A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Losing in San Diego

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 15, 2018

Any loss is disappointing but there were encouraging signs. Both Longo and McCutchen homered. I am not worried about Longo being unproductive this year. It takes time to adjust to a new league. His contract sucks and the Giants will be eating a lot of the back end of that deal but he will be productive this year.

A win would be nice today although not expected. Beede (who sucks) will have his hands full facing off against one of the Padres better pitching prospects. Will Belt continue to sit vs these lefties? The Giants are near last in the league in walks this year, they aren’t going to improve on that number with Belt sitting out…..

It’s time to rid ourselves of Pence and bring Mac Williamson up from AAA. I am tired of watching Pence waving helplessly at pitches out of the strike zone. Trading him for a player to be named later works for me.

We all want Williamson up he’s knocking the cover off the ball. But theirs 18 mil reasons this organization and especially the investors are not gonna part ways with Pence (sadly) and theirs not a team in baseball that will take him unless the Giants pay all of his contract.
So you can hope for a Pence injury for a Williamson callup are a Blanco,Gorky,Jackson demotion which is unlikely also..meh

Giants next 2 opponents, on road, are couple of baseball’s hottest teams. DBax are 11-3 after stomping LA again last night and Angels are13-3 and have won 7 in a row.

38 bombs hit last night, including 7 in Seattle btw. M’s and A’s, despite 2 rainouts. AZ hit 4 last night, so I don’t think dodgers would tell you humidor making much difference.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 15, 2018 at 9:32 am

oops that game was in LA. See if Giants hitters feel any difference hitting in AZ, a place that used to be friendly.
Sucks Bochy had to use so many pitchers out of pen last night with Beede going today. Unless he can be more accurate and use fewer pitches Giants will need as many guys ready as possible out there.

Maybe Mrs Beede makes this game now for whatever inspiration he can get. She’s in Arizona doing some dumb western lathering up some cowboy’s face like Jennifer Montana use to do🤠

Beede is now beyond the Kruk “amped up” excuse for first MLB start, which was OK, but wild.
Today, the hype needs to show something, some control, some command.
Giants really need this one, they are headed into a buzzsaw with the Dbacks and Angels back to back.
The way they are hitting, they’ll be fortunate to win one game at each venue…

I probably shouldn’t say Beede sucks. He’s obviously got talent.

Here is Nack’s obituary of Secretariat.
Great writing. Have a coffee while you read it. Long, but worth it.

I can’t claim to be a fan of horse racing, but I used to read Nack when he was with SI. I had a subscription for about 30 years. I devoured that magazine every week, cover to cover. He and other great writers stuffed it with crystal content when SI was the place to go to read about sports. They were great writers, not just great sports writers. Rick Reilly (before he turned into a shadow of himself trying to convert to TV), Ron Fimrite, Dan Jenkins, Curry Kirkpatick, Rick Telander, Paul Zimmerman, and others, including Frank Deford, the greatest sportswriter of modern times.

I remember watching live on TV, probably ABC with Jim McKay, that Belmont that Nack describes. Secretariat was a phenomenon then. Those were the days of 3 TV networks, no cell phones, no internet. The horse was all over the media for months, a demigod. Nack captures it. I do remember that even without a whit of knowledge of horse racing, I realized as Secretariat came down the stretch winning by seemingly a mile, that something transcendent was happening.

Halfway through this article you’ll see that great track level photo of Secretariat steaming down the stretch at the Derby, with Turcotte up, but mostly hidden by the great horse’s head. The crowd is in unfocused, background color adding their lay witness testimony to the holy event. The photo is by Neil Leifer, hands down the greatest ever sports photographer. Perfectly framed, the legendary horse is alone in his magnificence, with all fours above ground. He’s flying …

Once again, Rotundo Reyes Moronta’s moment on the mound is the high point of the game for Giants fans. It’s not going to be easy to finish April at .500.

I switched over to look at the LAA v KC game last night and thought something was wrong with the video. But no. That was actual snow swirling around in the air. Everyone knew April would be tough, especially with the injuries to the pitchers. The pitching staff may well sort itself out once the injured have returned and the lousy performers can be sent down or reassigned (starting with any reliever whose last name begins with O). But scoring 0 or 1 run in more than half your games played obviously isn’t going to cut it, nor likely will this offense *sort itself out* without some changes. Williamson up and Pence to the Bench would be a bitter pill for management to swallow, can they do it? Remarkably, the Giants actually won some of those games scoring only 1 run, or the W-L tally would be looking pretty dismal.
