A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Finally A Series to Watch

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 28, 2017

Kruk said we are 6-4 against the Art Dealer’s this year? Could that be? Win or lose tonight, these are the types of series that are the only interesting ones left on the schedule. So even if we get blown out 10-0 tonight, at least we get to see the colors of orange, black and blue jostling back and forth on the screen. In a lost season, I’ll take that.

I didn’t fact check MrSprtdude’s claim at the end of the last thread, but is it possible that every hitter we have except Nunie has a lower batting average than they had in 2016? If true, that’s incredible.

fact check: That claim isn’t true. Buster, for instance, is hitting 40 points higher than he did last year. I’m not checking anymore.

Nunez BA is up but OPS almost exactly the same .744 to .752. 0 triples all year dunno how that is.
Span has raised OPS from .712 to .789 with increased slugging.
Posey has too from .796 to .911, both OB and slugging up 50 points ish.

Still, the others Pence Craw Belt off 60 points or more.

Interesting pitching match ups without Opie or Bum.

How could that be? Posey’s at top 10 hitter..

yes, good point. Posey’s BA is significantly higher. Mr. Sprtsdude was drunk-posting last night.

Melancon in yesterday’s thread. Where is the dude? Is he scheduled for a rehab anytime soon?
This has all the Giants markings of him coming back after a rehab and getting hurt again, and then he ends up having TJ surgery or some such. So he’s out half of next season because they waited. I hope not, but that’s what this smells like to me…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 28, 2017 at 8:24 am

the Giants continue to have no idea what to do with players who are hurting. They listening to what the player says more than what the doctor must be saying. Otherwise, these guys would be getting over there injuries and getting back on track. Melancon, Pence, Cueto….it’s always the same shit where they try to play through stuff and then never get it right.
Melancon is long tossing these days…..

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 28, 2017 at 8:39 am

Melancon CAN pitch through it, and always could. The issue is the day after he throws, pain is there and isn’t mitigated.
I think the goal is to get him right going forward. I also think he could be dealt off if he is OK but you can’t do anything until he reaches that point. Bringing him back now to save ballgames, with Giants record, doesn’t seem very smart. I’m OK with letting this play out and not blaming Giants who couldn’t have seen it coming or medicos for any of it.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 28, 2017 at 9:02 am

I wouldn’t call what he was doing “pitching thru it”. Kruk, among others, have said he’s not finishing his pitches. And the results speak for themselves. He was “Casilla-esqu this year. Dyson been much better

Dyson’s revival only reinforces their scrap heap approach to acquiring players…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 28, 2017 at 2:03 pm

The only blame is if this happened:
        1. He was hurt before he signed and the SF medicos missed it; or
        2. Surgery is a distinct possibility now, but they put it off until the last available moment, due to his or team decision. And, result of wait is lost service time into next year.

They knew about The gravel in Cains elbow for a long time. Yet, due to team fear or whatever, or Cain refusal, he had the clean out AFTER they signed him to the disastrous deal. And, in middle of the season, no less. He was never the same after that surgery. Obviously for the team, they should have had the clean out done before signing the long term deal…

  22. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 28, 2017 at 6:18 pm

Melancon pitched 3 times within a week late June before the DL stint and was fine.
He faced 11 batters got 9 of them out allowing 1 hit 1 BB 0 runs.
So obviously, he was good enough to get ML hitters out right before the pain returned that is causing him to miss time…if he can recover and be pain free he can be an asset to the pen or marketable.
Quite unlike Casilla, as the A’s have found out.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 28, 2017 at 6:30 pm

How was he before that stint?…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 28, 2017 at 6:54 pm

Melancon wasn’t giving 60 mil to be “good enough to get ML hitters out”. He was paid to be a lock down closer. He WAS a lock down closer for two full seasons before this nightmare. It’s ASTOUNDING that he fell so far off the map so quickly. Fucking nearly immediately.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 28, 2017 at 7:09 pm

getting hitters out is what his job is as a lockdown closer, and it’s exactly what he did to 9 of last 11 hitters he faced over his last 3 appearances. dunno what else you expect him to do but he did fine before going on the DL. He could still pitch and get people out, it’s not a question.
. Long way from falling off the map like Casilla did giving up multiple bombs in Toronto.
We disagree on whether this guy is done/how far he’s fallen so I won’t say anymore.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 28, 2017 at 7:20 pm

9 of his last 11 hitters? ok we are done here. The season is 6 fucking months long.

  23. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 28, 2017 at 6:58 pm

I think the Giants, like all ML teams, scrutinize their pitchers intensely. SPs have off day schedules and I bet they are monitored and reported on to the mgr. on daily basis by pitching coach/pen coach/ and pen C.
This is not left to chance given the money invested. And I’m sure there are reg updates on which pen guys are available and how many pitches or innings they are capable of on a daily basis.

as for med staff there is no way all these multi million dollar arms are being left to interns fresh out of golds gym.
This is likely the reason so many guys go on the DL or on rehab starts etc in the first place because trained med staff and mgmt. deem it the best possible solution.

And as the book I read by J Passan points out, there is no team in baseball that has a good idea how to prevent (or in some cases treat) the rash of injuries that occur to ml and minor league pitchers.

Dyson looks more like the closer to me than Melancon did, even when Melancon didn’t have the arm issues — at least we didn’t know he had them. Dyson is more dominant, has better stuff. Apparently Rags has rid him of most of his head case problems. The guy has nasty sinkers…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 28, 2017 at 7:37 pm

Dyson isn’t someone you’d wanna put your money on unless it’s a lost season like this is. In a real season there’s no way I’d bet on him. But no pressure is a strong influence. It ruined Casilla. Dyson is fine right now, we have no one else and if he fucks up it really doesn’t matter.

Drifted off…why again does Bochy keep Moore to start the 7th???

Because he had the awesome Kontos ready to come in to save the day if Moore got in trouble, because Kontos is just that awesome.

Melania probably wishes she could, too.
“Anthony Scaramucci and his wife are reportedly calling it quits. The White House communication director’s wife has filed for divorce just days after Scaramucci took on his new role in President Trump’s administration, according to the New York Post.”

Missed the bottom of the 7th, but I see the Kont-Oshit combo struck again.

If I can predict exactly what is going to happen with bringing Moore back after he had an obviously difficult inning, with Kontos warming up ready to let runners in, and it goes down exactly as I predicted, then WTF is Bochy doing? There was no earthly reason why he had to bring Moore back in with a 4-2 lead; no reason he could not have pinch hit for him to try to pad the lead. He’s a manager with 20+ seasons of experience, and 20 seasons of ball as a player before that. That is why I scratch my head that Bochy basically is skating through this putrid season without catching barely any fault for it. He’s managing like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day…
