Goodbye, Captain….
Finally, mercifully, this day is here. Yesterday Zumiee asked for any memories from the 2017/2018 season. I struck out as I’m sure all of you did, too. But 2019? Maybe it’s because it’s still so fresh (or raw depending on your attitude) but this season will leave (the stain?) of many memories. The Yaz bomb in Boston has to be at the top.
For me, the Pillar grand slam vs the Padres, even in a game they horribly ended up losing, was a huge memory. I was sitting in the SF airport waiting on a late plane and doing a slow burn at the *masses* of Flap Nation who loathed 1.0 and all of a sudden he…..hits a grand slam. The next day he had 4 more RBI’s and his march to the top of the leader board of nearly every SF offensive category had begun….
My favorite Bochy memory? Probably his greatest move as a manager was turning Timmy into a reliever in 2012. That was a watershed move at the time and the risk of disruption to the team was enormous. But Lincecum accepted the role and the rest is history. Bruce Bochy is the greatest and most decorated manager we’ve ever had. I love him and will salute him whenever I see his big head pop up on my tv screen. But it’s time for him to go. There’s nothing wrong with that, everything ends sooner or later.
Anyway, this season was rough. It sucks because baseball is so long and if you’re not going anywhere it just feels like a waste, another year away from the glory of 3 in 5 and another year closer to…..who knows what.
I need the winter to kick in so that I can get romantic about the game again. The months will tick off, Chi will post that poem about that dude staring out the window waiting for the snow to melt or the leaves to bloom or some shit and I’ll get excited about the season starting. But this morning, right now, I’m choking on the *dreck* and drowning in the misery.
End this season already.
Yaz, Pillar, and also Dick’s amazing month, were the season. Webb was a nice story at the end. Dubon shows some promise.
The season was lost by the old core. The old core is so done.
Dick hitting that mammoth bomb past us at the flapalooza will also be a great memory
I’d say there’s at least an 80% chance that the old core will all be in the starting line-up on opening day 2020…
of course. And we have that double top secret change Posey is enacting. Can’t wait for that!
I think the Giants have upwards of $200 million total still committed to Belt, Crawford, Longoria, Posey and Cueto. Not even counting Smarj anymore for the the one year he has left…
The memory of Bochy field dressing to the ultimate embarrassment to Donny 2 step will always be epic to me!
And this year outstanding play goes to Pillar climbing the wall all contorted to make that top 5 ESPN catch was incredible!!
Donny field dressing??? Was this the Mattingly bonehead move?
Yes it was GH..
Boch made Donny look like a whiny child who had his lunch money taken from him from a bully..
Pregame stuff starts at 10 Pacific Time on the Giants’ flagship station.
Tributes keep pouring in for Bochy.
Hunter Pence very nice honoring him.
And yes even former mayor Gavin Newsom donning Giants uni and telling about the 2010 game ball Boch gave him after the W/S championship he shows with utmost pride..
Of course this Giant team let it come down to last day of the season last day at least in Bochy’s managerial career and should be his last game as manager if other teams have any sense and of course the last game against the hated Flodgers for Boch to get his last win and get him ot .500…cosmic karma planets coming into alignment to send him off with a win and .500…will this team step up???
Damm hope so! You sure want to win your last game, and against the hated Dodgers it’s the most satisfying feeling to retire with!
So pull up your big boy pants Giants and get Bochy the win!!
And if there was one memory from the previous two seasons it would have been that McCutchen home run…
A good one
Thoughts on thos idea…SI has a story on the Cuban player stuck in the Red Sox system Rusney Castillo…he is 32 but likely will still be buried at AAA to avoid a luxury tax hit which is really one of the dumbest baseball moves I can ever remember.
He is owed $13.5 million and then a free agent…confident Sox could be talked into paying part of that salary or take less back. Would be a low-risk Farhan type of deal…the other interesting outside the box thought would be see how willing would the Cubs be to part with Kris Bryant. He has two more arb eligible years so not bound by a huge albatross contract for him or Castillo…Cubs have some big contracts they will be needing to wrap up for people like Baez Rizzo and I could see them wanting to now keep Castellanos. Long shot but would be two valuable pieces…
Tough break for the guy, but Boston has shown they don’t care about money if the team will be better (Panda). Castillo OPS in 400 plate appearances is .679 He was up most of 2015 and hit 5 homers. He will be 33 next July.
2 trips was awesome!
My Best Bochy moment? Knowing ( unlike Dusty with Ortiz removing him too early and Mark Pryor next year, took him out too late ) when to ride the best.
We won 3 WS and a huge part was his mastory of of the pitching late in playoff games. Timmy completing the game against ATL to Bumgarner in 14. He was the best!
Yeah Bochy’s true legacy will be how he handled the pitching staff, he was a master during the 3 championships always making the right moves at the right time!! Nobody was better imo..
Joe Maddon anyone?
no.
Jenkins makes a good point re: Bochy being able to rally troops–every 3/5 playoff series Giants were either underdogs or not big favorites and they won them all.
yes, home record is awful. They neither hit nor pitch very well on the whole; though night we went Anderson was great and Dick rose to the occasion, and even Posey hit one off top of the wall. Another plus for Pillar is what he has done at the O, hitting more bombs at home than on road iirc.
still, Giants road record is very good as opposed to them getting regularly hammered previously. they’re 42-39 and only 3 teams in NL have better record. All 3 of them LA WAS and ATL are in playoffs.
Btw watching college/pro football and getting back into coaching b-ball, sept baseball I just don’t care about even playoffs.
However–great to see Charlie Morton’s name come up again as projected starter here vs. A’s. Brings back good 2017 WS memory, as that was only game I watched.
Maybe they should’ve started Bum.
That went well.
Can we have a mulligan?…
Too bad they have such a crap balls/strikes umpire for this one.
I look forward to the days of the robot umpire…
Last game. All the pitchers are available.
Time to pull Rodriguez before this turns embarrassing…
Has the Kruk&Kuip duo start the, well if it we get a guy on base we’re back in this one??
So Loo, what am I winning in my self created Loo Pool when I picked Boch would end up with 2003 wins???? This start of this game is laughable and maybe fitting…
Maybe just forfeit this to get on with the Bochy orgasmic celebration…
Crawford with the DP grounder.
Criminy, is there any way Zman can deal this guy and put Dubon at SS?…
So it was made official this morning: the Cubs are dumping Maddon. How quickly in sports things can change. From genius status to not so genius status.
I’m guessing the Mets and Phillies are set to dump.
If the Yanks don’t make the World Series, the clock is ticking on Boone.
That Giants inning was brutal.
Giants playing like they’ve got a meet immediately after the game with a group of hookers…
What a shitstorm way to end the season.Tanking 3 straight to a Dodger team who was just tuning up for the playoffs in meaningless games, yet the Giants showed no heart to compete..
Awesome! Mad Bum hitting. A homer would be amazing.
Disagree re Boone They had the most injury filled season maybe ever for a 100 win team. Likely manager of the year…If he is fired we should get him
Oh, I didn’t mean necessarily fired this off-season, but on the hot-seat heading into next season.
They lose to Astros ( and lets hope they do because they are the best matchup for the Dodgers and will have home field) no shame in that..
Kershaw v Bum.
Best part of the game.
Nice memory, if Bum ends up elsewhere…
Very cool of Kershaw to throw all fastballs to Bum. That was classy, and gave Bum a good AB.
and W smith (a rookie no less) walking to the mound so the ovation could last longer. Listening on the radio, but kershaw doffed his cap to Bochy after the lineout. Class act. I hate that guy a lot as a Dodger, and revel in his palyoff failures, but he is a class act as a ball player, and does tons for charity.
Kershaw is actually one of my least hated Dodger, and I hate them all!
And his favorite player growing up was Will Clark and he wears his number 22 in his honor, so that’s pretty cool 😎
This is a little better memory for Boch and Bum:
Yeah Bum looks like he can easily handle a horse over a dirt bike..
That long ovation he got today and him milking it makes me think he’s gone for sure🤔
Today’s game needs a fork stuck in it.
Just started watching. Fitting that we absolutely suck in our last home series. The core should be ashamed.
And DFAed. Hard to eat 200 mill though.
Like I said though. Trade Belt. Cut Crawfish. They have to start somewhere. 2 of these guys off the roster before opening day 2020 and I’ll be happy with the progress. Posey is stuck here. Longo and Smargle and Cueto may provide at least a modicum of decentness.
“I walk the line” should be our theme song.
The Cubs started Holland today in a game that had meaning for the Cards and Brewers.
Holland: 2 innings/7 ERs.
just peeked in on the score…Jesus, nothing but dreck and misery….
Dodgers literally aren’t even really trying this series and they’ve got us 17-2….so far.
Giants in this series have played like they’re testing a new class of barbiturates.
Putridbarbital…
Pirates dumped Hurdle.
I’m laughing my ass off.
This day is really going off the rails.
Flemm is flaming Giants PR staff.
They were in the stands live filming the winner of a new car as part of fan appreciation.
Winning woman fan stands up on camera, wearing:
Dodger uni …
Have to ask why would he stay? SF era he was so critical in is over. Very close to Bochy and he is gone. Core players not good. Rebuild gonna take a few years. He gets offered 3 years? Then he will be ready to go again just as we are (hopefully) getting good again. If rebuild doesn’t work, or takes longer then the fans will be mad we paid too much for another old / core guy….. OR he could go to a team closer to his home, play for a better team closer to winning, and be paid more that he will likely get here.
and..I agree with Chuck…Craw must go. Posey can’t (hero), and has a sliver of hope he will be better. Others just have a small chance but some chance of being respectable. Craw must go
PS I am SOOO glad this game is meaningless. Dodgers have had SO many seeing eye singles today it is sick.
If I were Bum, I am so outta here it’s not even close…
he’s fucked after we slap that tag on him. It’s too bad, he earned better treatment than that but if he’s set on leaving, and I think he is, he’s kinda doing this to himself.
He should have demanded they trade him before the deadline. That would have freed him up totally in free agency. Maybe he did. Maybe he wanted to end the season with the Giants. I really would love to know exactly what went on re: Bum around the trade deadline. I dunno. It’s turned out badly for all concerned, IMO. He could be on a team right now heading for post season, in line for total free agency. Giants would have had some kind of young player(s) in the system in return. Instead, getting humiliated 9-0 to the Doghairs on the final day…
Have a great off season y’all.
You, too! Stick around though. We have anti-Dodger playoff games happening.
9-0. The score you literally get for not showing up, and forfeiting.
See my 1:02 pm…
Ha! Good call.
If this is not the most embarrassing Doghair series held at Oracle Park since it opened, it has to be close to it…
uh, last year LA , in the final series of the year, swept the Giants and outscored them 28-7, beating them 15-0 in the final game….
Glad I forgot…
Lincecum is in the house. And Wilson is looking like Jay, of Jay and Silent Bob.
Dollars to donuts Belt will have knee surgery within a couple of weeks.
There goes the trade market until ST when he can show he actually can run.
As to the other core members, let the trade negotiations and discounts begin…
Nice job, well done, Panda…
He wasn’t going anywhere this offseason anyway. Not with the numbers he put up.
Highlights of the season?
1. The hot streak in June/July.
2. Lil’ Yaz in Boston.
3. Pillar and Vogt.
4. Dubon showing promise.
5. Uh, I’m thinking.
Lowlights:
1. The rest of the season not #1 above.
2. These last three games…
this is an insane catch
Geez, are they going to introduce the rosters for the last 13 years?…
Including all the cruddy players on the early Bochy teams in SF.
Highlight #1? Flapapalooza, hands down.
Great night and it kicked off the glimmer of July hope that kept us from 100 losses. Drinks at Pete’s Tavern afterwards.
I’ll drink to that ! …
Timmeh ! …
wish I could see this, I’m driving. I’ll catch the highlights later.
It’s worth seeing. Great memories coming back.
Ha! Bonds taking Roberts’ Dodgers hat off was funny. Roberts took it well.
Timmy gets the rock star welcome. Well….he is one. 🙂
Then Baer speaks and speaks and sucks the energy out of the building.
When Baer started to speak I was done!
Looking for a chair to throw at him..
Great speech by Peavy, except I could have sworn he said “We’re all products of our race.” I know he meant baseball lineage, but that’s not a good way of saying it.
After the lousy three games vs. the Dodgers, that was kind of cathartic having Roberts come out and join his old Giants teammates, and Barry grabbing his Dodgers cap and throwing it, and Roberts laughing. Great moment.
Bochy went out in style.
Great speech, he hit it out of the park…
Great speech by Bochy.
Man, my eyes watered up a bit.
Well didn’t see it but there were some great speeches today.
Listened on knbr driving around, not the same but some very emotional moments
I had to drop a table off at someone’s house for a big party they’re having tonight and literally right as bochy is done speaking I get out of the car and have to talk to 4 people loitering in the driveway. Emotional, felt like an idiot
And that family is a bunch of red Sox fans they couldn’t have given a shit about the bochy speech
When Scutaro was introduced he re-enacted this awesome moment.

And he brought the rain with him. Awesome!
My fav Bochy moment of managerial brilliance was ’10 NLCS against Philly after Sanchez meltdown: bringing in lefty after lefty (Affeldt, Lopez, MadBum) in what seemed like an endless stream of lefties. Phils were so done, and the 3 in 5 was about to begin… And I just happened to be visiting the folks and watching with my Dad, longtime Phils fan…
I can’t find Bochy’s speech. Can someone post or lead me in the right direction?
At this site:

I’m not crying, you’re crying…Thanks Zum. Great speech by Boch.
All I know is without Boch, those teams go no where. I will die a happy man, I got to see not 1 but 3 WS. This is Bochy’s day, don’t care about 2019 right now. Just as surly as it has taken the Niners time to find the right coach, it may take time and a lot of it to find a head coach for the Giants, I would not want to be the next coach, some HUGE shoes to fill. Tip my cap to Boch and give him the knowing head dude nod, you were the best.
Nice touch, an Honorary Clint…
well said.
“Torture is better than going home.” Love it! Invoking Lou Gehrig was pretty sweet as well.
Awesome speech by Boch.
Poignant end to 2019. Another 2019 highlight? Us all being here for another season. Thanks again Craig for continuing to give us this place, and keeping it going! Cheers to you my friend!
It’s supposed to be a celebration….
Mays sounded great.
That same distinct voice.
Even though I had no idea WTF he meant…
Happy trails, Boch…
KC’s Ned Yost’s final game today, too.
Lots of MLB managerial openings out there for aspiring managers.
Four different managers won the World Series from 2013-16. They’re all out — for now.
Kapler fired in 4…3….2….
