A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Time For 2002 R(even)ge?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 11, 2016

Ashamed to admit I didn’t make it to the end of that game, not by a long shot. I did what I normally do when I don’t see the end, I opened up my lap top and went to the Flap.

590 comments. Either something really good or something really bad happened.

Or both….

I read through the highs and lows, then went to mlb.com to see it for myself. I don’t really think you can understate this Gillaspie thing. For starters, I can now spell his last name without having to look it up. That in itself is a miracle. Driving down the hill to Safeway this morning I was listening to the KNBR guys jizzing the radio waves and heard that lefties are hitting .122 off Chapman in his career. He had never given up a triple before last night. And had that been a park normally configured his no-triples record would still be in tact (cue: Diggity’s grass roots effort to get the park changed).

I’m just glad we got at least one. I watched the Red Sox game and as it wound down you could just see how desperate and disappointed all those players were. Swept out of the post season at home. Screw that.

I’d like to lather up the hate for Lackey tonight but I just don’t have it in me. That 2002 game wasn’t won by him it was lost by Dusty for starting Livan. And do you remember who are two pinch hitters were that game?

Shingo and Tom Goodwin. We never stood a chance in Game 7.

Instead of talking about tonight’s game I want to bring back and old quote from the past. It was 2012 and the Giants were down 2-0 to the Reds. Hunter Pence gathered the team around him. Retold by Tim Flannery, I’ll let The Reverend take it from here…..

“GET IN HERE, EVERYONE GET IN HERE..LOOK INTO EACH OTHER EYES..NOW! LOOK INTO EACH OTHERS EYES, I WANT ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU, IT’S THE MOST FUN, THE BEST TEAM I HAVE EVER BEEN ON SAID THE REVEREND HUNTER PENCE. ” AND NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS WE MUST NOT GIVE IN, WE OWE IT TO EACH OTHER, PLAY FOR EACH OTHER, I NEED ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU GUYS, I NEED TO SEE WHAT THERIOT (JERRY) WILL WEAR TOMORROW, I WANT TO PLAY DEFENSE BEHIND VOGELSONG BECAUSE HE’S NEVER BEEN TO THE PLAYOFFS..PLAY FOR EACH OTHER NOT YOURSELF, WIN EACH MOMENT, WIN EACH INNING, IT’S ALL WE HAVE LEFT”

Now go out there and do what you do with your Even Year Bullshit……

While I happily drifted off in Game 2, 5-2 seemed insurmountable. No way was I going to miss the entirety last night even it meant watching us lose.

Flav said it after I was bemoaning in the bottom of the thrid that 3-0 seemed insurmountable, that it was only three runs. And then once more something completely unexpected happened with Gillaspie driving a second pitch into the gap to drive in two. I will literally never forget the moment. My 17 year old staying up with me until 2:45 was also going to be a lifetime memory. Of course he made it to school, I couldnt get to sleep until about 4:30 am.

But then something completely expected happened and Romo throws a pitch that should not have been anywhere near where it was thrown, but all just leads to Giants lore where one day hopefully I can tell my grandchildren how their dad and I stayed up until 2:45 in the morning watching truly the most memorable comeback in SF Giants history…

Hey, I know a lot of folks here want to see us trade Panik, but I still like the guy, a lot. Sure, he is having an off year, but I think he will settle into being a damned good player. I am still in the “keep Joe” camp.

    Never easy.

    Often Tortuous.

I did not make it to the end, either. I pulled my tired ass outta bed this morn at 4:45, let a couple of the dogs out, and grabbed my phone to check the score.

    And I fucking cried…

And then I read this marvelous thread…weaved the way only Flavor can weave ’em…

    And I cried again…

    If not Romo, who?

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on October 11, 2016 at 6:54 am

I know who is never going to get the ball…last name rhymes with asilla…Romo has been there and done that. Keep him there. Blade: Question for you (And Paul too). You said you got an apartment in Vietnam. Are there rules on how long you can stay there? Or is it just, “it’s Vietnam, I get to do what I like.” What does your visa allow? How do you go about extending your stay?

Craig, most of this is very, very new to me (i.e., I have never really wanted a relationship . . . Or, as I use to say, “I am relationship proof,” which may prove ultimately true. Dunno).

Linh and I had to sign a 6 month lease with a deposit equal to 2 months rent. Usually, landlords only want a deposit equal to one month rent. However, please speak up Paul if that isn’t accurate. Anywho, without Linh or another Vietnamese person helping you out, you usually get hosed if you’re a foreigner. Exception being people like Paul, who has been around the block far longer than most foreigners and certainly, myself. I am paying $490 a month for a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment (new) in a very quiet “hem” (which is quite desirable. Again, pipe in Paul on what a hem is). Conversely, a hotel (3 star) would cost me $1200 a month. So, this is much, much better, insofar as saving money. Of course, I am now paying for the apartment here, electricity, and a housekeeper. Couple that with my condo mortgage payment in Colorado ($1100) and other bills there, I’m basically maintaining two households, albeit, the one in Vietnam is much less expensive.

Regarding my Visa . . . Right now, I have a 3 month, multi entry, tourist visa, which allows me to exit and enter the country 3 times during my 3 months here, e.g., Linh and I are planning on a trip to Myammar (Burma) next month and maybe another trip. Dunno right now. So, in answer to your question – I am clueless about other types of visa, e.g., fiance or marriage visa, because I have not checked into it yet. However, I can theoretically, keep renewing my existing visa by exiting the country at 2 months and 20 days (or a day before expiration) and stay in let’s say Cambodia for a half hour and than reenter Vietnam, with the proper Visa Approval Letter (obtained online) and start the 3 month, multi-entry Visa process over again.

Bottom line? As I alluded to Peter last night and have indicated to Paul in numerous conversations, I’m defintiely considering residing in Vietnam 9 months out of the year. I feel most alive when I am traveling and equally important, we are going to have a real estate bubble in Colorado next year, i.e., a great time to take a big profit on my condo which I bought at the depths of the great recession.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 11, 2016 at 8:45 am

thanks. I had been wondering about it. How does Paul stay there for so long? Same way? Entering Cambodia for a half hour and then coming back? If either of you could answer down below instead of here I’d appreciate it.

Thought of it while watching posts go by from east coast at 2 and 3 AM, plus Paul James Blade from around the world.

Amazing ABs by Giants LH hitters, esp off Chapman and then later to end it all and send crowd home with happy ending. And the $20 mil man is worth every f-ing cent.

Backs to the wall in an another elimination game with 100 mph flame thrower Chapman on the mound in the 8th and the next thing you see his head bowed down in a blown game…. Conor did it again.
In the end, last night at 2:45am that epic game ended in the 13th inning becoming the 10th consecutive post season elimination game the Giants have won since 2012.

I wake up this morning, check the scores online and “Boom!” a miracle of miracles. I watched the eighth before I went to work just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming and there it was.

I went to bed not long after the Giants pulled ahead. Sounds like a wild ride from there. I’m still recovering from spending the weekend in LA trying to keep up with my son and his friend and had to get some sleep.
Flav (and others) I think are WAY too hard on Dusty. He’s a very good manager in my opinion and I don’t think he has some “X” factor that prevents him from winning in the playoffs. Hell, several of you had him and the Nats buried already and look what they are doing. I was at Game 7 in 2002 and I thought it was a tough call whether to start Reuter or Livan in that game. Yes, in retrospect it stings that Livan was off and Reuter came in and threw (I think) hitless ball while he was in there.
For me, I always will have bad feelings for Lackey for shutting us down that night. Its cool that he is still around and we get another chance to get over on him.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 11, 2016 at 7:53 am

Dusty made a bad decision yesterday to leave Gonzo in vs Ruiz. It was obvious to anyone who was watching the game that Gonzo was done. What happened? Boom, 2 run bomb. Then he pulls him. They won the game but I am a firm believer in Dusty Baker being a BAD IN GAME DECISION MAKER. He’s great at connecting with the players and shit and that goes a long way. But as a decision maker, I am not a fan.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on October 11, 2016 at 7:58 am

I was thinking just yesterday that it wouldn’t kill me if the Nats made it to the WS, assuming, of course, that the G’s didn’t, because Dusty is their manager. Let’s not forget that he oversaw the turnaround of an entire franchise, along with Peter Magowan and Barry Bonds. A team that was this close to being the Tampa-St. Pete Whatevers ended up moving into a shiny new ballpark in China Basin.

So, Dawg, I’m with you. He didn’t leave under the best of circumstances after a brutally difficult WS loss, but he led some great Giants teams up until then (including the 2002 team). He’s paid his dues. I wouldn’t mind seeing him get one.

As for Lackey, I’d like to see him get his ass kicked tonight.

While Romo took the blown save, rest of pen was great, 8 shutout innings and Blach mowed them down.
Cubs, not so much. Only tremendous grab off Posey shot to deep RF saved them from losing it earlier.

While I don’t like him, Maddon made a hella move to bring in Chapman and I back him to the hilt. Look what happened to by the book Showalter who left Britton warming up 3 times and never brought him in. High leverage situation with tying run in scoring position and LHs due up, chance for your team to advance…hell yeah you bring in your best arm.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on October 11, 2016 at 8:15 am

Law was pumped and dealing last night. It seems to me that he’d make a good closer at some point. Blach is intriguing. He’s been lights out since his call up, including, what, 3 innings in the post season? I don’t know what he has, but I think they call it balls.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 11, 2016 at 8:18 am

I’m not down with it at all. Champman hadn’t done a 6 out save in 3 years. He always comes in clean for the 9th, and the situation was much different. 2 on, 0 out, and up by a run in the 8th. I get using your guy, but it put Chapman in a difficult situation. One he isn’t used to.

Balt didn’t have the lead. Granted, I would have brought Britton at some point during the tie, especially in extras, but I think a lot of managers would have played for the lead as well. Especially on the road.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 11, 2016 at 8:10 am

I didn’t think it was a tough call at the time for game 7 because Livan was soooo blase about everything. He drove me nuts. As far as game 6 goes, well, that was Dusty’s combo down the stretch. It cratered the last time . . .

I’m still pissed but I wonder how any other manager would have done it. Most would go the route Dusty did, but Boch? Who knows? Would he sense the moment was too much for F Rod? And it was Scott fucking Speizio. A guy whose name is up there with Jose fucking Okendo.

Craig, people who are from the USA, but are expats living in another country, frequently just cross the border for a half hour, hour, day, week, or longer . . . and then re-enter. Quite common in all countries that have simple passport/visa requirements. For example, I have many friends who live in Costa Rica, Panama, Urugruay and Ecuador, who do this. They might want to incorporate a vacation or only stay the amount of time to cross the border and complete the paperwork to get back into the country they are living in. The rule of thumb, insofar as Visa maximum stay seems to be 90 days. Again, not all, but many, many countries have this max. for a tourist visa.

Shit, you can get off the plane in Ecuador and you are immediately covered for health insurance just like the locals. In Panama, if you can show evidence of a pension or a certain amount of savings (I think it is $50,000.00), then you are eligible for retirement discounts, e.g., 50% off airline tickets, movie tickets, health care coverage (I think), etc., etc.

I think Paul usually goes to Bangkok to . . . uhh, have fun and then renews his Visa while there. Again, not certain, so pipe in Paul.

Duration changes from time to time, my current one is for 2 years, loved it when it was 3. Then you gotta do it all over again (medical checkup, police check, documents, obviously money, etc.). I do know some foreigners who do the visit-Cambodia-for-2-hours thing, but it seems a bit of a pain, glad I can have the resident card. My understanding is that you can replace an injured player (pagan) but that the injured player must then sit out the next series if U advance. If Pagan is useless die to back, why not replace with Parker or somebody that ca n actually play Now? …

  33. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 11, 2016 at 3:20 pm

The Flap was a bit overly rough on Vasgersian last night, IMO. I like the guy. He does a nice job in studio shows for MLB Network, combining humor and honest appraisal of things. Admittedly, play-by-play is not his biggest strength; and sure, he, like a lot of the baseball media, is caught up in the Cubs’ quest to break the “curse.” It’s the biggest media narrative of this baseball season. That’s just my opinion on all that. 🙂

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on October 11, 2016 at 3:28 pm

I really enjoy him on the morning MLB show that he does as well, though Chris Rose and Kevin Millar are my favorites but I am rarely able to catch their show.

But yeah, he needs to stick to his day job and out of the broadcast booth.

Harold Reynolds is hilarious. He says the same shit over and over and over. The other night he wouldn’t shut up about the bad lead the runner at first got. Today he must have said 25 times that Kershaw has “given them everything they could ask for.” It’s insane, it’s like he’s got alzheimer’s or something. How can you repeat the same thing this many times?
