Time For 2002 R(even)ge?
Ashamed to admit I didn’t make it to the end of that game, not by a long shot. I did what I normally do when I don’t see the end, I opened up my lap top and went to the Flap.
590 comments. Either something really good or something really bad happened.
Or both….
I read through the highs and lows, then went to mlb.com to see it for myself. I don’t really think you can understate this Gillaspie thing. For starters, I can now spell his last name without having to look it up. That in itself is a miracle. Driving down the hill to Safeway this morning I was listening to the KNBR guys jizzing the radio waves and heard that lefties are hitting .122 off Chapman in his career. He had never given up a triple before last night. And had that been a park normally configured his no-triples record would still be in tact (cue: Diggity’s grass roots effort to get the park changed).
I’m just glad we got at least one. I watched the Red Sox game and as it wound down you could just see how desperate and disappointed all those players were. Swept out of the post season at home. Screw that.
I’d like to lather up the hate for Lackey tonight but I just don’t have it in me. That 2002 game wasn’t won by him it was lost by Dusty for starting Livan. And do you remember who are two pinch hitters were that game?
Shingo and Tom Goodwin. We never stood a chance in Game 7.
Instead of talking about tonight’s game I want to bring back and old quote from the past. It was 2012 and the Giants were down 2-0 to the Reds. Hunter Pence gathered the team around him. Retold by Tim Flannery, I’ll let The Reverend take it from here…..
“GET IN HERE, EVERYONE GET IN HERE..LOOK INTO EACH OTHER EYES..NOW! LOOK INTO EACH OTHERS EYES, I WANT ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU, IT’S THE MOST FUN, THE BEST TEAM I HAVE EVER BEEN ON SAID THE REVEREND HUNTER PENCE. ” AND NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS WE MUST NOT GIVE IN, WE OWE IT TO EACH OTHER, PLAY FOR EACH OTHER, I NEED ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU GUYS, I NEED TO SEE WHAT THERIOT (JERRY) WILL WEAR TOMORROW, I WANT TO PLAY DEFENSE BEHIND VOGELSONG BECAUSE HE’S NEVER BEEN TO THE PLAYOFFS..PLAY FOR EACH OTHER NOT YOURSELF, WIN EACH MOMENT, WIN EACH INNING, IT’S ALL WE HAVE LEFT”
Now go out there and do what you do with your Even Year Bullshit……
While I happily drifted off in Game 2, 5-2 seemed insurmountable. No way was I going to miss the entirety last night even it meant watching us lose.
Flav said it after I was bemoaning in the bottom of the thrid that 3-0 seemed insurmountable, that it was only three runs. And then once more something completely unexpected happened with Gillaspie driving a second pitch into the gap to drive in two. I will literally never forget the moment. My 17 year old staying up with me until 2:45 was also going to be a lifetime memory. Of course he made it to school, I couldnt get to sleep until about 4:30 am.
But then something completely expected happened and Romo throws a pitch that should not have been anywhere near where it was thrown, but all just leads to Giants lore where one day hopefully I can tell my grandchildren how their dad and I stayed up until 2:45 in the morning watching truly the most memorable comeback in SF Giants history…
Get to Lackey early and the Cubs will quit on themselves tonight…
Badass that you and your son stayed-up to catch the whole thing, G.
And he wore his Panik jersey the whole game and to school today..how timely is that???
Hey, I know a lot of folks here want to see us trade Panik, but I still like the guy, a lot. Sure, he is having an off year, but I think he will settle into being a damned good player. I am still in the “keep Joe” camp.
Never easy.
Often Tortuous.
I did not make it to the end, either. I pulled my tired ass outta bed this morn at 4:45, let a couple of the dogs out, and grabbed my phone to check the score.
And I fucking cried…
And then I read this marvelous thread…weaved the way only Flavor can weave ’em…
And I cried again…
Still BeliEVEN…
Just Win…
I thought you went silent last night Chia…
I did…it is right there above in black and white, brother “I did not make it to the end, either.” (I watched every pitch until the 11th). I just could not take it any more, and went the same route as Wilco…
Was just referring not being able to get your timely spins…
The commentary was fast and furious last night and not sure who was commenting when on top of it…did we even lose Draculoo late???
Draculoo got a CG.
Check the tower logs for Christ sake!
Oh, I was spinning alright! The Flap was on my mind during the game.
Sometimes during these intense games, I just need to focus, and can’t comment. When we finally went up, I just could not stand it any longer…
So, if there is a close situation tonight, who gets the ball? I say Romo still has to be the guy…
If not Romo, who?
I know who is never going to get the ball…last name rhymes with asilla…Romo has been there and done that. Keep him there. Law just has never had that big moment but I was so fired up last night with him. Strickland looked like a differenct pitcher but I still dont trust him with a lead or tie game.
And of course after Flav kept hope alive…he then went to bed…but the rest of us wotjput any damn naps carried the torch. After the Bryant homer, I said we would win because we actually had the bullpen advantage…just took 4 innings to get there…
dude I had to go to bed. I get up at 4:30am every day and, most importantly, get through the day sans naps! 🙂 🙂 🙂
I have to drive kids around to some appts this afternoon, but think we are skipping one soccer practice. So nap time to get through Game 4 is a priority! At least 8:30 start is a god send. I am still a little shocked that I am awake now and still pumped after about 3.5 hours of sleep…
You and me, Flav…4:45 for me. I wanted to hang, but between being dog-ass tired, and my stomach in knots…I had to bail. Was not an easy decision, nor one I took lightly, and felt bad about it, but…
Blade: Question for you (And Paul too). You said you got an apartment in Vietnam. Are there rules on how long you can stay there? Or is it just, “it’s Vietnam, I get to do what I like.” What does your visa allow? How do you go about extending your stay?
Have a good day Flappers and catch you all tonight…
Craig, most of this is very, very new to me (i.e., I have never really wanted a relationship . . . Or, as I use to say, “I am relationship proof,” which may prove ultimately true. Dunno).
Linh and I had to sign a 6 month lease with a deposit equal to 2 months rent. Usually, landlords only want a deposit equal to one month rent. However, please speak up Paul if that isn’t accurate. Anywho, without Linh or another Vietnamese person helping you out, you usually get hosed if you’re a foreigner. Exception being people like Paul, who has been around the block far longer than most foreigners and certainly, myself. I am paying $490 a month for a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment (new) in a very quiet “hem” (which is quite desirable. Again, pipe in Paul on what a hem is). Conversely, a hotel (3 star) would cost me $1200 a month. So, this is much, much better, insofar as saving money. Of course, I am now paying for the apartment here, electricity, and a housekeeper. Couple that with my condo mortgage payment in Colorado ($1100) and other bills there, I’m basically maintaining two households, albeit, the one in Vietnam is much less expensive.
Regarding my Visa . . . Right now, I have a 3 month, multi entry, tourist visa, which allows me to exit and enter the country 3 times during my 3 months here, e.g., Linh and I are planning on a trip to Myammar (Burma) next month and maybe another trip. Dunno right now. So, in answer to your question – I am clueless about other types of visa, e.g., fiance or marriage visa, because I have not checked into it yet. However, I can theoretically, keep renewing my existing visa by exiting the country at 2 months and 20 days (or a day before expiration) and stay in let’s say Cambodia for a half hour and than reenter Vietnam, with the proper Visa Approval Letter (obtained online) and start the 3 month, multi-entry Visa process over again.
Bottom line? As I alluded to Peter last night and have indicated to Paul in numerous conversations, I’m defintiely considering residing in Vietnam 9 months out of the year. I feel most alive when I am traveling and equally important, we are going to have a real estate bubble in Colorado next year, i.e., a great time to take a big profit on my condo which I bought at the depths of the great recession.
thanks. I had been wondering about it. How does Paul stay there for so long? Same way? Entering Cambodia for a half hour and then coming back? If either of you could answer down below instead of here I’d appreciate it.
So, would this be listed in the “Thanks Dad” category or just the “Dad?” category?
“He was my short, fat kid. He played baseball mostly for the snacks,” Marty Moore (Matt Moore’s dad).
Come on fat kid, do it for the snacks!
A true Giant…
LMAO…”he played baseball for snacks.” Sounds like my dog in regards to playing ball, or Frisbee! 😉
I used to do dj announcing for non commercial radio station and play late night jazz. Opening tune was Charles Mingus “Tonight at Noon” reference by musicians who would play after hours sessions and use that line to tell buddies when they would hook up next.
Thought of it while watching posts go by from east coast at 2 and 3 AM, plus Paul James Blade from around the world.
Amazing ABs by Giants LH hitters, esp off Chapman and then later to end it all and send crowd home with happy ending. And the $20 mil man is worth every f-ing cent.
At 3am, my email message to my list of doubters.
Some may be frowning this morning…
Backs to the wall in an another elimination game with 100 mph flame thrower Chapman on the mound in the 8th and the next thing you see his head bowed down in a blown game…. Conor did it again.
In the end, last night at 2:45am that epic game ended in the 13th inning becoming the 10th consecutive post season elimination game the Giants have won since 2012.
The Giants play again and are allowed another opportunity to make history.
Wow, against all odds, the Giants have elevated the art of torture to exciting new levels. I set the DVR and went to bed last night. I was just too beat and needed the sleep. I wake up this morning, check the scores online and “Boom!” a miracle of miracles. I watched the eighth before I went to work just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming and there it was.
198 MPH worth of high fastballs, a homer, a triple and 5 RBI’s. Ooof Dah. Conor Gillaspie, instant fall hero
Let it never be said that Conor Gillaspie can’t hit the high hard one. Have the Giants had a lifetime worth of unbelievable moments in the past 6 years or what? Be still my heart.
And 592 posts?! BF, a record?
It’s right up there.
And there was some good stuff in there, like Loo predicting that the Giants would touch up Chapman.
I went to bed not long after the Giants pulled ahead. Sounds like a wild ride from there. I’m still recovering from spending the weekend in LA trying to keep up with my son and his friend and had to get some sleep.
Flav (and others) I think are WAY too hard on Dusty. He’s a very good manager in my opinion and I don’t think he has some “X” factor that prevents him from winning in the playoffs. Hell, several of you had him and the Nats buried already and look what they are doing. I was at Game 7 in 2002 and I thought it was a tough call whether to start Reuter or Livan in that game. Yes, in retrospect it stings that Livan was off and Reuter came in and threw (I think) hitless ball while he was in there.
For me, I always will have bad feelings for Lackey for shutting us down that night. Its cool that he is still around and we get another chance to get over on him.
Dusty made a bad decision yesterday to leave Gonzo in vs Ruiz. It was obvious to anyone who was watching the game that Gonzo was done. What happened? Boom, 2 run bomb. Then he pulls him. They won the game but I am a firm believer in Dusty Baker being a BAD IN GAME DECISION MAKER. He’s great at connecting with the players and shit and that goes a long way. But as a decision maker, I am not a fan.
Agree. 2002…
I was thinking just yesterday that it wouldn’t kill me if the Nats made it to the WS, assuming, of course, that the G’s didn’t, because Dusty is their manager. Let’s not forget that he oversaw the turnaround of an entire franchise, along with Peter Magowan and Barry Bonds. A team that was this close to being the Tampa-St. Pete Whatevers ended up moving into a shiny new ballpark in China Basin.
So, Dawg, I’m with you. He didn’t leave under the best of circumstances after a brutally difficult WS loss, but he led some great Giants teams up until then (including the 2002 team). He’s paid his dues. I wouldn’t mind seeing him get one.
As for Lackey, I’d like to see him get his ass kicked tonight.
Let’s Make History!
Just Win…
While Romo took the blown save, rest of pen was great, 8 shutout innings and Blach mowed them down.
Cubs, not so much. Only tremendous grab off Posey shot to deep RF saved them from losing it earlier.
While I don’t like him, Maddon made a hella move to bring in Chapman and I back him to the hilt. Look what happened to by the book Showalter who left Britton warming up 3 times and never brought him in. High leverage situation with tying run in scoring position and LHs due up, chance for your team to advance…hell yeah you bring in your best arm.
Law was pumped and dealing last night. It seems to me that he’d make a good closer at some point. Blach is intriguing. He’s been lights out since his call up, including, what, 3 innings in the post season? I don’t know what he has, but I think they call it balls.
I’m not down with it at all. Champman hadn’t done a 6 out save in 3 years. He always comes in clean for the 9th, and the situation was much different. 2 on, 0 out, and up by a run in the 8th. I get using your guy, but it put Chapman in a difficult situation. One he isn’t used to.
Balt didn’t have the lead. Granted, I would have brought Britton at some point during the tie, especially in extras, but I think a lot of managers would have played for the lead as well. Especially on the road.
I didn’t think it was a tough call at the time for game 7 because Livan was soooo blase about everything. He drove me nuts. As far as game 6 goes, well, that was Dusty’s combo down the stretch. It cratered the last time . . .
I’m still pissed but I wonder how any other manager would have done it. Most would go the route Dusty did, but Boch? Who knows? Would he sense the moment was too much for F Rod? And it was Scott fucking Speizio. A guy whose name is up there with Jose fucking Okendo.
Crazy to say, but both Bummie and Romo did very well to keep their wits about them while they fucked up so bad. Both kept the damage to the minimum and were able to let the team come back.
Yeah, it would be nice to see a 6-2 job tonight. Sheesh. Law is the new Reverend it looks like.
Speaking of the Rev, he looks fucking completely overmatched.
He needs to stop waving at shoulder-high heaters. He’s been terrible at waiting for a pitch in the zone.
Craig, people who are from the USA, but are expats living in another country, frequently just cross the border for a half hour, hour, day, week, or longer . . . and then re-enter. Quite common in all countries that have simple passport/visa requirements. For example, I have many friends who live in Costa Rica, Panama, Urugruay and Ecuador, who do this. They might want to incorporate a vacation or only stay the amount of time to cross the border and complete the paperwork to get back into the country they are living in. The rule of thumb, insofar as Visa maximum stay seems to be 90 days. Again, not all, but many, many countries have this max. for a tourist visa.
Shit, you can get off the plane in Ecuador and you are immediately covered for health insurance just like the locals. In Panama, if you can show evidence of a pension or a certain amount of savings (I think it is $50,000.00), then you are eligible for retirement discounts, e.g., 50% off airline tickets, movie tickets, health care coverage (I think), etc., etc.
I think Paul usually goes to Bangkok to . . . uhh, have fun and then renews his Visa while there. Again, not certain, so pipe in Paul.
By the by, I totally spaced out on my 2 month Thailand Visa and overstayed . . . Fucking Thai Immigration officials walked me to an ATM machine and got me for $200 or $300 (forgot what the fine was). Fuckers wouldn’t let me leave without paying. lulz.
that $300 went right into their pockets, right?
Last night definitely one of the all timer games. Has to be top 5 in the 2010-2016 period.
Giants get a lead tonite, things could get interesting. WTF NOT?…
If they can somehow win this game, man, what a game 5 that could be. But if Pagan’s back stays fucked up that’s gonna mean 5 lefties going against Lester. Yikes.
It would be extremely nice to see how the Cubs respond playing from behind early in a game. Let’s say 3-0 in the 1st inning.
I stayed up through the end and didn’t even take a nap! Great performance by Blach. Extending Romo last night probably makes him unavailable tonght. I suspect Smith would get the nod if it came down to it. Ideally they jump all over Lackey and make it easy. Yeah right!
Lopez is fresh, right? we had no bench left!
Craig, I’m here on a work permit from the gov’t, sponsored and arranged by my company, and the work permit then gives me a resident card in lieu of visa requirements. Duration changes from time to time, my current one is for 2 years, loved it when it was 3. Then you gotta do it all over again (medical checkup, police check, documents, obviously money, etc.). I do know some foreigners who do the visit-Cambodia-for-2-hours thing, but it seems a bit of a pain, glad I can have the resident card. Although yes, Steve, I happily did occasional visa runs to Bangkok during time in China… Um, baseball. I’ve watched that Dizzy Gillaspie homerun video a dozen times. Keep it up…
Triple, obviously…
Man oh man. I made it to 2:30am, end of 12th. I mean, I could’ve persisted, but who knew if it would last FOREVER [which a game can in theory]. In the night and when I awoke, I refused to look at the final score. And when I did? EVER-LOVING RELIEF AND JOY AND GRATITUDE.
Sorry, triple. Sheesh. I guess it just sort of felt like a homerun….
My wish came true….Kaep starting Sunday for the Niners. I have a feeling he is going to play well.
And I’m hoping his old buddy Alex Smith helps burst the luckier than they are good Raiders bubble, cuz their wacko fans are talking megashit these days.
Bozo was first to make a Dizzy reference to Gillaspie, about one of old Diz great compositions Night in Tunisia.
One of his others was Manteca that got ball rolling for use of latin jazz rhythms in this country late ’40s iirc.
I used to have a supervisor that lived in Manteca CA. great guy who was a little um, stocky and unaware until I told him what the word meant in Spanish…which was their word for “lard.”
Chano Pozo killed it on Manteca didn’t he?
I want to see Lackey bludgeoned.
Stomp the piss out of ’em!!!
Span CF
Belt 1B
Posey C
Pence RF
Crawford SS
Gillaspie 3B
Panik 2B
Blanco LF
Moore P
As I mentioned last night, I went to bed in disgust and utter exhaustion after the Cubs tied it in the eighth. I actually just started with a new company on Monday, so yesterday was my first day, thus my consulting days (i.e. work when I feel like it) and matching GH nap for nap, are all but over. I did have my phone on the KNBR feed as I fell asleep and I must have awoken during the post game as Kruk was all giddy. I knew we won, without knowing the score or details, so I fell back fast asleep.
I was busy as fuck again today (learning systems, processes, who the hell everybody is and what they do) so I am hoping for a quicker thus equally satisfying outcome tonight.
nobody matches GH nap for nap. NOBODY.
Nats strike first.
He’s at it again…
Kershaw gets out of the first only down 1-0, but he’s at 27 pitches and won’t be long for this game if that keeps up.
My understanding is that you can replace an injured player (pagan) but that the injured player must then sit out the next series if U advance. If Pagan is useless die to back, why not replace with Parker or somebody that ca n actually play Now? …
useless to actually play…
Free Parker ’16!
The Flap was a bit overly rough on Vasgersian last night, IMO. I like the guy. He does a nice job in studio shows for MLB Network, combining humor and honest appraisal of things. Admittedly, play-by-play is not his biggest strength; and sure, he, like a lot of the baseball media, is caught up in the Cubs’ quest to break the “curse.” It’s the biggest media narrative of this baseball season. That’s just my opinion on all that. 🙂
I really enjoy him on the morning MLB show that he does as well, though Chris Rose and Kevin Millar are my favorites but I am rarely able to catch their show.
But yeah, he needs to stick to his day job and out of the broadcast booth.
Baker’s gotta get Ross outta there.
Kershaw comes back on three days rest, and Dusty pitches some hack for the Nats.
Nats gotta Nat.
And it was really worth shutting down Strasburg for the playoffs in 2012.
I missed quite a bit yesterday. I have been out of the loop since Friday. I’ll be at the game tonight, way beyond pumped…went to bed after the 9th last night. Couldn’t watch the game anyway had to go sit in my car in front of the house and listen to it. Just need a little more of that EYB
Ahhh, yer killin’ me. Almost had a shot at a ticket.
Tickets are pretty cheap on Stubhub right now. Many tix to be had for under $100
I just checked Stubhub for the hell of it and you get Upper Reserved Infield seats for about $60. Wow!
It’s a gift!
Yeah, it sucks. Had I waited another 90 minutes u probably would have saved 25 or 30 bucks
Harold Reynolds is hilarious. He says the same shit over and over and over. The other night he wouldn’t shut up about the bad lead the runner at first got. Today he must have said 25 times that Kershaw has “given them everything they could ask for.” It’s insane, it’s like he’s got alzheimer’s or something. How can you repeat the same thing this many times?
It’s a tie ballgame!
Dodger bullpen really came up big today.
Man, I would love to see the Dodgers get eliminated before our game starts!
I’m conflicted. On one hand I would love to see them get eliminated now, but on the other hand, I was hoping we could do it.
tons of empty seats in view reserve
Where the fuck are the fans? Did you see the upper deck?
If they were going for $60 on Stubhub two hours before the game, they probably could have been bought for $20 from a scalper ten minutes prior to first pitch.
Their still napping from last nights marathon…
On got your Lackey and raise you a Span!!
There is probably some truth to that. If I was at last nights game, there is no way I would have left early. However I would probably have a hard time motivating myself to do it again. Plus, what could you possibly see tonight that would top last night?
Harper = Ant small
What do you expect from a dot?
Ant small?
Span-Dawg!
Span!
That will work!
That’s the hustle that wins ballgames..
Can’t believe Lackey is still pitching?
Didn’t he face the Giants in the W/S in 2002?
The Rally Law Monkey…Rally Stix!!
Noticed late arrivals getting to their seats top of the first. Is it a traffic issue? Hoe long does it take to get to the upper deck? I’ve never sat up there at ATT….
If Big Fkavor is leading the way, it can take a helluva long time!
Ha! Isn’t there a story behind that from a game you guys went to together?
Yeah…..he got disoriented one time when we were heading up there. It was pretty funny.
San Dawg was like “you’re big flavor, how could this be happening???” It was hilarious.
Span melting cold hearts across the Flap Universe “Viva La Zito” circa 2012.
Dizzy continuing the EYB
Pence ABs are now automatic bathroom breaks for me…
Ditto for Blanco . . . zzzzzz
If we had a reasonable ballpark, he would have had a huge 3 run bomb last night.
San Dog using Trump logic:)
A disgusted look by Bochy as Blanco looks at another strike 3 to kill that rally.
On you skippy you could of started Parker but nooooo…
I like to get a 10 run lead so I can collapse early. I dont think I’ve been up till 4:30 am in a long while like last night. I may have to learn to replenish myself with some fresh blood in the middle of the night ala Draculoo…
Thirty plus years since I pulled an “all nighter” and it involved a white powder.
David Ross? Are you fucking kidding me? I don’t think I have selected him in DFS EVER!
I’m so sick of this shit fuck old man David Ross getting big hits against us
That homer was not much more than a decently hit fly ball.
Why can’t our righties do that once in a while?
He’s safe. If they fuck Span again on this I quit replay forever.
Yep, safe. Easily.
Span basically can’t steal. The only guy that can steal is Specs; Noonie if his hammy isn’t shredded…
Wow they finally got a call right..
Replay officials confer:
Didn’t stop Vasgergian from creaming himself for 5 minutes after the overturn.
Pence doing esentially nothing at the plate really hurts…
I am appreciating Span’s aggressiveness tonight. Tagging to 3rd and the steal attempt was fine, Baez made an amazing catch and tag there.
Third time through the lineup we will get to Lackey…we should make the park more difficult for right-handed ancient batters like Ross to hit one out:)
By doing what?
Tongue firmly planted in cheek aimed at San Dog…I was so tired today Dog I passed up a golf tourney at an Ernie Els designed course in MD…
Thumbs up
That was a much needed DP. Moore was laboring a bit there.
Dizzy is on fire.
So is Panik…
Can Blanco lay a safety squeeze down???
Panik just knows how to hit.
Been just a tough season with the concussion/ back etc but I still stand with my prediction he wins a batting title some year…
Payback!
Do it for snacks….
Fuck the DH!
Lackey is a sucker…
Take that Cubbies!
Wow, that was lucky — Lackey F’d up, we’ll take it. Let’s get more, Belt…
Good place for you Lackey on your belly!!
Time for a Belt.
