A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Finally, A Man Emerges

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 16, 2019

Everyone was talking about what an opportunity last night was for DRod and that was definitely true. He took advantage of it. Before the game, Krukow did his usual spiel about how his struggles this season were “100% mechanical” and that it’s been a greater challenge *getting right* because of his shuttling back and forth from MLB to AAA and the fact that he’s been in the bullpen and missing the routine of being a starting pitcher. I can support some of that. The other piece is that he’s just a marginal guy who has to be totally focused up every start with his *best stuff* with him every time he toes the rubber. And that’s not the end of the world if this is who he is. At least he can give us a start like this now and again. He’s been the only youngster to step up this August so we need to give this guy his due for last night’s performance.

Cueto was hitting 93 last night in his rehab start. That shimmy is getting closer and closer  to returning and I’ve just about taken home that ten bones from Diggity….

You forgot to mention your affirmation of Mac’s VMI comment . . . Consequently, I like DRod’s outstanding game last night, but how much of his start is attributable to the Snakes being flat after playing in Sherpaville???

Some for sure but beede had a shot last week at a bad hitting vmi team and he got raked

Real nice pitching performance by D-Rod, yes it had to be frustrating being on the yo-yo bus 🚌, but the Giants were right:”It’s time to put up are shut up” and hopefully the message has sunk in with that outstanding job and he’s here to stay, cause they need that from the back of the rotation!

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 16, 2019 at 9:29 am

i didn’t confirm this at fangraphs but Kruk was saying that when things were bad this season the only pitch DRod felt confident throwing was the change up. That approach presents obvious problems……

Seeing a lot of chatter about bringing Cueto back ASAP/early which I would be a mistake.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 16, 2019 at 11:59 am

Coming from the Giants? Or just in general. I’ve pretty much heard September as the go-time.

Doesn’t Cueto need to pitch in August to be eligible for post-season play?

  6. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 16, 2019 at 12:02 pm

Bring Cueto back. Shit have him take a hitter today. I need to lock that ten spo up before he falls down a flight of stairs or some shit.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 16, 2019 at 12:08 pm

Yes, I’ve been saying for a while that Cueto has to be on the active 40 on Aug 31 to be eligible for, ahem, the post season…

  8. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 16, 2019 at 12:09 pm

Hey Boch loves his Vets and stated Shimmy will pitch down the stretch and with the uncertainty of the back of the rotation it will be a done deal.
And yes I believe he has to be on the roster by Aug 31 to be eligible for the improbable playoff run..

Pitching is pitching. Whether facing A, AA, AAA, or major league guys. He’ll be on a pitch count and will be watched closely. They aren’t really ‘rushing’ his return, just changing the opponent.

Anybody think Duggar isn’t long for this team after 2 shoulder injuries? I say no..

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 16, 2019 at 2:27 pm

Agree AK. Besides being injury prone, he’s “just another guy” stat wise. Pillar was brought in by Mr. Z (thank God for us) because he knew immediately that Duggar was not the answer in CF, despite SabEvans “crowning” him the future CF.

It’s a big series this weekend between Atlanta and the Dodgers, as far as Atlanta trying to prove they’re ready to be a challenge to the Dodgers in the playoffs. Or if they’re just going to get rolled in the playoffs again by the Dodgers or somebody else. Atlanta needs to get past the “we’re just happy to be in the playoffs” phase.

the only thing I remember about Leake is that as soon as the Giants were out of it he threw like 8 innings of shut out ball. When I get home I might look that game log up to see how close I got to that guess.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 16, 2019 at 4:12 pm

Beltran did a similar thing in ‘11. Did nothing to help the team as they sank in the West, and then started hitting when they were about 10 games out.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 16, 2019 at 4:15 pm

Beltran’s final Giants stats look good, but they were mostly accomplished during the “garbage time” of the last month.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 16, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Agree Zumie, Beltran I expected more out of him,not a garbage time to pad his stats. But now I look at the trade Zach Wheeler is more just hype then overall production,42-37 in 5 years with the Mets and now 30? with injuries setting in, no be shakes for me..

What is nice about being home besides taking in an actual game, but to actually sit (ok half asleep for parts of it) in front of a TV and watch a 7-0 victory from 2nd pitch (ok, thought the game was starting at 6:45) to the last pitch…when I am back in Virginia land, it is hard to concentrate on an entire Giants game without wife and children distractions or the 3 hour time difference to stay actually awake. Was like growing up but mostly listened to those games on KNBR and often every pitch.. go Giants…Magic #13…

  20. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 16, 2019 at 5:40 pm

They should go with that relief starter thing when Cueto comes up and have Cueto pitch to the bottom of the opposing lineup in the 3rd and then maybe get 3 innings out of him.

I glanced at a couple of bottom feeder teams in the AL and a couple of vet pitchers who could get conceivably released and the only two who jumped out at me were Mike Montgomery or Ross Detwiler. Either night be more serviceable. Beede might be at the end of his better days this year…
