Moving Away From Actual Major League Players
Pretty irritating take from mlbtraderumors.com about why the Giants didn’t sign Adam Jones:
“The Giants were a logical suitor for Jones given their unsettled outfield, and San Francisco ended up landing a number of veteran outfielders (Gerardo Parra, Cameron Maybin, Craig Gentry) to minor league contracts, rather than give Jones a guaranteed Major League deal. Given the timing, it seems like the Giants decided to move on from Jones rather than wait to see if his price dropped.”
He signed for 3 million. For a year. To be clear, I don’t really care about not getting Jones. He’s ok. He would have been a poor man’s McCutchen. But this outfield situation is just a joke. How can a team with a monster payroll go into a season with this shit? We’d be better off with Barry in his recliner and 2 other guys wheelin’ it big in the outer outfield…

A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball 
Jones’ terrible defense made him a 1 WAR player last season. I’m guessing Zaidi couldn’t get past Jones’ bad defensive metrics, and how that would translate to the Giants’ ballpark.
I’m moderately behind WAR as it relates to offense but there is a long way to go when it comes to defensive WAR. I’m not defending Jones’ D I’m just not impacted too much by a defensive WAR #
Yep, that Craig Gentry is just the power bat the Giants needed to look at. In his career, the dude has hit 6 more HRs than Kuiper ever did. I’m sure those 7 HRs were all monster shots.
“..we need new players.: Sure, but they can come from anywhere, not necessarily just the farm system. look at LA: Turner Muncy Taylor R Martin (and Grandal before him) and Pollock, over half their position players plus Maeda Ryu and Hill majority of their SPs. Only position guys they drafted were Bellinger Seager and Pederson, and Joc is platoon player.
Z I think is taking long look at what he has and what he is going to need this year before going out and getting new players. He might have to replace most of the IF and he’s giving young OF a chance. I don’t think they are “putrid” at all regardless of ST stats.
Rodriguez (a full year of ML experience ahead of Luzardo) and Moronta, plus maybe Suarez Beede or Anderson, will add youth to rotation and I still think Bum and Posey are going to be fine and make necessary adjustments as they age. Neither of them are done and will continue to contribute/lead by example.
I felt the same about Avisail Garcia. We have $30-$35 mill under the cap. They could give a half dozen players $5 mill contracts. An outfield of Avisail Garcia/Adam Jones/Cargo would be fun to watch and doable from a salary/budget point of view and supplement with our youngsters.
But that’s right….Farhan is about to pull off a bunch of mind-blowing deals!!!

With Duggar and Williamson this is the year that the club’s pipeline finally produces not one but TWO outfielders. You’d think people would be happy.

Perhaps; but I don’t see how it helps us do anything meaningful regarding becoming a playoff team now or in the long-term. That’s just my opinion on that.
I dont disagree…I would still be tempted to do it and force the young guys to beat out the seniors…
Zaidi is intrigued by the potential of Duggar and Williamson. Throw in Parra and Maybin, and there’s your 2019 Giants outfielders to start the season. I think Slater will be one of the last cuts, and put on the plane to Sac-town.
Sandoval, Hanson, Garcia, and one of the 4 outfielders is probably the bench.
That’s so depressing.
I’d rather Slater get the look than Maybin but could also see another arrival…
A player like Ryder Jones needs to be getting ‘Career Plan B’ going on the back-burner.
The player I’m most concerned about is Crawford. Hitting just seems a huge struggle for him these days. Hopefully he’s not entering into “Rowand slow bat-speed” territory.

If we make a ton of middling moves will that facilitate the rebuild? Or will that just let us tread water till we sink?
The fact is, the Giants have the money to trot out a playoff team. They were willing to continue to be over the cap for Stanton, they got under the cap last year and I would expect for a reason. They offer Harper $300 million so why are they being penny pinchers now? It sure sounds to me like the owners are willing to open up their wallets and purses, so I don’t have a clue why they couldn’t trade or sign for another bat in the OF. How about a stud at Third? You just give Longo an OFers mitt or have him come off the bench, you don’t have to cut him. Craw isn’t doing it for you? Get a stud and put Craw on the bench. Again, the Giants have money and could do a hell of a lot more with it than signing Maybin.
Just my opinion.
I’d guess there’s only a couple of players the owners are willing to open the wallet for. Harper especially since he projects HOF numbers and could be marketing gold. Otherwise, why bust the bank for anyone else on the market.
Stratton with 2 hits, 1 ER and 4 SO through 4. A good showing against the dodgers likely starters. The Giants have scored a run despite going down like Stormy Daniels at the plate.
Shaw and Jones must’ve really stunk it up to get axed on March 11th…

Bart cleared the bases with a double to defeat the Dodgers today. In ST so far he has an OPS of about 1.300.

More wondering about the moneyball metrics approach, Clearly teams are doing this with their lineups and offensive strategies, but I haven’t seen much about on the defense side. Are pitching and defense decisions also being made / going to be made in this way, based on the opposing batters’ tendencies? Obviously teams have always studied opposing batters, watched video, etc., to know how to pitch to them, but just wondering how applicable and/or easy it is to do that during the course of a game on the other side of the ball…
In theory, an algorithm could call pitches. The manager would be back in control!

Having that slim bit of extra talent that distinguishes high performing players can’t protect you from the devastating effects of all too early failure. The architects of the 2013 and 2016 drafts certainly believe that.
