A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Leave Durant Alone

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 5, 2016

Truly not understanding all the vitriol across the internet about Durant signing with the Warriors. This man gave 8 years of his career to Oklahoma and on the day he decides to exercise his independence (on July 4th no less) he gets beaten down and destroyed for doing so.

Why should Durant have to stay in Oklahoma? I wouldn’t want to work there. He’s earned the right to go wherever he wants. And what’s wrong with joining the most unselfish team in the league that plays a brand of team ball that ANYONE would want to be a part of?

So what if he’s joining a good team? Are you only allowed to exercise your free agent rights if you join a bad team? The Warriors didn’t win it all last year. If Durant takes them over the top, so be it. The goal is to put together the best team and try to win it all.

What am I missing here?

I think Mac said it first, about if you can’t beat them…he knows joining Warriors puts him and them right back in everyone’s sights as team they most like to beat. I’m sure his respect for Kerr and West had a lot to do with this too.

Only issue for GS is depth of inside players behind Pachulia Green and Iguodala.
Looney spent most of year in D-League, so hard to imagine what he can do at NBA level.
Kid they drafted is also hurt and unlikely to play anywhere before end of calendar year.

Leaves them awfully thin for interior D and rebounding which was big part of what allowed Cavs to overtake them.

Kerr of course must be ecstatic to have another premier scorer to work into an offense. Big bonus too for Durant’s ability to get to FT line, and he knocks them down when he does.

Jenkins compared the offensive abilities of their core 6 to that of the old Knicks 70s teams, interesting.

It’s the internet. You expect normal civility? People are retarded. Apparently it is verboten to try and realize the goal of winning a championship. I mean its not like Kevin Garnett went to Boston to chase his dream, or Shaq to the Lakers, or Wilt to the Lakers, or Chamberlain to the Lakers, or Bron/Bosch to the Heat, or . . .

I am truly loving (and a bit amazed) that our San Francisco Rivercats just keep on winning. Peavy with another gem yesterday. Early in the season when he was mired in sucktittude, I was thinking he might be done, but he has proven the naysayers wrong. And even when I was down on him during that early part of the season, I still liked the dude, his attitude, passion, and willingness to battle when the chips are down. Peavy would be a fun dude with whom to hang-out with and knock back a few cold ones.

Bum on bump tonight. Let’s see if he can get back into a winning groove.

I’ll give props to Peavy where due. The guy was utter garbage for the first 10 or so starts, looked done. Then, he somehow puts it together. Maybe releasing info on his investment debacle cleared his head. Anyway, I’m not figuring he’ll average 7 full the rest of the year, but his last 8 starts yield an ERA around 2.30, so I’ll take that anyday from the guy who is #4.5 in the rotation. Now, if Cain ever comes back with some health and a 6 inning arm, the squad will be looking good for the stretch run…

On paper, Dubs should be a fun fun team watch next season. Who knows if they can win it all, the season is long, and injuries always play a role. Durant has had 3 foot surgeries, so there is that risk. He’s a free agent, he can go anywhere he wants. The pundits piling on have to justify their soapbox, so going negative is always easier and gets the attention. I consider 8 years in Oklahoma punishment enough…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 5, 2016 at 11:23 am

I am sure the Warriors medicos did their due-diligence on his injuries/surgeries. No way they throw him an ~50 mil two year deal without being satisfied that all is good, regardless of how damned good he is.

So, the Warriors have him locked-up for two years. He is only 28. He has won three or four scoring titles. All good baby.

And on top of that Flav, what the critics like Stephen A. Smith are saying is that Durant has to stay with a ball hog like Westbrook. He is not allowed to do anything else…and I think that argument by West to Durant of why the f do you want to play alongside that for another year just to lead to not another championship for OKC….

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 5, 2016 at 10:58 am

And I do think Blade/wilco are right–you replace guy like Barnes who shoots 8 times in 30+ minutes with Durant, who takes 25, others will have to sacrifice. rare enough for NBA they are ready to do that to win.
LBron was so hot to get Kevin Love but he won’t actually throw him the ball so he can shoot.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 5, 2016 at 11:42 am

Thanks Willie . . . Means a lot coming from you – I know you know hoops. I’m not saying it can’t work, but chemistry is a big thing that gets short thrift all the time.

By the by, you Flappers all recall who the Warriors were also going for when they signed Iggy way back when (see my post below)????? Yep, that’s right, Dwight Howard. Ugh.

Here’s an excerpt from an article describing the deal that thankfully did not go down . . .

“The Warriors emerged from long shot to viable option after meeting with Howard on Monday. But despite adding swingman Andre Iguodala, Howard chose to pair up with All-NBA guard James Harden to become the next great center for the Rockets. Houston can offer the same four-year, $88 million contract the Warriors could offer but Texas doesn’t have state taxes, which means Howard can keep more of his money.

That means Golden State will keep starting center Andrew Bogut.

About an hour before this news, the Warriors have reached a four-year deal worth $48 million with Iguodala, multiple sources confirmed.”

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 5, 2016 at 2:50 pm

Well, Dwight Howard on his best day is not even close to Durant. I think things will work out fine. Green will probably get less shots (as he should when you add a shooter like Durant). They played a great brand of ball beforehand, with everyone willingly sharing the ball. I will be surprised if that changes dramatically. I love the Durant signing.

  16. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 5, 2016 at 11:34 am

On a much smaller scale, this reminds me of the venom that Andre Iguodala got from the Denver media and fans when he reached a four-year deal worth $48 million with the Warriors. Not certain if any Flappers recall that the Nuggets offered him a five-year contract worth $60 million — with $52 million guaranteed. That’s right, the Nuggets presented a more lucrative offer than did Golden State.

Worse, if you all recall, the Warriors also beat the Nuggets in the first round playoff series. This after the Nuggets won 57 games during the season. In short, they were bitch slapped twice. To make matters even worse, Iggy said this, “Mainly, the coach and the culture, the environment,” Iguodala told the Mercury News. “I feel like they have a good culture there, a lot of great guys, great locker room. The way they’ve got those guys playing with such confidence, that comes from the coach. The way those young guys were playing against us (in the playoffs), that’s confidence. I saw Klay Thompson running full speed down the court, caught the ball, took two steps and shot the 3. His feet weren’t even set. That comes from coaching. I want to play with that kind of confidence.”

You have to understand that the Nuggets were an ascending franchise. Shortly afterwards, Karl and the GM left. Postscript was this tweet:

After Iguodala’s deal with Golden State was announced, Nuggets guard Ty Lawson, who was hoping Iguodala would return, tweeted: “Smh!!!!” (Shaking my head.) Then he added: “Business is business.”

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 5, 2016 at 12:13 pm

Iguodala is widely credited as being smartest guy on the team. In scrimmages it’s reported whoever he has with him, that team wins.
I do remember that series too. Smart as he is (was) he figured out what could happen if he came here.

The shots are just a math problem. The team isn’t getting more of them because Durant is there–others are getting less so he can do what he does, all to help them win.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 5, 2016 at 11:46 am

Durant is not going to have a problem meshing with this team. The OKC game was 2 guys and nothing. And one of them didn’t pass.

And yeah Blade, you are spot-on. Iggy went out of his way to come here after getting beat by OBD. He could easily tell from the other side how this team played and how they won.

And don’t forget, Curry, Iggy, and KD all played together on the 2010 world basketball tourney USA team.

  19. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 5, 2016 at 12:03 pm

Opinions on the Durant signing won’t fully shake out until the season gets going and we can see how the whole meshes together. I said yesterday that I think all parties will adjust, others disagreed. I can see that argument. My point is that Durant took that many shots in OKC mostly because he had to. I don’t think he’s coming to Oakland expecting that nothing will change and he’ll be free to hoist up as many shots as he wants. T repeat myself, I don’t think anyone can make the case that he’s a prima donna. That dubious distinction would more aptly be applied to Westbrook.

I think he, Steph and Klay will work and adjust. KD will learn to work within Kerr’s system. He’s way too good of a basketball player not to. He’s not just some one-dimensional scorer, a la Carmelo, he’s the complete package.

The burden on the Splash Bros will be eased as will the burden on KD be eased because of the Splash Bros. Green will be more able to focus on what he does best, defense, playmaking and rebounding, all while taking shots when the opportunity presents itself. I don’t think you can underestimate the challenge that spreading the scoring among three fabulous offensive talents will present to opposing defenses. Shut down Steph (good luck when he’s healthy)? Great, you get KD and Klay, etc., etc. This is going to be a huge problem for every team they play. I really believe that egos won’t be a factor, especially after losing the finals. All parties concerned will be rabid for a title.

Lanes to the basket will be more wide open for everyone and don’t forget that KD is also an excellent passer. He’s long, he rebounds and he’s perfectly capable of playing solid defense. He scores inside, outside and from the midrange.

Like Willie said above, my biggest concerns are also interior D and to a lesser extent interior rebounding. I say to a lesser extent because KD is a good enough rebounder to offset Bogut’s departure and everyone knows Dray’s capabilities in that area. Bench depth is my other concern, but Iggy and Livingston are still there. A few more pieces will need to be plugged in, and on the cheap, but I’m confident in Myers’ and Kerr’s ability to do so.

What you end up with is a team that is very difficult, or damn near impossible, to defend. I think easy shots are going to become even more available than they have the past 2 years.

And they will be fun to watch.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 5, 2016 at 12:25 pm

Pachulia is a professional and averaged 26 minutes and almost 10 boards last year. I think they could still add Varajao for a couple of million and see what these two rookies might have. David West is also out there as a big body and signed last year for almost nothing and why wouldn’t he again. Just say Ndyaie….

During that game Lou Seal comes by in his little car and they were tossing out 50th anniversary shirts. This shirt sails right through my sons hands and I catch it. He was like “give me my shirt.” I was like, bullshit, if you had caught the shirt, it would have been yours. He was cool about it and I bought him a brew to make him feel better!

Like I said a few days ago, I’m glad some of our players are not on the team. It gives them a needed break. Equally important, it will fuel their revenge against this fucked up LU that has only one of our position players playing. I’m certain that the 2 Brandons will have an even better half after this injustice.

By the by, getting tired of TOO MANY RELIEVERS BEING ON THE TEAMS.

Agree. I have felt that way all along, going back to when we first saw him out there. So, it really is not a stretch when they are ready to shift Posey to 1st, that Belt will end up in LF.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 5, 2016 at 7:52 pm

Actually Chi, I know quite a few of the posters at the Post and they are all hard core fans of baseball. They would love to root for the Rockies but the team’s record since its 1993 inception has been poor. Couple that with a clueless owner and a manager with only high school experience prior to this gig – they’re pretty pissed off about the state of baseball in Colorado. Consequently, when I do post, I don’t “troll” the site and actually, try to be diplomatic about their team. I usually never post when they are playing the Giants, especially if we are winning. Why pile on?

  40. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 5, 2016 at 7:40 pm

If anyone has already brought this up, apologies. It SUCKS that Crawford didn’t get the nod, even as a back-up to the AS game. Not that I really give a rat’s ass about the AS game these days, but it would be a great acknowledgement for Craw. I mean come on, he wins the Silver Slugger AND Gold Glove last year and doesn’t get a sniff at being an all star. Fucking starting IF is ALL cubbies. Talking about the fine folks of Chitown stuffing the ballot box. Crawford undoubtedly should be an all star. Just one more reason to say fuck the AS game.

This day in ’87, Kevin Mitchell got traded to the Giants and made his debut by hitting two bombs. I’m sure most of you Flappers remember that bare handed catch he made along the LF line somewhere — St. Louis? — that was awesome. Then, I got to thinking the other day, watching some MLB highlights — there are tons of regular fans making barehanded catches of screaming or semi-screaming foul balls, while holding babies, beers, and or both. So, was Mitchell’s barehanded grab really that big of a deal?…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 5, 2016 at 7:51 pm

All I know is that it was pretty fucking cool (and I was watching that game when it happened), and when I see it, it is still pretty damned cool.

    • sandog's avatar sandog said, on July 5, 2016 at 7:53 pm

It was pretty cool and funny how he got twisted around after taking a bad route and then bailed himself out with that grab, but yeah, the one hand grab by itself is not super difficult.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 5, 2016 at 7:54 pm

Yeah, I think it is how he got twisted around and recovered that makes it that much cooler.

      • sandog's avatar sandog said, on July 5, 2016 at 7:55 pm

Now that I watched it, he simply overran it. Still pretty amazing.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 5, 2016 at 8:04 pm

It was in St. Louis. He had overrun the ball so it was a last ditch effort stab and after he caught the ball he ran through the BP door in the OF while holding on to the ball.
I’m guessing that since you’re asking about it 29 years later, it probably does make it a big deal.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 5, 2016 at 8:04 pm

Maybe I’m getting carried away, but I think Crawdad has been one of the most valuable players in the entire National League so far this year.
On another note, Steven Brault made Grossmont High proud tonight. He was on a strict pitch count, but only gave up one earned run in four innings and had a solid single to center field in his only at bat. He was just called up suddenly 48 hours ago, but the Pirate broadcast gave all kinds of information about him and had a good interview with this family in the stands. Funny note, he forgot to bring his glove with him, so he had to borrow Jeff Locke’s glove.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 5, 2016 at 7:53 pm
