A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

We’ve Got a Problem

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 29, 2020

Something I’m not understanding: How does *opening up part of the country* get the economy going again? Isn’t the economy just completely fucked right now? Who is buying cars? Houses? Nobody. Letting Ma and Pa open up the Dixie Mart in Bumblefuck, Wisconsin ain’t gonna get ‘er done.

I don’t think Americans are grasping the enormity of what’s happening right now; and what is coming…..

For those of us able to get it, Giants nbc sports channel supposed to show all 4 2012 WS games starting 9 AM today. I haven’t watched them but there have also been Warriors games, A’s games on their channel and on nbcsn they’ve been showing playoff hockey games from last year. Blessed relief for me.
Today’s sports section in Chron is down to 2 pages, and is in back half of the business section. ouch

It’s scary to say, the U.S has been behaving more like Italy had been behaving than South Korea. As a nation we want South Korea’s results without really taking it as seriously as South Korea has been. As an overall nation.
Trump’s baseless happy-talk and lies appeals to a certain number of people. A recent poll showed 52% of Americans approving how Trump has handled the crisis so far. Fhat’s an absurdly high number considering how Trump has botched things from the get-go, and still is. A lot of of people want to believe the happy-talk, and that’s very dangerous. Certain beaches in Florida are still flooded with people. A fundamentalist church of a 1,000 people in Louisiana continues to meet together. The governor of Mississippi continues to want all businesses in his state to stay open. And there are many other examples of this type of defiance going on.
We’re not going to get South Korean results this way.
Governor Cuomo nailed it when he said “The U.S. has been several weeks behind the virus the whole way.”

Just one example about South Korea: at grocery stores there, someone stands at the door with an electronic wand and checks people’s temperatures. If they are elevated, they are not allowed to enter the store.
I totally realize South Korea is a much smaller nation, but the U.S. is the richest nation in the world. (Although 50% of its wealth is owned by 1% of the people, who also got huge tax cuts from Trump.)

Never been a fan of their coffee but yesterday noticed quite a traffic jam at stand alone Starbucks nearby. Parking lot was full, people waiting outside (not a nice day either with occasional showers) plus it looked like there was a drive thru lane. One within walking distance of where I live has been closed for few days…hmmnn

  14. willedav's avatar willedav said, on March 29, 2020 at 9:05 am

tremendous AB from Scutaro line drive back up middle for rbi. Had to shake up Verlander who had 2 outs no one on then Pagan chops one off 3b bag for a double and then long AB Scutaro fights off 2 tough 98 fastballs in on hands before 2 out risp hit. And then Boom Sando takes him yard to LF and it’s 4-0 giants. wow

  15. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 29, 2020 at 9:07 am

You gotta catch breaks to win a World Series. 2-out easy grounder by Pagan hits the 3b bag, and he ends up on 2b. Then Scutaro hits a linedrive single to center that Jackson kicks, and Pagan scores without a play at the plate. Then Sandoval….wows Verlander.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on March 29, 2020 at 9:15 am

  20. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on March 29, 2020 at 9:24 am

Can’t we as a nation just go two fucking weeks without having to go to the supermarket or Starbucks? I literally haven’t left my house in two weeks. Yet, people like my wife are the fucking problem. She goes to the supermarket every 3 days, Starbucks on sat and sun mornings and is currently at Home Depot getting plants and flowers. How is any of that shit “necessary.”

And it goes beyond that. I have seen a lot of blue collar types boasting about being “essential” because they continue to work their construction jobs. The shelter in place and “quarantine” orders in this country are a joke, as is the definition of “essential” employees.

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on March 29, 2020 at 9:28 am

The irony is that the last time I left my house, two weeks ago today, I had returned from a gambling trip to Louisiana. I was probably in the worst possible place one could be at that moment in time. When I left for that trip the NBA had just postponed the season and I had no idea what was to come. That seemed like an eternity ago.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 29, 2020 at 9:39 am

I have a friend who is an Uber driver who still gets jobs all the time driving drunk people home from big parties where lots of people are gathered in small places.
He’s frightened about getting the virus, and also not happy about enabling party-goers; but needs the money, plus knows that he is keeping some drunk drivers off the road.
He is single and shelters at home when he isn’t driving, or getting gas or groceries.

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on March 29, 2020 at 10:00 am

I completely forgot about Uber. That may be worse than the Airlines from a standpoint of spreading the virus. Your driving people that have no reason to be going out. They either don’t understand the pandemic or they don’t care.

And listen, I get the “people still need to earn a living” thing. But I think two weeks off of work for Uber drivers, supermarket employees, Starbucks baristas, etc…is far better than the consequences of them losing their jobs entirely due to the long term economic ramifications that are going to be felt because we can’t all stand still for 14 days.

  22. willedav's avatar willedav said, on March 29, 2020 at 9:42 am

5 shutout innings for Zito. As Miller said in this first WS ever. Didn’t think about this, but he had pitched in 4 different ALDS and ALCS the A’s lost all of them. and of course wasn’t on roster for 2010.

Yes Wilco is right. I went to work to get some payroll stuff to file for unemployment last week and 3-4 guys were working on top story of our building. there are dozen offices/stores there but all were closed. so this was hardly essential
2 different 4 plex bldgs. on block where I live have had landscaping done on grass etc. Sure it’s great since 99.9% of these guys are Hispanic and aren’t making much to begin with, but again hardly essential work.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on March 29, 2020 at 9:46 am

We’ve been talking about what’s coming a lot at our house. My dad is the mayor of a town in gold country and they just made shelter in place mandatory on Friday after more positive testing. Talking to him about it last night, his take was that the misinformation coming from the Oval Office is exasperating things more than people appreciate. On top of it, some of his constituents go a week or more without seeing anyone anyway so they think it’s no big deal. I can understand that approach in a more rural location.

Folks in my area of Santa Clara county, where the most cases have been reported in CA, should wise up imo. My in laws are some of those that go out every day and shop 2-3 times a week and are asking to visit for dinner. No thanks on that one. We’ve made it two weeks between store visits and limit outside time to catch in the driveway or a bike ride later in the day when less people are out. Online grocery ordering and pickup has been unavailable for over a week and I’m sort of surprised the stores aren’t doing more to protect their workers.

Anyway, I’m watching the 2012 game too. A great memory seeing it in person with my pops. I’d forgotten how fun Pagan was to watch and Sandoval had all the tools to be a great hitter. Too bad he couldn’t be more serious about fitness. Pretty sure that was the game pawlie, Flavor and I hooked up in front before first pitch iirc.

In 1975, Merrill co-wrote the song “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” with Jake Hooker while in Arrow. He sang lead vocals on the original version. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts covered the song in 1982 and landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year.”

Well, I had to look up the Arrows’ version of the song. Jett’s version is very similar to the original Arrows’ version.

No idea that was a cover. Kinda like Quiet Riot (the name makes NO sense) building a career off of Slade.

“A 35-year-old in Hanover Township, PA was arrested for allegedly telling shoppers at a local grocery store that she “had the virus” and subsequently coughed on food throughout the store forcing them to throw away nearly $35,000 word of food.
Gerrity Supermarket co-owner Joe Fasula wrote a lengthy Facebook post about the ordeal which can be read in full below:
Today was a very challenging day.
At 2:20 PM today, I got a call from our Hanover Township store. The manager informed me that a woman, who the police know to be a chronic problem in the community, came in to the store and proceeded to purposely cough on our fresh produce, and a small section of our bakery, meat case and grocery.….”

the riot bloops a single into short RF, craw with sac bunt moves him over. 2 outs Leyland lets the LHP pitch to Scutaro with RHP in pen. This guy is throwing 94 about as hard as anyone in whole series. Scut knocks base hit into right center in front of Jackson, 4-3 Giants.

For all his goofy injuries, Affeldt was lights-out in the playoffs every time. What a weapon for a bullpen. He was under-rated by MLB fans overall.

what an epic finish. romo killed them off sliders to Jackson sinkers to Kelly and fastball at 88 after all the sliders to Cabrera. tigers had 3 more good seasons and won more games 2013 than 2012 but never got back.

Haven’t really seen them side by side much but was Fielder bulkier than Sandoval?

The Hong Kong Flu epidemic from CDC website:

The 1968 pandemic was caused by an influenza A (H3N2) virus comprised of two genes from an avian influenza A virus, including a new H3 hemagglutinin, but also contained the N2 neuraminidase from the 1957 H2N2 virus. It was first noted in the United States in September 1968. The estimated number of deaths was 1 million worldwide and about 100,000 in the United States. Most excess deaths were in people 65 years and older.
    ————————————————————————————————————————————–
There was no panic. There was no nothing.
If you got it, you generally recovered.
Life went on normally – unless you died.
    Not saying it was better.
That’s just the way it was…

“In comparison to other pandemics, the Hong Kong flu yielded a low death rate, with a case-fatality ratio below 0.5% making it a category 2 disease on the Pandemic Severity Index . . . . The same virus returned the following years: a year later, in late 1969 and early 1970, and in 1972. The CDC currently estimates that, in total, the virus killed 1 million people worldwide and around 100,000 people in the U.S.[8]”

Those pesky little numbers make a big difference in the aggregate, just like in baseball. Because it’s more lethal, the incidence of illness and death will be far more concentrated with COVID-19, although if the US had panicked more and earlier, that wouldn’t have been the case.

I’m finding one little key to staying sane is having little routines. I call them quaroutines. Every morning, cup of coffee and a smoke out on the little porch, check emails, take a dump, check fridge, call for deliveries if need be, walk to the wine/snacks store (still open, nothing else is) once a week… Hard to believe reading your posts here about crowds at Starbucks, etc. There is NOTHING like that open here now. I think that’s what was frustrating me: this is now week 10 of heavy shutdown, but since that didn’t work, now it’s verging on lockdown. VN gov’t just announced that airlines are limited to 1 flight per day domestically between Hanoi and Danang and Saigon. That will probably disappear as well. No new int’l flights coming in from most of the West. Was joking with a fellow introvert friend of mine how we, as introverts, have been practicing for this our whole lives. Haha. Yeah, Tom, as you said, this is no joke. Was watching something last night and it made me laugh, and I realized how long it had been since I laughed. We must never forget to laugh….
