A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Aiming High. Then Higher.

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 18, 2019

Niggled up to 3.5%, the Giants are taking #AHOFO quite seriously. In a million years I never would have thought we could sweep Colorado in Nepal and take 6 of 7 from them and the Brewers.

I’m still positive Z will do the right thing and sell. But there is nothing wrong with enjoying some W’s. You can hear it in the voices of the announcers, too. They are so happy. They have to call all these games, we’ve been terrible since literally the all star break 3 years ago. That would wear on anyone.

Bum tonight.

A fun gambling story:

another fun fact re: Pumpsie Green. His younger brother was Cornell Green, who also played at El Cerrito HS, contra costa JC and 3 years of basketball at Utah state (where he still holds records from early ’60s). this is same guy who became Cowboys DB, drafted to play football for them who had never played that sport in college.

Good stuff, Willie. I remember CG very well and didn’t know any of that…

my mentor buddy Italian guy from Oakland told me he played b-ball against Cornell Green in JC, and Green lit them up for 30 points. Utah St. became a destination for other Oakland area guys to go who maybe would have had difficult time getting into bigger schools in state here. In it’s own way Utah is kind of like Indiana for college hoops. Where Damian Lillard played too for Weber St.

Lillard could buy the state of Utah today…

“Talk about a double standard, how come the Negro Leagues never get any flack for not allowing white players?”

There’s not a single piece of evidence that a white player who wanted to play in the Negro Leagues was turned away.
On the other hand, we have many examples of black players being turned down by MLB clubs until Robinson was allowed in.

Flav what does VMI say about Giants returning from elevation of Coors, to play Mets who are coming into town from Minnesota?

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 18, 2019 at 8:55 am

Mets are -10.99, Giants -25.99. Those are the two worst VMI numbers for hitters in MLB tonight so I would expect a low scoring game especially with these 2 pitchers going.

this is why I don’t buy into Zumiee’s theory that all these supposed Giants fans will be outraged if we sell. Lots and LOTS of Giants fans, all baseball fans actually, frequent mlbtraderumors.com. If this poll is any indication, fans *get* what’s going on and know Zaidi needs to stay the course. As I’ve said, maybe some Fabebook housewives will be bummed. Nobody else should be. This is an exciting time to be a Giants fan if Z makes the right moves by the deadline.
I also call total bullshit on this writers assertion that we may be seeing delayed *fruits of Bobby Evans labor*. This run has been fueled almost entirely by Zaidi adds.

Since June 1st, the Giants are 24-15.

Last year we were 68-67 on 8/31, we traded Cutch and lost 11 in a row. We ended up going 5-21 in Sept.

“…we’ve been terrible since literally the all star break 3 years ago. ” but 3 years ago we also went to the NL Championship series and almost pulled off going back to the WS.

The crazy thing about 2016 is we had a bunch of injuries early, and it was all about ‘wait till Pence and Panik and Belt come back.’ They came back and we cratered.

Unlike the recent Flapalooza that has clearly helped the team, the East Coast version back in 2016 only prolonged their second half funk. I think SanDawg was the only guy to see a victory when him and his son Trevor (MapDawg) trekked out to Yankee Stadium on a 100 degree Sunday, IIRC…

Sports fans that go online to various sports sites are a small % of the fan-base of any team. Most of the fans will have a hard time digesting the trading of Bum and Smith unless it happens after the team craters again. I base that on conversations with various fans. And, yes, also the many fans on Facebook who see trading Bum and Smith as a inexplicable white flag of surrender in the 2019 season.

  13. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 18, 2019 at 11:12 am

For myself, I’m 100% for the rebuild, but if the Giants keep surging, I won’t blame Zaidi for going in on ‘19. Bochy’s last season and all that. There’s a human element of this situation that has to be considered.

      • pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on July 18, 2019 at 11:56 am

Mays was in sad decline as a Met. Injured and sore, especially knees. Saddest memory: his tossing the ball to George Theodore in the OF so The Stork could throw it in during the 1973 WS. I was shitfaced, near-blackout, but I can’t erase that.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 18, 2019 at 12:24 pm

That’s my recollection as well, Pawlie. I saw a game at Shea in ’73, and he looked old and very slow. I think he had a double, and they won the game against the Cubs, iirc, but it was more sad than anything else. I mean, shit he was 42.

  20. pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on July 18, 2019 at 11:53 am

True, Magnus, this is the most alive and least moribund we’ve seen the Giants since ASG 2016. (I nominate the low point then being Sergio Romo disrespecting Bochy on the mound when he was pulled; was it during the season or the playoff loss to Chi, or both?). Anyway, the atmosphere on the bench and presumably in the clubhouse, and presumably in the stands — and even HERE! — is tangibly different, tangible as in more positively radioactive hope-drenched crackling firestormed galvanic particulate matter, different and fun and more buoyant. Will it last? No idea. I for one will take it as it comes, enjoy the ride. I’ll enjoy the ride with or without deadline trades. Honestly? I am already prepared to be sullen and down when the next loss comes. It’s Opening Day Redux for me. On every Opening Day if we win, I feel like we’ll go 162-0 and if we lose, 0-162. That’s where I’m in. To be irrational and absurd about it, I’m calling this next game BIG.

I expect a low scoring game tonight.Giants just playing 4 grueling games in 95% heat has to take a toll after that long road trip, plus a great pitching matchup should keep it low scoring.
You guys see that massive bomb Alonso hit yesterday? 474 ft that’s approaching Coke Glove territory! Big Cat Andres Gallaraga has come the closest that I recall, and it came up short, just don’t think it will ever happen I believe the glove distance is over 500 ft??

  23. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 18, 2019 at 12:52 pm

Most of the offensive explosions lately have come on the road. Giants won flap night then 2 days later Pillar went off on AZ in a 4 game split then SF took 2 of 3 vs. cards, after losing 2 of 3 to Rox before Brewers series..
Looked at splits for Craw and Belt
Belt is hitting .203 at home with .690 OPS 3 bombs
on road .273 with .850 OPS 8 bombs and slugging pct 140 points higher
Craw’s OPS is almost 200 points higher on road, basically .800 vs. 600 and majority of bombs.

Even if SF changes park it’s not gonna be a launching pad, especially for LHs. these 2 spots they need better production and more power. The yard owns these 2 and is in their heads–Z has to move them for better prospects, now or off season. If you have to move pitching to do it, then look at it.

  25. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 18, 2019 at 1:10 pm

I like Solano but what he’s doing at the plate in small sample size is probably an anomaly and not sustainable.
The two 17/18 yr old kid IFs Luciano and Toribio are doing well in Rookie Ball but unlikely to contribute for few years.
Avelino is hitting OK for Sac but that’s red flag in itself where most of league is lighting it up. His .780 OPS probably drops 100 points at ML level and his 9 bombs would be half that.

So 2b/SS have to be addressed, in addition to guys they drafted. giants have to get more out of these spots in future than what Panik and Crawford are giving them right now. Both of them need change of scenery.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but if Bum did get traded to LA and was instrumental in helping them win I think there is a way to look at that like “hey, that’s cool, you guys couldn’t win one for 3+ decades and it took a Giant legend to help you get it done.”
Watching Bum dominate in the post season again, if he’s still able to cobble the magic together, would be electrifying. I could root for him on any team, possibly even the Dodgers. Look, LA is going to win one again at some point. Nobody has enjoyed their post season failures more than me. But if it is going to happen why not get it done with a Giant legend leading the charge? Anyone else feel this way?

Might as well fix their pen problems as well and give them Smith and Watson. . . .

What would we get? Petersen? I can see trading with the A’s but not the Dodgers. Just for the fact that any push might be the push they need. If we could cripple them with a trade, sure. But I don’t see that happening.

The Chron had an article about trade value, and this looks WAY optimistic as to what the return would be.

Has anybody ever pulled that Boone stuff on Joe West? I hope so. He wouldn’t sit there and take it, though. Angel Hernandez, too.
    Bring on the robot umps…

It seemed like a miracle when Crawford was not rung up on the outside by a couple inches 2-2 change up tonight. It shouldn’t be that way.

um no way Z sends anyone to help LA. Unacceptable. Let them win on their own. Gal friend of mine was at the game they gave away the Opie no hit bobblehead and I got an email with the pic of her holding him up. Nice gal but would be hard to handle if LA ever won one. She has seen this site’s ring pics, all 3 of them.
Tribe haven’t won since 1948 I think. Almost had the Cubs too.
Mariners never even the year they won 116 (?) games.

The only time I could ever care if the Dodgers won a World Series is after I’m dead first! Fuck LA!!!

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 18, 2019 at 8:46 pm

Why? He’s only thrown 76 pitches and dealing in a 1-1 game! He would of taken Boch behind the woodshed and beat the crap out of him if he pulled him.,

  66. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 18, 2019 at 8:38 pm

  67. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 18, 2019 at 8:38 pm

Be real surprised if they pitch to Belt at all.

  68. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 18, 2019 at 8:39 pm

This catcher is bizarre he doesn’t really set a target. He drops the mitt when the pitcher is in his windup.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on July 18, 2019 at 8:46 pm

He’s been lousy at the plate this season, a little surprising Bochy didn’t pinch-hit there as you mentioned above.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 18, 2019 at 8:47 pm

He does have 18 HRs in his career. An average of about 2 a year, but he also kills a lot of rallies.
