A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Team Stayed Together! YAAYYY!!!! Now What?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 2, 2019

As we enter August, we now might have to helplessly watch the slow implosion of our young pitchers. DRod is a mess, I’m not really talking about him. But Shaun Anderson and Black Shoes Beede, 2 guys who must pitch well if we are going to keep the dream of .700 ball alive, are headed into some uncharted dog days. Anderson pitched 141 innings in 2018 and 109.2 so far this year, Beede only 87 innings last year, 104.2 this year. The good news there is that the Giants have never been too keen on limiting young pitchers innings, although that could change with Young Z at the helm. We shall see.

I read Kat at the end of the last thread saying Pillar hasn’t had a day off since June 11. The way that guy plays? Absolutely criminal and negligent of Bochy to do that.

I thought the last trip through Colorado would go poorly and they swept. For some reason we are right back in Nepal. Pretty quick turnaround. This one looks ominous…..

If Gennett is live and ready to go, then what’s gonna go down with Panik? Panik btw loves Coors and has career numbers there. Extra IFs with Green Solano Sando, plus Belt Panik Craw and Gennett.

  2. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 2, 2019 at 7:57 am

I predicted DRod’s stuff wouldn’t last . . . Actually, he started going down hill during Sept/Oct of the 2018 season, with his WHIP at 1.42 . . . same as it is now (1.45) for the entire 2019 season. He has 5 pitches (good news), but 2 of his pitches are terrible (the sinker especially is dog shit and he uses it too much). Couple that with inexperience and not getting consistent playing time this season in the bigs, it’s no wonder he’s struggling. I think FanGraphs had an excellent article they put out in June or July of last season that explains all of the above.

Is it Paul or GH (Peter) who is going to the day game on the 14th? I will be there with a buddy and my parents. Give me a shout if that’s the case. Also, I am definitely going to see a San Jose game before they promote our stud prospects, Bart and Ramos. I will be in town through the 24th.

Good timing Blade. I have a small group of friends going so let’s touch base. Another flap fest limitation, I thought the bleachers seats were general seating so think buddy is getting tickets in the arcade area above right field wall where the first flap fest was this year…

I am scoring our tickets today on StubHub or similar (parents don’t understand the deal with tickets being sent to their phone, so I got stuck with this chore) . . . We’ll probably be 3rd base side, lower deck (shade preferably).

Willie, I was serious about a San Jose game. You possibly in? I think snarrk would go and perhaps others???? I wasn’t too excited about my parents asking me to go to a SF game one day after my arrival to the bay area. I just hate the traffic, etc., in the city, coupled with no time to relax after a flight. Whatever.

Well these next 10 days are make or break with 3 in Colorado and th en Nats and Phills 8n for 7 games…I think we need to win 6 of the 10 to be legit wild card contender. Splitting a 4 game series at home next weekend against the Phills will be unappealing. Take 3 of 4 from them and then split the first two series and we are still in the hunt…

  4. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 2, 2019 at 8:22 am

I think it’s the end of the road for Joe unfortunately, his bat and fielding have really gone downhill the past few seasons, with the addition of Gennett (and especially Dubon for later) Zman’s has clearly seen enough of his play and moving on,probably today he gets released. He will always have a special place in Giants history with β€œThe Toss” with just the glove to Crawford to complete a crucial DP against Hosmer and the Royals! Good luck Joe moving forward, some team will pick you for your experience for a playoff push going forward..

  5. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 2, 2019 at 8:23 am

Looks like Dubon scored what would be the winning run last night in the Sacto win. 1-4. Any reports we have on Rickard in CF in Sacto? Ex-Oriole? Can he maybe can give Pillar a spell? Crawford maybe to the DL for that roster spot. Shaw should probably be up with the Hurt Dick and kick Austin Powers to the curb for the roster spot.

  6. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 2, 2019 at 8:41 am

Panik has a special place in my heart as well. The DP you cited was easily one of the top 5 spectacular infield plays in all of World Series history. Even more impressed with his 2014 clutch play because he was a rookie. Fast forward to 2015, he followed it with career numbers and scored the Gold Glove and All Star game gig.

Yeah, I have to believe injuries took their toll on him. By the by AK, I also loved Duffy, who was called up in August of 2014 . . . That play in Game 2 of the 2014 National League Championship Series, where Duffy scored the tying run from second base on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning was special. Man, he was motoring. Sheesh, I was so pissed when they traded the Duffman and broke up the “homegrown” infield in 2016. To me that was “bad juju” and the beginning of the end of the Giants dynasty.

  7. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 2, 2019 at 8:59 am

Yeah Blade, Duffy’s mad dash was crazy good.
Players like the Duffman &Panik helped solidify this team with their hard nose play and passion.Letting the Duffster go was a huge mistake for team chemistry at the time, still miss him to and that raccoon 🦝 of a cat he had Skeeter?

Right, looking at the schedule, these are key series coming up, but really it’s *playoff baseball* every game from here on out for these guys. There are 3 ways this could go: collapse and sink out of contention; tread water in August and hope for a good September; or perhaps somewhat surprisingly torch the competition and take hold of the WC.Bets on which way this will go? If the 2nd or 3rd options are to happen, it’s likely going to take some of the new blood stepping up, with Pillar and A-Dick hurting. It would be great to see the newly arriving players plug in and play well. Bochy is going to earn his last 2 months at the helm….

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 2, 2019 at 11:16 am

I hope we can compete, but realistically? I think we shot our wad and we go south to our former mediocrity. Our hitting has been trending down for the last 2 weeks . . . I mean come on, we won quite a few games by 1-2 runs, many in extra innings. Seriously, how long did anyone think that run of luck would run? By the by, our run differential still sucks and that’s a stat I pay attention to. It’s the worst in the NL (teams not named the Pirates and Marlins).

Blade, Oregon is an awesome place! I live on the coast half way up. This is a state in two colors. Major parts blue as blue can get. Down in the southern part (never been south of Coos Bay) I’ve heard there are gorgeous places like Brookings. I’ve also heard that there is some rough country folks down in the Cave Junction area. North of where I live on the west of I-5 it is similar to country north of SF. Eastern part of state is sparse and at times quite conservative. Only one Republican US congressman in the state (Eastern side). Social programs like health programs are as good as any in the nation.

Thanks Stan. For whatever reason, I forgot you lived in Oregon. Yeah, agree with what you said about North of SF . . . I lived in Old Shasta (overlooks city of Redding) and I have been many times to Klamath Falls – both conservative enclaves. Radio sucks up there.

The latter game is probably the easiest one, e.g., little to no traffic and wait for it . . . It’s Italian night!!!! On Friday, it’s “A League Of Their Own” and I have zero clue what that’s about, other than women. Also, does anyone know where/who is the “Inland Empire???” No idea where that team is from (Fresno???).

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 2, 2019 at 4:18 pm

I know that, but the SJ site doesn’t make the connection. Essentially, there’s going to be fireworks and a Bruce Bochy bobble head giveaway if you buy the expensive tickets. Huh? What does that have to do with “A League Of Their Own?”

Conversely, the Italian night has Italian food and the Giants will wear special jerseys (Italian names or numbers?) that attendees can bid on. At least that has some connection.

In any event, I was surprised by how good she was and the fact, she didn’t short change the crowd who paid to see her sing and dance. Hey blade.
I’ve been to Brookings a handful of times.
Fishing trips up to the Rogue River (mouth is at Gold Beach, about 20 miles up north on 101), and Chetco River (mouth is at Brookings, a nice steelhead river).
Brookings is a nice little town just over the CA / OR border. Pretty quiet, some tourist gift and curios shops, and a couple of decent restaurants. Fred Meyer grocery.
Some nice to really nice housing up on the hills above town on the east side of the 101 highway — stayed up in a higher end rental home there for a few days some years ago with a big family group.
Unlike Denver metro, isn’t much to do up there, after all it’s less than 10K people. And you’re a long ways from nowhere both in N and S directions. Next biggest real burg is Crescent City, CA, about 25 miles south, not much there. Eureka is 100+ miles south. North of it to the WA border, not much other than the beautiful Oregon coast, and small coast towns like Gold Beach, Coos Bay, Newport, Lincoln City (touristy),Tillamook (cheese), and on to Astoria at the Columbia River.
Brookings weather — summer and fall is nice. If you like lots of salmon and steelhead fishing, and heavy winter rain and fog (no snow), you’ll really like it.
I’ve thought about Oregon like lots of other Californians. If I were to move there, I think it might be to the SW suburbs of Portland — lots of small towns out there in the Pinot Noir country, not too far from Portland. Higher housing prices than Brookings. Downside is Portland traffic is horrific when you go in.
Bend is also attractive on the East central side of the state, but it gets pretty red out there politically. Haven’t been there in years; but supposed to now be really good. Housing prices going up. Lotsa brew pubs…

If the Giants finish .500 like they are now, I’d be very happy. Let’s see how young hitters and pitchers fare, get a good look at who can do what, and then makes moves accordingly in off season.
I still can’t get over Belt hitting a ground ball to 2b last night with Slater on 3b and 1 out. Every fly ball at Coors winds up on the warning track. Belt’s just part of the solution anymore.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 3, 2019 at 8:58 am

      Agree. That’s a reasonable goal (.500).

I almost wish that the Giants would have traded for right handed bat Jesus Aguilar. Instead the Rays picked him up. He was lights out last season, but is going quite bad at the moment. Also, defensively, he lacks the speed and mobility (of Belt) to play an outfield corner and is best-suited to first base. His range is limited but he doesn’t make many errors, and his arm is strong enough that the Indians have given him a few innings at third base now and then.

I just think Belt has never fulfilled his potential and new scenery would do him good. First base is a power position and in my opinion, we’ve been woefully shortchanged with Belt at that position. Walks/OBP are great, but many 1st baseman give you that (Aguilar too). Defense is overrated for that position. Yes, don’t be a liability, but a gold glove 1st baseman (which by the by, Belt has never won) isn’t the first asset I want for my 1st baseman. Consequently, I hope Belt is gone next season.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 3, 2019 at 9:06 am

No one’s lost more homers in triples alley than Belt, but he’s really gotta go.
I think even he would agree…

Out country has a serious sickness. The NRA has been infiltrated and funded by the Russians. Moscow Mitch will do nothing to help stop Russian intervention in our elections, and sewing discord in our society. The sickness doesn’t have its origins there, but it has a clear Russian assist that the current ruling party approves. Ronald Reagan wouldn’t even recognize what the Republicans have become– he wouldn’t be welcome in it…

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 3, 2019 at 3:11 pm

Surely Reagan would have supported a ban on assault rifles to the public. The 19 year old shooter in Gilroy easily bought an assault rifle.
It’s insanity, and the NRA does have hugely outsized influence on politicians.
