A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

LA(me) Game

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 24, 2016

When I put the call out for a suffocating pitching performance I was kinda hoping it would be better than just holding the Dodgers to single digits. Two guys named Segedin and Toles went blast off. That’s just so stupid.

The only good news is that the great TedSpe made a triumphant return to the Flap. Then he left to “go memorize lines.”

Someone should write a tragedy depicting this Giants season. It could be titled “For Whom the Bell Segedin and Toles”.

Cueto tonight vs The Blister.

To wait all day on anticipation of that…had a good gin/cigar buzz and then lights out asleep at 5-3 and happy once again to miss witnessing our horrid bullpen during this second half of the season..

As Mac reported, GH was right here was a missed sign on the double steal. Kelly did not get the sign to Bum for hit/run who took the pitch instead of swinging.

Middle order killed last night. Seager with clutch AB, fouling off tough pitches from Bum who then got wild with fastball way out of zone and walked him. As Pawlie said, events leading up to AGon single just out of Craw’s range, and the dribbler Nunez couldn’t handle off Turner’s bat, did them in.
From there it was Gearrin, Compost and Lopez making things worse.

Great to hear from Ted again, hopefully going forward under better circumstances.
Maeda probably best of SPs on this trip and Giants handled him pretty well.

Pagan continues to rake—wonder if any thought to moving Panik back up to top along with Span? These guys have all hit well lately.
Giants scored 5 last night and battled back—5 should be more than enough.

Yeah, a very disappointing outing by Bummie. It’s like he needs Puig out there to get pissed off at to keep him engaged.

Kelly with yet again a major gaffe. Fuck. Cueto had been giving up gopher balls as well, so hopefully he can calm the seas of mediocrity.

Geez if I knew they were gonna shit a rotten egg I would of got a better skink on last night!
Didn’t see the game probably a good thing now, but wtf is Kelly doing over at 3rd when he needs a translator to even have a sign from the dugout on key moments..

  7. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 24, 2016 at 8:36 am

How could that be on Kelly? Nunie and Panik both said they got the hit and run sign. So why didn’t Bum swing? Seems to me that’s on Bum

  8. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 24, 2016 at 8:49 am

At least Smith looked good out of pen and made AGon look pretty bad at the plate.
Those 2 likely to hook up again and he’s here to get tough LHs out.

Flav, I caught your comment about long distance KNBR signal. I shit you not, when I moved to DC from SF, was probably July 1, 1993. Giants were playing at home against the Fodgers. I pulled into Salt Lake City around 5 pm and drove around the town to check it out probably ate dinner.

I was weighing should I just crash at a motel there but figured might as well drive as much as possible and was hoping the Giants game would beam into Utah decently from KNBR. Game comes on and it is probably dusk east of Salt Lake City by the first pitch in SF and pretty decent signal. I drove for the entire game into Wyoming and that KNBR signal was strong the entire way…I was just completely blown away. Game ends and I end my roughly 14 hour day of driving in some podunk unknown middle of nowhere Wyoming town…

  10. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 24, 2016 at 8:57 am

Regarding the missed signal by Bum, agree with Flav no way that is on Roberto. Both runners got the signal, I think they are trying to save face for Bum. The runners I would presume don’t get the signal from the dugout but from Roberto…but it is clear there was a missed sign. Bochy would never have called for a double steal…

This is always a kind of lame excuse, but I’ll offer it anyway. It’s kind of along the lines of posts the other day that this team seems to be missing something. Maybe with all the earli injuries and Pen revolving door, the chemistry of this team is just messed up. Examples are bad base running all season, the missed signs stuff, atrocious hitting with RISP, etc. the overall play just seems out of whack…

I think our best hope is for Pence and/or Posey to get on a major tear and put the team on their back(s).

Tomorrow is the 45th anniversary of Dave Kingman hitting a school bus in the parking lot at Shea Stadium.
Feels like 145 years but a lot of people still remember it. It was a day game. I wore striped bell bottoms and a not so easy to get “Property Of San Francisco Giants” tee-shirt. Me and my friend had no problem getting grown-ups to buy us beers (50 cents?). We were already dreading the first day of school…

The first game I remember going to was Pads-Phils at the Vet in ’71 (and I have no idea why we went to this game). I noticed in the box they played the same night as your Kingman game, but the game I went to was the day before — 45 years ago today. Nate Colbert hit a Kingman-like bomb that might’ve been the longest HR in that first year at the Vet.

Bummie gets the h & r signal from Kelly. Somebody missed something somewhere. Fuck I don’t know. Just another case of sloppy shit I suppose. It looked like we were tightening up our sloppy play when we won a couple games, but we are being stupid again.

If the two runners got the signal from Kelly that means Bum missed the sign and Bochy is covering for Bum for some reason.

In addition to everything else going on, it has to rattle the teams’ confidence the way the bullpen gives up so much. Going back to that A’s series, when the Giants kept giving up big leads in that one game in particular. The team goes into battle, knowing in the back of their minds, that all their efforts can easily be in vain because of the bullpen. And there’s no fix available now. Watching Cleveland the other night, and Miller came in and struck out the side in the 9th in dominant fashion….we didn’t get a Miller, or Chapman, or Melancon, or whoever. Nobody of that caliber. Sure, teams weren’t particularly interested in our prospects, so that goes back to a few years recently of mediocre drafting. Things all fit together, and also can unravel together.
Huge games tonight and tomorrow night; get back in the division race, or we’ll be looking at battling for a Wild Card spot only.

Besides Cain and Peavy, I have been saying for the past month that it is obvious that Javier Lopez is completely done. Well, I am not throwing in the towel on winning the division, but something has to change. Principally:

Our core guys/heart of the line-up have to start hitting like heart of the line-up guys.

Bullpen must get its shit together.

We have eight games left with LA. Rest of this series, three more in Smell-A in late September and the final three games of the regular season are against them in our house.

The way things look now, equally important, if not MORE important than the games with the bambinos, is a four game set with the Redbirds in mid September.

We also have four against the Cubbies early September at Wrigley. We must win each and every series against the rest of the west…Dbacks, Friars and Rox.

37 games left. Time to put up or shut up. Which team will show up down the stretch?

I am off to camp near Lassen through Sunday, so no idea what type of service I will have (only device I am taking is my phone). If I cannot check-in, make it an awesome few days Flap Universe, and GO GIGANTES!

The only way to get Belt going is to disparage his putrid play. Belt has 3 bombs in August after posting just one in the month of July. That’s a massive fail, especially since his last one was at the Phone park on August 13th. You then have to go back to August 6th, in Washington for another bomb. Meh.

In DFS today, there are 13 1st baseman above him, i.e., he’s in the bargain bin (if you want to call it that) of the “Dollar Store.” Right above him is Kennys fucking Vargas and below him is C.J. Cron (who?).

OK, now watch Belt rake tonight. Right, Chi?

yes, he’s $2200. DK is miles ahead of fanduel in terms of listing available players. It sometimes takes FD 3 or 4 days to get a guy who’s been playing 3 or 4 days into their system. Lame.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 24, 2016 at 4:18 pm

something important to note (at least I think it’s important): they don’t really have anyone on the team who tries to hit home runs. The Orioles have an entire LU that seems to swing from their heels on every pitch. But guys like Posey are happy just driving the ball to right center. Pagan and Span are just trying to hit line drives. Crawford and Panik don’t swing for the fences. So my point is that if you aren’t trying to hit them you aren’t going to hit as many as the guys who are constantly trying to hit them.
None of this means I don’t wish they’d hit more bombs. 🙂

There seem to be a lot of factors for why the team a) was in 1st place with best record in baseball at the break and b) has completely cratered since that time, but mainly I agree with Loo’s post this morning that Pence and Posey are keys for getting hot in the middle of the lineup and carrying the team, which they’ve each done in the past and sorely need to do now. IMO it’s on Pence. Without him performing in the middle of the lineup, which he was doing before his injury, there’s just *nothing* there. It’s like the lineup turns over after a few batters and then there’s still nothing there. It’s almost like having 2 mediocre half lineups. Need that “power glue” to hold the whole lineup together. I really thought Pence would’ve turned it on by now. I’m kinda wondering about “best years” being behind him already, or maybe still hurt, or maybe just…. nearing the end. Pence drives the bus when he’s on. No Pence, that bus ain’t going anywhere.

Snarkk, I figured 2 Flappers would remember Tom Holmoe – you and Flavor. He was the gift who kept on giving too, because shortly after he resigned, the Bears were found guilty of major NCAA violations when a professor retroactively added two football players to a class he had taught the previous spring in order to keep them eligible. Athletic department officials knew that the players were ineligible, but did not disclose it to anyone. As a result, the NCAA slapped Cal with five years’ probation, stripped the Bears of their four victories from the 1999 season, banned them from postseason play in 2002 and took away nine scholarships over four years. When Jeff Tedford led the Bears to a 7-5 record in 2002, they were not allowed to play in a bowl game.

Yeah, I suspected you would remember this. Ironically, he has probably been the best athletic director in the history of Brigham Young university.

I just thought it was apropos that Holmoe went to the Niners. He had a few good years.

At some point Bochy has to think, hmm, how do I get guys into scoring position?

  49. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 24, 2016 at 9:07 pm

Hmmm. He called that pitch 2 pitches ago, 000. Think he’ll call it again?

Nice walk. Belt deciding to leave it up to Agent 000 is another example of him not understanding shit but a strike zone. I’m not against walks but I am against Belt obsessively looking for them and he has to understand where he is in the batting order right now…

He swung at the two pitches he could do anything with! If he had lined a single on the 3-1 97 mph off the outside corner fastball he missed, would the Giants have been better off?

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 24, 2016 at 9:17 pm

i’m steaming about him for his post all star break production. It sucks.

Holmoe was totally Opie from Mayberry.Like I said did not no how to swing a bat, average white boy speed for a DB,but made a few plays took keep his job. Stunk at Cal. They gave him way to long a leash there. The last year what 1 win are 2??

Atleast if Pagan was running on the play we could have had some excitement when Kelly sends him home and gets nailed..,

  66. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 24, 2016 at 9:47 pm

Crawford just missed that one for a 3 run dinger. Giants need to pull a run out of their ass in the 9th….
