The Team Stayed Together! YAAYYY!!!! Now What?
As we enter August, we now might have to helplessly watch the slow implosion of our young pitchers. DRod is a mess, I’m not really talking about him. But Shaun Anderson and Black Shoes Beede, 2 guys who must pitch well if we are going to keep the dream of .700 ball alive, are headed into some uncharted dog days. Anderson pitched 141 innings in 2018 and 109.2 so far this year, Beede only 87 innings last year, 104.2 this year. The good news there is that the Giants have never been too keen on limiting young pitchers innings, although that could change with Young Z at the helm. We shall see.
I read Kat at the end of the last thread saying Pillar hasn’t had a day off since June 11. The way that guy plays? Absolutely criminal and negligent of Bochy to do that.
I thought the last trip through Colorado would go poorly and they swept. For some reason we are right back in Nepal. Pretty quick turnaround. This one looks ominous…..
If Gennett is live and ready to go, then what’s gonna go down with Panik? Panik btw loves Coors and has career numbers there. Extra IFs with Green Solano Sando, plus Belt Panik Craw and Gennett.
I predicted DRod’s stuff wouldn’t last . . . Actually, he started going down hill during Sept/Oct of the 2018 season, with his WHIP at 1.42 . . . same as it is now (1.45) for the entire 2019 season. He has 5 pitches (good news), but 2 of his pitches are terrible (the sinker especially is dog shit and he uses it too much). Couple that with inexperience and not getting consistent playing time this season in the bigs, it’s no wonder he’s struggling. I think FanGraphs had an excellent article they put out in June or July of last season that explains all of the above.
Is it Paul or GH (Peter) who is going to the day game on the 14th? I will be there with a buddy and my parents. Give me a shout if that’s the case. Also, I am definitely going to see a San Jose game before they promote our stud prospects, Bart and Ramos. I will be in town through the 24th.
Good timing Blade. I have a small group of friends going so let’s touch base. Another flap fest limitation, I thought the bleachers seats were general seating so think buddy is getting tickets in the arcade area above right field wall where the first flap fest was this year…
So now need a Chia addition for our Boston reunion…
Fantastic! Looking forward to seeing you again Peter. I will probably have to keep my mom away from you though (she’s waaaay more liberal than I am – almost a leftist), as she would probably kill you if she found out you worked in the Trump Administration. HAHAHA . . . π
I am scoring our tickets today on StubHub or similar (parents don’t understand the deal with tickets being sent to their phone, so I got stuck with this chore) . . . We’ll probably be 3rd base side, lower deck (shade preferably).
yeah that’s what I remembered Blade, you called this. I was kinda surprised too and didn’t really believe it. Turns out he was even worse.
Willie, I was serious about a San Jose game. You possibly in? I think snarrk would go and perhaps others???? I wasn’t too excited about my parents asking me to go to a SF game one day after my arrival to the bay area. I just hate the traffic, etc., in the city, coupled with no time to relax after a flight. Whatever.
Bring her on Blade…likely maybe a mid-game meet-up in the outfield somewhere.
My parents are fairly old, albeit in good shape. My buddy and I will definitely touch base with you guys. Email me your telephone number (blade3colorado@yahoo.com), as I only have your email,
Well these next 10 days are make or break with 3 in Colorado and th en Nats and Phills 8n for 7 games…I think we need to win 6 of the 10 to be legit wild card contender. Splitting a 4 game series at home next weekend against the Phills will be unappealing. Take 3 of 4 from them and then split the first two series and we are still in the hunt…
I think itβs the end of the road for Joe unfortunately, his bat and fielding have really gone downhill the past few seasons, with the addition of Gennett (and especially Dubon for later) Zmanβs has clearly seen enough of his play and moving on,probably today he gets released. He will always have a special place in Giants history with βThe Tossβ with just the glove to Crawford to complete a crucial DP against Hosmer and the Royals! Good luck Joe moving forward, some team will pick you for your experience for a playoff push going forward..
Looks like Dubon scored what would be the winning run last night in the Sacto win. 1-4. Any reports we have on Rickard in CF in Sacto? Ex-Oriole? Can he maybe can give Pillar a spell? Crawford maybe to the DL for that roster spot. Shaw should probably be up with the Hurt Dick and kick Austin Powers to the curb for the roster spot.
Panik has a special place in my heart as well. The DP you cited was easily one of the top 5 spectacular infield plays in all of World Series history. Even more impressed with his 2014 clutch play because he was a rookie. Fast forward to 2015, he followed it with career numbers and scored the Gold Glove and All Star game gig.
Yeah, I have to believe injuries took their toll on him. By the by AK, I also loved Duffy, who was called up in August of 2014 . . . That play in Game 2 of the 2014 National League Championship Series, where Duffy scored the tying run from second base on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning was special. Man, he was motoring. Sheesh, I was so pissed when they traded the Duffman and broke up the “homegrown” infield in 2016. To me that was “bad juju” and the beginning of the end of the Giants dynasty.
Yeah Blade, Duffyβs mad dash was crazy good.
Players like the Duffman &Panik helped solidify this team with their hard nose play and passion.Letting the Duffster go was a huge mistake for team chemistry at the time, still miss him to and that raccoon π¦ of a cat he had Skeeter?
Right, looking at the schedule, these are key series coming up, but really it’s *playoff baseball* every game from here on out for these guys. There are 3 ways this could go: collapse and sink out of contention; tread water in August and hope for a good September; or perhaps somewhat surprisingly torch the competition and take hold of the WC.Bets on which way this will go? If the 2nd or 3rd options are to happen, it’s likely going to take some of the new blood stepping up, with Pillar and A-Dick hurting. It would be great to see the newly arriving players plug in and play well. Bochy is going to earn his last 2 months at the helm….
I hope we can compete, but realistically? I think we shot our wad and we go south to our former mediocrity. Our hitting has been trending down for the last 2 weeks . . . I mean come on, we won quite a few games by 1-2 runs, many in extra innings. Seriously, how long did anyone think that run of luck would run? By the by, our run differential still sucks and that’s a stat I pay attention to. It’s the worst in the NL (teams not named the Pirates and Marlins).
Agreed. And without the guy who fueled most of this (Dick) it’s going to get pretty ugly. Ok, off to golf at Aubry Glen in Bend, talk to you guys later
Hey Flav, quick question – how far are you from Brookings? I am seriously considering bouncing there after I sell my condo. I understand it’s in Oregon’s “Sun Belt” and I can actually afford an ocean view in that area. Same deal with the Big Island, I am also considering.
Anyway, when you get back from golf, let me know your opinion of the area.
Blade, Oregon is an awesome place! I live on the coast half way up. This is a state in two colors. Major parts blue as blue can get. Down in the southern part (never been south of Coos Bay) I’ve heard there are gorgeous places like Brookings. I’ve also heard that there is some rough country folks down in the Cave Junction area. North of where I live on the west of I-5 it is similar to country north of SF. Eastern part of state is sparse and at times quite conservative. Only one Republican US congressman in the state (Eastern side). Social programs like health programs are as good as any in the nation.
Thanks Stan. For whatever reason, I forgot you lived in Oregon. Yeah, agree with what you said about North of SF . . . I lived in Old Shasta (overlooks city of Redding) and I have been many times to Klamath Falls – both conservative enclaves. Radio sucks up there.
I’ll go with the Flav reverse jinx and say the bottom falls out…
I am getting a Watervoy feel here but the part where the Towel Boy goes into an NFL game as a Steeler receiver….

Plus a running start is not the same thing…
Iβm sure the Aβs had this kid workout for them and not just off a video clip.Good story for him, but just a novelty, with maybe a movie in the works.Moneyball 2??
Gennett and Duggar in,
D-Rod to Sac; Austin DFA.
Surprising to keep Panik. Maybe they just want to make sure Gennett is healthy. If Gennett is healthy, I donβt think Panik stays on the 25 man roster.
Yes a bit of surprise Panik gets more leash, no surprise about Austin who was more of a novelty they couldnβt afford to keep anymore.
And thank god they added an outfielder totally stupid if they didnβt, Duggar the obvious choice, but Iβm hoping for Davis after he adjust quickly at Sac!
Dodgers starting one of their new toys tonight Pitcher Dustin May against the Padres. He will probably throw a no-hitter since they can do no wrong..
I was going to say 6 innings of 2-hit ball, but a no-hitter sounds right.
1. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
2. Mike Yastrzemski (L) LF
3. Buster Posey (R) C
4. Pablo Sandoval (S) 3B
5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
6. Scooter Gennett (L) 2B
7. Steven Duggar (L) CF
8. Austin Slater (R) RF
9. Shaun Anderson (R) P
Hah! I was just about to post that Sidd Finch story.
Yeah, I’m sure they just want to get Scooter’s feet wet before they make the switch.
Got a couple of messages from Unca and Chi (who is doing fine and plans on checking in . . . He’s just been busier than hell). Anyway, they are down with a game in San Jose, but none of us have checked the Bees (Giants? lol) schedule, so no idea when they play at home. We’ll keep everyone abreast of what’s going down.
San Jose Giants.
Not a very original name.
It use to be the Bees.
Okay, here’s the schedule (at least for me) . . . Two games on the 16th (Fri @ 7pm) and 17th (Sat @ 5pm). The latter game is probably the easiest one, e.g., little to no traffic and wait for it . . . It’s Italian night!!!! On Friday, it’s “A League Of Their Own” and I have zero clue what that’s about, other than women. Also, does anyone know where/who is the “Inland Empire???” No idea where that team is from (Fresno???).
Near L.A.
βA League of their Ownβ is a pretty good movie based on a true story about a womenβs baseball league during WWII.
I know that, but the SJ site doesn’t make the connection. Essentially, there’s going to be fireworks and a Bruce Bochy bobble head giveaway if you buy the expensive tickets. Huh? What does that have to do with “A League Of Their Own?”
Conversely, the Italian night has Italian food and the Giants will wear special jerseys (Italian names or numbers?) that attendees can bid on. At least that has some connection.
Tom Hanks plays the manager of the team. He has the famous line: βThereβs no crying in baseball!β
Geena Davis is the co-star.
Rosie OβDonnell and Madonna had supporting roles.
I know, I know . . . What do ya think? I’ve been in a cave with Osama Bin Laden watching soccer games when that came out?
Sorry. Just trying to be helpful. All I had to go on was:
βOn Friday, itβs βA League Of Their Ownβ and I have zero clue what thatβs about, other than women.β
lol . . . No worries. Just chuckling because in the pantheon of baseball movies, that is probably, one of the best and most well known flicks.
I thought maybe you avoided it because of Madonna. π
Love Madonna Zum . . . Saw her put on a very physical and exhausting show in Las Vegas back in May of 2006 during her Confessions tour. Woman had unbelievable stamina and “ropes of steel” for arms.
Iβve never seen her in concert, but I think sheβs great in the movie version of βEvita.β
Tickets were over $250 per seat. GF at the time paid for them (in other words, I probably would not have gone had she not paid for the tickets). In any event, I was surprised by how good she was and the fact, she didn’t short change the crowd who paid to see her sing and dance. By the by, she was the first (or one of the first) adopters of hands free headsets – which allowed her to do all of her athletic dancing and gymnastics while singing. Pretty amazing to see.
Rosie OβDonnell is the reason I avoided it…
Blade, you had me curious so I looked it up..
The Inland Empire 66ers are a minor league Class A team of the Los Angeles Angels from San Bernardino. They play their home games at San Manuel Stadium π
Hey blade.
I’ve been to Brookings a handful of times.
Fishing trips up to the Rogue River (mouth is at Gold Beach, about 20 miles up north on 101), and Chetco River (mouth is at Brookings, a nice steelhead river).
Brookings is a nice little town just over the CA / OR border. Pretty quiet, some tourist gift and curios shops, and a couple of decent restaurants. Fred Meyer grocery.
Some nice to really nice housing up on the hills above town on the east side of the 101 highway — stayed up in a higher end rental home there for a few days some years ago with a big family group.
Unlike Denver metro, isn’t much to do up there, after all it’s less than 10K people. And you’re a long ways from nowhere both in N and S directions. Next biggest real burg is Crescent City, CA, about 25 miles south, not much there. Eureka is 100+ miles south. North of it to the WA border, not much other than the beautiful Oregon coast, and small coast towns like Gold Beach, Coos Bay, Newport, Lincoln City (touristy),Tillamook (cheese), and on to Astoria at the Columbia River.
Brookings weather — summer and fall is nice. If you like lots of salmon and steelhead fishing, and heavy winter rain and fog (no snow), you’ll really like it.
I’ve thought about Oregon like lots of other Californians. If I were to move there, I think it might be to the SW suburbs of Portland — lots of small towns out there in the Pinot Noir country, not too far from Portland. Higher housing prices than Brookings. Downside is Portland traffic is horrific when you go in.
Bend is also attractive on the East central side of the state, but it gets pretty red out there politically. Haven’t been there in years; but supposed to now be really good. Housing prices going up. Lotsa brew pubs…
Excellent info Tom. Thank you. Are you going to be available for a minor league game?
Speaking of Panic earlier, that play was reminiscent of his World Series play.
Gennett had a rough start to his Giants career.
Anderson is starting to really get on my nerves…
Without Dick in the lineup, and Yaz struggling, there goes the power in the lineup.
Safe!!!
Get a run anyway we can!!
Fat Crawford was motoring . . . zzzzzzzzzooooom.
Slater didβt run hard to first base. He might have had an HR.
Yaz smoked that bad boy!!!!
Most impressive bomb!!!
Yaz!!
472 foot HR!
Someone should track down Harmon Killebrew’s grandson…
I texted a Mets fan after Yaz HR beat the Mets that they needed to get a Killebrew on their roster.
Yaz picks up Belt. It’s f-ing Coors try and hit it in the air at least with man on 3b. Belt is just deteriorating before our very eyes.
Yeah Loo
472 ft HR off the 3rd deck facade!
I donβt even remember Carl bombing them that far?
Anderson may be dodging bullets but he’s through 5 with 4-2 lead. Not easy for anyone figuring out to pitch in this yard. Seems to have settled down a bit since early going.
One guy that always kills them is Arenado who fortunately isnβt doing it to them this year..
Here I am, checking into Giants web page for the score. This was the season that I was giving this shit up. Zman interest me. What can he do by year 3? !!!
Now interest builds
Light flickers in the tunnel
Zman on duty.
OSF
ah that’s too bad. Guy’s a pretty good ballplayer for them. Been a rough year to be Rockies fan.
Thatβs a tough one for Dahl, looks like a broken ankle..
that’s what I want to see out of Duggar. Pull the ball, with some authority.
I had low expectations for Duggar on his return to the team. Heβs helped pump some life into the team tonight.
I find it curious that Boch Let Anderson hit with a risp to end the inning. Then he pulls him after a lead off hit after only 72 pitches?
Then on cue Selman gives up his second bomb already in 2 appearances to cough up the lead.
Not certain AK, but Anderson hasn’t pitched beyond 5 innings in his last 6 starts, so maybe Boch was looking for any sign of him being tired (e.g., the hit), but yeah, it is curious.
Whatβs Moronta packing now 280lbs?
Wheels are falling off quickly..
Moronta dug his own grave this inning.
Instead of hitting the shower, he should hit the treadmill..
lulz.
when was last time he worked?
was that a snippet of Toots and Maytals Pressure Drop in the coors commercial?
wow looked like Posey got him and he did
WTF???????? Can’t believe they didn’t get him at the plate.
Great play Scooter&Poseyπ
wow nice job by Suarez of all people to work his way out of that. Hey all these young guys are gonna get a shot to come in and help the ML club win a game, or not. Jobs are there to be had if you can get people out.
True Willied,
And if they donβt grab the brass ring, theirs plenty of options in Sac. Plus most of these youngsters have options going back, so I see a revolving door going forward..
Good 1st hit going down and raking a double for Scooter π΄, too bad they couldnβt get one more to tie it up..
Kinda of a cheesy gift to Boch if you ask me..
Dyson got shelled again tonight for the Twins.
read somewhere he only got 3 hours sleep after trade.
Finally, the bunt works for Belt.
Damn.
Well that sucks!
Woo hoo long ass day. Just got home, golf, dinner, time for bed. blade, Brookings is on the coast my man, bend is probably 300 miles away. We are right in the center of Oregon right now. This entire state is fantastic, tho, you can’t go wrong anywhere here.
Let’s buy a big house out there where we can all live together…
Our house is a very very very very fine house, with 2 cats in the yard, life use to be so hard, but everything is easy cause of youπ
ACMH is my anthem…
?
Staring at the fire for hours and hours…
I feel the momentum for this building…
If the Giants finish .500 like they are now, I’d be very happy. Let’s see how young hitters and pitchers fare, get a good look at who can do what, and then makes moves accordingly in off season.
I still can’t get over Belt hitting a ground ball to 2b last night with Slater on 3b and 1 out. Every fly ball at Coors winds up on the warning track. Belt’s just part of the solution anymore.
Agree. That’s a reasonable goal (.500).
I almost wish that the Giants would have traded for right handed bat Jesus Aguilar. Instead the Rays picked him up. He was lights out last season, but is going quite bad at the moment. Also, defensively, he lacks the speed and mobility (of Belt) to play an outfield corner and is best-suited to first base. His range is limited but he doesnβt make many errors, and his arm is strong enough that the Indians have given him a few innings at third base now and then.
I just think Belt has never fulfilled his potential and new scenery would do him good. First base is a power position and in my opinion, we’ve been woefully shortchanged with Belt at that position. Walks/OBP are great, but many 1st baseman give you that (Aguilar too). Defense is overrated for that position. Yes, don’t be a liability, but a gold glove 1st baseman (which by the by, Belt has never won) isn’t the first asset I want for my 1st baseman. Consequently, I hope Belt is gone next season.
No one’s lost more homers in triples alley than Belt, but he’s really gotta go.
I think even he would agree…
Blade, that Sat game Aug17 with Jose Giants should be doable for me.
Fantastic Willie! It sounds like Unca and Chi are going. I would imagine that snarkk would be down with the game too. Looking forward to seeing you. Can you email me your telephone number via my email (blade3colorado@yahoo.com). Thanks in advance.
4 year 100 million extension for Draymond Green
Vince Vasquez a pitcher for the Phillies having to play LF with no other position players available gunned down a runner at the plate in the 14th inning!
Pretty awesome π the last time a pitcher had an assist in the outfield was in 1950!!
And Phils OF Roman Quinn took the loss.
Orioles claim Ty Blach..
How does everyone feel about cutting loose Austin? I really thought at one point he was a guy who could really help us with right handed pop, but it sounds like he had a horrible July when I didn’t get to watch too many games.
One Austin down, one to go.
I may have a nervous breakdown from all these Austins and Tylers and Tys.
They never work out for us.
I did like this guy way back…
Nice pull Loo!
I vaguely remember him back in 67-68?
Think Cline niched out a long career as a backup, probably needed a second job in the offseason since backups made chump change..
Absolutely, Kat. That’s back when teams carried lefty and righty pinch hitters, 3rd string catchers and late inning defensive specialists to back their 9 man pitching staff…
Dog..The problem was his pop disappeared and he was a liability in the field, granted itβs hard to be consistent without ABβs but when Boch would occasionally throw him a bone 𦴠he striking out to much, that was his main issue β feast are fathomβ and thatβs what eventually led to his release..
The Irish Potato Fathom?
or famine
Austins and Tylers and Tys,
Oh my!
Another mass shooting, another day in the U.S.
Out country has a serious sickness. The NRA has been infiltrated and funded by the Russians. Moscow Mitch will do nothing to help stop Russian intervention in our elections, and sewing discord in our society. The sickness doesn’t have its origins there, but it has a clear Russian assist that the current ruling party approves. Ronald Reagan wouldn’t even recognize what the Republicans have become– he wouldn’t be welcome in it…
Surely Reagan would have supported a ban on assault rifles to the public. The 19 year old shooter in Gilroy easily bought an assault rifle.
Itβs insanity, and the NRA does have hugely outsized influence on politicians.
Bush I bailed on the NRA due to Wayne La Pierre’s move to the lunatic fringe. It has gotten continually worse since he came aboard.
1. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
2. Mike Yastrzemski (L) LF
3. Pablo Sandoval (S) 3B
4. Stephen Vogt (L) C
5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
6. Scooter Gennett (L) 2B
7. Steven Duggar (L) CF
8. Austin Slater (R) RF
9. Madison Bumgarner (R) P
Belt needs to be platooned.
After you said that, I thought if him and Crawford were both platooned (which I see as appropriate), this entire line up would be made up of platooned players. π
Maybe they will give Panik a shot at 1st lol π
They said they wanted to field some balls at 1st&3rd.
Would he qualify as the shortest 1B in history?
I doubt it AK. He’s listed at 6’1″.
Mitch McConnell is a fucking stain on America. He and Paul Ryan sold out at the altar of abject greed and party over country.
Pete Rose played firstbase for a championship Phillies team. Iβm guessing heβs probably under 6 feet tall.
5’11”
I hate to bring him up, but Steve Garvey didn’t seem tall for a 1B.
5’10”
Mac wins again:
Garvey: 5’10”
Rose: 5’11”
Blade wins again…
Giant game is free on MLBTV…
