 8th. I’d be more worried about some of the frustration on Madden’s face when he looks into the 3rd base dugout. His strong management skills looked ordinary with Mr. Bruce in the house.

I used to like to say that the Giants made both the best and the worst free agent signings in the history of pro sports, and they were both named Barry. I still think that statement is pretty damn close to dead-on, though Barry Z redeemed himself a bit at the end. (He didn’t TOTALLY REDEEM himself like Lloyd Christmas did when he traded the muttmobile for a mini-bike, but he did redeem himself to a certain degree in my book)

Warrior attendance numbers are better than I would have guessed, but I still would like to see % of capacity rates for the two teams over the years before I call a truce to this epic Sactown/Oaktown throwdown.

Which reminds me of another reason I’m not wild about the Warriors. They are an OAKLAND team, and I don’t like Oakland teams. I don’t like the Raiders, I don’t like the A’s, and I don’t like the Warriors.
Yeah, yeah, I know the Warriors played for years at the CIvic Center with those sweet uniforms with the numbers in the middle of a cable car silhouette, but for my sports-fan existence that goes back to about 1970, the Warriors have been an Oakland team. (Although it was super cool when they played some NBA Finals games at the Cow Palace after the Ice Capades took priority in the Coliseum) The Ice Capades trumped the NBA FInals! That was a different era, my friends.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 23, 2016 at 3:44 pm

Ahhh, but they played in SF from 63-71 or something like that. Saw a lot of games at the Cow Palace. The Cow Palace was actually their home, though they did go on the ‘road’ and play in SJ and the Civic from time to time. . . . Still and all they were the San Francisco Warriors to me. The fact that they moved sucked balls (just like the forty fucking niners) but what do you do? At least they stayed in the area . . .

Just heard Draymond Green not suspended. That’s good.
I’m not totally sure he did that kick on purpose; you can look at it from several angles, and they’ll show something different each way. It’s not outside the realm of believability he was flailing arms and legs to get a call from the ump. Second, the NBA would be seen purposefully handing a win to the OKC if they grounded Draymond. Can’t do that. If somebody throws a punch, well, then that’s probably a suspension…

  37. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 23, 2016 at 6:33 pm

Tommy Joseph bombs away again. Nice to see him making something of his limited opportunities. And Snarkk, I tend to agree with you though I feel pretty confident that was intentional. But would I suspend him over “pretty confident?” No. NBA did the right thing although twitter seems to think they completely blew it.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 23, 2016 at 6:41 pm

If a guy throws hands, that’s pretty unequivocal. Apparently, per radio they reviewed previous videos where Draymond kicks and flails to get foul calls on shot attempts, so this wasn’t something new…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 23, 2016 at 6:56 pm

if it were just the one kick, I’d agree it was probably just him flailing a leg out to get a call. But we are talking about Adams calling the Warrior guards “monkeys” (and I don’t think everyone bought that was an innocent slip up), then the next game Draymond is screaming into the back of his neck AND he did knee him in the balls that game too. That one looked accidental. But there is a pattern of Green going after this dude, specifically his ball sack (which I find fairly hilarious actually).

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 23, 2016 at 6:59 pm

      • sandog's avatar sandog said, on May 23, 2016 at 9:14 pm

My brother would beg to differ with you on that one. Davv was his guy. Yeah, Hart had much better offensive numbers, but Davy had a decades long run in the organization including a stint as manager. (Albeit not a great run)

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 23, 2016 at 9:21 pm

And some of the current Giants knew Davenport.

It’s disrespectful. It’s the least they can do. They gave out 20,000 Phillipino hats tonight and are wearing AIDS ribbons. Maybe tomorrow night every Russian with chicken pox gets a free tee-shirt.
But fuck the great Jim Ray Hart…

      I don’t think it’s happening man.

Yeah, but JRH didn’t return as manager for almost all of a 100-loss season.

If it comes down to this, the Giants’ first pinch-hitter should be MadBum.

I am tired of this continual run scoring constipation.
Take a damn team wide dose of salts or something, and score some damn runs!…

Jesus fucking christ. I am going to start sounding like Lisle! Another inning, another runner stranded in scoring position. But, to my earlier post, I still say the Gigantes pull this one out…

Chi … You know how I love to eat copious amount of crow … I sure hope you are right … Me, I’m not feeling it tonight … am I ever though?

Krukow commented on the drawn-in outfield on Pagan: “They’re playing him like he’s a weak-hitting pitcher.” Krukow acted like it’s shocking. It’s not shocking.

  68. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 23, 2016 at 9:36 pm

What’s really pathetic , the Sharks scored 6 times, the Pads& Giants have combined for 5 hits total and “ZERO” runs!!

another reason I dug seeing Specs in LF. He’s had good ABs lately and Kruk said he is fastest Giant, not saying a whole lot but…

definitely remember ABA Oaks, where Barry jumped to play for (iirc) his father in law. Lot of cool players over there including my first look at Warren Armstrong later Jabali. cool player awesome slam dunks with left hand that I know we’ve talked about before. ABA like AFL tons of good players.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 23, 2016 at 9:47 pm

Didn’t Pat Boone own the Oaks, while they lasted?

Ya know, I wonder if some of this run score constipation has to to with the weather conditions. It has been cold as crap in a lot of night games at ATT so far. Last Friday night, I was freezing my nords off out there. It was cold as hell and breezy. Of course, that was the 8-1 game, so it didn’t seem to bother the Cubs…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 23, 2016 at 9:47 pm

I have made a lot of comments about the inability to squeeze across a run tonight, but seriously, I am not tripping on this team. 10 of the last 11 are wins. First place by 4-plus…Life is good.

  71. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 23, 2016 at 9:40 pm

Speaking of constipation Snarkk, anyone know what Constipation Stance Aaron Rowand is doing these day?
Maybe “Butt Sliding off a toilet seat”

  72. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 23, 2016 at 9:44 pm

I think it was last night I pointed out that it’s curious that Fake Skeevy’s best start was in AZ on a day he was supposedly sick & had a fever … Of course, that’s not about hitting but the cold must affect everyone … It certainly seems to stymie the southern boys like Posey.
