A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Finally….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 23, 2020

I got another Trump HOF Donor email and it, in itself, should be put in the HOF for its epic outrageous stupidity, but I’m not going to post it (as pathetic as he and it is).

Because today is Opening Day. We’ve crawled through 4 months and 4 miles of shit to get here –a day that will very likely result in a complete and utter shellacking.

But fuck it, who cares….

Watching some of Twins Braves game last night, starting at 2b for Minn was our old buddy, Triple O Adrianza.
Last season slash line: .272/.349/.416 for .765 OPS. Twins picked him up off season 2017 after Giants and Brewers had waived him.

His old teammate Romo is there too now. Quite a turnaround from when Adrianza hit .186 for Giants 2015.

As late as 2016 Crawford was whacking HRs and rbis with .772 OPS to go with top flight D, before big contract kicked in.

Watched all of Twins and Cubs here in Twin Cities coverage. Adrianza has transmogrified into a good, multi-positional utility man. Cubs won 4-3 on the basis of a two-run blast by Rizzo and a pair of single-shots by Contreras. Twinks dinked in three runs, two of them on passed balls by Contreras…NOT a good defensive catcher. It’s all about the bat.

All the Cubbies runs were off Homer Bailey. Guy can’t be too smart. It is not impossible to legally change your front-name. Homer would be okay for a slugger–but a moundsman? Meanwhile, the Bomba squad couldn’t do diddly vs Jon Lester and a set of bullies. Seems like the hurlers will have the advantage in early season. Josh Donaldson, for example, was in anything but midseason form

I would love to see the latest trump HOF piece (those damned things are hilarious), but agree, don’t want to dirty Opening Day.

Man, I used to live for opening day. It has always been my favorite day by far…like xmas and birthday rolled into one. Obviously feels different this year, but I am just happy to watch baseball, again. Hope our boys surprise us and pin a L on the bumbinos.

    Go Giants! BEAT LA!

Yup, I always considered Opening Day as my new year, but this just feels like extended spring training to me. Still, I do hope to watch at least a couple of innings tonight. Go Giants.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 23, 2020 at 10:18 am

Yep, just does not have the feel of an opening day. I would typically be coordinating with the folks with whom I was going to the game, getting down there early, tailgating, hitting a few bars before the game, etc. And of course, heading into the yard early to catch BP and the OD festivities. Damn, I miss all of that…truly was my favorite day of the year.

As long as we don’t give in or up and fight till the end we got a shot. This is the perfect scenario to get a solid team attitude. It starts at the top. Go Giants.

It’s ON!!!!! Okay, so it’s at the LAtrine and vs. Opie, but with only two L.H. batters in the lineup, Crawdaddy & Yaz, Kershaw’s edge is not HUGE. Last season indicated he has lost a tiddle of his edge. I know its totally unorthodox, but my preference would have been NOT to start Cueto vs. the LaBumbos. Rather, Kapler should have started with an “Opener” and then a parade of bullies…anything to keep those Bums off their game.

The one they could use this tactic against is their up and coming #1, Buehler, Ferris P. Looking forward to what high OBP guys like Solano can do against the Bumbos. Men on base has a magical means of giving pitchers a nasty case of the yips. If one of the scrubinis is willing to take one for the team, with the flesh part of his forearm dangling out a bit…

This contest may be as uneven as the roads in Hell, but hey–the season is ON and its GIANTS BASEBALL. This one is where it would be nice to see a reincarnation of Sal the Barber Maglie on the mound for S.F. Close shaves would give that high-priced help something to think about. And as Leo the Lip Durocher famously said: “Nice guys finish last.”

Hmmm Chi has 23?players,Unca has 33 players?
Obviously 🙄 they need to go up 7 with Chi’s and down 3 with Unca
And they still have to add and subtract to the 40 man active roster right?
Looking at Unca’s list I would guess a couple relievers and maybe a catcher?
It’s weird with the cast hers cause none of them are on the 40 right now I believe, so their is a lot more creative moves that need to be done before game time..

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 23, 2020 at 10:20 am

Yeah, I dunno where Charlie/Unca got his list. Mine is from the Giants site (active roster). Maybe they are still debating the other seven to round-out the 30?

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 23, 2020 at 9:58 am

Yeah I counted them after I posted. Odd men out I’d think would be Triggs, Drrrty Sanchez, and Brantly. 3 catchers for 60 games?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 23, 2020 at 10:07 am

you get 3 extra which is what the “taxi squad” refers to. one of them has to be a C.

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 23, 2020 at 10:04 am

There are no catchers on the Chi list. !

  17. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 23, 2020 at 10:11 am

16 pitchers so wonder if they keep them all for the 4 in LA and put 2 position guys (plus 1 of Cs) on taxi squad or not. gotta wonder just how ready any of the SPs are and how long Kapler would let them go.

  18. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 23, 2020 at 10:15 am

btw someone who won’t be going to LA nor will be in the dugout for home games is Nakken. Her job as assistant to Antoan Richardson is doing pregame work with OFs, and baserunning. Only 8 out of the 13 (!) coaches Kapler has on staff are allowed in dugout per ML rules.
So that brief cameo of her coaching 1b might be last time we see her except for maybe something with AmyG.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 23, 2020 at 10:24 am

Yep. Read that…But Giants again being a first. Nakken as first woman coach on ML team, and Renal Brooks-Moon as first woman public address announcer for a ML club.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 23, 2020 at 10:27 am

Jimenez makes the cut. He is young and raw, but has some nasty stuff in the mid-90s. Currently a two-pitch pony, but as Kruk said, once he adds a change and possibly other pitches, he should be even more effective.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 23, 2020 at 10:29 am

When I was unavoidably detained at Elkton, there was a guy in my poetry class who went by the cognomen of “Tippy.” Then there was this yoot from Iowa–a Tyler. In one of the inevitable waiting-lines, they were standing cheek a jowl and I remarked “Tippicanoe and Tyler Too.”

William Henry Harrison, victor in the Battle of Tippicanoe over the Shawnees, used that slogan and won the presidency in 1840 or thereabouts. Within a few days of his Inaugural Address the case of pneumonia he caught on that fatal occasion resulted in his going totally horizontal. It was said that the damning he received from Tecumseh’s brother, a man known as the Shawnee Prophet, foretold his demise. He was succeeded in office by his running-mate, John Tyler.

Him being into poetry and all, I half hoped Tippy would catch the historical allusion. No such luck. And, of course, Tyler being an Iowan, hadn’t a clue.

Could the worst of all possible outcomes become the terminus of this hatched-up season…an alleged World Series between the Yankmees and the LaBumbos? If so, it will only confirm that in contemporary America, money rules and that big, dirty money usually calls the shots. Bob Dylan put it this way: “Money doesn’t talk, it swears.”

He’s had plenty of up& downs but has one thing Z always loves, he has a good eye taking pitches( gee Belt redux) and has a good OBP and can steal a bag. Just hoping they catch alittle lighting in a bottle I guess. Formerly a 5th rd pick of Tampa Bay.
