A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

There is a LOT Going on Today

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 5, 2020

Well, this is going to be QUITE the day. Horse racing and Bumgarner. That is quite the exacta. Thankfully not competing for my time.

Funny story. I woke up, hadn’t had coffee yet, was at Draftkings and I clicked on the SF pitcher for tonight’s game. It said Cahill. I was like, “What, Bum’s pitching today I thought.” Lol. Then I remembered I needed to click on the AZ pitcher if I wanted to see Bumgarner’s name……

Anyway, I’m a pretty sentimental person when it comes to almost anything. I will hold the memories that country fuck’s given me FOREVER in my heart.

But we need this game. I hope we light his ass up.

Kind of thing J Robinson not allowed to do. Btw found nice Larry Doby reference in J Shea’s “24” book on Mays–he barnstormed 1955 off season with Mays who took over Robinson’s group after he retired. Hank Aaron was on that team plus Campanella, Mays OF buddy Monte Irvin, Ernie Banks and Don Newcombe.
Team played 28 exhibitions and won them all.

Aaron said, “It was the best team I ever played on.”

mm that was old school move that definitely used to happen back in day. Never saw that one before either.
Still can’t get over how Flaco turned into Loco and ruined Giants big inning. Only thing I can think of is he went back to tag and saw Duggar bluff down the line and put his head down and took off.

Coonrod with back to back meltdowns. um, Sac will be about 110 this weekend.

Watched Opie wipe these guys out the other night, gave up 1 IF hit in 6 innings. Fastball topped out at 92, often very well located down and away on black. different speeds on slider 83 ish curve even slower. It’s a command thing and he knows how to get hitters out–when he tires and hangs breaking balls he gets hurt. I think his ERA is 1.50.

DBax one of worst hitting teams in league coming in. 14th for runs on base and slugging. They’ve hit 32 HRs to Giants 51, team BA .233 to Giants .268. 12 hits last night 4 doubles and Marte HR. Plus they’d just traded away one of their few standouts Starling Marte. Turned 4 DPs last night including Dubon gaffe.

A couple names to the faces in this story on the Randle video, along with another infamous between both teams five days later. Fun fact: Randle was one of the players traded by the Giants when they sent Bill Madlock to the Pirates in ’79.

Yeah, it’s going to be supremely weird to watch the Giants facing Bum. I still think it was the right move to let him walk, but he’ll forever be an all-time SF great.

  7. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 5, 2020 at 9:06 am

What LJ said, it’s going to be weird seeing Bum face old teammates Belt and Craw (assuming both get the start vs. a lefty). If not for the DH, I have little doubt that Bum would hit a bomb off one of our crappy pitchers.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on September 5, 2020 at 9:22 am

He might do just that. His hitting may be better than his pitching at this point.

Great find on that video, Mac. I’m not afraid to say it, but I miss that old-school version of the game, edgy, non-PC, tough. Like so much stuff these days, baseball has become sanitized, to its detriment. The ’70’s was a great decade for the game. So many great players, characters and teams. That decade cemented my lifelong passion for the Giants, even though they sucked most of the time.

And yeah, 10 cent beer night may not have been the best idea ever, especially in Cleveland. LOL

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 5, 2020 at 9:40 am

Bases loaded no outs and Dumbon pulls a Ruben Rivera on the base paths on a short fly to right that only Flavor’s guy Billy Ham might try to score on.You just can’t be that stupid late in the game, it was a game killer mistake..

Yeah as much as we honor Bum’s tremendous accomplishments with the Giants, he hasn’t been the same pitcher ever since his ill advised dirt bike incident. Now he ends up signing with the Dirt-Bags cause he thought they are a winning organization he wanted to lead.Lol they have tanked so bad the GM dumped 4 key players, had to apologize to the fans, who are all pissed as they know this team just got worse then better..

First game back for Bum after along injury layoff and how bad he has pitched all year the Giants should be able to tee off on him early and often, but then again he does have the motivation factor going for him facing his old team. Either way it’s a can’t miss TV 📺 game..

Unbelievably boneheaded play by Dubon. If the guy was some kind of screaming talent, I could live with it, but my impression is that he isn’t. He flails away at the plate and seems prone to regular gaffes. I don’t think he’ll ever be more than a utility player.

  13. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 5, 2020 at 9:47 am

Dubon’s gaffe was the second straight day I saw a player make an unbelievably dumb out on the bases. In Yanks-Mets on Thursday, Yanks’ Tyler Wade was the free runner on second to start the top of the 10th. Leadoff batter hits a line drive to RF Conforto, and Wade immediately broke for third expecting the ball to fall in . . . except it was caught, and he was easily doubled off second. Mets won in the bottom of the 10th.

After I finished screaming at the TV, Mrs. James, who’s very sweet on Dubon, pointed out that Dickerson did fail to bring home the run and Longoria didn’t run on the grounder to 3rd. Once Dickerson popped out, the Giants’ chances of not scoring a run in the inning jumped 20%, from 16 to 36%. Longo is on pace to ground into 30 25 DPs over a full season. Have I helped anyone find a little forgiveness?

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 5, 2020 at 10:43 am

How do you forgive when you can’t forget..

Though with managers and players in a 162 game season have to have the mindset every game to shrug it off.
God the pressures of a manager I could never handle that. You want to scream at a player for screwing up but you need to keep it inside and best to deal with it one on one after the game in his office.

Not surprised Billy Martin was mgr. of Texas while all that went on. Probably did exactly what Randle did during his playing days.
iirc there was incident with Giants where I think Willie Mac told pitcher not to field the bunt that he’d deal with it and any repercussions from pissed off batter looking for revenge.

My mom had old school take on fining guys for mental errors. She used to say it all time watching TV games…”I’d fine him $50.”

I could see Davis taking Ruf spot. As well as Flores and Belt are hitting there isn’t any room for at 1b, and with only 1 HR in 57 ABs he hasn’t done much to help OF or DH.

It will be interesting to see how well Dickerson can do rest of 3 weeks. It’s easy for good couple games to skew the numbers in short sample size. Looking at some fangraphs stuff, he is laying off out of zone pitches and his iso power is way up right now over last year.
Wasn’t that long ago he was hitting .195, so let’s see what he can do especially at home with archways closed.

Xoot , Dubon cop to his mistake and said “I cost us the game” I ran with my head down when it should of been up seeing if Duggar was going are not, I thought he was going but it’s all on me..

Dubon is a major leaguer no doubt in my book, his average is .286 since a recent hot streak, nothing wrong with that. And they threw him into CF this year which is one of the hardest positions to learn and overall with his speed has done a good job out there.
He’s young and will only get better with more experience, hell it’s really only his 1st less then a half season for him, give him time. One thing he could do is at weight and strength to that small frame, he’s listed at 160 lbs 6’0 way to skinny.Maybe hang out with Panda that would work putting on the pounds..

I agree with Chuck and I was pissed off too about Ahmed basically rearranging the whole batters box with his cleats like he was roto tilling ready to plant seeds. Then stepping out after the first pitch to do it all over again, which had Anderson yelling get in the box.

Dubon might get better with experience. He also might not do shit. Baserunning is as fundamental to the game as anything, and it’s not that difficult. Buster Posey is a great baserunner and one of the slowest guys in the league. It’s about knowing situations, keeping your head up and taking the extra base when it’s there for the taking. A guy making it to the major leagues and not knowing that stuff concerns me.

It may seem off the wall to some, bit I could see Buster taking over the manager job from Kapler next season or in ’22. He’s flowing over with baseball smarts, knows how to go the other way with 2 strikes on him, has been managing pitchers for years, has the rings and respect all over baseball, particularly with Giants fans. Player-manager next season? Well, maybe.

I’m sure Bart is uber-talented offensively, but his defense looks very suspect at this point and we were led to believe that it was one of his strong suits. Poor defense behind the plate can kill a team. Posey was a defensive stud from the start, as well as a clutch hitter.

It makes me wonder if that’s one reason Zaidi took another catcher in the first round this year. Can’t remember his name, local kid.

Just scratched because the horse freaked out and took a nasty fall heading back to the stall ( maybe camera’s spooked him) is #10 Thousand Words a vet scratch, right call on a nasty spill..🐎

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 4:02 pm

I read recently that race-horses can live 20-25 years, although their racing careers are only a few years. I had no idea. But then again, I know very little about horses.
I know that horses were unknown to Native Americans until Europeans brought them over post-1492.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 4:05 pm

And then, of course, some tribes became excellent riders of horses. And, of course, there were many millions of buffalo roaming free in North America.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 4:14 pm

Oops, I meant to say domesticated horses were brought post-1492. There were types of wild horses in North America for millions of years that had not been domesticated.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 4:18 pm

        This is a fun fact:
“Horses were first domesticated on the plains of northern Kazakhstan some 5,500 years ago — 1,000 years earlier than thought — by people who rode them and drank their milk.”

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 4:21 pm

I had read that tribes people in Asia would make little cuts in horses to drink their blood to keep from dying of thirst in dire situations.

“If they leave him alone, he’ll be fine.” Said by Baffert to tvg guys after Authentic last workout at Del Mar before he left. Only one out of about dozen of their people picked Authentic.

  46. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 5, 2020 at 4:50 pm

Yeah I’m sure Baffert was pissed off that his other horse Thousand Words was a late scratch due to being spooked on the way back to his stall by cameras maybe clicking.
Authentic really impressed and a big size horse with obvious endurance that Tiz the Law could not close on at the finish..

I looked right out a window when it happened. It looked like twilight to me. We can disagree on it.

I looked out the window over the bay at that time too. It was dark.

If Dubon starts to show some power, he may stick. Zaidi would love a couple of mid-700s OPS utility guys who play plus defense in the IF/OF.

Mets announcers were ripping Bryce Harper for not taking charging of a shallow fly that 2B Neil Walker ended up having to back-pedal to catch, enabling Todd Frazier to tag from third and score. Harper then got tossed between innings for arguing over a ball he laced down the 1B line that he thought was fair but was called foul.

a friend back east sent me a text yesterday to say that Charlie Hayes’s son was playing good 3B for the Pirates. The Pirates? I did faintly remember Ch Hayes Sr’s two stints with the Giants. But the Pirates? What division are they in this year?

      • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:09 pm

If it was English soccer, it’d be the Second Division.

    So that’s Howard K Smith.

Last night’s game had its first pitch at 6:45. Sunset was at 7:30, whatever that means. The length of twilight is literally a gray area. So…..we can check it out tonight. Let’s see what time it’s officially dark. I know the ballpark lights get turned on at some point during twilight, but players still find it challenging to see the ball in that situation.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:14 pm

My latitude is 37.63. San Francisco’s latitude is 37.77. A negligible difference.
I don’t know how to factor in the Coastal mountain range. This won’t be exact science. 🙂

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:15 pm

No. Last night’s game was unusually slow in the early innings. Go back to last night’s blog posts to verify that. And then go to mlb’s highlights for the game to watch video from the top of the third, before Bart’s fuckup, and you’ll see multiple small shadows around the players’ feet and a dark sky. The lights were in control. I have no idea how dark the sky will be tonight at the top of the third. I hope it’ll be twilight. Last night’s game was interminable. And painful.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:19 pm

I’m just curious what time it actually gets dark.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:30 pm

SF “civil twilight” 7:31 – 7:58 pm 8/5/20. The first two innings went very long last night. The top of the third was pretty long too, before the pop-up,

  53. xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:18 pm

Bart did lose that pitch in the twilight, though.

  54. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:30 pm

I still have last night’s game recorded. Between innings tonight I fast-forwarded to the bottom of the third of last night’s game. Before the bottom of the third starts, there is a camera shot of the Bay Bridge, and the sky is clearly not dark yet.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:34 pm

And the sky in the camera shot seems hazy, too. From the fires still?

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:42 pm

my dear sweet god what a stupid argument. look at the mlb replay. look at the scientific daylight stats. If you have a recording of Bart’s fuckup, clip it and post it here so that we can see him lose the ball in the “twilight” while everyone else on the field sees exactly where the ball is, including the pitcher, who saved his ass.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:47 pm

I looked right at the video clip of the sky at start of the bottom of the third. A hazy, but not dark sky. Anyone who has the game recorded can see it.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:51 pm

my dear sweet god. Bart didn’t see the ball; everyone else did. The sky was dark and the lights had taken control. It was not “twilight.” Bart’s got problems with his D. No excuses.

  69. xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:53 pm

MadBum had no trouble with Bart up and in. Bart doesn’t have a hole in his swing, he lacks half a zone.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 5, 2020 at 7:00 pm

Yeah Bart loves to extend his arms, teams are pounding him inside, he has to make adjustments for the inside stuff, maybe even back off the plate a bit and he can turn on that inside pitch better..

  70. Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on September 5, 2020 at 6:54 pm

Bart saw nothing but 4-seam fastballs from MadBum—all well up in the zone. Bumgarner’s scooter accident took off his edge. The juiced ball is the reason he is no longer a Giant. Look up the stats and compare his seasons pre and post the lower-seamed ball. When he really got hurt was when there were runners on base. Didn’t happen so far tonight, just a couple old pros taking advantage of their experiences.

That’s my guess. I think they said earlier that was the reason (discomfort) for a short start last outing, too.
