Weaklings
I get it, AT&T Park is not a home run hitters park. But we are particularly weak in our own park. We’ve hit 25 measly bombs in a place we are supposed to know better than anyone else. The next lowest home HR total is 40 for the Pirates.
And 25 bombs wouldn’t be the end of the world if our opposition was also having trouble with power. But other teams are not having the same problems we are with knocking the ball out of the park. Our opponents have 39 dongs, 14 more than us. It’s entirely possible that we get doubled up, in our own place, by the end of the season.
That is embarrassing and unacceptable.
Is it that hard to find a pull-hitting outfielder? Leftie or rightie?
I guess so. Didn’t JT fricking Snow have 20 HRs here? He’s no roided up power guy, but really. Same with Ellis Burks. These guys weren’t super spectacular players but they managed to put up good numbers here.
Lost in another desultory loss was this scene:
http://m.mlb.com/cutfour/2017/07/21/243476530/a-giants-fan-with-a-duane-kuiper-jersey-lost-a-foul-ball-but-then-duane-kuiper-himself-came-and-gave-him-one
Pretty funny…
And I pin this loss on Nunie getting caught stealing 3rd for no fucking reason.
As Loo noted, you pull one it doesn’t take a lot. Maybe Shaw could do some of that.
Span, btw is quietly having a season like Giants expected—.289 with .340/450/ .794 OPS. He had 40 hits in June.
That OPS btw is 60 points more than Panik and Nunez, and 150 more than Crawford and Pence.
Leadoff? No. CF? no probably better suited for LF.
But no one outside SD thought he would be hitting this well/so much better than others.
Span has durability issues. He’s missed 25 games this season so far.
Time to sell high.
Padres, to the Giants, “Ownage is ownage.”
The thing killing this team in lack of quality minor leaguers that could help. The only guy that looked like he could be a player is Slater, and he’s done for the year. Supposedly there is quality in low minors, which is worth exactly nothing. The FO has gone AWOL in stocking the minor league system…
I mentioned Chris Shaw yesterday who is at Sac. He was drafted as a 1st baseman, but has been used more in LF of late. Here are his numbers, again (Sac, only – he also has played 37 games at Richmond with comparable numbers):
48 G, 186 PA, .296, .332, .522, .853. 9 HR, 13 2B, 26 RBI, 55 Ks, 11 BB (could be more selective and lower the K rate, but overall, not bad numbers). But, the point being, you are right, there is not a lot of help in the minors.
Do understand that anything in the minors (regardless of being drafted by SF or acquired via trade) is no guarantee of quality MLB play down the road. Yes, you need a solid farm, but not sure that is what is “killing this team” right now. What is killing this team right now is that most of our current roster sucks, or are having really bad years. Where the lack of quality minor leaguers is killing us, IMO, is that we have limited viable trade pieces to use in acquiring the ML pieces we need. This again goes back to my comments on the scouts. WTF is their goddamned problem. Fire all their sorry asses!
Nunie’s fuckup was the key. When he got thrown-out I knew they were fucked, and it was going to be another loss. I fucking bailed after the 7th…pathetic.
Loved xoot’s post from last night about his son, the Panda hat, etc. Great post.
And there was mention of trading Bum and Posey (and Belt) by Blade and Loo. I absolutely would do a trade IF the Giants got the right pieces in return (the suggested trade with Atlanta is a good example of a trade that I think is plausable).
But, we all know that shit is NOT happening. No way Booby and Crew have the balls to move Bum or Posey.
mrsportdude – had a great post too, about taking chances, and cleaning house to rebuild. I agree that it is probably time to consider this, but given what we have heard, there will NOT be wholesale changes in the off-season. They’re going to dink-and-dunk and make a few moves, but by and large next year’s version of our Giants will NOT look measurably different than this year’s squad.
Fire the fucking scouts and find some folks who can evaluate talent! And it may be time for Booby to go, too.
This team is no different than a stinking pile of dog shit. Correction. With a pile of dog shit I can easily scoop it up and be done with it. This team? Houston, we have problems, and there is not an easy fix…
They still have the pitching scout guru Dick Tidrow?
It’s time for that dude to retire.
The Giants are in desperate need of an infusion of fresh blood. Scouting, front office maybe even manager. Everything seems worn out and tired.
Maybe they need that bitch owner from “Major League” with a pin up of her in her bikini 👙 the team strips off a piece after a win!
Unfortunately that only worked in that movie, not with this team..
I liked Loo’s Atl trade proposal of Bum, Posey and Belt for Freeman, Teheran and a top prospect. If you could somehow finagle two prospects in addition to Freeman and Teheran, you would have me jumping in the streets. I actually think Sabean would be licking his chops at the thought of that trade but no way in hell would Baer allow them to move the two faces of the franchise.
I actually think Atlanta would make that move.
it’s just too much. Teheran isn’t even very good. Maybe Belt and Posey for that trio but not Bum, too.
I don’t know. Teheran isn’t chopped-liver, either, and he is only 26.
He is lifetime 54-47 with a 3.54/1.186 line.
If the trade was for Atlanta’s TOP prospect, or two quality prospects, I do that trade in a fucking heartbeat.
But, as Wilco points out, no way Baer lets the two principle faces of the franchise go…fucking dumbass…
BTW – Bum is a year older (almost 28) and his lifetime numbers are only slightly better than Teheran’s….
I think if you got two of the top 50 prospects in the country in addition to Freeman and Teheran, I think you have to strongly consider that. The salary relief in dumping Posey and Belt can’t be understated.
You are preaching to the choir, Wilco. I am with you on this one, brother. Two top prospects with Freeman and Teheran…I could not pull the trigger on that trade quick enough. As you said, I would be dancing in the fucking streets…
Kat – Yeah, they still have Tidrow. He and Booby were Sabes right-hand guys for like 100 years prior to Booby getting moved to GM.
Here’s the link to the Giant’s organization (baseball ops, etc.):
http://mlb.mlb.com/team/front_office.jsp?c_id=sf
Tidrow is still Sr. VP of Player Personnel and Senior Advisor to Booby
John Barr is VP and Assistant GM, Scouting and International Operations (this needs a HARD LOOK), IMO. This is the guy who, again, IMO, is the primary guy responsible for the talent pipeline….WHAT talent pipeline???
“Mr. Barr, is it true that you suffer from a debilitating case of sibonaphobia–i.e., fear of Cubans?”
Ha…no shit, Mike. All the more reason to kick Barr’s ass to the curb…
The outfield situation this season has been horrendous. We know that. The FO owns that, and they’ve known for years that with a bare cupboard in the minors, outfield depth has been a major deficit. FO malfeasance on this issue…
Yeah the OF is totally on the front office. I can cut them a little slack with the pen as they had hopes that the guys like oshit okrap and clockwork Orange were going to progress as pitchers.
They didnt
The part of him that’s visible looks pretty solid!
the River Cats next home stand starts Wednesday. The Sacramento temperature is forecast to climb to 104 degrees by the end of that stand. I hope he’s in reasonable shape.
Hola everybody. I got nothing, this team is playing so awesome. But I was able to score a nice ticket for 6$ on Stub hub. It’s Friday night, why not have some beer and watch some terribly played baseball
I would be very up for that…
Come on down Loo! I think if you leave now, you could make it by first pitch
Yep…if he fires up the Lear Jet right now, he may even make batting practice. 😉
$6 ticket with some $10 beers…giddy-up! Bring us a W, Sarge!
I’ll just take a decently played game.
Chi, I believe exactly one year ago at this moment you and Blade were pulling into the Bronx…
You are correct, sir. Some great memories. Highlight of the trip? Meeting the infamous DJ Loo (aka Draculoo)…
Lifetime memories of a bucket list trip. Wrigley is next…you should meet me in Chitown next year, Loo. Now that would be some fun!
Tonight’s SF Weakling lineup:
1. Denard Span (L) CF
2. Eduardo Nunez (R) 3B
3. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
4. Buster Posey (R) C
5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
6. Hunter Pence (R) RF
7. Joe Panik (L) 2B
8. Gorkys Hernandez (R) LF
9. Jeff Samardzija (R) P
Except for Smrdzj you could turn it upside down and no one would even blink…
I liked the old SF logo better – back when it didn’t have all the pointy shit…
Me, too. I have one of those lids. Old school, baby!
They have got to do something! Fans are realizing that this is a POS team and will not likely get better next year either. No more sell-outs on demand. Belt or Posey–one has to go. Bum, Cueto- -let ’em go.
What good memories that guy Loo has pictured gave us. I remember his first game. Me in my 20’s at my parent’s house listening on a RADIO!! I think he had a no-hitter until the 7th inning. hH was great from the get-go.
OSF: Dalrymple broke up the no hitter with 2 outs in the 8th…

Another plus about Tehran is that his record would probably be better if he didn’t have the “anchor” weight of carrying the lowly Braves around his neck.
Anywho, the Giants grand plan will be window dressing and moving the deck chairs, e.g., trade the wondrous, all knowing Nunie in preparation for fat ass’s arrival; and move Strickland, so Posey’s peace and serenity isn’t affected.
agree with Loo, what you can see in that pic of him in the airport looks pretty good. Come on back big boy! Some of us will welcome you with open arms!
“Time to sell high.” Hey no problem…put a few of them on waivers and see what response you get.
But the epic fail of Evans is inability to upgrade the OF beyond the likes of Gorkys, esp for CF. Drew Stubbs and Ruggiano are you f-ing kidding?
Loo mentioned triples alley too and that’s something else weird about this year. Craw and Belt both had double digit triples last year. I think Craw has 1. And Nunez has just as many as Hundley–0. That blows me away, the only speed guy on a team with humungo OF, and no triples in 4 months.
Off topic – Willie or anyone else know why Kyrie doesn’t want to ball with Lebron anymore?
no but he thinks the earth is flat so he’s a pretty weird dude
I paraphrase, but basically he said he didn’t want to play in the shadow of LBJ.
Pabilto couldn’t do any worse than his predecessors. And I don;t think Bochy had anything to do with this. This was a front office move.
Pablo reportedly can’t even field the position worth a dang. And, in his entire tenure with RSox, he never scored from 2nd on a single…
in fairness to Pablo, how often was he ever standing on second base? Hey now!
Flav is riding that Pablo bus, hard!
steward column for mercurynews.com skewered this deal pretty hard. Even Schulman, quoted in Jenkins’ column today said, “I’ve never seen so much antipathy.”
They’re replaying the Kuiper move for the guy who flubbed the foul ball with Amy. Actually is pretty funny, and he does get the guy a ball and shakes his hand.
Marketing, killing them with kindness…even the clueless.
Cahill picks Nunez up. No called 3rd strikes for Belt tonite! line drive in the scorebook.
“Even Schulman, quoted in Jenkins’ column today said, “I’ve never seen so much antipathy.”
Pablo said he’d miss two things about the Giants, and neither one of them were the fans.
So he can bite us.
If he does return, I’m pretty sure 90% of the crowd will give him a standing ovation – even if it’s only to have something to cheer about…
I disagree about that happening. I’d be astounded if as many as 50% did that.
The X-factor would be if Baer gets him to do a press conference to make nice to the fans. That would help.
Dunno, these are the fans that never boo. Half the fan base thinks Belt is worse than useless, but you get no sense of it at ATT.
It would be interesting to see the fan reaction on that first AB.
I’m sure no one gives a damn what he did or didn’t say.
They’ll happily welcome back a fat reminder of a time that they’ll probably never see again…
Maybe. But he’s getting roasted on the radio call-in shows.
The other way to look at the home HR totals is to note that SF pitchers have given up 70 HRs on the road. The league average HRs given up on the road is 55. Just as much of the 14 HR disparity is the fault of a pitching staff that never quite gets shit on as much as they deserve to be.
Smarge . . . . makes you wonder just how the Catfish Hunter types did it.
Clever of Hector Sanchez to have a tic-tac-toe board tattooed on the left side of his neck.
Probably comes in handy on long flights…
He might as well paint his balls like a Rubik’s Cube…
Fucking LOL…
Hector was an untalented Pablo at the plate for SF.
The Braves are roughing up Alex Wood. Nice to see.
Krukow said Whiteside was a very good catcher. That’s LOL funny. The guy sucked offensively and defensively. His saving grace must have been that Bochy liked him.
yeah he was flat out terrible behind plate. I can remember Miller just being incredulous that the prez used to have pitches that were called strikes bounce off his glove and roll to backstop. 2011 without Posey was rough.
Hector was apparently quite a multi-lingual talent, though, per Kuip . . .
The Braves pitcher hit a grand slam vs. the Dodgers. That’s some awesome stuff.
It would be if we weren’t 73 games out…
Point taken. 🙂
Nothing wrong with enjoying it, Zum.
Awesomeness is wherever you find it I guess…
I thought it was 173 games…ah fuck it, who’s counting at this point…
arrggh. fricking Pads bats continue to make noise.
as Kuip mentioned the pads are dead last in BA in the NL at .232 and also dead last in runs scored.
so what I’m wondering is their BA vs. Giants pitching staff this season?
Their OPS against SF is a mere 773 — middle of the pack among SF opponents — but way above their overall numbers. Just in case it’s not obvious to the masses, allowing a 773 OPS is not very good.
Nice derp play there.
Wow. Can’t get Hector out. That’s just….wow.
Fuck me as usual. Turn on the game, oh look! 6-2.
Smarj is cruising! Cue insta-fuckthis.
Fuck, this team is hard to watch sometimes…like tonight!
They scored 6 runs for Smarj and he couldn’t get the win.
Wow. 3 pitchers, as of now, to get through the 5th inning.
Braves now ahead 12-1. Cool.
Gearrin will bore the Padres into submission.
I know most of you dislike and do not trust this stuff, but here are some indisputable numbers:
Dodgers: 492 Runs, 314 Runs Allowed
Giants: 375 Runs, 484 Runs Allowed
A Giants offense with Dodger pitching would be well above 500
A Dodgers offense with Giants pitching would be at 500
The numbers are pretty stark…
Yer right!
Loo – you are right. It was a year ago that Blade and I rolled into the Bronx. Good times and great memories, brother.
Wrigley is next. You should join me in Chitown, Loo. Now that would be fun!
Sure was, Chi.
Where did that year go?
I wonder if Blade imagined then that he’d be a dad now…
I doubt it, but the cool thing is that he and Linh were talking and getting to know one another during our trip.
This soul-sucking bullpen.
Yet they have been much better than the starters, that group that was supposed to be the core of one of the elite staffs in the league.
When they show the aerial view of ATT, you really get an idea of how insane the dimensions are…
People don’t change but they do gain perspective as they age, as their circumstances change. I bet Pablo would come back quite contrite and humble. And the fans would welcome him. ATT fans are pretty forgiving and who doesn’t like a story about a guy coming home with his tail between his legs looking to re-start his life?
plus, he was directed related and responsible for 2 WS. He will always have my support for that.
He was also pretty much their entire offense when they turned things around in 2009…
I’ve been watching this game for an hour and a half and they e played 1.5 innings
I don’t even think you’re exaggerating…
Almost 5 hours ago . . . Woke up; posted something; exercised; showered; Giants up 4-0; took a Saigon Grab car to breakfast; ate breakfast; chatting with a friend at Starbucks; and Giants Padres tied at 6 in 7th. That figures. Ha.
A year ago you were sleeping in the Bronx…
I’ve posted photos of that trip on Facebook recently. Good times, despite the Giants losing during the entire trip out there.
Fuck!
I am delayed a bit…just saw the Frias go ahead HR. Pfffttt
I prefer this type of nostalgia.
very nice great hat too.
Plus that was beautiful one with Marichal.
thx Loo
It was 5-1 when I went in with Mrs. snarkk for some Pad Thai and lemon grass beef at the Thai place. After that and a Singha, I come out to the car radio to 6-5. Now they’re down one. This team just finds a way to F up just about every game — every which way, but win…
The players perform as if in contempt of their trade value…
Fuck this SHIT. I’m out girls. Would rather read the Elon Musk biography than watch this hot mess.
Rock fucking bottom.
I assume BF won’t mind tonight . . . .
well with 16 freaking hits the Pads are batting .400 tonite, with like 8 XBHs beside. Dang it they treat SF pitching like it’s Double A or something.
James thx for stats above…773 OPS has gotta be way out of line vs. what they do against everyone else.
Pads rolled in from getting swept by Rox, come in here and cuff around Giants…
Last night in the City. At a little dive bar called the Owl Tree near the Tenderloin. They don’t even have the Giants game on and you know what, I am okay with that.
Kruk may secretly want this POS squad to lose 101 at least. Takes him off the hook for being on the worst Giants team ever. I don’t remember if Kuiper was on that team…
I looked it up. It was his final season. He went 3-5 (.600) in 8 games and was released on 6/28/85…
Well, if we’re going rock bottom, we’re gonna head bang our way there.
There may be more Flappers still watching than there are fans at the game.
Mac, there a a lot of games left. We are nowhere near rock bottom. Love me some Michael Schenker . . .
This squad constantly finds new “rock bottom”.
Per BF, “embarrassing and unacceptable”.
Well, for this ownership, maybe embarrassing. After the trade deadline, we’ll know how “unacceptable” this is…
Nooner walking to 1st on the ground ball. Trade. Value . . . . Dissipating . . .
What’s the deal with that, anyway? He’ll steal a base, but not run out a grounder. WTF?…
Gameface! Dude does NOT suck! what a f-ing rocket
YEEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last gasp Gillaspie ! They’ve pulled out of the new “rock bottom”!! …
I knew it! Don’t stop buhleevin’
whaddayaknow?
They’d better get it now
Thanks to Laz Diaz for not ringing up Crawford on that barely outside fastball.
If Belt had one more foot on that drive to the freaking 399 foot sign, Giants might have had a walkoff.
