A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Sherpa’s Were Running For Cover

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 2, 2020

How do I know Dickerson reads the blog? Because he looks like he plays with a chip on his shoulder. And on the early morn of Aug 30 with smoke billowing just outside my bedroom window I wrote this about the reason the Giants should pick up Jackie Bradley:

……………………………………………………

Before the ink even set to dry on those fateful penned words, The Dick set out to prove me to be quite the fool. He’s gone 7 for 10 with 4 bombs and 8 RBI’s. In two games played. Astounding production and if Z and Kap had been waiting on him to heat up they were right to do so.

When asked by Baggs where this surprising offensive explosion came from, Dickerson snarled, “Tell Flavor he can stick that bottle of lightening right up his ass.” And somewhere up above, Twinfan raged…..

Even with our suspect pitching staff we have a run diff of only -1. The final post season “walk of shame” spot is ours for the taking if we want it badly enough…..

Last night’s explosion was a case of the shoe being on the other foot. For years, ever since ’93 when the Rox joined the NLW and lost every single contest to the Braves, costing SF the pennant; the Box of Rox has been a royal house of horrors for the Giants. For years in that yard, the Denver team has been built to advantage their park conditions. Last night we had bigger and better guns and made em pay for all that aggravation over the years.

  2. Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on September 2, 2020 at 7:37 am

Looking at the schedule for the last 23 games, we have a probable edge, giving SF a chance to finish with a .500 record or better. With currently the third best offense in MLB and the team all fired up after last night’s blowout in the Box of Rox, my best guesstimate is 13-10 through the finale; which would give us a season record of 31-29 and a probable trip to the playoffs.

Of course anything can happen in baseball, as we Giants fans have so deeply etched into our memories. But right now team morale could not be higher and the next run of games include the last in the Box and then the Mariners and Snakes coming to the Bay. Old farmer adage may come into play: “Make hay while the sun shines.”

Do you believe in magic? Three even years through the Teens taught us something about that.

Good for him that was fun to watch. Wasn’t all that long ago he was under Mendoza line. Giants lost 3 of 4 first time into Denver and I remember being upset how often many of them hit ball into the ground. Dickerson and teammates launched all night and voila. Kinda funny the C Butera only one of Rox pitchers to go an inning and hold Giants scoreless. Feel bad for Black, someone I have lot of respect for. He’s just doomed there.

As has been noted here recently, the BC are playing very well right now. Crawford has .800 OPS (.350 OB/.450 slugging) with numbers such as in his best seasons 5 years ago when he hit 21 HRs. Belt has OPS over 1.000 (.625 slugging), and that includes .810 OPS at home with .500 slugging at the O, where he has struggled mightily.

Back of my mind I wonder if Giants considering extending these 2, IF: archways stay closed next season and they both can get reasonably close to these offensive numbers over 162 next season as opposed to small sample size this year.

I didn’t get a chance to watch last nights game but it just had to be an amazing show. I love being proved wrong and i think this years Giants are a lot more special than i had thought. This team can hit. If we can corral the BP and get 5/6 innings out of our starters we should make the playoffs.

We just have to be like this against the leagues best pitchers.

Yeah going into that game there uphill battle all year has been run differential. Going in it was -19 after the game 23-5 it’s -1 after the slaughter and relentless pounding of the Giant “ Thunder with the Lumber”
They should finally b pull into the Red today in plus runs against a lousy Rockies team.
Still amazing and proud knowing they set a Major League Record with 3 players,Dickerson,Solano,&Crawford all knocking in 6 runs each in a 9 inning game!!That record should hold up forever…

No disrespect for Robertson but if I am Crawford I would want to be playing after knocking in 6 runs last night, u stay with the Hot hand.
Are actually even better let Robertson play (which he is) but Dump Ruf from the DH spot and put Crawford there..

Day game after a longish night affair and a fairly tough LHP on the mound, it may not have been a bad idea to give Craw and Belt a day on the pine. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit once a RH RP shows up on the mound one or the other of them will get into the game…IF those bats and D. at 1st would be needed.

We may not get the Duffster back, but his best friend is Daniel Robertson. Robertson tweeted “I’m going back to the House that Duffy Built”.

  13. sandog's avatar sandog said, on September 2, 2020 at 9:27 am

Extending Crawford and Belt is a bridge too far for me. I like those guys, esp Craw, and I am glad to see them playing well, but I hope we don’t extend them.
As for those peepholes, they must seal them up permanently. For once, the ballpark is at least in the galaxy of being a fair park and we’ve got to keep it that way.

I’m fine with Robertson coming up ahead of Jaylin D. Without Robertson, we’ve got 2 guys on this team who can reliably field ground balls and accurately throw to bases and that is a little ridiculous.

@Bozo–I got some chicken breasts soaking in your marinade as we speak for dinner tonight.

SD, I hope it works for ya. The only way I’ve ever cooked the chicken from that marinade has been on a grill, so I’ll be interested on how it comes out.

Tonight I’m grilling up a skirt steak. I’ve got it soaking in a marinade that I haven’t tried before but it sounded good so we’ll see.
Not sure if it’s a keeper yet, but here it is if y’all want to try it too. 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup Dijon mustard, 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 2 tablespoons molasses, 3 cloves of garlic chopped, a large shallot chopped, Mix all that together and poor it over a 2lb skirt steak in a large zip lock bag.

Dog… Used the Air Fryer on a Tri Tip( guessing 2 lbs plus) last night that bad boy turned out perfect!
Recipe I tried..1/4 cup olive oil 6-8 garlic cloves chopped up, salt& pepper mixed it all up in a bowl then put the tri tip in a plastic gallon bag poured all the ingredients in, let it all blend and marinate for over an hour.
Preheat my fryer 400 degrees for 5 min, then put the tri tip in for 400 degrees for 15 min then flip the meat over for additional 15 minutes at 400 degrees and it comes out perfect 👌 moist to cut into after I let it sit for 10 minutes before cutting it up in thin slices…

No it was just right with the Cosori Air Fryer San Dog!

30 is all I needed and it was just pinkish with alittle juice.I did take off some of the extra fat first which might of helped cook it faster! I will be making a nice tri tip sandwich 🥪 with my leftovers in alittle while!

After the Giants flubbed in the top of the 7th, I got a bad vibe and went back outside to get that pond decently drained. This was on Kapler once again. No way should have let Webb start the 6th. A reliever could have started out with a clean slate. As it was Jarlin finished the inning okay, but that one hit he gave up with two men on resulted in the score going from a plausible 6-2 to 6-4. Then using El Gordo as a pinch-hitter was el stupidisimus. He was a three bomb hero in ’12, but he’s gone to fat and its 2020.

And what happened to the offense? Last night they were dynamite with RISP, but maybe all that mojo past the first innings had run its string. Oh well, we don’t call it the Box of Rox for shits and giggles.

If the Giants had lost the first game and won the second, it would be a much better feeling. There’s something about winning early in a series, but losing later in the series that changes the perspective.
A split of the two games in Coors Field is an acceptable result, IMO.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 2, 2020 at 5:50 pm

It’s part of the new thinking. Put your best reliever in the situation where the game is most on the line. It’s not something that everyone agrees on. Bryan Kenny supports the idea in his book. It does chip away at the idea of The Closer, which has gotten a whole narrative of its own over the last few decades. Who was the closer on the ’71 Giants? That kind of specialized role didn’t really exist in those days.

Oh they had a closer named Jerry Johnson that year, he was surprisingly good with 18 saves an era of 2.97 and he won 12 games losing 9.Never started but was probably their best arm that year out of the pen..

With 21 decisions, it shows the difference in the role in those days.

Back in the day as I’ve noted over the years, the key reliever was the Fireman. He was the kinda guy with icewater in his veins who could be thrown into a mid-to-midlate game situation and simply shut them down. Somewhere in the lost me for the decade 70’s the closer concept developed and the Fireman got lost in traffic.

Losing the 1st 2 games of a normal 3 gamer is bad, but winning the last game makes the plane ride home much easier to cope with. That’s why I was shaking my head at Bochy in the past, because his LU card looked like a white flag game on getaway day a lot and usually was..

Covid and pre-existing health issues. Very deadly combination.

I recently read an article about the lead-singer for Devo battling Covid and surviving it. It was a terrifying article. Fortunately he got through it. He was on a ventilator for several days.

Second straight night a Braves player hit 3 HRs at Fenway.

Fenway, like Yankmetonia, has that short porch where ordinary high fly balls turn into pixie dust magic.

Such a great pitcher Tom Terrific was a joy to watch throw, like Gibson,Koufax,,Marichal it didn’t get any better!
Yeah he was a family man thru out.Had a house/vineyard up in Calistoga he really enjoyed and was proud of.So that’s the memory I will still remember him by instead of the dementia and covid fights he had to deal with.
RIP Tom Seaver you truly were Terrific..,

1986 in Boston was a special year (regardless of losing the Series) and I went to a ton of games that year. Rarely did I go to a game at any time anywhere just to see one player, but when Seaver joined the Sox that season, yep. I was never a Mets fan, but it was hard to ever dislike Seaver even as a Met, and it was very cool to see him pitch at Fenway near the end of his career. The only other time I remember going to a game just to see one player was near the end of Henry Aaron’s career, went to Shea when the Braves were in town, figured it would be my last chance to see him. The great ones are special. RIP Tom Terrific.

Yeah, wish I had seen Seaver pitch in person. Biggest regret was not going to see him win #300 pitching for the White Sox at Yankee Stadium on Phil Rizzuto day. I played in a Sunday morning softball league back then, so that may interfered with those plans. How many times did he get Cained? RIP Tom Terrific.

Tom Seaver gone is hitting me hard.
Dude was the epitome of class and talent combined. Went to Fresno High and USC, his dad was a great golfer, a Walker Cup guy.
Tom’s no doubt in the top most tier of HOFers, no question. In the modern era since I’ve been alive, he’s my guy for a RH starter, if I need to win one game. Yep, over Maddux, Marichal, Clemens and Ryan. Watch Seaver’s motion, the guy used his legs to power his pitches — the best of any starter I’ve ever seen. In his prime, the fastball was like a freight train, with command better than Ryan.
The LHer he starts against for that one dream game is Koufax…

Agree, he was fun just to watch pitch. Clemens was a youngster when Seaver came to Boston and he has always said he learned so much from Seaver even if he was there only a very short time, especially using the legs to power the pitch.

Seaver/Koufax r/l combo, pretty tough to beat.
