A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Lossless Against Seattle

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 17, 2020

There we go, that felt good. Feasting on Seattle. Why can’t all our opponents be Seattle? I’m interested in your take on this quote:

I’m not saying Kap and his band of “approachateers” haven’t given these guys something new to think about at the plate. But for Crawford to discount the *closed* stadium seems a little off to me. Hey, he’s the one on the field, he would know. But it’s probably a lot better for your ego to say something like this, especially when you are in the twilight of your career, than admitting the park is playing much easier for hitters this year. Intrinsic vs extrinsic debate. I’ll go so far as to say it’s a little bit of both.

The Giants were ripping the ball all over the yard last night. That was nice to see. The G’s usually have trouble with the Mariners, but not this year. They can’t beat the damn Padres, but the M’s are fodder.

    Finish ’em off today!

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 17, 2020 at 9:22 am

Yep.This year’s Giants are like 5-17 or something like that against teams with a .500 or better record.

I’ve been out in those archways a couple times, and during the day at least I didn’t feel a windstorm blowing through those. Not like anything that would greatly affect batted balls anyway.

  3. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on September 17, 2020 at 8:01 am

Approach or not, the change in how the park is playing is remarkable. Same cast of characters, basically, but the ball is flying out of the yard.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 17, 2020 at 8:02 am

Exactly. Getting the ball up in the air now, it’s going out. Before, it died. That’s not a different hitting approach.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 17, 2020 at 8:06 am

Yes. Especially for night games. Sure moving fences in helps a little but still, putting a ball into new bullpen like Crawford did last night is good whack. Didn’t see too many of those last season, from him or few others.

I enjoy college football a lot, but Big 10 caving seems like puro money grab. I saw where there was some threshold where if 5% of players testing positive (say 4-5 out of whole team) is supposed to shut program down for a week. Well as NYT story reported, recent tests done at Penn St showed 50 positive tests among 860 for entire athletic dept. Doesn’t include coaches or support staff. Just don’t see how this is safe.

Plus no way to test for more than couple players over potential heart issues, as the equipment is not readily available. Nearest one to Penn St is 2 hours away.

  5. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 17, 2020 at 8:27 am

Reflecting on the M’s 17 Ks: Giants had more hits (15) than the number of times Mariners put the ball in play (14).

  6. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 17, 2020 at 8:28 am

Agree (disagree with Craw). No way I can see it being anything but a combo of the park, and the new approach by the hitters.

  7. sandog's avatar sandog said, on September 17, 2020 at 8:33 am

I think Craw did give a little credit to the fences and the archway deal. Maybe not as much as he should have, but he mentioned it. I think Flav’s take is a fair one.
Flemm was saying the other night that research shows the ball is not as live as last year, but that is hard for me to buy. The Pads RH hitters are launching balls into the upper deck at Petco at a rate I’ve never seen before. They’ve got some studs, I know, but I still think the ball is juiced.

My memory (which could be wrong) is that The Avengers was on PBS, as one of the first fictional shows for adults on PBS. PBS had been just about all educational shows before that. With the popularity of The Avengers, bringing British shows to the U.S. became a niche for PBS. Monty Python became a big success for PBS, and now all types of British shows are on PBS, of course.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 17, 2020 at 11:14 am

The Avengers incorporated the spirit of the 1960s in a way that U.S. shows weren’t. The U.S. shows tended just to occasionally mock the ’60s. Hippies were treated as comic relief in shows. “The Monkees” at least had counter-culture spirit to it. In the opening theme song, it has the line “We’re the young generation, and we’ve got something to say.”
The show “That Girl” had some of that spirit, although her boyfriend was a total dud. Just like the Darrens in “Bewitched.” Total kill-joy duds.

There was Laugh-In though. And the Mod Squad . . .

And England in the 60s was more about fashion, style and music. In the US it was more about anti-war sentiment, the draft, and revolution. Things mainstream TV was ignoring.

Watching the current Giants’ catchers really hammers home how much we miss Posey and how good he is defensively. I’ve never seen a cadre of catchers have so damn much trouble getting on the same page with their pitchers. They’re constantly visiting the mount and the pitchers are constantly stepping off.

So far, Bart’s defense does not impress me, at all, and we were led to believe it was a strength of his. Maybe it’s first season jitters, but I’m not so sure. Huge dropoff when Posey isn’t back there.

Wildness of pen guys when they come in, yikes.

No shit. Every one of these guys is nibble, nibble, nibble, but Selman got out of it. Good comeback win, nonetheless.

Well Kat, I guess we have “Sudden Sam” Selman & “Son of Sam” Coonrod…

  71. Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on September 17, 2020 at 4:54 pm

Can we say Selman was wildly effective–keeping the whole Flap on tenterhooks(whatever they are) and making a couple dozen pitches to get the job done. Even down 4-1 I had confidence this bunch of hitters would rally again…and again. But the mental mistakes and the stranded runners. Yet a win is a win and the Giants are prepped for some tougher competition. Let’s hope they can play a clean, errorless and boobooless game of baseball. More than one, actually. Seems Moronta is the projection for closer. But could he handle that job coming off the IL? Maybe Kapler will ease him in a bit in a lower stress situation.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on September 17, 2020 at 5:00 pm

If Moronta is right, he would seem the obvious choice out of the guys they have now, but he’s been erratic in the past too. He just has more experience, which is a good thing for a closer. I’d welcome him in that role.

Agree, LJ. He threw an inning in a simulated game in Sac yesterday, no issues. Hope to see him soon is his stuff is right.

Another comeback win. This team is fun because last year 4-1 down after 2 and the game was OVER. I haven’t looked or done any research but i would swear we have come back from 3 runs down more in 50 games than the last 2 years combined!
Love the Emma Peel / Avengers montage. My mom and dad loved that show. Gives me a great memory of them sitting in our living room watching. Thanks

Yeah, this potent offense has been a nice surprise. I would never have guessed headed into this season, but these dudes can hit. The Mariners will be glad to see them go, because the number of hard hit balls against them has been off the charts. Shots sprayed all over the field.

We are in 7th for now, 1/2 game up on the Phils. Is it wrong of me to hope we get 8th?? Pads scare me more than the Dodgers

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 17, 2020 at 6:28 pm

Agree. We are 4-6 against the bums. 1-5 against Dago (with four left to play).

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 17, 2020 at 6:32 pm

I think the Giants would play the Cubs in a 2-7 matchup.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 17, 2020 at 6:38 pm

Yep. If it all ended right now we’d play the Cubbies…

Marlins lost today. Cards lost. Philly is beating the Mets, and Rox are up on the bums.

The Avengers was a very cool show. I’ve always loved British TV programming and movies as well. There’s been tons of very good series produced by the Brits over the years. Production values are usually off the hook and the acting and writing is always top notch. The English culture just lends that certain something that American productions sometimes lack.

TCM will go through stretches when they show multiple British movies, but I wish they’d do it more often.

The recent Sherlock series starring Benedict Cumberbatch is great. So well done. Each season is 3 hour-and-a-half episodes.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 17, 2020 at 8:17 pm

        I’ve been watching Sherlock.
BC is amazingly good in this role.
Plus, each episode is essentially a 90 minute movie. Upper end production values, cinematography, great actors, and the writing is just top notch, which makes the show. TV should all be this good…
