A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Quiet Deadline

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 1, 2020

No surprises yesterday, Clev and Marte were the two biggest names to get moved. Even Clev in that 9 player deal, there weren’t any top prospects moving around. The Giants? Look, they weren’t going to trade Luciano, Ramos, or Bishop, after that the prospect mantle is pretty bare. I applaud Z for not making a move just to make a move. And we got the tatted up Banda! Come on, our street cred went up yesterday. You can’t put a price tag on street cred. I’m tired of living off the faint memory of what the Bowker Gang used to do for us…….

Asked Pads fan godson if he was happy with haul. said he couldn’t be happier and only depth pieces were given up by preller. They romped Rox last night again. myers, who is now hitting other teams like he only used to do us, homered and has .950 OPS to make that posey $$ deal look less bad.
Kid 2b Cronenworth made a nice defensive play to start DP off one hop 100 mph rocket from blackmon.

Pads added couple vet arms to young pitching staff and bats. They are scheduled to be in town vs. A’s this weekend and then host Giants for 4 next weekend. both series could affect standings for all involved.

Yes the Pads came out golden on that deal, indians were hoodwinked

Two dozen games and this crazy season is kaput. After their latest shellacking by the Friar Tuckers the Rox may be just a tad woozy. Giants pitchers will be happy to NOT face their sore-assed opponents in the Box of Rox. Time to get to that .500 mark. An injury list player or two should be back this week. That could help keep things perking.

Oops. Memory glands sagging again. According to MLB official schedule we are to play at the Box of Rox.

Pomeranz k’d the side around a base hit in 8th last night, including Arenado. Trading him last year plus Black who sucked, got us Dubon, who might eventually help as D first IF who can cover CF. Right now he swings at everything and doesn’t show much pop. Giants still have hole to fill at SS to cover for Crawford.

imo Watson could have gotten us at least as much; he’ll be 36 next year and isn’t likely to come back as FA. Giants should have taken what they could have gotten for him and bled any contender short on pen guys.

As we all know, Craw is signed through next year, so I suspect more of the same at SS next year. Luciano is the eventual heir apparent at SS, and if he pans-out the way many think, he will hold that position for at least as long as Craw has. According to the prospect list on the Giants home page, his ETA is 2022 (first year Craw is gone).

During some commercial last night heard snippets of someone covering “With a little Help from My Friends.” Made me think of Joe Cocker…I had that LP from 69 recorded in LA with just his name on it. Leon russell, sneaky pete Kleinow, Rita Coolidge (wow what a babe) singing back up.
Bunch of good songs: Cohen’s Bird on the Wire, Delta Lady, She came in through bathroom window, Darling be Home Soon, that’s your business now

Wonder if Pillar has completed trip to SherpaVille.
F/G guru Szmborski had this to say about him:
“…perfectly reasonable upgrade to the roster…” and
“…a better defender in CF than most of the Rockies options.”
slash line so far even better than SF—.274/.325/470 with higher BB and ISO pcts plus 38 points higher OB and Slugging over last season. Moving to Coors unlikely to downgrade those either. Is an FA after this season

I know I’m a flip flopper now. I admit it. Kinda glad we didn’t dump after reading what little was offerd. Makes the last month fun.

Just think if this was last September, and instead of taking a big dump in August we started the month only a 1/2 game out??

If we face the Dodgers, who will our next 2 pitchers be after Cueto? They have Urias in game 3 assuming we can get a split in the kerhaw / buehler games.
    Go Giants!

  12. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 1, 2020 at 10:09 am

Luciano hasn’t played at any level above rook ball–neither high A nor low A. That could be where he is next season but seems highly unlikely he’d be ready to make jump all the way to MLB by 2022. Fangraphs guy said he might not even be a SS at all and could be ticketed for OF on their page.
He’ll be 19 later this month
Giants still have lot to figure out on IF going forward.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2020 at 10:15 am

I know all of that about Luciano. I am going strictly on what I have read, and see per the Giants web site. An Athletic article I read several weeks ago said the Giants plan to keep him at SS. And again, the Giants web site says ETA 2022. None of us know how this will all pan out, but everything I have read is he is the SS of the future. Time will tell, and they will have to go stop-gap until Luciano is ready.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on September 1, 2020 at 3:07 pm

Don’t forget about Will Wilson, he’s also only played Rookie league ball and whatever they are doing in Sactown this year. At $13 mil and a Zaidi guy, he’ll be in the mix at SS as well. I wonder if those guys at the alt site are getting playing time that’s equivalent to A or double A?
Probably getting more one on one coaching this year, so who knows what league Luciano and Wilson will start in next year.

lulz – yeah. The way people presented themselves in early photography is interesting to me. Players like Young, Ruth, Cobb etc would be competitive in any era but probably not all time greats. I could see them adopting the most current fitness norms and whatnot but I hear you.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 1, 2020 at 11:21 am

I don’t get that take (and it’s a common one). Barely anyone played back then. And it was all white people. Those dudes could work out 24/7 I don’t think they’d ever come close to being competitive in today’s massive player pool

WilleD – here is the article I mentioned earlier on Luciano (it is recent…within the last month). Zaidi and the Giants IF coach Correa both talk of the kid being the SS for a long time to come. We shall see if and when that all pans out.

    https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/top-prospect-marco-luciano-excites-giants-his-shortstop-defense

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 1, 2020 at 10:55 am

thx Chi I remember seeing this earlier. But imo, puro puff piece (Correa the kid coach who has only done AZ ball is a defensive guru lol) and even here doubt is expressed by Pavs what position he ultimately winds up playing.
Giants have bunch of hitters that are projected to cover OF…much fewer on IF, major area of need imo.
We’ll see how the prospects sort out.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 1, 2020 at 11:08 am

Wilson and Toribio the other IF prospects have only played rook ball too outside of 3 games by Toribio. they can only be ‘promoted aggressively” through the system if they play well at higher levels, which remains years in distance. Like Luciano they are all very young without benefit of minor league experience this year.
Giants can say whatev about these guys–as prospects it’s up to them to show what ceiling/floor is.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 1, 2020 at 11:37 am

I agree that it is up to the prospects to perform and make a case. I think Luciano will push the envelope. Again, time will tell.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on September 1, 2020 at 3:24 pm

Like I mentioned on your guy’s earlier post, Wilson is a Zaidi guy that management ate a $13 mil contract to get him, he’ll get a long look at SS. Also we don’t have a clue as to the type of one on one coaching and the level of play these guys are playing at the alt site. Will this year fast track them?

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 1, 2020 at 4:08 pm

Good question. The level of play and fitness regimen and food in Sac must be high, but it’s still scrimmage and practice. No busses, though. Wilson received a $3M signing bonus from LAA last year, before the Giants bought him for $13M. Strange deal. At least Cozart’s money’s off the books now.

Anybody agree w/me that Flores doesn’t look like much of an athlete? The guy’s body doesn’t look like a dude that has a lot of athletic skill, especially that power bat. Dude can hit. Sorta reminds me of Soriano and his power bat a few years back, though he looked thinner and a bit more athletic to me…

      • sandog's avatar sandog said, on September 1, 2020 at 2:03 pm

He’s an interesting player. Can’t run, not much of a fielder, doesn’t draw walks—but he has got a short quick swing and can do some damage with the bat. This team can put up with a lot of shortcomings if a guy can swing the bat a bit.
But yes, I agree he doesn’t come off as much of an athlete.

No significant holes. Nobody badly slotted. Though it may or may not occur, a chorus-line is not outta the question.

The worst team in the NFL right now could go back in a time machine and completely crush the Packers of the ’60s who won five championships. Of course, athletes today are bigger and stronger and in better condition.
And certainly white players in the early years of all sports benefited from not having to face black players.
You have to evaluate players compared to their eras, though, in my opinion. Compared to his era of MLB, Cy Young was incredibly dominant.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on September 1, 2020 at 2:09 pm

zumiee- not so sure about that. Today’s players with 1960’s rules. i think the 60’s Packers would crush pretty much any team nowadays.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 1, 2020 at 4:06 pm

Look at the sizes of the players on those ’60s Packers. The teams nowadays could run the ball well against those teams, IMO. Just sheer bulldozer football. And I don’t see the Packer O-Line being able to stop the pass rush of today’s athletes.

      • Winder's avatar Winder said, on September 1, 2020 at 4:40 pm

Yeah, you are probably right about the pass rush. But after a quarter of football they would probably not have a WR or a QB walking very well. It’s just a totally different game than it was. It’s way more faster now and they are in better shape for he most part but these guys stretch their bodies to the limit and are continually getting hurt and a lot of it is from minimal contact.

I hope the Padres lose every game this year and next, and that San Diego breaks away from the mainland and drifts out to the middle of the Pacific.

SanDog might not appreciate that… unless he’s always dreamed of living on an island…

322-1172, was this anyone’s phone number back in the day?

Scary, I still remember my phone number in NJ when I was 6 years old… parents drilled it into us in case we ever got into trouble somewhere…

Nine outs to go and only a 16 run lead. Do you think we can hold em?

    Robertson sighting!
Dickerson leading off with chance for #4.

And the kid has a base hit.
Wouldn’t be surprised Rox have a position guy pitch 9th. What an ugly night for their pitching staff.

Robertson gets the call up instead of Davis.Yep just had to say it..
Rickard with the fake injury and no batting average done for the year, and probably his Giants career..

That’s weak to have to settle for a walk for the Dick…
