Waiting Game
Nats been off a while. Remember when that happened to the Tigers in 2012? Didn’t work out so good for them.
Houston is also a significantly better team.
Washington has a tough road to climb but if they win tonight who knows?

My choice for key player is Bregman. If he has a good series, it’s over. If he struggles, anything can happen.
I’m interested in seeing what Alvarez does. He was absolutely lost at the plate up till now. Let’s see if he can get it going , if he does he can carry team by himself
I’m alright with either team winning. I like the Astros, but have sympathy for the Nats having never won a World Series.
By the by, teams have until five days after the conclusion of the World Series to tender an upcoming free agent with a qualifying offer, and players then have 10 days to decide whether to accept or reject the offer.
As one of the top starting pitchers on the market and a safe bet for a lucrative multi-year deal, Bumgarner is a lock in my opinion to receive and decline a qualifying offer. That means if he winds up signing elsewhere during the offseason, the Giants will receive draft pick compensation. Just my take, but the Giants are not a charity, especially now, considering that they are one of the “dregs” of the league. Yeah, right, I’m sure their thinking is, “Let’s eliminate a potential draft choice by not giving MadBum a QO.” Not going to happen.
Also, did anyone actually read the MLB analysis article Flav posted yesterday in the link? Basically, the article gave reasons to sign Bum (mostly his past history) and reasons not to sign him (what he did last season).
As mentioned on the last thread, I am leaning Nats (past Expos let-down via Rick Monday), that they have not won a WS, and also I am a NL guy (again, exception would be if the bums were representing the NL). But if the Stros win, so be it. I like their team, and how they have built it. And how can you not cheer for Altuve.
Where I see the distinct advantage to Houston is in the bullpen. Above all else, I hope to see a good series. Tight games, lots of suspense…let’s play seven.
Blade – I did read that article that Flav posted. Good read. Thanks, Flav.
I (along with a few other flappers) see the Giants offering Bum something like 3/75, or so. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes-out.
The analysis is interesting but nothing earth shattering or new. By some metrics Bum did OK (K rate) by others (especially on road) not so much. he is learning how to pitch with less of fastball and I believe he is enough of a competitor to be able to figure that out, ala Opie. I don’t discount those home numbers either–LF for RHs is not near as difficult as hitting as LH at the O, as we all know. So argument is how much does he have left, for how long. Since pens and metrics rule these days I can see him with 2-3 good (under 4.00 ERA) years left, as durable 5-6 inning guy. Sure were times Bochy left him in too long and different mgr. might not do that.
The QO argument tho I can’t buy. NO team is giving up the comp pick and signing him if Giants do this. I think that is 100% for certain as way FAs his age are viewed today by GMs. Any team interested will just wait until June after the draft and make an offer then. This is what happened last year to Keuchel etc., and I can’t see he is so valuable a team will jump right in before that.
Agree 100% on the QO aspect, WillieD.
So exactly how does the QO work?(Isn’t it like 10 days after the Series the auction begins??
Can the Giants only offer Bum the highest set QO which for sure would get turned down are can they throw down say 3/95 maybe a 4th year option and see if he just wants to be a loyal Giant for life..
I would think for sure Z at minimum wants that high draft pick, he would be a fool not to, so if no team is willing to give up that precious pick, is Bum still obligated to the Giants going into ST?when does that comp pick end?is their a time limit??
Yeah I screwed the pooch going with Ertz and really should have been taken another low owned player like Goedert but I already had Dorsett and Tavon Austin (from Sunday’s game) so I didn’t want to take too much risk with low floor players.
Listen to me talking like I know what the fuck I am doing.
How did this end up here? I thought I was responding to Flavor.
Reply fail! 🙂
If they QO Bummie, that would piss me off no end. He took a VERY team friendly deal back in 2013, and has pitched his ass off. Yeah, he fucked up on his dirt bike, and I’m sure he still feels bad about that, and that plays a part in what I think will happen going forward, but after seeing what happened to Keuchel and Crabman this season, the Giants would be seriously fucked to do that to Bummie..
Granted I don’t want anything even 4 years, but I’d rather they do that then fuck him over that badly and watch him languish on the sidelines till May. He deserves better than that.
I would lose all respect for Farhan and the Giants should thy go that route.
Agree, Charlie.
Astros in a bit of a PR mess right now. Will be interesting to see if FOX mentions it tonight.
Prolly not. Osuna’s pretty fucking toxic, and the clown GM is a total ass hat, but no one seems to care.
Posted about the same time Willied, so you might have answered my question. So Bum could end up being a Kuechel ,Kimball scenario? That would suck with all he’s done for the organization, but still it’s a “Business First” and any orq would do the same thing!
I personally think Bum has a lot more left in the tank, especially with the 2 freak injuries that cut a huge amount of innings off his arm.The guy is durable,200 innings,200 K’s a year gives you 7+ innings a start, saving a BP every start he makes and he’s left handed always a plus in baseball and especially facing the heavy left handed Dogpile LU..
Hey it’s not my money but he’s still valuable, and for shits and giggles get in the hunt for Crawdaddy’s brother in law Gerrit Cole!
SP of Cole,Bum,Cueto,Shark (lots of inning eaters then the hopefully continue-progress of Beede,Webb,Anderson &Rodriguez maybe bullpen use for some and the pitching stays solid..
Had an exiting yet disappointing finish in my DraftKings Sun-Mon primetime contest. My taking Ertz at TE instead of Goedert was the difference in me winning $40 instead of $10,000. Always the bridesmaid and never the bride.
Yikes. Ertz has been pretty underwhelming this year. 2 gm nba slate tonight + MLB showdown gotta give you a chance to rebound, eh?
Jeez Wilco that’s too bad. Wentz is way off this year and maybe defenses realize Ertz is the guy to concentrate on and make it more difficult.
Hey saw story UT b-ball supposed to be pretty good this season, Baylor too. It would be cool to see game out there. my friend’s oldest was at Purdue but I could never convince her to leave Cupertino and visit him during winter.
In this day of analytic dominance I’m sure every team knows exactly what happens to every one of Bum’s batted balls, where they go how hard they are hit off what pitch what would be HR in their park yada yada. I’d bet there would still be takers if QO wasn’t a factor and Giants couldn’t work out an extension.
Yeah, I think I saw where Baylor men open up conference play at home against Texas. I may have to check that out.
My wife got my son and I tickets to the Baylor-Iowa State game a couple weeks ago thru her work. Gorgeous stadium with open end overlooking the Brazos River. Not a bad seat in the whole place. Crowd was very tame (more like a Cal or Stanford crowd) compared to a UT home game and certainly nothing like an SEC crowd.
very cool that’s great you and son went. Texas b-ball on cbs site was #25, one of 4 teams in from Big 12 Kansas T Tech and Baylor. Rated top conference with ACC in all of mens b-ball.
By the Stros PR thing are you referring to Ozuna thing where guy told all these women they are glad to have him?
Yeah, one of the three women there had a domestic violence bracelet on, and for some reason the GM felt he needed to scream in their faces how fucking glad he was that they got him.
The inference of course is that domestic violence is so easy to overlook if you can play baseball at a high level. Don’t know if you saw the vid of Osuna beating up his girlfriend in a stairwell when he was in AAA a couple years ago.
The GF split the country and didn’t press charges. So no harm no foul. For him anyway.
Unca, or any other Flapper that follows the 49ers . . . I usually tune into CNBC while trading stocks and just caught the interview with Al Guido (Mafia background???), President of 49er Business Operations. Anywho, he’s indicating that all season ticket prices will go up by $20 next season, in lieu of including free access to all food and beverages (sans liquor). Sounds like a great deal. He also indicated that the stadium sells out each game and they have a 98% retention rate for season ticket holders. True?
He was also pressed on the fact that the game action lasts 30 minutes, but the game itself – with penalties, commercial breaks, anthem, time outs, etc. – lasts nearly 4 hours. In effect, he was asked what the league is doing about improving the fan experience at the actual games (since many teams are apparently not filling their stadiums anymore)? Does anyone actually go to any games here? Or has season tickets? Some of my cousins go, as well as a few friends. Biggest complaint I hear is traffic congestion and the sun beating down on half the stadium for most of the game.
Manny Sanders, that’s a good pick up. He doesn’t have to be a real #1, just #1 for the niners
The behavior of the Astros assistant GM is completely unacceptable. He needs to be banned from attending games for a while. The Astros need to do the right thing.
They need to fire him or at the very least do the leave of absence thing like the Giants did with Baer. Chuck’s right though, I don’t think FOX mentions it tonight. I could be wrong.
It makes me root for the Nationals.
They were all over the story on MLB live saying it was disgraceful and totally disrespectful for the 3 woman and that Major League Baseball is investigating the situation.Oszuna is a scumbag to start with his past woman abuse and to have this asst GM come out and justify getting him and making a point of looking at the females and raising his voice so all could hear him is just unprofessional and this clown should be fired..Also isn’t this the second incident with the Stros this year, with them banning a reporter from the clubhouse cause Verlander didn’t like the guy reporting negative stuff about him??
Yeah I’m pulling for the Nats now too Zumie..
The Astros tried to claim it didn’t happen, but were exposed as liars. Scumbag behavior by the Astros brass.
Charlie (Unca) your thoughts on the Sanders trade to the 49ers. Shipped 3rd and 4th round picks for Sanders and a 5th round pick. Not sure the Niners got the best end of this deal, but would like to hear your, and other Flappers’ thoughts.
I’m fine with it. We keep trying to draft/sign WRs and it hasn’t been working. He may not be a true #1 but he’s as #1 as we have. We are gonna have a thin draft next year, though. But hey, they need something now, so I’m good.
I really think Hurd is going to be the real deal. Too bad he fucked up his back. Taylor is OK as a slot guy, Goodwin is fine as a speed guy, but neither of them can stay on the field. And Deebo is hurt too. Of course Sanders is coming off an achilles and an ankle surgery, but he’s playing well so far this year. They have decent guys, just no one who stands out.
And Sanders prolly has a 50/50 chance of staying after this year, so the price is a bit steep. Still and all, I like the move.
Cool. Good perspective.
Blade, games are not terrible, but fuck, it is expensive. I took my son to the Pittsburgh game and got seats on the shady side of the field (mandatory at Levi’s, at least in September), and it was fine. The sun that day was brutal and I’d say it was easily in the mid-90s on the sunny side.
$360 for 2 tickets on the 10 yard line, and $50.00 to park. Couple dogs, couple beers for each, a popcorn and you are looking at another $90.00. With the team now 6-0, I’d think the prices will start creeping higher.
Food and beer is easy enough to get, and the bathrooms are big enough to get through pretty fast, and the game was fun, but the stadium is really bland. You look at new stadiums around the league and it’s like a spaceship just landed. Our looks like a 5th grade erector set project.
I have a ‘secret’ place to park, but I didn’t get there in time and ended up having to pay for parking. It is like 2 stops down on the VTA. My wife has 4 friends from LA that want to come up for a game, but that would be a doozy to work out. And I’ve yet to go to a Monday Night game. The traffic has to be monumentally awful for that.
Thanks!
This was pretty cool though.
Pretty cool. Look like F-5s…maybe outta Beale.
I would of preferred the younger taller bigger Sanu over Sanders( freakin Pats always swoop in and grab a need, especially with Gordon out ) but yes the 49ers are shaky with their core of receivers not healthy are really just unreliable! Still wished they drafted my fantasy stud WR Terry McLaurin, he’s the real deal, speed, great hands, great route runner, 5 TD’s stuck on a shit team to boot pretty impressive!!
My son was talking up McLaurin before the draft. Boy, was he right.
Taco 🌮 Tuesday Night!
How appropriate to start the World Series Tonight!
And my prop pick for the first stolen base and free Taco Bell Taco is… Nationals Trea Turner
Zion Williamson’s NBA career is off to a roaring start: out 8 weeks with a sore knee.
Kerr says Thompson probably won’t play this season.
if they somehow don’t have any injuries and are in it with 6 weeks to go, I guarantee you Klay will be back. If they are out of it, which is definitely possible if Curry goes down, there’s no reason to bring Klay back. Rest up, see ya next season
The Warriors are beat up already. They are gonna struggle early. The NBA in its current configuration is just too damn long. They could lose 12 games, and an entire round of playoffs.
Yeah, right,. I know.
lqtm…
While your at it Zumie cash out my prop ticket on my 3:01 post.I nailed Taco 🌮 Tuesday 1st stolen base with Turner..
Boom! New game…
Soto is so damm good, and only 20 my god!
The wave of the future is these international players!
Giants have a few in the pipeline but know one like this kid..
Scherzer is grinding like a dog through this. He may not get through the 5th.
Catcher’s interference.
Or the 4th.
How about them Nats, quite a resilient bunch..
Damned entertaining game.
Yeah, baby! Soto is something else.
Nice job by Brantley there! Jesus. Can’t play his home field.
Soto’s the man tonight, just smokin the ball..
Damn! Helluva catch.
Soto is un-fucking-believable. That kid can rake. When he turns 21 I’ll buy him a beer! 🍻
Me too🍺
Hell at this rate I’ll buy him a Most Valuable Pitcher beer 🍺
Sorry, but this cracked me up. So yeah I’m 12
lololol
Apologies if this has been posted, or if you have read it. If not, it’s a good read.
Makes absolute sense when you look at the several drafts that were heavy on D-lineman (and them getting a Dee Ford via trade).
https://www.49ers.com/news/49ers-pff-defense-ranking
Yeah, they got a LOT faster getting Ford, Alexander, and Greenlaw. Throw in a top-notch pass rusher, and you go from last in defense to first. And the pass rush leads to interceptions. Ford has 2 forced fumbles already. 8 for the team. They had 12 all last year.
Lynch made some excellent moves this offseason. He may have paid a lot for Alexander and Ford, but they are paying off.
Yeah, brilliant IMO. Costs may have been high, but they have the system to take them to, and potentially win the super bowl, IMO.
Gonna post that on my blog , Chuck. Thanks.
The Wa pen rears its ugly head.
I mean, that dude is throwing 100 and Bregman is spitting on his sickening sliders. I’d take Rainey in our bullpen in a heartbeat.
The walks are infuriating, tho.
Damned nice play even without getting the out!
And of course, Smoltz praises the base runner for getting to 2nd, not the play to swave the run.
Really?
Soto is just flat raking.
Wow. Well I did ask for a suspenseful and action packed series. 😂
Wilco – you going to any of the games in Houston? Any right coast Flappers planning to attend any games in DC?
Wonder when Stricknyne makes his appearance.
No Stricknyne in the series. Not active…
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/10/nationals-announce-world-series-roster.html
He wasn’t active for the ALCS, either.
Nats aren’t stupid, they want a chance to win a W/S by not having Stricnine on their roster their odds increase..
Well, that’s not too surprising.
Possibly never.
I like smoltz but he was criticizing the runner. How could he know that eaton was gonna eat shit and misplay a barely moderately hard catch by jumping way to early. I say 2/3rds of the fielders in MLB make that catch
Smoltz gets tiresome. He often says “Fans don’t understand….” or “Fans can’t appreciate….”
It gets annoying. He thinks we’re blockheads.
Ya gotta love it when so much hangs on one fucking pitch….
Steal game 1 off of Cole feels like 2 wins, huge advantage now..
While pulling for the Nats, I am actually surprised with tonight’s game, especially given the way Scherzer labored….
I hope the rest of the series stays this entertaining…
