A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Conflicted

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 25, 2018

First Smargerine, then MadBum, then Curry and now….I’m forced to root for Duke’s dumbass. Ugh. I did two pay brackets and I’m top 4 in both. Of the remaining entries with a chance, I’m the only one who picked Duke to win it all (in both of them). Duke is only a rung below USC, Notre Dame and Penn State on my list of “College Programs I Love to Hate”. And you can probably take out the “Love to”. I’m probably better off if they just lose today.

I’m over all the hand wringing about losing our 2 pitchers. The season isn’t over. We just have to change the way we win games. It’s time for these guys to hit like men. LIKE MEN. Manly Men. They couldn’t have done that last year and I have doubts about them doing it this year. But they’re going up there with wood in their hands. Wield it, goddammit.

Like a man…..

so if they don’t need the 5th SP for couple weeks does that mean 12 man staff? If so that should mean 5 OFs plus 2 of Rutledge/ Specs/Sandoval (ugh) Hundley and the 8 starting position players.
Giants A’s today. I usually catch some of this Series as prelude to real thing, at least in real yards.

Aretha is 76 today. Those 60s Atlantic LPs, esp Lady Soul, I really enjoyed even for the non hits. That was Muscle Shoals rhythm section with the horns. Great stuff.

Watched D-1 HS championship last night. Scottie Pippen Jr, is really good, a point with nice shot who knocked down critical FTs in front of pops sitting courtside. Kenyon Martin Jr. also really good and long and lean and under control, unlike the old man. He and Pippen exchanging high fives with phones out to capture moment as Sierra Canyon won over Sheldon of Sac.

end of b-ball season banquet last night talked to Dad who grew up in Kansas and is die hard. I asked about the C and he said he’s OK physically just not a shot blocker. But he can defend and rebound so Bagley shouldn’t have all slam dunk lobs like vs. Cuse and their zone.
Too bad this matchup is now; would have made for great Finals. props for calling Duke Flav, one of few favorites still left standing. Self loses this one it would add to disturbing pattern of untimely exits; win and he’s a hero at least for a week.

Yes believe it are not, their was once upon a time when the “SF Giants had a “YOUNG” and exciting amount of outfielders!!!
Well yes it was in the 1970’s so here we go..
    Bobby Bonds
    Jack Clark
    George Foster
    Ken Henderson
    Dave Kingman
    Gary Maddox
    Gary Matthews
Honorable Mention.. Chili Davis to start the 80’s
Still say to this day, the most exciting fastest outfield I witnessed in baseball was the one year Matthews in LF,Maddox in CF,Bonds in RF those 3 were “STUDS” tracking down potential doubles, triples in the alleys with their glovework and deadly arms as well..

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 25, 2018 at 11:11 am

I’m with you on all those guys except this Ken Henderson dude. Just looking at his stats, I’m not seeing why he gets remembered on a list including all those other dudes…
He did get traded a lot, I guess he was a hot commodity back then

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on March 25, 2018 at 11:19 am

Kat, I get you on all that. It was short lived with Bonds, Matthews and Maddox – Bobby got traded after ’74 for friggin’ Murcer. Dumbass trade by Stoneham.
BF – Kenny Henderson was just a solid player. Not great in any one thing, but solid. The kind of OFer I’ll take right now in Duggar if he can do that. I don’t see Duggar as some kind of savior, he’s a legit glove, he’s still developing the bat. Kenny was a line drive guy, occasional HR power, which is what Duggar looks like. I want him to succeed as just a “finally” kind of appreciation of a home grown OFer after 30 years since they last developed Chili…

Not all that dumb starting Blach vs Kershaw.
Better chance with Cueto in game 2.
Though I recall Blach throwin a dandy against the Doghairs something like 8 innings before giving up a hit.As they say that’s why they play the games, on any given day miracles can come true..

Fuck it, I’m not giving up on a season that hasn’t even started yet. Bum has proven to be a fast healer and the Giants’ offense should be vastly improved this year. There’s enough talent in the rotation to hold down the fort until he gets back. Screw the Dodgers and the rest of the NL West, GO GIANTS!

Some opening day info from Eric Stephen:

“Blach, 27, has pitched parts of the two seasons in the majors with the Giants. The left-hander has a 2.23 ERA against the Dodgers in 36⅓ innings, including eight shutout innings in a win over Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers in the penultimate game of the 2016 regular season as the Giants were inching toward a wild card berth.
Blach’s ERA against everyone else is 4.99, in 144⅓ innings.
Kershaw has a 1.60 career ERA against the Giants in 41 games, including 40 starts, with 307 strikeouts and 44 walks in 297⅓ innings.”

Gorks and blanco…not a whole lot of difference except Blanco has had some success here in past. Whomever makes final cut is only there as late game D replacement in LF for Pence.
If Pence (or the team itself) craters Mac or Shaw would come up I’d guess to take that spot.

the new wacky a’s ($1 seats no one wants, joking that they’d charge Giants more to park today, etc.) are more interesting than the Wolff era trust-busting a’s, but I don’t see why the antics would attract many fans. Maybe mlb and the union have a side deal with them that requires monthly reports on their new-park progress and their fan-cultivation efforts.

While it does seem like this year’s team *should* score more runs, the pitching situation (as others here have bemoaned as well) has got to be bugging Sabes. He basically built the 3 championships on pitching. Obviously a team can’t control injuries, but this pitching roster will surely test Sabean’s mettle to keep this team afloat in the early going. Unless he’s already written this year off as another Brad Penny year….
