A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

And now my flappin’ friends, we resume the exciting pursuit of the Break Even Trophy. I still can’t get over the tie breaker. Whoever wins last gets it. What are we teaching our kids with this silly rule? You don’t have to win the most, just make goddamn sure you win the last. If the series somehow ends 3-3 they should have one of those bridge workers laser cut a hole in the side of the bridge and weld that bitch in there until next season when hopefully sanity takes over and the trophy is awarded when one team wins the majority of the games in the season series…..

Hot take and I believe this gentleman sets Cove Chatter straight….

Panik and Strick can’t see how Giants miss either of them.
Panik is hitting .240 with .654 OPS. He hit 3 bomb in first 5 games and 1 since. .165 vs. LHP. I thought the power alleys and night games at ATT screwed him but he’s hitting .223 on the road this year. D is fine but Giants can only afford so many non contributing D first players.

Strick can be easily replaced. time to see what offers he’d get once he gets back. Might have to wait till off season but still.

    I can’t figure out Panik.
He’s got a repeatable, flat swing that has always looked like he should hit .320. Hasn’t happened…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 20, 2018 at 8:55 am

Rowand had a repeatable swing, too. I think Panik is what he is, he’s just a guy

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 20, 2018 at 10:10 am

He ain’t that guy, IMO. What I think he is, is a plus defender who has hit .270 lifetime, and I don’t see that going up, markedly. He has also averaged around 10 HRs and 60 RBI per year.

    ouch

  4. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 20, 2018 at 9:18 am

Panik probably would not generate much in a trade, so the big reason would be to deal him before FA pushes up his salary. Hanson bumps his defense a bit, he can play second. Energy level between the two is a Grand Canyon wide…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 20, 2018 at 10:11 am

Panik has two years of arbitration left, and has almost no trade value, so I doubt you see him moved anytime soon.

  5. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 20, 2018 at 9:42 am

Giants will make a move or two. Won’t amount to much given lux tax. Unless they crater the upcoming game schedule before end July, then maybe something consequential happens…

  6. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 20, 2018 at 9:43 am

This SFGiantsGuy on The Twitter is spot on in his assessment imo. At best the club will do some sort of BP add or try to get some prospects. The club could live with Panik’s sloth like speed if he was hitting bombs. Problem is that Hanson is outpacing him in HRs in less at bats and brings more all around talent. I said at the beginning of the year that the club was probably hoping Belt and Panik would post good numbers so one of them could be moved. Other than 2 more controllable years, I don’t see why anyone would want Panik and I don’t know how they can move Belt.

Luigi Rodriguez, just promoted to AA, doubled twice and had three hits yesterday. Concussion cloud might be lifting for Williamson who doubled and homered for the second consecutive day.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 20, 2018 at 11:34 am

We gotta get this Luigi dude on the squad just for the name alone

      • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 20, 2018 at 11:54 am

For sure. Dude was hitting over.400 before cratering to .300 and getting promoted to AA.

Slater will be on the Sac-train. It should be Pence, but that’s not going to happen, of course.

      • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 20, 2018 at 11:53 am

Pence has hit some booming grounders lately so pencil him in the lineup for the duration.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 20, 2018 at 6:50 pm

If the Giants even took back 90% of Pence’s remaining salary for the season, would anybody take him? They’d have to do a trade where the other team takes his whole salary, and Giants give up a really decent minor league arm – like Actionless, only better prospect. 2 months left of his salary is still 1/3 x $18 million = $6 million. Sheezus. Otherwise, for lux tax room, why trade Pence if you take back most of his salary?…

  9. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 20, 2018 at 10:53 am

Whit Merrifield KC 2B controllable contract is being discussed. Royals probably want players we don’t have. RH hitter, has pop and speed. .292 lifetime avg..

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 20, 2018 at 11:03 am

he’d be fine. Like a faster Robby Thompson

  10. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 20, 2018 at 12:02 pm

Dribblers are Pence’s specialty, even the fielder gets pissed off at a player that can’t make decent contact and hits spinning tops at him..

A father and his teenage son have a sports talk show called Baseball and the Boss (Springsteen),on WMRW, a community radio station in Warren Vermont. Kurt is a Red Sox fan, the dad, Mets. So they ask their listening audience (me, Don’s drinking buddy, Mike, and Kurt’s little league teammate Jason. Oh and Nicole, who has a big crush on both father and son) what potential trades Red Sox should make.
I call in and tell them I only care about the Giants, but maybe we can help both. Pedroia is hurt, they need LH relief. I suggest Panik for Heath Embree and prospects. Tell the Kid, after the Crawford for Giolito fiasco on KNBR, he’ll have to take care of things from his end.
Don suggested the Red Sox and Guants by getting Brad Hand.

The 8th anniversary of the Donnie Two Trips game is today, according to Jon Miller. What a fine game that was. Lincecum pretty much got shelled in LA and things looked bleak, but nobody on the Giants quit, including Bochy. I’ve always considered that to be the defining game of 2010. They may have been in 4th place, but they weren’t giving up. The record this year so far fairly resembles 2010 . . . .

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 20, 2018 at 7:22 pm
