A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

So Where Do We Go From Here

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 1, 2017

I am generally a pretty positive person. I just don’t ignore reality. I’m trying to find something to hang on to that looks like hope for the 2017 Giants season and I’m just not seeing anything realistic to grasp.

Marty Lurie likes to do a show where he has caller finish sentences. I think he does this to focus them and lessen the chances they go on some dumb fan-tangent. One of the sentences he floated yesterday: “The Giants still have a chance this year because….” One person said “because there are still 136 games left.”

Sorry, that one doesn’t work for me. That’s just a fantastic opportunity to go 36-100 the rest of the way.

In order for optimism to bloom there has to be something the team is good at. Even one thing. Let’s take a look at what we aren’t good at. It’s pretty encompassing.

  1. We are slow. We are last in the NL in SB’s with 11 and now that Nunie is jogging the bases instead of flying around like his helmet’s on fire I expect that number to sit quietly where it is.
  2. We are weak. We are last in the NL in HR’s with 16.
  3. We don’t get on base. We are 2nd to last in OBP checking in at a pathetic .289. We are ahead of only the Padres who have been kicking the shit out of us this year….
  4. We are bad at pitching. Our team ERA is 4.45. That is 10th in the NL and behind the Brewers and the Phillies. Think for a second how bad our pitching has to be to be BEHIND those 2 homer happy parks.
  5. We lead the NL in blown saves with 5. So even if we do some how luck our way into a lead we blow it.

And there you have it. There are 136 games left. How many would need to be left for us to win 90 games if these 5 points hold true? 220? 500? More?

well, other than steals I don’t think the other things will hold true for rest of season, 85% of which still remains.
I do believe Giants will hit better and get on base more.
Blach put in Bum like performance in his stead and I don’t think Cueto is a 5.00+ ERA guy either. SPs should be fine, which lowers the ERA quite a bit.
Mac/Morse can hit HRs, more so than Marrero/Gorkys. It’s the others who need to step it up–Pence Craw Posey Belt yada yada.
Nunez needs to actually get on base before he can use his speed. Specs can run some too but, to paraphrase Howlin Wolf, they are “built for comfort.”

Good post, WillieD, and I love the Howlin Wolf reference. I agree with you on almost all points, but DAMN, this team is hard to watch right now.

Well, that’s a lovely, depressing post to start the week with. Unfortunately, it’s right on the money. Willie’s post notwithstanding, the starters have been the best part of the team all season, so far.

As for power, I don’t expect that to change drastically because we just don’t have a lineup stacked with sluggers, or even one legitimate power hitter, and haven’t for quite a few years. More will come, but we’ll always be near the bottom of the league in HR’s, true to form right through the WS years. Pence is getting old. Posey has turned into a punch-and-judy hitter, who’s primary value now lies in his Gold Glove defense. Morse has pop, but I’m not expecting big things from an aging slugger. Belt has power, but is extremely inconsistent. Crawford will hit a few, same for Panik. This team simply wasn’t built with power in mind.

As for speed, outside of Nunez there are no base stealers, another thing the Giants have rarely been known for and they certainly aren’t fast now. That will not change. If anyone disagrees, please point to the players who’ll make that happen.

You’d expect the OBP to get better if only because it’s so bad now, but there are also a lot of hackers on this team and too many guys who vanish for long stretches. Is anyone really that confident that Brandon Belt is still going to have that be “break-out” season we’ve all been pining for the last 5 years. I think he is what he is and that’s all we’re going to get.

The pen stinks and that’s just the name of that tune. Melancon couldn’t even shut down the fucking Padres to give the Giants a winning homestand. I believe he’s a good pitcher, but blown saves like yesterday’s are inexcusable.

Right now, it’s all about the W’s for me. The Giants are the worst team in the NL West and it’s hard to see a scenario whereby that changes.

  3. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 1, 2017 at 7:51 am

I am also pretty damned optimistic, but also a realist. Shit is definitely bleak right now.

To your and LJ’s point on the lack of HRs, Flav, I don’t think a lack of power is the issue. As LJ said, this team was never a team full of bashers, even in the WS years. They need to get on base (OBP IS an issue), and they need to hit for average, and get the key knocks with RISP.

The bullpen remains problematic, and I don’t see any short-term answers there. Guys need to do their fucking jobs. Thank god Ramirez is gone. Since the 25 was first announce, for the life of me I could not figure out how he made the team.

So, I have traded in my rose-colored Pollyanna shades for a pair of dark as fuck ones, because this team as it sits now is damned near unwatchable.

Agree there appears to be little to boost the optimism at this point, but given we are still so damned early in the season, I am not completely waving the white flag.

I agree…I have always liked this dude, because he does have nasty stuff…not sure what the fuck the problem is…but he sure as fuck isn’t a good option right now. His Sacto numbers:

        9.1 IP, 12 H, 11 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 8 Ks (no HRs), 7.71/1.607. OUCH.

WTF is up with that pic? Girl escaping the Russian mob?

Boring and flat. Not even Christian Arroyo’s youthful energy has woken up the slumbering Giants. And we’ve had our share of injuries, but for all that, Pence looks old and crappy, Posey isn’t driving the ball anywhere, Belt is his usual all-over-the-place self, Panik is doing OK, Craw will be back soon, but the OF and pen are twin disasters. The things EVERYONE wanted the team to fix.

The starters should coma around but we just saw 3 very good starts net one win. Huzzah.

  6. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 1, 2017 at 9:06 am

Posey’ still hitting but now his power has disappeared maybe all the catching is starting to take its toll. He’s starting to remind me of Jason Kendall. Hundley’s not helping carring the load which hurts too! Thought he would show some power just isn’t happening..

The shut down Pen is gone.
That patched up a lot of the holes of a pretty anemic offense the last half decade or more. Used to be if you were up 2-0 heading into the 6th or 7th, that was a win. No more…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2017 at 9:28 am

Yep. I’ll go further . . . This is the secret recipe for the Giants 3 World Series (and sorry Loo, it wasn’t luck):

Hit a little. Catch the ball. Buy or develop an ace pitcher. Shorten the game by investing in a trio of overpowering relief pitchers for the final three innings. Pitchers for “high-leverage” situations matter; hitters do not, unless one of them is an elite catcher. Then make sure you have enough competent players to get to the play-offs in the first place.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2017 at 9:33 am

By the by, it is telling that of the 25 Giants who won the World Series in 2014, only two position players (Posey and Sandoval) were around for all three championships. Six Giants pitchers, however, won rings in 2010, 2012 and 2014. In short, for the Giants, it always starts with the pitching.

  8. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 1, 2017 at 9:29 am

I actually am not down on Melancon at all—certainly not as much as the collective offense. He’s been fine since the first game of the season and then he threw one stupid pitch yesterday. Otherwise, he’s done his job.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2017 at 9:36 am

Actually, “the first game of the season” he blew the lead too (resulting in a blown save).

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 1, 2017 at 9:48 am

I know. I said that. “Since the first game” as in “he blew that one and has been great since till the one pitch from yesterday. ” Look, closers aren’t perfect. As long as he doesn’t turn into “head case” Casilla we’re fine there.

  11. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 1, 2017 at 10:17 am

I still say the main issues are the pen, OBP, and getting the key knock.

Giants played 11 one run games in April and went 4-7. All, except a 2-1 W against the Royals were in division.

So, if the team had done what it takes (on base, key knock, lock-down pen), and turned four of the seven one run games into Ws, the team would be 13-13 and 2.5 back instead of 9-17 and five back.

Point is that they have played in some tight games, even with their sucktitude, so some minor tweaks here and there could make a big difference.

Yeah, they still suck ass right now, but as early as it is, no way I am writing off the season.

From Stix Letter. First 2 pages he talks about the Giants, he follows along with the box scores he reads in the paper.
    Third page:
“personally my health has taken a tumble. Currently sitting in a wheel chair (3 months now). The food in this joint succeeded in giving me type 2 diabetes. Back in dec I started losing weight rapidly. black outs. Taken to in house clinic, they ran tests, diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure and a urinary trac infection. I blame it on the food. For months my breakfast consisted of fruit loops, a chunk of cake, a hard boiled egg and a concoction labled “orange drink” which first listed ingredient is filtered water. My reconing is that the breakfast runs 80% carbs and sugar. Lunch and dinner almost as bad.”
My summary of the rest, his comments in quotes:
He can’t take phone calls because they begin at $2.14 for the first min and .29 cents each additional minute and he’s got no money on his account.
Says the guards are ok but he was sent to “The Gama” for 3 weeks punishment for having 2 apples in his cell (contraband from food trays) which he needed for mid night snacks as he combats insomnia on his concret cot. Gama is a 21 hour lockdown.
He requested a deposition for the court alluding to our perceptions of his character. He didn’t give an address of where to send this. XOOT any idea where we could send a letter like this?
“I got stuck in this purgatory by the court cause the prosecutor convinced the judge that I, with no history of felonies nor any history of violence, constitute a danger to society and cannot be released from custody pre-trial. Quite the inside education I’ve gotten on the state of justice in America. Go Giants!”

I was aware of some of the food and health issues from a brief Stix’s public defender filed on his behalf a couple of months back. Effing outrageous to treat him that way. The judge denied a motion his lawyer made to have him released to home custody at his sister’s house on the ground that Stix is a danger to society. No bail (federal court). Sounds like very cruel, although perhaps not unusual, punishment to me.

I would contact his public defender directly to see what sort of character evidence might be useful. It’ll only get into the court proceedings through his lawyers. There are two women listed on his case now, a senior lawyer and a younger one. As I told Chuck some time back, it looks to me like those lawyers are working pretty hard on Stix’s behalf. But I’m not a criminal lawyer, so maybe I’m over-estimating their work. Or just hoping for the best.

Market has ignored the DC Moron, so back to where I was.

I feel bad for Stix. I’ve never been in a situation like him, although I’ve been in jail a number of times, including 6 months of weekends at Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas. Not a pleasant experience, however, not even close to what Stix is experiencing. They let us out frequently to do work in the facility and outside the facility. In fact, more times than not, I was planting trees and shrubs all over the South Bay. I still visit “my trees” in Mountain View and Palo Alto to reflect on the significant spiritual and lifestyle changes I made in my life at age 31.

That being said, I can not even imagine being locked up 24/7 and being served a breakfast of “Fruit Loops” and other hideous garbage. I would either go on a hunger strike or only buy from the prison cantine. Thanks for sharing this Flavor. I will pray for him.

Everyone here has their opinions about Stix and I respect where all are coming from, especially since none of us know the entire story. My take is that he did something stupid, probably high as fuck, but he regrets it and should be allowed to live out the rest of his short life in some type of free environment. Didn’t seem like he was bothering anyone living the way he was living but again, I don’t know the whole story. He’s a Giants fan though and until I hear about something he did that was worse than shooting up a helicopter where no one was seriously injured I’m on his side and rooting for him. I would send a letter of support if I knew where to send it. If he got out, I’m reasonably confident that he’d live out the rest of his life without issues.

I feel very sorry for him, but I think their fear of what he might do has some legitimacy to it. If released, could he be trusted 100% to not take a shot at a police officer? A judge has to weigh that in their mind.
There’s no way he should be served crappy meals, though. That’s inexcusable. It wouldn’t be that hard to serve those guys better meals, at probably the same cost to the government. And in the long run, it would save more money to have those guys in better health.

If his address is being withheld by someone in the court or jail system, that’s bullshit. If an address can be found, I’d commit to sending him a letter, even though he doesn’t know me from Adam. Handwriting, pens, good paper, letters are kind of my thing and I still think people appreciate the effort behind an “old-fashioned” handwritten letter, especially if they’re rotting in some fucking jail somewhere. I can make quite the production out of it.

I’d think his lawyer would have to offer a mailing address if asked. We’re not living in red China, fer crisssakes.

Did the Elmwood deal for 8 weekends, Blade. Back in January-Feb 1983. The reason I remember is I missed Super Bowl XVII between Washington and Miami. The highlight of the time was getting to wash buses. The rest was laying around in the Elmwood parking lot.

That really sucks re: Stix. When you are at the mercy of the system, they pretty much can run roughshod over the you. Being young you at least can survive the food. And every county jail or DOC is run by a different system. Some are good, some are not so good. Some are flat terrible. If you live in a county with no money, you get screwed, and you get the cheapest grub available, like the shit Stix is getting. Older guys have it real rough for that reason. The for-profit prisons that are popping up (the new rage), will be 5x worse. Comparatively the food in Monterey County (Salinas) was a OK. Beans and the occasional hotdog.

However, it seems the only potential silver lining in all of this, is that common sense says that a seemingly harmless 70 year plus old man, confined to a wheel chair, should be released to live out his remaining days. I hope that happens.

Just wrote him a short note via his attorney . . .

    Good afternoon Mr. Elkins,

My name is Steven Joseph Melikean and I am an online friend of Carstie Clausen. I understand you are the lead attorney defending Carstie and I would be very grateful if you were to forward the following message to him . . . If that is not possible due to jail restrictions/rules, I understand completely. If the aforementioned is the case, than please minimally convey that I am thinking of him and praying for a positive outcome to his court case. At the end of my message, I will provide pertinent information regarding my address and telephone number, so that you know that I am a real person. Thank you for assisting me in this matter.

    Hi Stix,

I know that you probably can not discuss your case or circumstances, which find you in jail and on trial. No worries . . . I just wanted to send you a line, letting you know that you’re in my thoughts. Similarly, everyone from the Flap blog is thinking of you. We all miss you and your observations about our mutual love, the San Francisco Giants. Equally important, we miss your insights about life in general, as well as your life specifically, living in the “frozen tundra” of Minnesota. Grin.

As you might be aware, our SF Giants are not doing too well, i.e., they are in last place at the moment . . . and it doesn’t seem that they will extricate themselves from this situation any time soon. Tonight, they face the Bums and Kershaw. Sigh. There are so many holes in this team, that I wouldn’t know where to start, insofar as explaining their woeful state. So, I will let others from the Flap do that.

This might be a surprise to you . . . I am married and my wife is expecting a child. Her name is Linh and she is from Vietnam. She has a child from an earlier marriage, named Trui. He is 3 years old. I love him as if he was my own son. Eventually, I will transition to Vietnam. I’m thinking it will take approximately 1-2 years to make this transition. Right now, I am in Colorado, but I will be going back to Saigon next week. Our baby is due on July 14th according to the doctors.

Well, I am going to sign off here. I just want you to know that you’re in my prayers and thoughts. I don’t have much wisdom to impart, except, stay positive and in the moment. As difficult as your situation is, It’s been my experience, that I have control over only 2 things in my life: 1. My attitude; and, 2. My relationship with the universe (or God if you are religious). Everything else – people, places, and things – that’s not my concern. Love you much and stay POSITIVE!

    Steven “Blade” Melikean

This season is feeling more and more like Miguel Tejada’s introductory press conference.

    Gorkys LF
    Arroyo 3B
    Pence RF
    Posey C
    Morse 1B
    Nuñez SS
    Panik 2B
    Stubbs CF
    Cueto P

    Go Giants?

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2017 at 4:06 pm

No kidding Dirt. I wonder what’s wrong with Belt (other than the fact, he bats left and Kershaw probably owns him)? Seriously think there’s no hit potential in this LU.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 1, 2017 at 4:30 pm

I can imagine the despair Bochy felt when he felt he had to pencil in Gorkys as his lead-off hitter tonight.
I don’t agree with that choice, but I sympathize with his despair.
The SABR philosophy is to put the 3 highest OBP guys in the top three spots, regardless of power or speed. So that’s why the Cubs bat Bryant second.
Looking at tonight’s starters, it should be something like:
      Arroyo
      Panik
      Posey
as the top 3 hitters. Arroyo being up there mainly based on potential. I do like seeing him in the two-hole tonight. Again, just for potential.

  27. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 1, 2017 at 4:45 pm

I don’t think the LU really matters when you’re talking about that many guys who can’t hit right now. Would it really surprise you if Kershaw struck out 7 or the first 9 hitters tonight? It wouldn’t surprise me in the least. Maybe Buster and Panik make contact, put the ball into play.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 1, 2017 at 5:26 pm

That’s a good point; but it does make Bochy look kind of indifferent, SABR-wise; which is not a big deal, overall. Bochy’s sporting 3 rings, and a bunch of SABR-centric managers are sporting none.
It just seems kind of…..tired starting Gorkys at leadoff again, though.

Not to be overly negative, but you do wonder if Kershaw is just going to flat-out no-hit us one of these times.
I have no explanation why his playoff record is what it is; he is so awesome during the regular season. I think one factor (for the playoffs) could be he just can’t seem to go past 7 innings very often. His pitch-count gets to him. That’s one thing about strike-out pitchers; sometimes they have to throw a lot of pitches to get all those strikeouts.
As a 20 year old, Bumgarner threw 8 shut-out innings vs. Texas in the World Series. Has Kershaw ever had a playoff outing like that? Even once? And Bum’s had several like that.
Think about what Timmy did to Atlanta in ’10 in game 1 of that playoff series. Has Kershaw ever had a playoff outing like that?
