The Streak is Dead
I’d love to know what finally prompted Baer to fess up about the sellout streak. I can picture him looking out at the vast emptiness of undisturbed seats, seeing only James and his contingent lounging across an entire section. He sighed deeply and quietly said to himself “it is time.” And up to the KNBR box he went.
Here is a picture James took about an hour before Baer made his disclosure:

Span, Nunie, Pence and The Donger combined to go 0 for 15 last night. They tried their honkiest to out-honky Matt Moore but they were to be denied. Has that lollypop he threw to first base even come down yet? Moore is King Honky and his rule is as long as it is stupid.
Mike Clevinger goes tonight. Feels like he might no hit us. Why not? We have to sprinkle a no hitter or two in there if we’re going to go full-honky on this miserable season……
Wait. What? We haven’t ALREADY gone full honky?
Saw yesterday on one of the “rumors” sites (yeah, when you team sucks this bad, you read shit like that and wait for the deadline to see if your team can make any moves to improve the club) there was a piece that the Giants are the team most interested in G. Stanton if the fish decide to deal him. I just see no way that could get done with the Giants having the bare cupboards that they do)…
Chi, actually I referenced the trade idea last week and why it makes sense. It makes sense because the Giants are going to be one of the few teams who could afford his contract. People have suggested the Marlins paying part of that deal, which is fine, but paying the full boat allows the Giants probably not to have top notch prospects to throw into a deal. I said Blach and Arroyo as our two center pieces probably is doable…
I would prefer a piece other than Arroyo, but if that is what it takes, giddy-up.
Same here but to get Stanton and only to give up two main pieces and probably 3-4 lesser pieces..I am all in. Arroyo gives them a local kid and we keep Beede…
This is pure marketing drivel designed to keep $$ flowing. He knows they suck, aren’t getting better soon and there are lot of empty seats and cheapos available.
So he uses this to announce regrettably the sell out streaks ends, thanks fans profusely yada yada. And forces K and K in on it, neither of whom looked too thrilled to see him
. Meanwhile Bochy and others sound apologetic to “best fans” who come to “best yard” and Baer says let’s start another one!
Not another winning streak, mind you, which seems like light years ago.
Wonder what James guess was on actual attendance, in the seats.
Flav mentioned this, how funky that the showcase SPs sucked. Nunez was hurt and according to Flem didn’t run out the GIDP very hard, threw a ball away and had an 0 fer. Prado is hurt and on the DL, so opp is there for a team needing 3b.
Just read on Rumors about Yanks and Alonso cheaper option but a rental. So if Belt wants out of Buster’s Honkytown time to rake on the homestand and show what he’s capable of in the park that would be total opposite of bandbox Yanks stadium.
Remember Madlock? I think his worst season ever was time he spent at Stick in ’79. Next thing you know he’s got a ring with Pops and the Pirates.
Giants suck.
There, that’s outta the way for today …
Announcing the end of the sell out streak had to be tough for Baer. Someone, Loo I think, mentioned the tight angles on the broadcast that avoid showing the crowd and I have noticed that for a while too. Oh, well…it can’t be all honky town and unicorns all the time.
Honky Town and Unicorns…LMAO…
Time to que up “Honky Tonk Man”movie 🎥 a very underrated Clint Eastwood film…
I remember when they used to report actual butts in seats at the Stick. I think the lowest number i ever saw was 986. It was like watching a game in the Grand Canyon.
mid week night games in Johnny Rabb/Guy Sularz days ’80s. yeow. they weren’t very good and it was freezing…and balmy half hour away.
Unc is right about announcing it too. when I first started going in early ’60s the PA guy with deep voice used to cite the attendance sometime In middle innings followed by “And we thank you.” He used to sing the anthem before the game too, Jeff Carter I think his name was.
And I do remember him introducing Pirates star as “Bob Clemente.”
I don’t think he left on good note either, something suspicious.
I remember that time…yes there was one game (might have been a freezing-ass cold night game against the Expos)…I was NOT there, but remember the number.
Yeah, there were a ton of 1,500 to 3,000 games back in the bad old days.
You know I hate the Dodgers like most of us, but I did like that PA announcer’s deep voice from the 60 thru 70’and beyond.Dude had class, just can’t remember his name.
Shit. That’s what the games are now. I asked before but no one seemed to have an answer. At what point is every player on the team playing under their normal production levels, and seemingly just going thru the motions, it time to talk about firing the manager?
I’m not advocating it, but in years past that was always a viable option. The phrase was ” you can’t fire the whole team”. It is too late this year, and Bochy deserves better. In the off season is it time ” to go in another direction”???
Same question/comment I had on the last thread. I definitely think they need to take a hard look at the scouting department, because their has not been jack-shit in the talent pipeline for a long time. And Evans and Sabean need to be held accountable. Bochy, too. Not sure how deep the change needs to be, but it may be time for drastic changes.
Ah, how the mighty have fallen, which when you look at the team you have to wonder WTF just happened?? I can’t remember a Giants team free falling like this. It is hard to say who stays and who goes cause most of these Guys were here for the 3 WS. It is not like they got old all of a sudden. Can’t wait to see what happens!!
A few are probably untouchable. At least Craw…he has a full no-trade clause, and you know he has no desire to go anywhere else…
Maybe you guys have been speculating since the first month on how to improve this POS team- -and so have I. I still can’t comeup with a realistic scenario. Think anyone is going to spring via a high prospect for Gorkys? Who is decent that we could give up? Span? Pence? Then our OF goes from bad to horrible and I don’t think we would get a “can’t miss” with them. Maybe Belt to the Yankees. It seems obscene to talk of trading Bum or Posey, but what else to they have? Shark, Moore, etc. are all fifth starters at best.
WillieD, I’d say, 29,873. Just because any number >30,000 sounds so much better.
Any starter not named Cain could go. The best being Bummie given his paltry deal right now. He throws in a couple more good starts leading to the deadline would only solidify his stature and get us some talent. Panik is about the only position player that is tradable.
Moore has enough of a track record to maybe get a couple mid-rage AA guys. Smarj as well. Blach looks pretty good, but why trade him? He’s cheap and here.
Do you see them trading Bummie, OSF? Not very likely. Everybody else either sucks or is on a deal that would force the brass to eat a ton of salary. Not our style. Nunie would get maybe a middling single A prospect. Belt would get something if it were not for his new deal. Span, Pence, and the entire pen is strong enough to garner at best another mid-range AA guy.
I would say Nunie and Belt have some trade value. And we do have a few minor league pieces, most of which I would prefer not to trade.
Greetings from Pacifica. Taking my dad and son to the game tonight. Got what I thought was a pretty good deal on Stubhub yesterday morning. Field Club Section 123 Row M (behind Giants dugout) for $65 a piece. Just checked and saw field club seats in section 119, just to the left of home plate for $32. That’s Houston Astros back to back 100 plus losses cheap.
I’ve got some family in Pacifica too, wilcojoe. My uncle was a longtime bartender at Nick’s. Enjoy the “game”.
Nice. We almost went to Nick’s last night for dinner but decided to just do take out instead.
Enjoy Wilco!
“most of these Guys were here for the 3 WS.”
That’s not correct anymore. Off the top of my head, I’m counting only 8 left.
We can count Cueto as an 9th guy with championship experience, with the Royals.
Chuck, if it wasn’t depressing enough listen to this. I just finished USAToday and they had a big article about the potential trades. The ONLY time the Giants were named was in an off-hand comment about they might be in play for Stanton (which would be a TOTAL disaster). Rest of article was about different players switching teams. They never mentioned ANY Giant going to a contender. Wonder why? Sure, Bum could bring in a prospect or two, but then we would have zero stars.
Here’s my take- -we keep the defense and HR that Belt can provided and trade Posey! How’s that? His power is about gone and he needs to get away from catching. Send him to the AL where he can catch and DH 50/50 and last forever. Should get several prospects.
To top off the bad news, the back page of USA Today had half page devoted to how good the Dodgers are now and forever into the future. Sigh.
Posey, Bum and Crawford are not going anywhere. Everyone knows this.
Very good chance it’s mostly the same crew here next year…
exactly. Maybe Nunie gets moved for something nominal. Most of the core guys have no trade clauses. Anyone think Pence or Crawford wants to move somewhere? No way would they agree to it. Belt has a partial no trade, not sure who he could block.
Loo and Flav nailed it. Don’t expect wholesale changes next year.
The Dodgers are 28-4 in their last 32 games. That’s pretty insane.
James, what was the general mood of the crowd? Jovial? Disinterested? What was the cell phone usage like?
JD Martinez headed to AZ. Let’s see what type of haul he brought Det.
A pickup we should of made, figures cause Booby/Sabes can’t ever pull a trade.
so two guys who are ranked, one unranked in a weak D-back farm system.
Ahhh, missed your post.
So, that would be like Arroyo, Shaw and some other random dude?
no, Arroyo and Shaw are 2 of our best prospects. They traded their #4/#15 and a random dude.
More like a Donger and a Ryder
Beede (84) and Arroyo (92) are the only top 100 guys for the Gigantes (this is per Baseball America’s) analysis.
D-Backs get J D. Martinez from Tigers.
Isn’t Shaw the logical replacement for Belt if he got traded? They are grooming him in LF, but logically 1b is his natural position? Seems to me Belt is one of the few decent trade chips they have that could return a good OF prospect. You’d have to sell the trading party on how much his power is wasted at ATT. Giants desperately need OF depth. His deal isn’t cheap, but who is these days? I’m not advocating they trade him, but for a top OF prospect and pen arm I’d probably do it…
Cueto and Belt for the Yanks top OF prospects and some other chips from them elsewhere in a 3 teamer…
But I have no or should say little faith in Sabes Evans…
I say they should talk Posey into an AL trade. He’s the best catcher in the NL but is getting too old for everyday catching. Only he and Belt have any decent trade value. Belt is far better defensively. Posey could DH in the AL forever (he’ll end up there anyway).
These field club seats are incredible. Up close and personal with all the Giants. Got my sons pick with Murph. Larry Baer walked right by us.
what’s the crowd look like? Maybe too early to tell
Ask Baer that since the sellout charade is over, when do the half price beer nights kick in…
As bad as the near term is…we ain’t the A’s….
http://www.sfchronicle.com/athletics/article/A-s-fans-aren-t-buying-promise-of-a-rebuild-112951
Probably too late, but to respond to BF . . . the crowd was its usual self, maybe a little more subdued. Good natured and annoying. There was a large Indian family in front of us who were probably not offended by Chief Wahoo and who were also not rooting for the Indians. They did not understand the sitting in your seat protocol, the kids and adults alike. Another couple next to us were mildly interested in my exclamations about the end of the streak. There were no shitty Journey songs — another streak ended?
No Journey song in the middle of the 8th inning? That’s hard to believe.
Trust me, I notice these things.
now that’s good news
Nunez hustled that one out. Good to go…somewhere.
J D Martinez is a rental tho, which would affect prospects going other way.
I would guess the Giants are the worst or near worst team in MLB in scoring in the first inning. It would be nice once in a while…
Giants seem to do this so often lately—2 out rocket for a double by Panik. Get more guys on base that hit scores someone.
Gorks is up, gets the intentional BB followed by Blach.
Clevinger is 100% country honky.
He doesn’t have a massive beard only because he can’t grow one.
Probably just under 30k in attendance tonight. There are probably 29 other clubs that would kill to draw this well when their team is this shitty.
Truth. Hey Wilco, if you get a good pic of you and your son at the game send it to me.
bigflavor77@gmail
Do we enable this management / ownership by coming to games when the team and org is this bad?…
A lot of long suffering Knick fans believe that, Snarkk…
Belt’s only about 3 seconds behind these high fastballs. Jesus.
Well, the casual fans aren’t going to disappear overnight.
Jesus, Nooner. WTF????
Sorry, but Nunie is often an idiot base runner. Miller ripping him for not even looking at Nevin waiving him in…
Belt can’t hit a fastball to save his life and Pence couldn’t hit the side of a barn with a fucking fungo bat.
Nunie and Moore, picked up nearly at the same time last year, might be the 2 dumbest players we’ve got on the team.
Miller on radio call in total disbelief that Nunez stopped at 3rd.
Maybe he thought there was 3 outs..
It’s like the Giants’ baseball IQ is decaying right in front of us.
They need to DL Pence. His ABs are giving me a fucking headache.
RIght, Zumie. Between the keystone kops Moore throw and the fielding of the bunt yesterday to the losing track of the outs or whatever the fuck Nooner thought, these guys look fat drunk and lazy.
Blow this thing up. Blame the players, sure. But, these are signs that Bochy and crew have lost this team..,
That was a great catch for Pence on the bench, but does Kruk&Kuip have to go full ejuculation over it?They have to keep throwing him a crumb no matter how bad he is..
Hey Wilco, any idea WTF Nunie was doing there stopping at third with 2 down on a knock?…
I missed it. I was grabbing an Irish coffee.
That’s OK. Better use of your time, anyway…
On Pence, WTF has happened? The guy isn’t 39. Didn’t miss a game for 2 years. Paleo diet. Workout freak. Then he meets that chick, blows his hammy, and phttttttt…
another case of the contract year I think. Picked up a ring after he came here, one good season and boom long term deal. Giants way, overpay/overvalue to keep your own.
Aubrey Huff redux . . .
Nowhere near as bad as Huff who did nothing after 2010. Pence contributed big to 2 titles.
There was a time when his deal looked like a bargain…
Pence has turned into freaking Rowand now!!
Just throw sinkers&sliders away and bingo automatic slow roller to 3rd..
Every pitcher on every club should pitch him like that, and most are for sure now..
Yanks- White Sox deal goes through–they get Frazier and Robertson plus another pen guy for Clippard and prospects.
They have no use for any of our motley crue now…
If the Giants brass has the balls to swing a deal, I still like Cueto and top prospect (Arrroyo?) and a mid level starting prospect for one of the Afros young OFers. I still like Fisher. Wilco – what do you think it takes to land Fisher?
Not sure anybody would gamble on Cueto at all now – even if the price was cheap…
I like JD Martinez and wanted him bad, but two top prospects and other lower prospects seems high. D-backs thinking they can make a run at it this year? Obviously they do…
No time like the present. Like they all say, you take your shot when you have the opportunity.
Jesus, Belt.
Leading the league in NPOs.
Once I might’ve looked at the data to see whether or not that’s accurate. Not in game 95 of 2017.
🙂
Yankees really helped themselves with Robertson. With Chapman, Betances already filling the 8th and 9th innings, they will be hard to beat with a lead going into the 7th inning.
I hate the YankMees damned near as much as I hate the bums. And they’re Jr Circuit to boot…
If Bums face them in WS, I root for the Yankees. No question about that for me.
Oh, me too, Blade. No doubt.
Weak shit…
Teams in contention already buying.
Giants dicking around with sellout statistics…
Emphasis on “dicking around.” Ownership needs to shake shit up this offseason. I still say a hard look at the scouting is warranted. The pipeline (what pipeline???) has been dry for years.
Aaaaaaaannnnnnnnd fail. Fuck it.
If it’s Yank and Dogs, I treat it just like the A’s and Dogs of yesteryear. Ignore , , ,
I just figured out why we should still go to these games.
Every game you get to see HOF starters for the opposition…
8 player haul (7 prospects) by White Sox in last week, giving up Quintana, Frazier, Kahnale, and Robertson . . .
Want a template Giants? Look no further than Chicago.
Yep. They have two, prospects in the top 10…
The difference is our guys are mostly untradeable…
Not true IMO. Belt, Bum, Posey, Panik, Craw, Cueto, Smarg, Melancon, and Moore are trade chips.
Do they have the guts to trade any of them? Especially the core 4 – yep, that’s doubtful.
Yep, absolutely. Blow this sleepwalking shit up. They can do it, just takes the will to do it. It’s not like they don’t have any revenue to smooth over some coverage of some of the salaries they offload…
Yep. I have no sentimental regrets about this crew. Been that way since Horace traded Willie Mays for the proverbial 12 pieces of gold.
Not quite…

Proverbial being the key qualifier word.
Game Face getting something started…come on and win this fucker..I’m ready to hit the rack.
Small zone, but the ump can’t help but call a half dozen outside pitches strikes against lefties.
Victory!
Nunie!
Wth the walk off knock!
Now, trade his ass…
That’s exactly what I was talking about! G’night girls.
Nunie’s trade value just doubled. He’s worth TWO bags of balls now…
Lulz…
Dyson is found money. One good thing for the FO.
Melancon who?…
The downside is that any success he has will only encourage more dumpster diving…
awesome! they beat the closer. Don’t hurt Nunez!
good pitching tonite all around.
guess we gotta get Wilco out here little more often.
Blade, the only chips we have that will get us anything other than mid-level AAers are Bummie and Panik.
Posey, Belt, Smarj, Melancon, and even Cueto will require the brass to eat large amounts of contract for prospects.
We don’t do that.
The rest are varying flavors of shit. Nooner might get us a decent AAA guy.
I guess we’re the Baskin-Robbins of shit…

Disagree. Frazier, of the White Sox is 31, hitting .207 with 16 homers and 44 RBIs in his second season with the White Sox. A two-time All-Star while with the Cincinnati Reds, Frazier had 40 homers and 98 RBIs while hitting a career-low .225 for Chicago in 2016.
Yankees right-handed reliever Tyler Clippard, whose contract — he is in the second year of a two-year, $12.25 million deal — helps offset some of the money being taken in on Frazier’s and Robertson’s deals.
In short, where there’s a will, there’s a way. By the by, the Sox are in last place too. I don’t buy what you’re saying. However, I do agree – that’s the Giants way, so very unlikely anything happens beyond a shit deal involving Nunie.
Agree, Blade. It is all dependent on the teams involved in the trade discussion, what the teams’ needs are, and how pronounced the needs are.
Case in point, Houston needs at least one starter. Dealing with them (using Cueto as the centerpiece of discussions) probably has the possibility of returning more than a prospective deal with another club.
“A night after their sellout streak ended at an NL-record 530 games, the Giants once again fell short of a capacity crowd with an attendance of 39,151.”
Only Joe knows for sure.
I don’t understand why the fans should give a crap whether there are sellouts or near sellouts. The Giants PR machine is putting this crap out there as if people still attending in large numbers matters more than the team is historically bad. It’s a deflection device, a distraction maneuver, like the Drumpf spin machine issues every day to deflect attention away from the daily gaffes, incompetence and kleptocracy…
Great analogy using the trumpster and their spin doctors…
Frazier isn’t doing any better than Belt this year as Blade pointed out. Plus he’s a rental.
Toss in a Gearrin or one of the O-somethings, Giants could have maybe got even more out of Yanks deep farm.
2 of the guys they did give up are young OFs.
Makes you wonder how right Loo could be, that most everyone of regs is back in fold.
Good example.
Good for Dyson. Meanwhile, across Bay Casilla starting 9th with 1 run lead vs. visiting Rays gets out first 2 batters Longoria and Morrison.
Then gives up single, wild pitch, steal of 3b, a walk and 2 rbi singles vs. bottom of the order. Rays take lead and win.
