The Longest of Odds
Somehow I missed this yesterday: The Span Man hit a home run. Did anyone see it? This is incredible. Also, a championship was won at Dodger Stadium. Therefore, I will declare yesterday to be “Miracle Day.”
Seriously, a Span bomb and a championship at Dodger Stadium. I’m still trying to calculate the longshot odds of that bizarre, unlikely exacta from coming in on the SAME DAY.
Also, left field. WordPress has upgraded something and now, of course, I can’t find where they put the polls. So let’s go “old school” and you can just put your preference in the comment section below. Would you like to see Pagan signed and inserted into LF or would you rather see Parker out there?
I’ll cast the first vote for….Parker.

Parker.
We’ve turned the page on Pagan, and I say let it be. The team needs to keep trying to get younger.
Pagan as insurance.
Zum is right, time to find out if Parker is the answer. I think he could hit 15-20 HRs, and once Williamson’s leg heals he should be in there too.
Pagan could probably help LA, and just like Romo he can wave his rings in their faces as someone who has been a part of winning a World Series, something they know nothing about.
Colin Kaep thought for the day: I don’t get why people are wondering why he hasn’t found a job. Blackballed? Absurd. If he was an elite QB he’d have several offers. He stinks, he’s an absolute SHELL of what he was in 2012. And NFL owners shouldn’t be forced to hire back up QB’s who come with a lot of baggage…..
Disagree. There are a lot of crummy QBs that will find work in the NFL somewhere, including one already on board here. I read yesterday Geno Smith signed–end of story.
There is significant fanbase in every NFL city I imagine that hates him with a passion regardless of talent level or respect of his peers. I was surprised at what I read from bloggers on football sites; how many absolutely revile him and their level of vitriol. Any team known to make overtures will face a severe backlash, and this has everything to do with how he has expressed himself.
my point is that all he is is a back up QB and a borderline one at that. So why deal with him if you are going to get backlash from your fanbase about him? He’s simply not worth the hassle.
That’s basically being blackballed, isn’t it?
blackballed would be what happened to Barry. Barry couldn’t find a job and he was still very productive. In my opinion, Kaep is below replacement level (possibly at it). Owners shouldn’t be forced to pay someone to be at or below replacement level.
LMAO – Those ARE some long odds. Maybe not as long as the odds for Leicester City to win the 2015–16 Premier League (I think they were like 2000-1 or 5000-1 odds)…which they did…
Zumiee – I get the team trying to get younger in the OF. Parker is a good start. But when you look at the current possibilities for OF help this year, it looks grim. If Pagan would take a one-year deal, I think the team would be foolish to not jump on that. I recall your post a couple of days ago about Tanner Roark starting last night’s game (you were underwhelmed, I believe). That kid pitched the game of a lifetime last night. That was a pitching clinic if I ever saw one.
The Giants game is on live TV tonight.
Nor. Calif.- Bay Area Comcast.
The rest of the nation- MLB Network.
7:00 Pacific Time
Thank goodness I missed it. By the time I tuned in, it was already 8-0….
Big moment today, early in Trump’s term. The House votes on the rather bad (in my opinion) Ryan/Trump healthcare bill.
Parker. Re healthcare. I think they will pass it, then see what’s in it…
Early reports are it’s going to be close.
Parker for sure. And especially after seeing Pagan and all his compadres sporting the beach blonde hair do’s last night. No chance they were winning the championship with that look..
Parker should get the nod to start, but with the other current possibilities for an additional OFer, I would try to sign Pagan to a one year deal.
Parker and Mac when he’s healthy. We want bombs. Pagan ain’t gonna give us many of those.
As for the championship won at Dodger Stadium, keep in mind it was the visiting team that won it.
Parker, who will one day tell his grandchildren that the first fan to ever approach him as a major leaguer was me…
Parker. Pagan, only as a fifth OF if no one else grabs him.
Flav, Geno Smith got signed. Geno Smith. Kaepernick is a shit-ton better than Geno Pizza Roll. And Orange Julius Caesar touting that he GOT him blackballed sets up a collusion lawsuit. Trump screams ‘sue!’ all the time. Time for him to get some.
again, if the task is to pick a player from a pool of shitty players you pick the player who isn’t going to help you much but you need to fill out the rest of your team AND who isn’t going to cause problems with your fan base. If the task was to pick a player from a pool of studs maybe you pick Kaep because he’ll make your team better and the risk of turning off the fanbase is much less.
Guys like Kaep, at this point in his career, are a dime a dozen. Owners shouldn’t be forced to have to sign a guy who’s a dime a dozen.
Then it’s OK for the owners to collude and not sign him because he’s exercising his rights as a citizen? Fuck that. Again, hiring wife-beaters and guys who kill people while driving drunk is AOK to the NFL (Budweiser, anyone?). Come on down, Pacman! Greg Hardy? Welcome!!! Donte Stallworth? No harm, no foul (since you can afford to pay off the family).
My point is, he would be a lot better than a few starters out there, let alone the backups. Kappy has had a dogshit team around him for 2 years now, the coaching has been awful, and he isn’t as bad as what has been shown. take a look at Alex Smith for an example of a guy who had shitty coaching.
He’s not a 3rd string guy hanging on. He’s a decent QB on a dogshit team. If he was on the Broncos last year they would have made the playoffs.
Zumie, if this healthcare bill passes as is there will be armed riots in the streets within 6 months of deploying it.
I doubt there will be armed riots. I guess that’s possible. I think more likely we’ll just see people slowly start to die who otherwise would probably stay alive.
Ho hum, eh? The insulation of the government from the people is happening right now. If this trend continues, we will be removed from the process entirely.
ShopTalk, with Daniel is happening TOMORROW. Here’s his thread from today, he features me and two other blogs. Interesting to see our three different takes. Anyway, tomorrow he will likely be around to bounce opinions off of. Here’s the link to his blog today, I’ll probably re-link it again tomorrow morning.

these are awesome. I’ve read some of earlier ones from different teams’ bloggers, very interesting.
Good stuff…thanks for the share.
Kind of ironic 7 yr anniversary of O Care. Doesn’t look like Ryan and T are going to get anything done since their own can’t agree on what is proposed and this in the House where they have control still. Those who helped put the T in there are pissed at what he’s come up with and won’t back it. Their own constituents realize they are going to get screwed and T isn’t able to do what he promised (a little too late, lol).
too many issues—they’ve taken away taxes on rich (who save a ton of $$ on their plan) and don’t want to cover poor elderly disabled without taking away profit margin of insurers or drug companies. so less will have care ultimately, and others will pay more for it as they age and have more health issues.
Unless govt gets involved in a big way and ignores deficits, and not by cutting state subsidies, no way health care in America ever works for everyone. we won’t pay taxes like they do in Scandinavia, and we won’t cap profits of those who make out like they do in Switzerland. Lose lose.
Citizens United and unfettered lobbyist access to those in Congress are the 2 biggest impediments to any meaningful change.
Term limits would be a big first step to holding these guys accountable.
I emphatically feel that Citizens United is the single biggest threat to our democracy. When people like the Koch brothers can throw unlimited amounts of money at a campaign or candidate, that is NOT a true democracy. We are drifting further and further away from being a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. I am a huge proponent of having all elections being publicly financed. There needs to be true transparency from where the money is coming for elections.
On health care, the ACA has major issues, but the AHCA is a fucking train wreck waiting to happen (unless you are very rich). I am a firm believer in universal health/a single payer system. Here in CA state senator Lara has introduced legislation for a state-based single payer health care system. Given the dems control both the house and senate in CA, and with Jerry Brown as governor, I think the bill has a true chance of passing.
No on Pagan. No on ObamaCare. Both are financially irresponsible.
And stay off your lawn! 🙂
It may not be perfect, but it is better than the new alternative.
The ACA has its problems, no doubt, but it is a whole hell of a lot better than what is being proposed by Ryan and Trump. And the kicker is that Trump during the campaign, on 60 Minutes, insisted that he would institute a health care plan where everyone would have insurance. Yeah, right…
If Obamacare is not replaced and not sure they can pass a replacement, Obamacare will financially collapse in the near future because most providers will pull out and it becomes financially unsustainable. Any insurer who offers health insurance in any state should be forced to compete in every state…
Agreed.
Bullshit. The probloems with Obamacare are a pittance compared to the debacle it took Ryan and theRepublicans7 years to come up with.
question for you guys: do any of you not get health coverage through your work? If so, what do you use?
I had to go on Kaiser out of pocket (1099 contractor) about 14 years ago. It was $1,200 a month. can’t imagine it being cheaper should anyone have to pay for their own these days without the ACA. Or even with.
that’s insane.
Just saw where the vote on the AHCA has been delayed. Ultra conservatives and moderates both have issues with the bill. Big blow to Ryan and Trump. Doom Da Doom Doom…
They are saying it may come up for vote in the next couple of days…
Per the Associated Press piece I read: “a Quinnipiac University poll found that people disapprove of the GOP legislation by 56 percent to 17 percent, with 26 percent undecided. Trump’s handling of health care was viewed unfavorably by 6 in 10.
The survey was conducted March 16 to 21 with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.”
Getting out of the House, maybe tomorrow but not a great bill in first place and no need to get done tomorrow, is likely. I don’t think they can get it out of the Senate as is…
Parker…for now…I watched Zippo of the Classic. Did Pagan look mobile enough to backup cf?
I’m skeptical he’s got much centerfielding left in him.
I do not want him for CF. I want him as predominantly a back-up in LF. Probably not happening…
The Koch brothers are only the second most dangerous right wing billionaires steering the country to hell. The Mercers are the ones. They engineered the big shake up in Trump’s campaign in August that tossed Manafort and installed Bannon has head of the campaign. This article covers it pretty well. And yes, the Citizens United SCt decision really does allow the fanatical billionaires to run the country.

The Giants game is starting right now. 45 minutes earlier than listed.
Moore is not awesome tonight.
All about March Madness for me right now Zumie..Ok except for Giants W/S Championships which all of us waited a eternity to have the satisfaction to finally do the “Fuck yeah Knowing Nod” starting in 2010!!
But March Madness which I participate with Buddy’s 16 people (Mostly guys, but a few ladies as well get 4 picks(all drawn out of hat 🎩 for your start number.16 then back down with 16 gets 2 picks in a row back to 1 who then gets 2 back up the picks.for years and you sit around drink beers&smoke a real good cigar (Had a few Cuban’s Romeo Juliet’s illegally) is undeniably the best as you try to 1 up your friends in the tournament, furiously checking out stats and RPI ratings & strength of schedules, it’s a chess match at times as your hoping for a checkmate.Thing is you have shitty W/S at times, Football SB’s,Pro Basketball,Hockey etc.. But these College games are incredible usually coming down to a buzzer beater are OT just fantastic every round!
Fighting Ducks!
In the “how many HRs will Belt hit” thread I already predicted that Parker will lead the team in HRs this year, so, yeah, he’d better be starting in LF…. 🙂 Pagan as a one-year backup might be better than anyone slated for 4th or 5th OFer at this point, although I’d still like to see Marrero make it.
The Giants are playing like poo poo tonight.
I’ve got Kansas to take it all..Between Mason,Graham, and the incredible freshman Jackson I’m feeling confident with that 🔥 firepower. But of course it’s March Madness and Purdue’s hanging in there like what it always is these tournaments..
How about them Musketeers!!
Xavier another one of my teams moving on!
Bring on Gonzaga baby!
Down goes ‘Zona!
bigs unable to defend inside. X ran better sets and got better shots.
Didn’t care for Miller’s O vs. zone either—too much dribbling not enough ball reversal to set up shooters.
High post should have been in middle of FT line for a pass/shot instead of trying to screen one of the guards, out of which they got nothing.
The Giants started a lineup of mostly scrubinis against King Felix, and it didn’t go well.
Go Zags!!!
Nunez had 2 cortisone shots for his ailing throwing shoulder. Pavs said might DH this weekend but not play in the field; might be OK for Opening Day. Hmmnn.
Damn…I did not know that Nunie had a shoulder issue. Might be OK for Opening Day…not good.
Backing up Craw at SS has to take up one of the bench spots, right? This sounds like an issue to me.
Hill is 34-35 and hasn’t played there in 10 yrs, and Gillaspie obviously can’t either. Nunez has been a SS back up since Yanks days. Specs (with the dreaded options) doesn’t seem is even going to make the club so who gives Craw a day off?
Good question – I didn’t realize it had been so long since Hill played SS. May help Specs make the 25 until Nunie heals. I think he has options left…but am not sure the full status there.
The Giants game today is live on the MLB Network at 1 PM, I think.
One of the latest adjustments to the Ryan/Trump healthcare bill is to cut coverage of maternity, and “wellness visits,” which I guess means what used to be called “an annual check-up.”
This is truly a terrible bill.
Will Smith season is done. TJ surgery.
When he went for the MRI the other day, and there was discussion on what they already knew…I am not surprised at all.
Will be interesting to see who gets plugged-in. I am guessing they try to put Osich there, but he has been so damned inconsistent, plus I always saw Osich as more a lefty-specialist.
My greatest memory of Will Smith will be….
Uh….I don’t have any.
The house republitards just pulled their train wreck of a health care bill and will not vote today (as trump said they would). These guys are just stepping all over their dicks…aye aye aye…
They had seven years to put a bill together and this is the awesome bill they came up with.
LMAO…hilarious. Total fucking ineptitude. I saw a couple of repub house cronies saying that a no vote or failure would at least preserve the repub majority for 2018. Really? Because after seven years you failed to pass a bill, especially one that IMPROVES on the current system (which has its flaws, not doubt).
A lot of starters in the Giants lineup today.
Specs rips a triple.
He SHOULD be on the opening day roster.
Belt goes yard!
He SHOULD be on the opening day roster.
Yeah, the Republicans are efficient if nothing else. 7 years to finely tune their healthcare act that would replace the ‘disaster’ of Obamacare. And they come up with something that must have been written by the CEOs of Blue Cross, Aetna, and the United Health Group.
Stupid fucking assholes. There better be a purge next year. Mitch McConnell has done more to destroy America than Isis and Al Qaeda combined.
And his fucking toadie Paul Ryan.
Tell us how ya really feel, Charlie. 😉 I am with ya, brother.
hehe heh
Specs better get on the team over (I’m not Henry) Rollins.
If the goal is to have the best roster possible, it has to be Specs. If it’s Rollins, then the “fix was in,” to quote WillieD.
Especially with Nunie’s sore shoulder, they need someone to back Craw at SS. As WillieD mentioned earlier, Hill has not played SS in 10 years, and Gillaspie never has at the ML level.
Who really needs a fuckin’ wellness visit every year?
It’s not a terrible idea.
You want to pay $300.00 for your hangover cure? Aspirin?
Span: 3 hits. And just got picked off firstbase.
Kontos: Mr. Mediocre
Marrero goes yard again this Spring.
6 HRs!
What positions can he play?
I believe OF and maybe 1b Loo…
Law got roughed up in the 9th.
Doesn’t Rollins still being here, despite his .088 BA, make you wonder if he was in no matter what? They already gave Beckham his release because they told him he’d have to go to Sac so he wanted to try and hook on elsewhere. What’s the point of keeping Rollins around?
Good question. If they release him now, it would at least give him also a chance to hook up with another team.
He’s just a greedy fuck who should step the fuck aside and give someone else a chance to make $100 million fuckin’ dollars like he already has…
Agree Willied,
Keeping O88 around this long just about confirms he sticks! Really pathetic the Giants continue this maddening pattern.
Rollins like a lot of overcooked vets taking a roster spot(hmm Cain comes to mind, but his is all about the coin, the G’s will try a squeeze something out of nothing before his release)it’s frustrating cause most geriatric players look at the Giants 1st for a tryout knowing their bite first on the bait due to their track record of vet signings..
Shit if your gonna keep Jimmy Rollins I say he competes with Shaun Dunston for the backup SS job!
An Agent OOO sighting. He’s trying to make the Twins’ roster.
No doctor ever did shit for me unless it was in the emergency room…
lol, with you on this.
I got a huge shot of morphine in the ER in Cuernavaca. Fixed most of the trouble.
Ha! Me too years ago for pain associated with kidney stones. Kidney stones were the worst pain I have ever experienced. Shot of morphine…what pain???
Wellness my ass…
Over here, to renew my work permit and residence visa, I must do a “health check” every time the visa is up for renewal. “Do you drink alcohol?” Me: check. “Do you smoke?” Me: uh…. um…. check? “Still have high blood pressure?” Double check. Ok, there’s my health check….
I wonder how many players hang on as long as possible just to stay away from their wives…
I really thought UCLA would show a bit more against Kantuck. This Wisconsin-Fla game is a damned good one!
Wow! I am not believing that OT finish…Florida knife to the heart three, at the buzzer. Damn…
You can’t beat the Madness Chi!!
Unbelievable Shot for the 3 at the buzzer. And How about Rick Barry’s kid making that huge block on a breakaway layup that helped save their bacon 🥓??
Rick Barry has a kid in college??? His older ones are already retired from the NBA.
Yeah, a child with a different, younger wife.
Got to hand it to Rick the Dick, he can’t grow hair but he still pumps out kids!
