Signs . . .
I’m not one for omens signs or superstitions. Well, not lately anyway. Not with the weird and awful year it has been for Bay Area sports teams, and sports and rock & roll icons in general.
Anyhow, I found this moth on my doorstep yesterday night. An omen of good things? 6 games, 6 days, 3 teams, 2 spots.
I’m of a mind that we just need to get in. Even losing the one-game play-in means we made it to the playoffs. I’d rather lose the play-in game that be labeled the biggest fail in baseball history. At least since the playoff format started.

Was it alive?
Yes! If it was dead, I’d take that as a bad sign . . .
i won’t consider us the biggest fail in mlb history. Not by a long shot. Look, we don’t have a very good team. We played ok for a while, hell the Phillies had a decent run this year too. I consider the Warriors not closing out the NBA championship last year to be an epic fail. In baseball terms, the Seattle Mariners won 116 games in 2001 and didn’t make the World Series. THAT was an epic fail.
You can toss in the Patriots as well.
Perfect season, lose the SB!
Sure made a lot of x Dolphins happy from their 72 team..
Beautiful moth, and decked out in Giants colors. Very cool!
I beg to differ. With the caveat of the divisional playoff format. That’s what the outside world will be saying, anyway. And this isn’t taking away from the Dubs fuckup. Having the best record in baseball at the break is a little more than ‘playing OK’. Not making the playoffs when leading the league at the break, especially with the 5-team format now in place, is epic.
There’s no way around prettying up 25-41.
.500 ball would put us at 88-68. 2 games out of 1st and safely in the WC.
Not to be overly morbid, but last night I read an article about the Cleveland Indians boat tragedy, and there was lots I didn’t know about it.
– Neither person killed was decapitated. That became an urban legend. In fact, one of the guys died the next morning in the hospital.
– Hargrove, the manager, gave his team the day off that day in Spring Training, after refusing an offer by the Dodgers to fit in an extra game that day. For years, Hargrove was racked by guilt over that decision.
– One of the widows, remarried, still lives on the property, and the pier is still there, although it’s on dry land now, due to the lake being affected by real estate development in the area. (Why not get the pier torn down? Too expensive to do that? How can she stand to see it?)
– Ojeda, the survivor, does some broadcasting with the Mets these days.
I checked with Mets fans at work, Ojeda used to be on the pre- and post-game shows on the Mets’ SNY network, but he’s no longer on there and hasn’t been for at least the last couple years.
Yeah, that makes sense; the article I read was a few years old.
Hoping a couple more epic fails are revisited:
One, Dodgers win division/choke playoffs. How can you explain Opie, consistently best SP in reg season getting his ass kicked post season?
Two, Cubs. Epic chokers going back over 100 yrs. Love to see Maddon with egg on face after all they’ve done/money spent acquiring talent. Too bad Mitch Williams can’t broadcast it.
At least one of those scenarios is going to happen. 🙂
I was surprised when I read that the Dodgers had won the division the last four years. That doesn’t seem possible. I guess when you win 3 of the last 5 World Series, the title of division champion just doesn’t have the same luster. The early exits don’t help either.
we have a bunch of guys having underwhelming years. They should have been better than this. But I don’t think playing well for half a season gives you a free pass or an expectation to being in the post season. The two teams I listed (GS last year, Seattle in ’01) were dominant all year long and if the regular season means anything they should have won their respective championships.
The 2016 Giants? We have been the worst team in the league for half a season. That’s no accident. That’s who we are.
Agreed. Just getting to the one game wild card would soften the 2nd half meltdown… just a little.
But my God…The Cards and to some extent the Mets are just handing that post season game to the Giants on a silver platter. There’s just no sustained momentum….
Well, 6 games at home will hopefully get us over the minuscule speed bump. The Giants are equal to the Mets in losses so they have a game in hand vs them. Not sure of that’s a good thing or not. The Dogs are fighting for home field with the Nats and are a game behind them. We’ll see where things are by the time we get the Dogs here.
Mets are on the road for their remaining 5 games vs the Marlins and Phillies.
Cards are at home vs the Reds and the Pirates.
Mets have the tougher row to how I’d think playing in the eye of the emotional hurricane that is Miami right now.
After watching the debate, the presidential race is kind of like this wild-card chase: No one deserves to win it.
In the wake of the Dodgers thriving while Kershaw was out, should the notion of a starting pitcher being named MVP be reconsidered?
I’m still kind of shaking my head a little at the Giants’ last game. The playoffs are on the line, the whole season is on the line, and both Kontos and Guerrin couldn’t get through their respective innings on Sunday without giving up a run each.
Giants have apparently traded for Gordon Beckham from the Braves…he will not be playoff eligible, if they punch their ticket. Head-scratcher extraordinaire….

Nunez, we hardly knew ye.
How bad off is Nunie?
What a blow to Washington losing Ramos…
Haven’t heard anything about Nunez. Hope he makes it back before the week is over. I’m doubtful, though.
From SI. com:
Jose Fernandez asked multiple Marlins players if they wanted to join him on his boat the night he died, Yahoo’s Jeff Passan reports.
“After Saturday’s game, Fernandez had asked a number of teammates to join him on the boat,” Passan reports. “One by one, they declined.”
One of the players was outfielder Marcel Ozuna, who told the Miami Herald after Monday’s game that he cautioned Fernandez against heading out on the boat.
“That night I told him, ‘Don’t go out,’” Ozuna said. “Everybody knew he was crazy about that boat and loved being out on the water. I told him I couldn’t go out that night because I had the kids and my wife waiting for me.”
Sliding doors stuff. Somebody at the Cleveland Indian boat tragedy lost a game of rock/paper/scissors to determine who rode first on the boat, and that was the tragic ride.
I think it was Waylon Jennings who “lost” a coin toss and wasn’t on the plane with Buddy Holly when it crashed.
In Sparky Lyle’s book (The Bronx Zoo) he tells of a harrowing experience a few teammates had flying with an inexperienced Munson…
What’s this shit about acquiring Gordon Beckham for the last 6 games?
And he can’t be on the playoff roster if we somehow pull that out of ass!
Ok I priced a potential FREE STIX shirt with a FLAP NATION on the back for about $12 a shirt if we ordered 30. I’ve tried to copy and paste the design but these Internets wont let me. $10 a shirt if we ordered 40…may not make sense for me to order being on the right (wrong) coast…
I hope it has his mugshot on the front.
I did not go that far…thought that would hurt sales…
Baggs tweet says Nunez out two to three days. Also Mac put on 60-day DL, and “Cueto slotted for Thursday, Bochy said.”
Glad to hear Mac will be ready for Thanksgiving…
Does that put Moore starting on Sunday? Makes me a little nervous…
Let’s just hope they’re still alive Sunday.
Williamson…..some guys are just injury-magnets for some reason.
Maybe the Giants second half isn’t an EPIC fail, but it’s a damn big one.
I believe they still have a worse second half record at the same point in the season as the 1985 Giants, the most gawdawful POS SF Giants team in history. That ’85 team had dogmeat talent, and a dogmeat attitude to boot. To be WORSE than that EPIC POS team in the second half, is pretty damn bad…
Who the frack is Gordon Beckham — a POS infielder from the Braves? A soccer player? A celebrity Food Network chef from London?
This “trade” seems absolutely nonsensical. For what? Tomlinson, 000 and Gillaspie are around. 6 games he’ll be available, that’s it.
And Reynolds DFA’d. Nice that Boch brought such a talent into Diego game last Sun so he could piss a one run game away as a resume-builder to getting cut…
Way to go the other way. Better late than never.
Belt should have tagged
Belt goes Oppo! Hey, he can get doubles that way. Who’da thunk that?…
All I ask is for 5-6 runs tonight and at least a 3 run lead in the 9th…
F/G had interesting column on Opie and Cy Young award this year, asking how relevant it is that he has missed so much time and only thrown 142 innings so far.
His ERA is 1.65. He’s struck out 168 and walked 10, with league leading 3 shutouts and WHIP of 0.71
So the argument is, even if he pitched at replacement level for another 60 innings to equal guys like Scherzer and Bum he’d still have better numbers.
Anybody having trouble getting into this game?
What game? 🙂
Couple nice runs scored and good pitching from Moore so far.
This guy was a good pick up.
Yeah, agree, Willie. He might not have helped much for the post-season this year (still to be determined) but he’ll be an important part of the rotation next year…
Who the hell was Damon Berryhill???? I have absolutely no memory of him. They showed him catching Beck’s division winning pitch in 1997…
I knew there was something about Bob Kauffman that pic has been bugging me all day…he played college ball at same school as famous Warrior who began his career in Philly.
Any guesses?
The Big Dipper?
Nah mid-70s 80s guy.
The Stilt..
The dreaded lead off double…
3 rockets in a row from top of the order.
STPOT!
Dang make it 4.
Beckham’s a real sparkplug!
German getting bombed!
Well we got to 5…
WTF is going on here? A big inning?
For the Giants?…
Team cycle
I thought it was illegal to score more than 2 runs in an inning…
Just isn’t gentlemanly…
Beckham is an upgrade over 000
Who wouldn’t be?
So is Posh Spice…
Answer is Lloyd World B Free, from tiny Guilford College in NC.
Averaged 30 one year for Clips. I saw that team play couple times (once in SD Sports Arena where they card everyone in beer line), him and Freeman Williams and Brien Taylor in 3 guard LU bombing away.
Belt has a cycle working. Needs the dinger…
I know it’s 7-1 but striking out Arenado with 2 guys on coming out of the pen is damn impressive for Nathan.
Lemahieu is the best kept secret in baseball – helluva an all-around player…
Agreed.
Sherps have some good players tho it’s hard to tell because offensive stats are inflated due to where they play and everyone disses them.
Sure would be interesting to see how good they could be if they were at sea level all year.
’80-’81 was a fun time to be a Warrior fan. They may have been defensively challenged, and they didn’t reach the playoffs, but they scored a lot with World B Free, Bernard King, Purvis Short, and even Joe Barely Cares.
Bernard King could beat you with the post up jumper or a tire iron.
Take your pick…
Crawford should dislocate all his fingers…
Tonight’s game is kind of weird. Can it mean something? Does this team have it in them to have a good week?
Yowza. Save some for tomorrow.
Wow. All the teams in the WC race wake up and crush it.
Larry Smith was one of all time Warrior stud..
Dude laid it all out every game.Loved his section of crazy ass fans up in the nosebleed section with their yellow hard hats on doing a crazy ass dance, great stuff, very entertaining..
Yup! Loved that guy. The only defender on the team.
yeah big time fav. First time (and only time) down the floor they would run a cross screen post up for him. He’d often miss and then you’d hear PA guy Callahan say, “Loose ball foul on the Warriors #13…”
Pride of Alcorn State, same school produced Steve Air McNair.
The stupidest thing: the Wild Card playoff is one game, even though the NL Wild Card game is on a Wednesday.
Even allowing for a Monday tie-breaker game, it still is ridiculous.
That Monday tie-breaker day is rarely needed.
Here we come!

Love it!
Belt batting second, igniting rallies. Stix asked for that all season.
Go,rally moth! Giants Mets and Cards all score 12 runs.
Giants bullpen had to give up two runs, of course.
The Rally Moth I love..The Rally Stix also good…
And now we’re going for the”Beckham Effect”
5 games of watching Dan Uggla play the most horrific week of baseball ever.Errors, you bet, hitting you bet “NOT”! Can Gordon repeat those failures in 5 games?? Inquiring minds need to know!!!
I think 4-2 in last 6 gets us in. 1 down 3 to go!!!
Nothing I’ve enjoyed more on the blog is seeing Clint’s knowing head nod!!!
