Name Game
Ok here’s a fun game to play if you are completely freaking bored as I am right now. I saw this on twitter, I didn’t invent it. Without looking at any rosters, come up with the first or last name of a Giants player for each letter in the alphabet. It has to be the first name you think of (like when I picked Aardsma I always remembered he had a cool name that started with Aa and that was the first name that popped into my head when I thought of A. I struck out on Q and X. I spent the longest time on F for some reason. And I used a nickname for M but I went with it because that’s the first name that I thought of when I got to M. Give it a whirl, this took me like 20 minutes to do. And try not to read my list if you haven’t done so already, it will mess with you doing it completely by yourself.
Aardsma
Beck
Chili Davis
Deion Sanders
Evans
Fred Lewis (this one took forever for some reason)
Gott
Hammaker
Ivie
Julian Tavarez
Krukow
Laskey
Moon Man
Nen
Otero
Pablo Sandoval
Q–come on.
Reuschel
Swift
Tomargo
Uribe
Von Hayes
Willie Mays
X–nope
Yastremski
Zito

This is a screenshot from my recent google searches. A nice snapshot into the boredom of today’s world:

Just a little update from over here: of course people everywhere are gettin’ itchy for the lockdowns to ease up; even here in VN, where people have been extremely compliant with gov’t rules, there has been optimism the lockdown will end soon, and people are starting to be out a bit more now. The key to the optimism is that containment at home has worked pretty well, but the big *hope* is that opening back up won’t result in more new infections because more people now have had it already and their immunity is stronger.
Uh….. a quick look to the north, China (after opening up over the last few weeks) is experiencing a lot of new cases. This thing is not going away quietly or quickly. Personally, I’m stuck in Hanoi until restrictions lift, just waiting to move back to Saigon. I could see the lockdown easing for a couple of weeks, and then the whole thing explodes again and lockdown comes back. I’m packin’ myself a “go bag” to be ready if a window opens, because I have little confidence that window will stay open for long if they open up too soon. Big crowds at sporting events in July?…………
Are you having any difficulty getting stuff you need, Paul?
QUIROZ!
Extra credit should be given for first and last names starting with same letter.
There’s a bunch of ’em for the easy letters…
Yeah I’ll give u a double letter guy Loo,
Steve Scarsone
Oh hell…Bob Brenly,Barry Bonds,Bob Bolin,Dick Dietz, Sam Selman,
Danny Darwin, Jerry Johnson, Rich Rodriguez, Milt May, and for diehards only:
Gil Garrido
Xavier Nady!
Amazing, Kat!
Thanks Loo! Nice work by you as well!
So I will raise you a Bobby Bonds((can’t believe I forgot him) Steve Stone& Rich Robertson!
Bob Barton, Brett Butler, and a couple of holograms: Nick Noonan & Ryan Rohlinger…
Gotta be some P, T, W, C, L guys.
So many H & K singles that I can’t pair up.
Frustrating!
Let’s not forget Mr.3–2 count Brandon Belt!
Solid call on Nick Noonan!
Rick Rueschel só flavor gets a partial credit 😂
Need to throwin a couple of managers as well.
Are own Bruce Bochy and Wes Westrum
I was just about to post Westrum as a NYG player – Frankie Frisch, too.
Mike McCormick and that JJ guy who gave up that killer HR to Neifi Perez in ’98.
Blocked out his exact name…
Why am I playing a child’s game at 3:13 AM with a fellow maniac 3,000 miles away?
Ruben Rivera…
Cause we are 2 insane dudes! Especially 3:17 am Loo!
Bill Bordley,Tommy Toms,& Dan Dressen (sp)
I actually liked Bordley. No idea why.
Tommy Toms! Yikes!
Beats the hell out of Tony Torcato…
Bill Bathe, and righty now( no disrespect) Dave Dravecky
Bathe – classic ’89 WS trivia answer…
Yeah thought you might like that one!
Oh man pitchers seem to dominate
Bud Black& Scott Sanderson
I’m gonna call it a night, Kat.
Thanks for playing.
Taking a pad and pen to bed with me…
Does Covid Coronavirus count as a bigtime player now?
Charlie Culberson?
Great call!
JJ? John Johnston?
With a final player tonight Danny Darwin
Yeah me too Loo, hey sleep 😴 in some..
Loo and ‘Kat were on fire last night. Well done. I’m going to leave this thread up today…
this is just outright robbery in broad daylight.
Not defending Stub Hub, but what does baseball’s revenue figure have to do with them?
And who the hell buys baseball tickets on StubHub weeks or months in advance?
I bet they do at least 80% of their business within 48 hours of the event.
And Happy Easter, Ramon Ramirez & Mark Melancon…
jerry Johnson.
One thing I remember about the Dickerson breakout game was Krukow making fun of a DBack player. Ketel Marte got a base hit second time up but strained a leg muscle and had to come out of the game after running to 1b.
the guy AZ sent in was Hispanic player Ildemaro something, Vargas maybe. Right away Kruk goes, ” ill tomorrow but better the next day.”
What? The guy wound up getting an rbi single off Samrdz first time he got up.
Bob Bolin. nickname was BB and players who hit against him said that was he threw.
Best game he ever pitched was next to last day of ’66 season.
I think he 2-hit the Pirates.
I was rambling about it just the other day…
Yeah Bolin threw hard, he had a mean streak in him like Bumgarner..
And more Happy Easter 🐣 thoughts for Mike Matheny,Matt Morris, and Scott Servais as well..
Maybe later we can move on to all-time greats in other sports (Seattle Slew) or famous people (Woodrow Wilson). Maybe not…
“Woodrow”…woody the wino was the guy on Sanford and son who was married to Aunt Esther. Man she hilarious.
Goose Gossage?
Yeah I was going to use him last night Mac, even though it’s Rich.Ill tell ya what was they’re more a intimidating stare then Goose?
Could start a SOB stare squad on the mound as well?
Maybe the Mad Hungarian Al Hrbosky are Dave Stewart?
The King of many past boner jokes are very own SF Giant player Brian Bocock!🤣
joey Almofitano(sp) he hit the highest pop-up that I have ever seen. Bob Garibaldi the savior that never was. Stu Miller, for some reason I loved that guy.
Mays used Amalfitano’s bat in his 4 HR game…
Bob Garibaldi, wow nice pull Winder!
My buddies and I always laughed about him being the 100,000 dollar bonus baby and yet he never won a big league game, yes quite the bust. But go figure this one out, he was the College World Series MVP while pitching for Santa Clara in 1962…
Yeah, it just goes to show…you never know.
wish sports channel could reshow this one: April 12 1993 Bonds home opener. Hits one out in first AB and Giants beat Marlins in extras as DLew singles to score Mike Benjamin.
Um…under “O” is Otero…?
Exactly, Wille, those are the games they should be showing.
Giants had a 3B coach once named Gene Glynn.
Never made it to the show, whole career with Expos mlb…
Didin’t Dan Quisinberry pitch for the Giants for a season?
Chuck Yes his last season in 1990.
He stunk it up and retired maybe mid season?
Aaron Altherr.
Good one Mac!
I even mentioned him if the Giants were going to give him an AB while he was with them. Finally they did, he made an out and was cut soon after..
The 1K wonder — struck out in his lone AB for SF.
Aardsma will always be remembered (by me anyway) as the guy who got in front of Hank Aaron in the Baseball Almanac.

Fucking Zito!
Pitchers Jeff Juden& Steve Soderstrom
For Easter..Bugs Bunny
All the Alou’s, Ed Bailey, Cepada, Davenport.
Looking at some of the rosters we had and the players we just gave away makes you wonder what if we had an owner that really wanted to win.
Matt Moore duh 😒
Always hated that we got rid of Kingman.
Yeah Kingman,Garry Maddox,Jack Clark, Gaylord Perry were some trades that pissed me off under the terrible ownership of Horace Stoneham!!
The only Otero I remember was a 3b coach for Reds in ’60s, Reggie Otero.
boom. 12 games back in ’12. Don’t know why I recall him
https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oteroda01.shtml
I think Flavor was pulling a Dan Otero out of his hat when he pitched a season back in 2012..
yeah that’s the guy good call both you guys! Remember him from the A’s as decent relief but not from SF days.
O shits and the other one Okert, also bring back memories yuck.

“Chub Feeney, then the VP of the Giants, could recall going to the Candlestick site while construction was still in progress and seeing whole carloads of assorted debris sail past him through the air. ‘Does the wind always blow like this?’ Feeney asked a workman. The latter shrugged. ‘Just between the hours of one and five…’
“…nor did it come as visible relief that the workman had his facts wrong: the wind at night was even worse, and with it came bone-petrifying cold.” Chas Einstein p. 119 “Willie’s Time”
Peace, health, serenity, solace, joy, and strength on This Very Day. Happy Easter tidings in the Age of Coronavirus.
Same to you, Pawlie and everybody here…
Thanks to an old media guide and baseballreference, I’ve got all the same-letter first-last name players in the SF era. So far, here’s the list mostly from Kat and Loo:

Bill Bathe
Brandon Belt
Bud Black
Brian Bocock
Bobby Bolin
Barry Bonds
Bobby Bonds
Bill Bordley
Bob Brenly

Dave Dravecky
Dan Driessen
Gil Garrido
Jerry Johnson
John Johnstone
Jeff Juden
Mike Matheny
Mike McCormick
Mark Melancon

Ramon Ramirez
Rick Reuschel
Ruben Rivera
Rich Robertson
Rich Rodriguez
Ryan Rohlinger
Scott Sanderson
Steve Scarsone
Sam Selman
Scott Servais
Steve Soderstrom
Steve Stone
Tommy Toms
Tony Torcato
By my count, there’s 16 players from the SF era still out there, the earliest from 1959 and the latest from last year.
Outstanding, Mac! Now we got a real game.
Wrack those bored little minds and don’t cheat!
P? L? W?
Winder, did you ever see Frank Howard try to hit Stu Miller? One game he got up there and looked like he was going to hit it to the moon. Miller threw him 3 pitches each slower than the previous and he struck out in 3. At Candlestick and you thought they had just won the pennant. First time I went to a game at the Stick in “60 I thought it looked like a space ship. No wind in outer space but about as cold.
Stan- No can’t say i saw that one. Did see him pitch a few games in the early 60’s though. I was one of those who carried a little transistor radio around with me whenever the game was on and heard a boatload of games. I know Howard was a Dodger so I imagine he struck him out more than once.
Manny Mota – I guarantee it…
There’s one. Listed in media guide as Manuel Mota. (other oddities: Buddy Black, Bob Bonds.)
Bob Bonds is hilarious.
Like Gowdy saying Tom Agee in ’69 WS…
Remaining breakdown: B-5; A, M, R 2 each; G, H, J, S 1 each.
A great hard nose player with plenty of respect and the glue of the Cubs infield 2B Glen Beckett has passed away at 79.Beckert&Don Kessinger sure formed a nice double play combo for years..
A couple of utility guys…
Andy Allanson and Craig Colbert!!
First Giants Japanese player and a good pitcher.. Masanori Murakami
yep- he was a big deal at the time.
Kat gets two plus one I missed in the media guide: Colbert!
Yeah I’m rolling up my baseball sleeves now Mac!
We’re on the brink of something big here
Pitcher Brad Brink and Scott Service!
Bud Byerly too
I’m obsessing on the ‘H’.
Did Hugh Hefner or Henry Hill ever play for us?
Byerly’s a pitcher from ’59-60.
The B team is real strong 💪
Let’s add Bob Burda..
I had some hope for Burda – now who the fuck is Bud Byerly?
He started Byerly’s ice cream later on I guess?
Four more down — Yes, there was Servais and Service.
Heath Hembree!
Nice your fixation on the letter H pays off Loo!
2 more scrubs..
Utility guy Ron Roenicke
Pitcher Brian Boehringer
It took all day…
Three more down!
Giants game tonite is game 2 of 2018 season at LA Cueto on mound. Definitely fun to watch when he’s on.
Manny mota definitely a Giant. When he was on Pirates had one of best Strat O Matic cards ever one year when he hit .350 as part time player.
Abiatal Avelino!
Bingo!
There’s a recent player that’s painfully obvious, but I haven’t seen him mentioned. Probably lost in the shuffle with the other players in his letter group.
Sleep deprived from last night has the brain cells working harder today!
So I can’t believe nobody got Mike Morse!!!
There it is!
The G was bugging me like Loo’s H
So here we go, Give me a G,Give me another G
What’s that spell? Grant Green SS
Three left!
Four left. Two are recent. The other two have same last name as two players from my 2:02 list, one of whom has a nearly identical full name.
Flavor:
A Zenyatta Special just started on TVG here.
Maybe 3 hours from now out there?
Big Head’s kid
Brett Bochy!
Yes!
Cueto set down 18 in a row before Chris Taylor blooped one into RF for single.
Of the two left (J & R), one is from the year The Beatles broke up, the other from the year Montana won his last Super Bowl and also played for the A’s.
1966 Manny Mota slash line for Pirates: ..332/.383/.472 for .855
His teammate and countryman from DR Matty Alou led the league at.342. Felipe was second Clemente 5th.
Mac still thinking about the last two…
My favorite Cardinal of all time is definitely Timothy Dolan…

Aurillia
Bonds (Bob Brenly as my Double B)
Clark two to choose from
Durham (eh gads…popped in my head because of that 2003 Marlins playoff game they showed on mlb channel)
Ernie Riles – Darrell Evans should have been pick but E for first letter in first name popped into my head first
Pedro Feliz
Garrelts
Larry Herndon (Hac Man honorable mention)
Ivie
Johnny Lemaster
Kent
Lincecum
Mitchell
Nen
Russ Ortiz
Panda
Quissenberry 🙂
Reuter
Schmidt
Robby Thompson – Tim-May is the first thing to pop in my head but used him already
Uribe (again two to choose from)
Velez
Matt Williams
Xavier Nady (did he get playing time?)
Zito
Dave Dravecky more worthy and there is your Double D!!!
Loo, you asked if I’m having any problems getting things over here under lockdown. Generally, no problems; one problem was having 2 pharmacies not serve me during a little period of anti-foreigner sentiment. The only thing now I haven’t been able to get is *the fuck out of here*….
Think you’ll ever move back here?
I looked up the 1970 guy and his name is Jim Johnson, a pitcher.
Zero recollection.
Looks like he made the club out of ST and had a 3 game career.
He got the win in his final appearance (box score below) thanks to a combined 14 RBIs from Ron Hunt, Bob Heise and Russ Gibson (seriously). Giants also drew 15 walks. Four double letter guys appeared…
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CIN/CIN197004180.shtml
Yeah, that guy was pretty obscure.
Half the fuckin list is pretty obscure!
Plus Clay Carroll and Bo Belinsky for the Reds!
You amaze me…
No plan to move back to the US, Loo; couldn’t really afford it, honestly. But, I’ve learned to never say you know what. At this time I’m just trying to get out of Hanoi in the north and get back to Saigon in the south. Maybe next month. Or June. Or… eek.
Why don’t we start a community home for retired unmarried Flappers?
I think we might have an imposter player, I don’t remember a John Johnstone even though I mentioned that name to Loo at 12:44 am when he said JJ gave got lit up in a game against Miami
I definitely remember Jerry Johnson and he had a great year helping the Giants out of the pen in 71 with 18 saves.
Jim Johnson no recollection of him a year earlier.Damm I’ve been quarantined too long!!
Johnstone gave up a big HR to Helton in that infamous season finale at Coors in ’98.
Correct, Mac. Neifi homered off Nen…
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/COL/COL199809270.shtml
Joe Carter was 3-4 with a HR, but was taken out in a double switch because he made the last out in top 6th. Damn Dusty.
I had Neifi on my list.
Can’t make it up:
Giants traded Bob Heise for some stiff named Floyd Wicker.
Floyd Wicker’s one career HR was hit off some stiff named Floyd Weaver…
I stand corrected, nice on Mac&Loo( geez almost sounds like Mac&Cheese)
So they’re is a John Johnstone ,a Jim Johnson&a Jerry Johnson..??
Wasn’t there a Jay Johnstone?
Yes they’re was P/A .
Nice 20 year career but never played for the Giants..
Ah, ok.
Good stuff everyone. Too lazy to play, but fun to read!
