Finally A Series to Watch
Kruk said we are 6-4 against the Art Dealer’s this year? Could that be? Win or lose tonight, these are the types of series that are the only interesting ones left on the schedule. So even if we get blown out 10-0 tonight, at least we get to see the colors of orange, black and blue jostling back and forth on the screen. In a lost season, I’ll take that.
I didn’t fact check MrSprtdude’s claim at the end of the last thread, but is it possible that every hitter we have except Nunie has a lower batting average than they had in 2016? If true, that’s incredible.
fact check: That claim isn’t true. Buster, for instance, is hitting 40 points higher than he did last year. I’m not checking anymore.
Nunez BA is up but OPS almost exactly the same .744 to .752. 0 triples all year dunno how that is.
Span has raised OPS from .712 to .789 with increased slugging.
Posey has too from .796 to .911, both OB and slugging up 50 points ish.
Still, the others Pence Craw Belt off 60 points or more.
Interesting pitching match ups without Opie or Bum.
How could that be? Posey’s at top 10 hitter..
yes, good point. Posey’s BA is significantly higher. Mr. Sprtsdude was drunk-posting last night.
What happened to Posey’s adjustment at the plate to get more power?
Re-adjusted?…
Melancon in yesterday’s thread. Where is the dude? Is he scheduled for a rehab anytime soon?
This has all the Giants markings of him coming back after a rehab and getting hurt again, and then he ends up having TJ surgery or some such. So he’s out half of next season because they waited. I hope not, but that’s what this smells like to me…
the Giants continue to have no idea what to do with players who are hurting. They listening to what the player says more than what the doctor must be saying. Otherwise, these guys would be getting over there injuries and getting back on track. Melancon, Pence, Cueto….it’s always the same shit where they try to play through stuff and then never get it right.
Melancon is long tossing these days…..
Melancon CAN pitch through it, and always could. The issue is the day after he throws, pain is there and isn’t mitigated.
I think the goal is to get him right going forward. I also think he could be dealt off if he is OK but you can’t do anything until he reaches that point. Bringing him back now to save ballgames, with Giants record, doesn’t seem very smart. I’m OK with letting this play out and not blaming Giants who couldn’t have seen it coming or medicos for any of it.
I wouldn’t call what he was doing “pitching thru it”. Kruk, among others, have said he’s not finishing his pitches. And the results speak for themselves. He was “Casilla-esqu this year. Dyson been much better
Dyson’s revival only reinforces their scrap heap approach to acquiring players…
The only blame is if this happened:
1. He was hurt before he signed and the SF medicos missed it; or
2. Surgery is a distinct possibility now, but they put it off until the last available moment, due to his or team decision. And, result of wait is lost service time into next year.
They knew about The gravel in Cains elbow for a long time. Yet, due to team fear or whatever, or Cain refusal, he had the clean out AFTER they signed him to the disastrous deal. And, in middle of the season, no less. He was never the same after that surgery. Obviously for the team, they should have had the clean out done before signing the long term deal…
I remember a couple of games early in the season where Melancon’s control seemed preternaturally good; then, suddenly, it wasn’t.
Beede out for remainder of season with a groin injury. No word on whether it was work related
Can’t he pitch thru it?
The Dodgers hitters are killing mediocre and bad pitching right now. The Giants pitchers better all bring their A-games, even though some of the Giants pitchers don’t have A-games.
That has been the Dodgers MO through all their recent playoff runs. they kill the shitty teams and fold in the playoffs.
I know he’s not a good OF, but I wouldn’t go by some crazy stat that I don’t understand and I doubt your average non-geek does…
Ouch.
His defense in CF is horrific. I could make it to third form first on his arm, it’s so bad. They should pay as much of his Contract as it takes to dump him. If he’s in the 25 next season, that is a bad thing, period. He’s the shining example of what happens when the minor’s cupboard is bare of outfielders…
What about Smarj and Strickland?
Strick goes if he PO’d Boch enough on that stupid, selfish Harper incident. And, he may very well have done …
Are the Cubbies fishing for the shark?
Hopefully the chum is worthwhile…
Yeah, beyond the dumb fight, Morse is still out on his concussion protocol. Not that Morse is going to help the team, but he’s is pretty fucked up from banging in to Samarj.
Yeah, I never thought I’d miss Pagan and Blanco so much.
Outside of an unconscious 2010 postseason, Matt Cain has had a very mediocre career. Even before going 19-38 since 2012 (11-28 since 2013), he was at best a solid 2nd or 3rd starter/innings eater. I’m tired of the poor run support excuse. I don’t think LA scored much for Koufax, Drysdale and Osteen or the Cards for Gibson…
Fun fact:
For reasons I can’t fathom, Gary Lavelle started 3 games for the Giants in September of 1981.
The remainder of his 742 appearances were in relief…
God’s will?…
nice to see Pence focused up on the game tonight.
The guy is a mess, his baseball skills are AWOL. I think that wifey of his has turned him inside out and upside down. He’s tweeting and videoing and jacking around making oiled french press coffee — it’s all meaningless fluff. Meanwhile, only 6 jacks in 307 ABs so far, and of the 16 NL right fielders with 200+ ABs, he’s 15th in OPS at .634…
Donger just got called back up
batting 6th. Kinda feels like a “Donger Friday” doesn’t it? Bomb time.
This is awesome, dj.
Is there a plan for Donger? Has there ever been one? Or did they just want some Kimchee on the post game spread? I see no rhyme nor reason as to his presence in this organization and the way he’s been handled…
Nunie gets the start for the Red Sox tonight. The magic of trades: he’s now on a strong playoff contender.
Belt scratched due to a sore wrist. You can cross him off the “sellers” list.
you could have crossed him off the list because of no buyers.
True
I wonder what the top secret internal player evaluation summaries look like, if there are such things on Sabes hard drive. Not visible to Evans.
Gorkys:
Good dude, good clubhouse guy, he’s here only because we fucked up for 20 years with no system OFers. Trade value: a bag o balls.
Melancon: keereist, we’re eating a shit sandwich on this one. Trade value: waiting on the latest MRI.
Add your own…
Kurt Suzuki just hit his 11th bomb of the year. That would be tied for second on our team. A 33 year old non descript catcher.
Melancon pitched 3 times within a week late June before the DL stint and was fine.
He faced 11 batters got 9 of them out allowing 1 hit 1 BB 0 runs.
So obviously, he was good enough to get ML hitters out right before the pain returned that is causing him to miss time…if he can recover and be pain free he can be an asset to the pen or marketable.
Quite unlike Casilla, as the A’s have found out.
How was he before that stint?…
Melancon wasn’t giving 60 mil to be “good enough to get ML hitters out”. He was paid to be a lock down closer. He WAS a lock down closer for two full seasons before this nightmare. It’s ASTOUNDING that he fell so far off the map so quickly. Fucking nearly immediately.
getting hitters out is what his job is as a lockdown closer, and it’s exactly what he did to 9 of last 11 hitters he faced over his last 3 appearances. dunno what else you expect him to do but he did fine before going on the DL. He could still pitch and get people out, it’s not a question.
. Long way from falling off the map like Casilla did giving up multiple bombs in Toronto.
We disagree on whether this guy is done/how far he’s fallen so I won’t say anymore.
9 of his last 11 hitters? ok we are done here. The season is 6 fucking months long.
I think the Giants, like all ML teams, scrutinize their pitchers intensely. SPs have off day schedules and I bet they are monitored and reported on to the mgr. on daily basis by pitching coach/pen coach/ and pen C.
This is not left to chance given the money invested. And I’m sure there are reg updates on which pen guys are available and how many pitches or innings they are capable of on a daily basis.
as for med staff there is no way all these multi million dollar arms are being left to interns fresh out of golds gym.
This is likely the reason so many guys go on the DL or on rehab starts etc in the first place because trained med staff and mgmt. deem it the best possible solution.
And as the book I read by J Passan points out, there is no team in baseball that has a good idea how to prevent (or in some cases treat) the rash of injuries that occur to ml and minor league pitchers.
IMO if/when Melancon is back, he’s the 8th inning guy. Dyson looks like the closer…
Melancon is the closer if he comes back and he’s healthy. Dyson could be a found 8th inning guy. Moore is Less right now……
Dyson looks more like the closer to me than Melancon did, even when Melancon didn’t have the arm issues — at least we didn’t know he had them. Dyson is more dominant, has better stuff. Apparently Rags has rid him of most of his head case problems. The guy has nasty sinkers…
Dyson isn’t someone you’d wanna put your money on unless it’s a lost season like this is. In a real season there’s no way I’d bet on him. But no pressure is a strong influence. It ruined Casilla. Dyson is fine right now, we have no one else and if he fucks up it really doesn’t matter.
He’s been nails in the past for Rangers.
Change of scenery can do wonders for the gray matter…
I’d take a flyer and trade Panik for prospects. Or even just one top AA prospect OFer.
This Gomez kid looks like a comer. And, I mean Gomez…
Can’t blame Melancon for taking what the Giants were stupid enough to give him…
Dodger organist playing “Norwegian Wood”.
I wonder how many in the crowd get it…
No one under the age of 50.
In my top 3 Beatles songs.
Let it Be is another.
Not sure of the last one…
So we’re trying to win with Gorkys, Hundley, and the Donger in the lineup.
That’s…..something.
Sad to say, snarkkmutt the avatar dog, is slowing down.
At 10 1/2, he’s having more trouble negotiating stairs.
Looks like some arthritis in the hips. He’ll still get after the squirrels a little, but, not for too long.
He’s got benign fat tumors on his body.
He gets winded pretty quickly.
Still, he’ll gladly eat as much as you put in front of him…
Pets are family, definitely.
Yes, and a lot less annoying…
He’s always glad to see me. There’s value in that…
I hope he can hang in there for you, Snarkk…
Thanks, dudes.
I was getting a little down, he’s been challenged lately.
I’m hoping for a little rebound. Like the Giants…
Hundley disappoints consistently
Hundley really sucks.
There’s hope for a few more good years, Snarkk. Jozie made it to almost 15. She had a few scares where she slowed way down, but came back pretty strong for a couple more years. Same thing. Arthritis and tumors all over her.
Jesus. Hwang has good instincts at least . Moore is glerming things up again.
A gift run to the Dodgers because the Dodgers’ offense needs gift runs.
Jebus.
Still think it was funny that the crowd was still cheering the score for 30 seconds after the bunt went foul.
Moore seems to have a penchant for self destruction.
Calling Dr. Melfi…
When Melancon comes back next year, he is the closer. Why? 20 million reasons…they cant trade him if he is a $20 mill set up guy..
Span just blows dick. Hairy fucking horse dick.
Hairy Horsefluffer?…
The Giants don’t have a single impact hitter. Someone that strikes fear into a pitcher.
Hwang dang doodle?
Hwang dang single and RBI ! …
Yes!!
Hundley occasionally hits doubles. Thank the lard
Nice base running from hwang
Suck it, Joc!
Ha! The bottom of the getting crazy.
Gorkys with the booming double and RBI ? WTF?
Bochy’s going to want to lock him up with a 3-year deal…
Not sure why Moore wasn’t pinch-hit for.
Bochy is lately into letting starters get into trouble, then letting Kontos kome in to give up the inherited runners…
Oh, Moore’s only at 85 pitches. That does make it a tougher call.
Uh get the pen going. Mr. Walker is about to . . .
Moore’s lack of control is insanity-inducing.
Gorks is sewing up his starting job in the 2018 outfield…
It’s like watching Jonathan Sanchez pitch.
Christ I’d pull him now.
Or NOW.
Bochy loves him some Kontos.
A Flapper said it well. Kontos has no out pitch.
Like fucking clockwork
Snarkk called the scenario exactly. Kontos’ work for the night is done.
2 seasons of watching a crap bullpen seems like a really long time.
Oshit!
HP ump screwed him. He had him struck out……
Bullpen blues
I listened to Jason Isbell’s southeastern again. Nice clever rhymes with multisyllabic drug names, but very light compared to say Steve Earle
Still think it is pure gold…the two records after including the new one don’t reach the grandness if southeastern…
Southeastern is pure gold…
Good God. This pen is absolutely dog balls. Is there anyone that isn’t pure unadulterated shit?
Where’s that fucking lefty reliever?
Jeeeeeeeebus! This’ll be a 5 pitch inning.
That looked like a routine fly ball to me off the bat.
Everything is a home run now…
when your bullpen sucks balls you’ll really pay some dues
when your bullpen sucks balls you’ll really pay some dues
please rip up my contract, I’ve got the bullpen blues
We got a miracle inning from the bottom of our batting order and we’re still going to lose.
The Dodgers have a real MLB bullpen.
Dodgers’ back-up catcher has a .400 OBP.
Drifted off…why again does Bochy keep Moore to start the 7th???
Because he had the awesome Kontos ready to come in to save the day if Moore got in trouble, because Kontos is just that awesome.
All year of this mess
Melania probably wishes she could, too.
“Anthony Scaramucci and his wife are reportedly calling it quits. The White House communication director’s wife has filed for divorce just days after Scaramucci took on his new role in President Trump’s administration, according to the New York Post.”
Missed the bottom of the 7th, but I see the Kont-Oshit combo struck again.
If I can predict exactly what is going to happen with bringing Moore back after he had an obviously difficult inning, with Kontos warming up ready to let runners in, and it goes down exactly as I predicted, then WTF is Bochy doing? There was no earthly reason why he had to bring Moore back in with a 4-2 lead; no reason he could not have pinch hit for him to try to pad the lead. He’s a manager with 20+ seasons of experience, and 20 seasons of ball as a player before that. That is why I scratch my head that Bochy basically is skating through this putrid season without catching barely any fault for it. He’s managing like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day…
Plus the ‘pen was somewhat fresh after an off day yesterday.
