Foretelling The Future

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 18, 2016

The only good thing  that’s come out of this Summer Slide is that it’s turned me into a master prognosticator.

We get the bases loaded with no out and our best hitters coming up?

I know what’s about to happen…..

A runner is rounding second and headed in the direction of dumbass Roberto?

I know what’s about to happen…..

There is a play at the plate?

I know what’s about to happen……

Cain loses it completely and he starts walking guys?

I know what’s about to happen……

We get a 4 run lead?

I know what’s about to happen…….

The rest of this season?

I know what’s about to happen…..

McCovey Chroncle proved Roberto Kelly has been an effective 3B coach. Remember him sending Buster yesterday? Safe.
Stick with facts, please. This is a rough patch, very rough, but don’t use trumpish claims, please.

I beg to differ. I watch almost every damned game, and Kelly has failed more often than not in evaluating the situation with runners. He needs to find a new job after this season…he must be replaced. I have ZERO confidence in him.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 18, 2016 at 10:12 am

the numbers he cites do nothing to support his conclusion. How to tell Kelly had anything to do with it or was just passive factor while someone scored or took extra base?
Usually the baserunner has pretty good idea whether to go or not…unlike Kelly.

However, everyone here has at least 4 examples recently where Kelly was clearly at fault and cost the Giants runs in close games they lost. Not anecdotal and Brisbee saw them too.

There are lots of things wrong with that McCovey’s Chron article starting with the fact that there is no context and when it comes to this topic you have to look at the context. It demands it. And that alone is enough to invalidate the article. But if you think Roberto Kelly is a good third base coach, I am totally 100% fine with you believing that.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 18, 2016 at 9:11 am

Whoever wants to believe Kelly is a good third base coach can believe it until the fucking cows come home, but I am in violent disagreement. He needs to be replaced after this year.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 18, 2016 at 8:08 am

Kelly’s ineffectiveness is like the whole umpire argument against replay a few years back. Yes, they get 98% of the calls right. Why? Because 98% of the calls are fucking EASY. Fuck up those 2% all the time, and you suck. Regardless of the other 98%.

Same thing with R Kelly. More often than not, sending the runner isn’t a problem. When it is a close play, Kelly has been invariably wrong.

See, Tom? This disproves the article.

Going back to yesterday’s thread, the final comment from Paul was:

“I still don’t think this team sucks, per se, even though their recent play certainly does. There just seems to be something *wrong* with the team, as a whole. Weird vibes, voodoo doll pins, some strange interactions in the clubhouse…. Nearly impossible to explain the Jekyll/Hyde performance up til now. You don’t just suddenly forget how to play the game, or how to win.”

I agree with this 100% and have said as much. I think this team has the pieces to win it all. They just need to find a way out of this funk.

If there is a night on which to begin a big turn-around…tonight is THE NIGHT – Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead Tribute Night.

Far be it from me to say something positive about the Dodgers, but I’ll give them credit for this, all the time they were sort of treading water this season, they never stopped making changes. They even sent Enrique Hernandez down to the minors for a while, who was their super-sub last season. There’s no way the Dodgers this season would have stuck with the ’16 Blanco. They’ve, of course, sent Puig down to the minors. They ate a huge amount of cash and cut Crawford. If somebody from AAA was doing well, they stuck with them, and rode them until it burned out. Trayce Thompson made a huge contribution before being injured. The Giants burying Parker back in AAA just isn’t a first-rate decision by the Giants. And Tomlinson in AAA instead of OOO being there isn’t putting the best foot forward either. And there are other examples. The Dodgers, as an organization, are hungrier right now than the Giants. The Giants seem a little complacent because of all the championships.
Yeah, I know the Dodger starting pitching has huge issues, but they’ve never stopped tinkering with their pitching all season, especially the bullpen. I still don’t think they’re built well right now to win the World Series, but they did what they had to do to get the division lead. It’s going to be real hard to take that back from them. We’re probably staring at the reality of fighting for a Wild Card.
And as Jim Mora so famously said: “Playoffs?!! We’re just trying to win a game right now.”

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 18, 2016 at 9:33 am

And if Williamson is healthy again, then he’s another one that could be helping right now.
The Dodgers are just being more creative than the Giants. The Dodgers put Kendrick in leftfield, and he sucked for a while, but they stuck with him and he’s OK there now. The Giants need to be more creative with their outfield.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 18, 2016 at 9:36 am

How about bring up Tomlinson and Parker or Wiliamson, and actually bench Panik and Pence for a little while? Maybe even send Panik to AAA for a while to regain his game. I know it sounds way outside the box for the Giants, but that’s being bold and pro-active, IMO.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 18, 2016 at 10:01 am

Panik and Pence ARE a big problem right now. Neither has done much since coming back from their injuries. They SHOULD get rest. Williamson, Parker and Specs need to be here NOW, and not simply after the Sept call-up. O-O-O and Blanco are serious liabilities right now.

Bochy has followed this pattern all through his tenure here. And while it has worked out eventually in some cases, there are cases (Ray Ray, Rowand, Cain, Peavy, Bad Penny) where this utterly failed.

  10. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 18, 2016 at 10:23 am

the Dodgers have been on an offensive tear that has made up for their crummy pitching. Giants also clearly won off season from them, and I’d say Moore and Nunez are better than Reddick and Hill, who I don’t believe has even pitched yet. Giants offensive woes contributed to many of recent losses while LA has blasted through sub par pitching.

They are a team more built for power and those teams are generally easier to pitch to. Just as I don’t believe SF will continue to slide further, I doubt LA maintains their offensive surge. SPs and defense should make the difference and I think Giants are stronger there. Hopefully this shows up in head to head match ups.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 18, 2016 at 11:49 am

Those are good points, Willie, I totally see what you’re saying; but I also think that kind of offense for the Dodgers just does well in the regular season because there is so much bad pitching out there. And as we get into September, and more teams start folding their tents up, those teams will be trotting out all kinds of AAA pitchers, and the Dodgers are just going to crush those guys; whereas, the Giants don’t have the sheer power to crush all that many pitchers. The Giants have to string together conga-line rallies.
It’s that same paradox of the last several years, which has served the Giants well, but makes for frustration during the regular season: the Dodgers are built better for the regular season, and the Giants are built better for the playoffs.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 18, 2016 at 12:03 pm

Giants of course didn’t help themselves by allowing the Padres to sweep them.
SF and LA will be playing Division opponents a lot, and all those games will factor in, maybe even more than the head to head. All those other teams would love to spoil someone’s playoff drive and have players trying to secure futures.

I like Bum batting too. But having a dude lingering at first base with 2 outs is just not a threat. It’s just a dude over there. At least at 2nd base and 2 out there is a threat.

  39. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 18, 2016 at 7:52 pm

I know he was out by 10 feet. If there is a bad throw (and you’re aware those happen right?) then it is a play that energizes the game, the team and the fanbase. It would have been a hustle play. I agree it was risky but it’s not like there were a bunch of guys in scoring position with our best hitter coming up. 2 outs, bottom of the order, fuck it, try to put yourself in scoring position. Again, no one else on this team is doing shit. I don’t like the move because he got thrown out, but I certainly don’t hate the attempt in that situation.

Agree, Craig, someone needs to do something aggressive. In 5th grade, playing kickball at recess, there was one classmate who would kick it, short or far, and he would just run run run, never stop, make the kids try to get him out, and more often than not, he’d make it all the way home, even on a grounder in the infield. Right, this is what it’s come to, me suggesting a playground kickball strategy for this team……

Watching MLB. 2 runners on. Great. Followed by 2 guys who don’t get the ball out of the infield. has to be affecting the pitchers. Fuck it is so aggravating

with all due respect to the outcome of this game…how bout these guys coming back in the bottom of the same inning they went down 4-0? That earns major respect from me.
