Road Cookin’
Baggs had some incredible and depressing stats in his Athletic article today. We scored 3 runs at Coors. The previous low we’ve scored in a 3 game series there was 7. He also noted that, somehow, every Giants starter has a better OPS at home v the road. Think about that. They all hit better at AT&T than anywhere else. Except Longo, he’s got a higher road OPS. But he still isn’t swinging a bat so he’s not worth even discussing right now…
I’m deep in golf mode. If you want to find me I’m either playing Big Meadow or Glaze Meadow every day for the next week….
Wow. Interesting split. That sucked to get swept, but in recent years, Coors Field has been an absolute house of horrors. All things considered, I am not sweating it.
Our npbiys are two over .500 and only 3.5 back with 74 left to play. With all the damned injuries, To be where they are, i’ll Take that, and we get Cueto back today.
Let’s see them put that home OPS kit to work and kick some red bird ass.
Xoot, $65-75/ oz.
wow. That’s about 15% of the going rate here.
This state is swimming in it and we can’t legally export it. You have “ask” for it, though. Expect same in California when things get humming.
Cards threw their kid sensation Mikolas last night vs. AZ and won with big rally vs. AZ pen. Guy they are throwing tonite L Weaver has ERA over 5.00, vs. Cueto. Obviously more roster moves coming.
Giants still have great record at home 26-14. They’ve played 9 fewer games at home than LA and have just as many Ws. 10 game homestand—4 with STL 3 with Cubs 3 with A’s before AS break.
I don’t know that I’ve thought of Mikolas as a kid. He’s spent the last few years in Japan, which is why folks haven’t heard of him. He’s not one of those like Weaver or Reyes or Wacha or the like that they’ve developed through the system. Mikolas will turn 30 at the end of August.
Weaver….I don’t know what’s going on with Weaver. Tends to have blowups somewhere in the game. Might get through the first couple of innings OK but that’s not a tell for later success.
.
thanks great story on Mikolas, completely unaware.
Like to see Cutch give them boost and pick it back up again July. June he hit .300 with .550 slugging .890 OPS.
He does hit better at home too, .804 OPS vs. .742. Still I was hoping for more like .859 of last year.
However, 10 for his last 43 with 1 bomb and 3 rbis. Other than that one big game last week, 1 for July.
Um, this is contract year! Having a season like 2 years ago ain’t gonna cut it.
J Bart is up in Oregon playing for Salem-Keizer, where he slammed 2 bombs in his first game Wed night. Years ago company had a mgmt. conference up there where one of owners has a hotel and we rode Willamette ferry boat up and down river.
Would you trade Bart straight up for degrom?
I would not.
mm no but Wilmer Flores looks like decent hitter for Mets and would be great back up or replacement guy for IF. Mets I’m sure want lot for de Grom.
Dunno anything about Oregon geography-how far away is S-K from where you are? Kid who played b-ball in Asian leagues for me in middle school years was a running back/kick returner for Willamette.
Could be worse. At least they’ve been winning at home. There have been times when that was not so, such as the first 8 games ever played at PhonePark.
Hey guys! Always enjoy peeking in over here and with the Cards heading to your neck of the woods it seemed a good time. Hopefully we’ll see a good series–well, at least you will. These late night starts get to me…..
Nice to see you here, Daniel. Always great to get your perspective on the Redbirds when they match-up with the Giants.
Bobby Evans was on MLB Network today via phone interview. Nothing of note in the interview, other than Evans saying the Giants don’t want to go over the lux tax line, but we already knew that.
Giants Just mystify me!
Awhile back they sweep the Braves, then they go to Miami and get sweeped, they go to Arizona sweep their asses, then get swept by Rockies wtf, no consistency at all to put a streak together..
That’s what a .500 team does…
Welcome back Daniel! I think you’re gonna be happy tonight, Weaver gonna shut us down.
I understand that feeling. The Cardinals tend to have that happen to them as well. Feels like these two teams are a lot alike!
first game out of Coors is usually tough for hitters and it will be no different tonight. VMI for the Giants is -24.71. Weaver gonna shut us down tonight.
If this VMI stuff is so key going to and from Coors, why don’t the Rox dominate everybody there?…
they have to go to and from it, too. You’ll recall I said it was a pretty even playing field before game 1 and that’s how game 1 played out till near the end when the Rox did enough to win. I haven’t looked at their record when they are already on a homestand and they get to play a team coming in. Would be interesting to see the long term stats on that.
So, if the Rox come off a roadie, they have to adjust from heavy to light air, where the oppo has to adjust from heavy to light? ..
Meaning the Rox have the advantage to VMI the longer they get into their homestand since they have time to adjust …
they have to adjust just like the road team if they’re coming off a long roadie. And it depends on where they’re coming from.
VMI doesn’t explain everything, it doesn’t explain why they got shut out in Game 3, they should have been adjusted by then. But it is a reliable guide. I’ve seen it work for 3 years now.
Every once in awhile I have to adjust from a heavy beer 🍺 to a light one..
I gotta hit the course Snarkk, I’ll catch up with your comments on this when I get back
Suarez shut them down til the bomb, which was crushed but barely fair. Giants got 2 on and Craw hit one pretty hard but not far enough. Suarez has ERA down to 3.92. Hope he holds up, come long ways. Suarez held Arenado hitless too in 3 ABs, no mean feat for any SF pitcher; plus Arenado kills LHP.
Cars have similar record than Giants so far but luckily Giants division has been up and down too and they are only 3.5 out. Dodgers right on DBax heels.
Guess I’d ask Daniel if Cards were to add to the team (since Giants are apparently tapped out at the window) what area would he like them to fortify–offense starters or pen?
DeJong is due back right away and Fowler (read your blog column very insightful on tough situation for all) too from his paternity leave so who goes/what problems does this solve?
Not baseball related, but Scott Pruitt has resigned as head of the Environmental Protection Agency. Halle-fucking-lujah! Hope the asswhipe rots in hell.
Right. Trump is draining the swamp. Of his own people.
I’m excited to see Cueto return. Is it pretty much a given that Tomlinson gets optioned?
Hey there [insert the rapidly dying vocative comma here] Daniel! Correct me if wrong, but by some circuitous, zigzag route, you got here via some of your fellow fans — or directly with you — while interviewing for Baseball’s Starry Night in early 2012. Right?
So who’s the troll hitting the thumbs-down button on all these posts?
who are we kidding, we probably all need more t-downs to keep us honest…but seriously, if there’s some dude out there who gets his kicks by t-downing some brilliant shit one of us writes, that doesn’t diminish the brilliance one fuck in my opinion….
Just played 9 today. I shot a 46 on the front at Big Meadow and that included an 8 (8!!) on a par 3 and I didn’t lose a ball. Missed the green. Chipped it in the trap. 3rd shot stayed in the trap. Hit it on green. Four putt. Probably the worst hole of golf I’ve ever played…..
No big deal BF, thoug I can imagine you steaming some!
I played a tournament with my club at Seascape Aptos ( beautiful fun course ) I hit a great drive on a par 4, had about 120 yards left, 2nd I ended up in a bunker, 3rd didn’t get out, 4th came out hot shot into another bunker across the green, left another one in that bunker, now hitting 6, got out, with a zip code length putt and ended up 3 putting for 9!! Game is brutal and fun at times like our SF Giants!!
played Seascape several years ago, very nice course.
Torres with the big collar, shirt unbuttoned to close to his bellybutton, chest shaven tightly, 3 pounds of jewelry…Twinner loved this dude.
Thanks for posting this, Flav. It will be cool to see what Torres has been up to of late.
Tony Graziani’s daughter is staying at our house tonight. Flap gold medal to the first Flapper who can tell me who he is w/o googling
QB from a Central Valley high school (same high school Joe Rudi went to, and George Lucas.). Went to Oregon or Oregon St. Then bopped around the NFL for a while.
Nice. His daughter thinks she’s the shit. I might have to tell her that her dad was just a guy.
I vaguely remember him being with the Falcons for a while, if I remember that correctly.
My guess was he was an actor on Sopranos…
1. Alen Hanson (S) LF
2. Buster Posey (R) C
3. Andrew McCutchen (R) RF
4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
6. Pablo Sandoval (S) 3B
7. Joe Panik (L) 2B
8. Gorkys Hernandez (R) CF
9. Johnny Cueto (R) P
It’s possible Torres is so unbuttoned because they’re getting make-up applied for the TV appearance which is a very standard thing.
Guessing that’s just how he rolls
Yeah, he’s on now. Seriously unbuttoned.
In Torres’s last days of pro ball, he was on the Pawsox. I met him in Syracuse after a game, in July 2014, as he was walking to the team bus, Thanked him for WS. Really sweet guy. Was with his son, I think. No autograph. Didn’t need or want one.
I dunno, I think we all deserve a thumbs down now and then, as well as a thumbs up. We’re not a cult. I’ve thumbed down as well as up here, depending on how I truly felt. It adds credibility. It’s like book reviews on Amazon. If they were all good, someone would think I had shills reviewing for me. Hey! There’s an idea!!
shills do happen pawlie. Co. instructs employees to buy a product then give positive review. They can keep the product and get reimbursed for it.
Let’s hope this is the Cueto of old…load ‘em in the first, give up a run, and then shut ‘em down.
I’m worried because some of his comments have sounded tentative, as if maybe he doesn’t believe he is better. I mean, c’mon, they considered Tommy John surgery FFS.
We’ve seen Cueto at low velocity before, but this is not encouraging.
So much for the Cueto of old…FUCK!
No, it doesn’t tell you how the ballpark is playing, it tells you Cueto is not right.
Just maybe Cueto was rushed…
I said last week that coming up now seemed pretty quick given that an elbow ligament strain is still a ligament tear. I guess we’ll see where this goes, not a good start for sure…
So Flav…you bogey that par 3, you shoot a 42. Pretty sweet. In Florida with the wife. Top hot for golf evwn though we are staying at a Ritz golf resort…lol. 3 days of the pool…
No Mar-a-Lago? :-p
I am sure G-head would jump on that…or maybe he is already there….😂
Well at least it’s still only the 2nd inning. Plenty of time for the G’s hot bats to…. oh nevermind…
The Giants have Nerf bats, though.
Trying to stay above .500.

The Flappers watching probably heard about Miami being up 9-0 over the Nats, and the Nats came back and won. It’s early in this game, but it doesn’t matter where they are in any given game if the bats don’t wake the hell up.
So at whose expense is Smardj getting his start this weekend? Not D-Rod. Probably Holland (I hope).
I got a Twitter liked from Tim Flannery
hmmmm Giants getting shut down at home by a pitcher with a 5 Plus ERA. Who could have seen this coming, shocking, I know.
VMI on fire so far.
it’s certainly not a guarantee for anything but if I posted the VMI numbers everyday and we picked the games to bet over/under you’d be shocked at how often they went your way. Weaver sucks but he’s going against an average hitting team in a pitchers park vs a team that has the worst VMI on the board tonight. That is slam dunk shit.
Gearrin getting loose in the pen. This game is about to turn even worse, I fear.
wtf thought it would be a good idea to send Amy G to harass Orlando Cepeda?
Yeah, that was pretty awkward. How about what she said to the little kid. “We’re not ready for him to disappear.”
Giants’ warning track power on full display.
for all those guys who thought Cutch was done when he got here and love to use saber stats to prove their point, hearty lol right now….
3 runs in their last 32 innings? Maybe they’re just a month late this year on their swoon month. Or just tired, it’s been hot, right? The weather, that is….
Flavor said, on July 4, 2018 at 8:46 pm (Edit)
not gonna be any better tomorrow. They have the worst VMI number on the board for hitters tomorrow. Likely shut down again…..
and look, Weaver isn’t even good. There are a lot of factors contributing to this night.
The biggest one is that the Giants suck…
Super lulz….
Ok, Craig, you’ve convinced me about this VMI thingee….
Hanny!
Wild Man Hanson ain’t got no VMI lag
And I thought VMI was some military school back east for dudes that can’t make it to the real military academies…
Looking at the upcoming trading deadline, MLB’s view of the NL West is…. Buyers: LA and AZ. Sellers: SD and maybe Rox. Doing nothing: Giants. We often say here that of course the team that’s on the field now (even though we’re now in July) will not resemble the one that takes the field at the end of the season. Might not be the case this year….
if they need to dump salary to be sure to slide under the luxury tax threshold, they’ll trade someone.
Maybe Watson?
That’s about it…
if Dyson bounces back a bit . . . . I’d hate to lose Watson
Do the Giants realize that the “sleep on the field” ad behind home plate is not directed at them?
lulz redux
Cards even landed a hour are 2 after the Giants did. Those midwesterners never need sleep, their up at the crack of dawn eating their vittles then shucking hay barrels..
The look on Holland’s face as he watched that velocity exit the ballpark was pathetic–bemused? nonplussed? mildly resigned to see his worthless pitch blasted into oblivion?
Might be time for another Pablo stint on the mound.
It’s about time to blow this piece of shit up and start over. What a joke.
Non-competitive product tonight. Bummer for the people that went to the game.
This sucks! Just sayin
I take it we’re not gonna get a Clint nod tonight?
https://giphy.com/embed/j7wBU7aHcKf7y
via GIPHY
Maybe nodding out…
When they suck this bad,a clip from“Scanners” would work..
Kruk’s optimistic — Cueto worked on his “arm strength” tonight. My gawd. Cueto is disabled.
This IS just magnificent. The reaction in the theater I was in was fantastic.
Earlier I was just wondering who would waste their time to thumb-down like 35 posts in a row on the last thread. Odd.
Brisbee’s bemoaning the game? Huh? The game has nothing to do with Cutch maybe getting some bad breaks on hard-hit balls. It’s these new and utterly useless stats that are fucking stupid.
Like I give a shit Pence’s groundout to 3rd was traveling at 78 MPH? Or Billy Bob’s home run was going 104 MPH? Or that launch angle of Posey’s popup? Oooooh, 90 degrees!
Like more arcane numbers are going to entice more people to watch the game? Fucking glue heads all of ’em.
And what’s with Cueto? I missed the game.
It has to be some misbegotten troll who gets off on such things. I’m not sure there’s that much value to the thumb ratings anyway. I certainly didn’t miss it before.
I heard that bad first inning on car radio, and never went back. Good thing. Why do I have a feelin’ we’re going to watch Cueto and Smardzxxxx stink up the joint their next few starts while Rodriguez ends up in the Pen or in Sac? And, Pence and Actionless will continue to also stink it up when they’re in there. This thing better not go South over a cliff heading into a second half again — or ATT is going to have seagulls sitting in the Lower Box seats waiting for the 7th inning meal gong…
What was Cueto throwing on the gun? Anybody know?…
Good call on Scanners, Kat. Classic. Imagine the mess a massive cranium like Bochy’s would make.
