A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

AHOFO

We’ve got 7 games right out of the blocks that should quell the swell of enthusiasm for the Giants big move on the last wild card spot. Milwaukee AND Colorado. This should actually be very interesting. The Giants have played better on the road this year than at home. But The Brewers are better than we are and Sherpa Town always sucks for us. Regardless, there can be no more long losing streaks this season. It starts right now and continues on through September. Play .700 ball.

Let’s see if they can do that.

I’d be happy with .500. Recent streak of 15 wins out of last 25 is one thing; extending good baseball over another couple months before call ups would be different. The NL features quite a number of .500 teams including Cards we just beat. If Giants can elevate themselves from “last guaranteed” into that group it would be an accomplishment.

    Speaking of freak accidents:
“BOURNEMOUTH, England – A retired jockey died when she fell onto an eco-friendly metal drinking straw which impaled her eye, an inquest heard.”

“Elena Struthers-Gardner, 60, who was known as “Lena,” suffered brain injuries in the accident at her home in Broadstone, England.
She was carrying a mason-jar style drinking glass with a screw-top lid in her kitchen when she collapsed. The 10-inch stainless steel straw entered her left eye socket and pierced her brain.
Her death has led to a coroner warning that metal drinking straws should never be used with a lid that fixes them in place, and “great care should be taken” while using them.”

the initial signings by Z were quite bad. Supposedly he was surprised by how bad lot of Giants looked in ST and got caught trying to fix things at last minute for opening day. But Solarte Parra Kratz (Kratz!) and other crummy Cs he signed plus the 2 kid rejects from other teams, everyone looked awful. This definitely did contribute to poor Giants start and their overall record, along with pitching.

Not to beat a dead horse, but it would be interesting to interview all the nerds who calculate WAR, and ask about certain players’ scores. The people at Baseball-Reference, FanGraphs, and Baseball Prospectus take their WAR calculations very seriously. They know GMs, and Hall of Fame voters, consider WAR as a factor.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 12, 2019 at 9:34 am

        Parra 0.6

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 12, 2019 at 10:35 am

and do you see how stupid that is?

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 12, 2019 at 10:48 am

I don’t see it that way. It makes me curious why they rate them that way. I might ultimately eventually have disagreement with them on some ratings, but I do know they take their ratings deathly seriously. I know they factor in defense in a way that you’re very skeptical of. Fair point.
But if it’s all just stupid, why does the industry as a whole still value that metric? Wouldn’t it have been laughed out of town by now?

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 12, 2019 at 11:08 am

i’m not saying WAR isn’t useful. It is. But like all metrics, especially newer ones, there are flaws in them. When you see Parra more highly rated than Jones that’s an example of that. Same as when you see Longo, who was playing like absolutely shit when I noted he had the highest WAR on the team. He playing better now but that isn’t what is WAR was reflecting. It was reflecting his value up to that point in the seaon

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 12, 2019 at 11:35 am

If you can’t explain how Parra rates higher than Jones, then you don’t understand it either.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 12, 2019 at 11:39 am

Wins and losses used to be the be-all-end-all stat for pitchers. That went out of favor and ERA was considered more and more. Now WHIP is highly touted. The point being, stats come and go in and out of favor.

GWRBI used to be a thing. WAR may go the way of the dodo.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 12, 2019 at 5:00 pm

WHIP is probably the best stat of all because it’s so simple and useful. No contortion whatsoever. WAR couldn’t be more complicated. Seems useful as a quick-look summary for what happened over 1/2 a season, a full season, several seasons, etc. There’s a wikipedia page devoted to explaining WAR (including the differences between BRef’s WAR and Fangraphs WAR). Not all that interesting, really.

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 12, 2019 at 11:51 am

Zumie, my contention with WAR is they aren’t basing it on OUR replacement players.

They base it on some abstract ‘common replacement player’ metric. Ours were uncommonly bad.

Because you are saying that, based on WAR, Jones would not provide any help to a team that got nothing out of LF for the first month of the season.

OK, let’s put it this way. If Kokomo had put up Jones’ hitting numbers through the first month of the season, do you think the Giants would have more wins?

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 12, 2019 at 12:37 pm

I need to clarify- I fully agree the Giants outfield was lousy the vast majority of the first half of the season.
All I’m saying is that WAR is suggesting you’re over-rating the difference Jones would have made up to now, had he been a starter the whole first half. Sure, he was pretty hot the first couple of months of the season and would have contributed to wins, but he cooled off after that and would have contributed to losses, had his SF production matched his D-Back production, which it likely wouldn’t have, given the ballpark difference.
You said not signing Adams “pisses you off.” I just don’t have near that kind of emotion about it. I had really low expectations for this season and am fully onboard with a tear-down rebuild.
It just seems to me really early to be pissed off at Zaidi. Just my opinion. Hey, that’s what baseball blogs are for. 🙂

  20. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 12, 2019 at 12:25 pm

The bottom line: nobody here understands or can explain how War is calculated. That alone disqualifies all of us from using to support a point. My experience with people who get jazzed up about WAR is that it makes them feel more academic than other baseball fans (I’m not accusing zumiee of that he seems to like totally about it to get a reaction, nothing wrong with that)

  21. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 12, 2019 at 12:26 pm

Using it not totally about, sorry on my pH

  22. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 12, 2019 at 12:47 pm

Well, I’m assuming OPS+ is a big factor in WAR. OPS+ tries to adjust for the player’s home ballpark. 100 is considered average. Jones is at 92.

I use WAR to try to show where Zaidi is coming from. He and the other 29 GMs use metrics like WAR and OPS+.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 12, 2019 at 12:50 pm

I doubt Sabean and Evans used a lot of the new metrics. Their approach worked great until it didn’t anymore. They were now getting out-played by the new GMs.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 12, 2019 at 12:58 pm

        From Wikipedia:

Baseball Reference uses six components to calculate WAR for position players:
The components are batting runs, baserunning runs, runs added or lost due to grounding into double plays in double play situations, fielding runs, positional adjustment runs, and replacement level runs (based on playing time). The first five factors are compared to league average, so a value of 0 represents an average player.

Batting runs depends on weighted Runs Above Average (wRAA), weighted to the offense of the league, and is calculated from wOBA.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 12, 2019 at 1:07 pm

        Also weighted for home ballpark.
It’s amazing that Giants hitters’ WAR would be even lower if their WAR wasn’t bumped up a bit for playing in their home ballpark.

For pitching or hitting, I wonder.
For hitting it could possibly refer to RBI chances. TF was one of the first I heard downplaying RBIs as a stat. Said it greatly depended on other guys getting on base. It drives older fans nuts to see RBIs lose status as a stat.

Right. And this was before launch angles and batted ball MPH and the like. My reasoning for being pissed about not making the move for Jones is pretty obvious. Moreso in hindsight. It would have been a simple cheap move that would have paid off. Our OF has been awful these past couple seasons and starting out with 2 completely overmatched guys wasn’t very smart and it led to the revolving clubhouse door that the players have bitched about all year.

Would Jones blocking Yaz really matter? No. Yaz is 29. Slater? Not really. He’s 26. It’s not like George Foster is waiting in the wings.

SHAKE YOUR MEMORY MAKER VOLUME 2
    7/11/19
Morning walk with Buster down to Pt. Fermin Lighthouse City Park.
Beautiful spot jutting out on a cliff, maybe 150 feet above the ocean.
Some of you might recall the story of USC kicker Mario Danelo mysteriously falling to his death in this area after a long night of drinking…..just days after winning the National Championship. 10 years ago or so. Not difficult to picture that happening. In some points, if you step over the railing you are in immediate danger of taking a fatal fall.
I have finally accepted that more golf probably ain’t in the cards for me on this trip. Riding a bike feels ok though, so I have been utilizing the bike rental station in the area and that has been fun. They even have some bikes that give you an electric boost as you pedal. I rode down to the San Pedro Fish Market, which is pretty touristy, but does have a nice view of the harbor and you can buy a piece of fish at the market and then take it over to have it seasoned as you like and grilled right before your eyes. I picked out a nice piece of halibut and it was pretty damn good with grilled bell peppers, onions, and potatoes.
Trev pulled up just as I got back and I showed him the local sights. We then drove to The Underground, a bar in Hermosa Beach that was once owned by soccer stud George Best and is now owned by a college friend of mine. Had a pint and played shuffleboard. T had an outstanding Club Sando.
Then up to Playa Del Rey where Matt left us a key to his place. I gave myself a summer buzz haircut using Matt’s kit and we shot the breeze with Matt and his roommates as they came home. I took the boys out for an all inclusive meal at an Italian place. Lots of food and drink and laughter. Ran up a pretty good tab, but it was worth it.
We spent the night at Matt’s place.

      • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 12, 2019 at 6:53 pm

But that 2002 team hit 198 home runs…belies the argument about the park being unhittable…just need hitters that can…

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 12, 2019 at 7:18 pm

Those are 2…will take a super duper Giant fan to get this next one. Hint…he threw me a ball coming off the field at a Giants-Nats game at RFK while sticking my Giants hat on my 5 year old and holding him up. He throws it right at me and I muff the one handed catch, rolls down the aisle and this woman picks it up and starts celebrating…motherfucker!!! Obvious it was for my kid…
