A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Walk Off

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 13, 2017

Buster Posey’s home run was the first in the 17th inning or later by a Giant since Jim Davenport hit one on May 13, 1966.

Of course that’s not true, we all remember Belt’s bomb against the Nats. I just thought this tweet from Baggarly read kinda cool.

As usual, props to anyone who made it till the end last night, especially the east coast squad. I’m now leaving for Sac, gotta be there by 7am.

Wow! What a fucking poke! I bailed in the 13th…had to be up at 5 for a trip to Fairfield to compete with my dog. Damn!

    Go get ’em today!

Flav – you catching a River Kitty game in Sactown while there?

    Enjoy the weekend girls!

And any Right Coast Flappers who made it to the end…we’re not worthy! ⚾️

Bailed in 14th. Wasn’t easy but 9 shutout innings by pen. Posey caught 269 pitches and today is day game so lot of guys on both sides gotta be tanked.
The guy I won’t mention as their leadoff went 0-7 and left 5 guys on base, No steals no runs scored.
Btw, looking at Reds LU they have half a dozen guys with .848 OPS or better and .500 slugging. Guy at top is under .700 but obviously has a lot of help behind him. Votto is awesome and has lost a few HRs here already.

Contrast that with Giants where Posey is only guy over .850—Belt is now batting .217 and Pence Craw Panik Nunez all under .700 OPS and kid is batting .236. Thursday game they had bunch of hits just not at right times to drive in run they needed, even vs. Bronson Arroyo.

Life in sunny Campbell is good, shorts and sandals weather. Like Reds mgr said, after playing that long mood in Giants clubhouse is a lot different than theirs.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 13, 2017 at 8:06 am

5 left on base? Who cares, that’s not his job. As I said yesterday, he’s scored in 11 straight till last night. Find a Giant who’s within a country mile of that and get back to me

Don’t piss Flavor off about Hamilton. You could end up with Baldy.

I haven’t worn shorts since I was 12 and that includes dozens of trips to LV and several years of going back and forth to LA. Also never owned or wore sandals. I won’t get into the Brooklyn dumbo reasoning behind it…

or sleeping with the fish I guess lol. I don’t do sandals either, ever. the way rest of league kicks his ass, he’d turn into Mark Portugal if giants signed him, Reds do have some other good players tho, good looking team.
They are rated tops in league for overall D 2017 according to F/G and their IF is outstanding.
OF D is very good too (and CF is excellent) and that Schleber guy in RF robbed Posey in
extras deep RCF, and Posey was dropping f-bombs on way back to dugout.

Baggs did say regular season in a follow-up tweet. Funny how Kat mentioned Davenport in the Thursday thread, and now there’s this little bit of trivia. Also, Giants’ first and last ABs were home runs, imagine that.

  6. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on May 13, 2017 at 8:32 am

I wonder if the Giants can, would, or should do something to keep the seagulls away during games. I really do believe that Span might have missed that ball because of them.

Why not just put up a big sign that says “SEAGULLS PROHIBITED DURING GAMES”
    Problem solved.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 13, 2017 at 8:35 am

Maybe in another city they could get away with fitting the seagulls with concrete shoes but not in SF.

I am being completely serious. I don’t think it’s far fetched at all.
The team is in dire straits and needs to do something quick…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 13, 2017 at 9:10 am

weather in City is just so different, esp at night. south bay it’s 70s in daytime and UPS driver wears shorts year round, lot of school kids too. Votto has put I think 3 on the warning track to LF and of course that one Panik smashed off the wall Thursday would have been out in a lot of yards too.

I just can’t believe ALL the Giants reg hitters except Posey (and his 8 ribbies or whatev) are hitting so poorly for either avg/ power or both. Always liked Gameface too and he’s been terrible at the plate like all the bench guys pressed into action. I’d get Mac Hwang and Slater up right now give team a fresher look.

  7. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 13, 2017 at 8:40 am

Reds blew up their entire team not long after Giants playoff when they fell to bottom. Props to them it’s paid off, after dumping the SPs, losing Chapman, trading off Phillips and Frazier yada yada.

I’d be remiss not to mention that after the blowup over Bassman Baldy accusing Flav of making up a tweet or some such, he was not banned here but left of his own accord. Only been fortunate enough to have met the Big Guy a couple times but he’s a very laid back and tolerant guy and obviously devoted single Dad as witness by this weekend and countless others. And of course responsible for keeping together Fantastic Flap.

Speaking of Scorpioms…listened to a lot of them back late 70s and early 80s. Bad ass rock/metal band…

Lurie just had an interview of the Reds beat writer. The guy said the day they traded for Duvall, the Reds front office told him they were happy as hell, thought sure he had the goods to be a left fielder. And, he’s turned out to be pretty good defensively, getting better all the time. WTF? So the Reds management can see a LFer, when Giants have been looking for a power hitting LF since Bonds left? No wonder no home grown OFers in two decades…

I don’t know what you all think of Lurie’ s show but I generally enjoy it despite the wing nuts that call in. He had a great segment with an author that recently wrote a book on Lefty Oduol and his impact on SF baseball. Good stuff. I’m glad the club won last night, great bullpen performance, but struggling to put away the Reds is indicative of everything wrong with the club.

  18. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on May 13, 2017 at 11:25 am

As annoying as Evans’ words the other day were, I agree with one part, all the Giants’ ‘big guns’ are hitting way below their baseball cards and you have to figure that improves at some point. Even with last night’s heroics, Posey still doesn’t have 10 RBI’s. 6 homers, 6 solo shots.

There’s a scene where the guys drive through the college area and the Daniel Stern character leans out of the car window and calls out to some college women: “Hey, what’s your major?!”
It’s funny, and it’s poignant. The locals and the college kids, sharing the town, but in different worlds.

I don’t give a fuck (if they hit) if they scratch out at least three runs, and most importantly, they win.

Chi, this team can’t hit. You’re not going to win many like this one without the Core Four…

I think they are being intentionally secretive about Bumgarner’s status for the rest of the season.
Unless I missed something, I think they should have some idea by now…

I went back and googled recovery prognosis. All of the latest updates (late April) was that he would need at least two months. Hasn’t been a month yet, so not sure we should expect to hear anything yet.

But it will be nice to get an update. I know many (I believe including you, Loo) think he’s done for the year (hope you guys are done) I still think he’ll be back this year.

Loo, I cheated, but it’s Montreal Expos Baseball.

As an utterly bizarre add-on, but Joe mentioning not knowing about the Brewers logo happened to me about 2 weeks ago when I came across an article about a contest the Brewers held in the late 70’s to pick a new logo. A local art student came up with the glove logo and the rest is history. I always thought the logo was stupid because it just looks like a glove, but I see it in a whole new light now. It’s so cool that as of a week ago I now own one of their caps.

I found this link about hidden meanings in logos and it’s pretty interesting. I had no idea about the Falcons crest:

I used to call them the Montreal Elbows because of that logo.

According to the Giant’s website, Bum may start playing catch at the end of this month. Melancon is due to start playing catch any time now.

Keith Hernandez played in the ’80s, when the players wore incredibly tight uniforms. Yeah, that was such a more manly look.

I’m OK with the pink unis this weekend. It’s a good cause, and the sport needs to get beyond its fuddy-duddy image sometimes.

Yes, the days of the double-knit unis. For the most part, an era best left in the past.

He didn’t say anything about the manliness of it.
      That’s your interpretation.

Bum was reported to have a grade 2 shoulder separation. No surgery usually with a grade 1 and 2. But, there’s a good amount of damage. The shoulder joint and capsule will be loosened. They’ll do rehab of course, but hey, any shoulder injury with ligament damage can’t be a good thing for a pitcher. If you’re a linebacker, whatever. But throwing a baseball is another deal altogether…

    From : https://www.cedars-sinai.edu/Patients/Programs-and-Services/Orthopaedic-Center/Clinical-Programs/Sports-Medicine/Acromioclavicular-AC-Joint-Separation.aspx

“There can be varying amount of damage in the process of an AC joint separation, these injuries are given ratings. There a total of six grades. The most common are:

Grade 1 AC joint separation is a slight displacement of the joint. The AC ligament may be badly stretched or partly torn.
Grade 2 AC joint separation involves a partial dislocation of the joint. This may not be easy to see. The AC ligament is completely torn. The nearby coracoclavicular ligaments are not, however.
Grade 3 AC joint separation is a complete separation of the joint, which is clear to see. Both sets of ligaments are torn as well as the capsule that surrounds the joint. Because there’s no support to the joint left, the shoulder falls with the weight of the arm. The shoulder blade is pushed up making a bump on the shoulder.

Surgery to Treat Acromioclavicular Joint Separation
Anyone who has a Grade 4 through 6 separation and some people with Grade 3 separations mostly likely will need surgery. Surgery is also an option if conservative medical care doesn’t bring significant improvement.

Several techniques for treating an AC joint separation with surgery exist. Most of them involve reconstructing the ligaments. Pins or plates may be used to improve stability.”

As a Sports med Physical Therapist i applaud snarkk. Great work on the definitions. Giants medical staff doesn’t exactly have a great history getting guys right but.. A grade 2 usually heals. The coracoid ligaments are intact, and the blood supply to the AC when it is stable is pretty good. Just llke a moderate ankle sprain can heal and take the repeated stress an NBA player puts on it ala Steph Curry. No guarantees. The biggest issue is guys coming back too early and messing it up again. Well we never see the Giants make a bad call in that regard right????

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 13, 2017 at 10:42 pm

IF he really has a 2, he’s damn lucky. That’s a $125+ million shoulder, and no surgery. Any cutting on it due to a dirt bike episode would be beyond ridiculous…
