A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

#saladdays

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 17, 2019

When you talk about salad days, you’re talking about weekends like this one. I’m flying up to Portland tonight, Preakness tomorrow and then right after it me and BirdDog storm The Rose Garden—at least that’s what it was called when I was going to Lewis & Clark, not sure what they call it now.

I’ll finish cappin’ the Preakness by tomorrow am but right now I’m leaning towards Bourbon War as my top pick.

Giants in Arizona tonight. Smarge in the thin air, this might not work out too good….

The Rose Garden (great name) is now called the Moda Center (terrible name.)

Pfffttt. As we get older, everything, without question, gets worse.

  2. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 17, 2019 at 7:27 am

Rose Garden was always sold out, “in front of 12.666” or something. The old unis and warm ups I thought were really cool, the black with red stripe across front to the waist, or red with black.
Fun fact: blazers 1-10 vs. GS in playoffs. See if Dame has enough Game to get another shot at one in Oakland.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on May 17, 2019 at 8:04 am

I think that was the Memorial Coliseum that always had the 12,666.

Ha Mac always has the right answer. thx

Giants did pay Rays $1.1 mil of his salary for them to take Kratz off their hands in return for the dreaded PTBNL. Um, this is a development I could see applied to few others going forward.
    Has anyone seen Altherr?
Btw, AZ does have a humidor. F/G did a study on this week or so ago and it does appear to have negative affect, if only slight.

  4. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 17, 2019 at 8:25 am

Should be a blast to go to a game up there. Never been to Portland very much. Eugene a ton.

Pretty funny moment when Seth Curry passed the ball to Kantor, who was standing on the bench. Seth had a nice game tho. I think he was the only Blazer to score in the last 3:30.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 17, 2019 at 8:30 am

yeah Seth had like 16, helped to balance McCollum and Lillard getting outscored 61-45 by Curry and Thompson.
Problem is with small LU and Leonard/Turner in there they can’t defend the other end. all the pick and rolls confused the rotations and Warriors got layups and lob dunks to guys wide open underneath the hoop

  5. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on May 17, 2019 at 8:47 am

I missed most of it, but the Warriors must have had a lot of dunks and layups. Blazers outscored Warriors 54-27 on 3s — that’s usually more than enough to win — but Warriors made up for it by outscoring Blazers 66-40 on 2s. And only 1 blocked shot for the Blazers. So the difference was Warriors 21-17 on free throws. As you said yesterday, Curry (and Thompson) need to attack and get to the line, and Curry ended up 11-11.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 17, 2019 at 10:19 am

Yeah, Looney killed Portland inside. He and Jerebko had 3 offensive rebounds each. 12 total. For all the 3s, the Warriors defense was stifling in the 3rd quarter to get the Dubs back in it after falling behind by 17 in the 2nd quarter. Bell had a pretty good game as well. Thompson had a weird game. 8-22 from the field. 4-8 on his 3s though. The usual solid D.

He has power 20 bombs with Brewers 2 years ago, has speed 54 career SB only 14 caught.Good fielder, does K to much and has only a career .216 avg but the upside and with nothing to lose is worth it imo..

Dyson has career OPS of .669 in 2000 ABs. This season it’s at .800…hope that regresses to mean too starting this weekend.
How did AZ get 4 games over .500 after unloading all the guys they did?

  13. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 17, 2019 at 7:05 pm

Analytics or not sometimes things just work out. Dodgers traded Kemp and Puig to the Reds (who suck) then signed Pollock for $80 mil.
Pollock needs surgery and will be out for quite a while, not a surprise.
Meanwhile Pederson has 14 bombs already and .943 OPS, 330 points higher than Puig.

I would too if one of them would actually work out. Austin hit a bomb and then he’s out there in LF and botched a fly ball hit right at him in DRod last game. Vogt had monster opening and since then is 4-20 with 3 hits in one game vs. Reds.
Pillar had big op to help the team last night after Craw and instead popped out to RF with sacks loaded.
Broxton worth a look sure, and would add some speed.
Meanwhile good old Triple O Ehire hit bomb #3 for Twins last night.

Loo, lotta talk out here from local journalists on what you mentioned. Seems couple of them at least think Durant is new version of Bonds, great player/not such nice guy for an interview. Lot of complicated analytic stuff seems to point to GS being more effective without him. As long as dynamic duo are on, sure.
As Chuck said, team is different, since Durant and his 25+ shots are replaced by guys who shoot handful of times and get O boards. More ops and sets run to free up Curry and Thompson by the facilitators Iguodala Green and Livngston.

But no way I’ll accept fact that Warriors are better team with guys like Jerebko Bell or Cook on the floor in place of Durant. He is ultimate match up nightmare who can go get 40. He has the face up 3 (hi Lebron) the unstoppable midrange pull up and can get to rim and dunk over anyone.

  52. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on May 18, 2019 at 5:56 pm

The Dubs are no way better without KD, they are just different in game flow and we have seen them be good or great at times without him, but that has not been for a 7 games series with a team that poses matchup issues as the Bucks may be with Giannis.

I think without KD we are going to have our hands full with the Bucks. I am not sure we beat the Cavs two years ago without KD…

Heart of a Champion baby! Once again proving God is a Warriors fan. He had us play the Fail Blazers instead of the Nuggets allowing KD to rest!!!

A Johnny Cueto sighting on the Giants MLB page, great to see him throwing, personally I’ve missed the guy and I’m sure the team has too. Says he wants to be ready to pitch in September. Hmmm… not sure what the benefit of that would be, but I guess as long as he’s really ready…. I’m still amazed to watch pitchers throw so fast and so effortlessly. A 90-mph is considered slow. Last time I threw at a carnival radar pitch thingee, I was winging it as hard as I possibly could, and I’m not a super weak guy… never topped 65 mph.

I think they said he was already hitting 80 mph.
